( robin )bart.... is reporting an increase in arrests made by police in 20-17. their numbers indicate a 43-percent increase in arrests over 20-16....and there is an impressive 88-percent increase in catching fare evaders. bart police... chief carlos

rojas... says his officers have issued about 14-percent more prohibition orders... blocking violent riders and using new measures to tackle auto thefts and bike thefts. in 20-17... bart reported an 18-percent drop in those bike thefts. although bart officials are proud of the transit's accomplishments... they say there is still room for improvement. ( robin ) bart's police chief says his officers are getting extra training. he says - the transit system has over 400- thousand riders a day... and credits the strong camera system in catching many thiefs. he added... bart police are actively looking for new ways to make the system as safe as possible. ( robin ) california attorney general xavier becerra.... is suing the trump administration for adding a citizenship question to the 20-20 census. this

is the latest exchange in a feud between sacramento and washington over federal immigration policies. with california arguing... that adding a citizenship question could discourage non-citizens from participating. the attorney general says... this is just the latest move by the trump administration to target undocumented immigrants. he says he wants everyone accounted for. the white house says... this decision will help to enforce the voting rights act. ( robin ) the the attorney general

argues ... that information collected without including non- citizens could be used to reduce the number of representatives california sends to congress. he also says, the move could affect federal funding for things like education, highways, and homeland security. ( robin )there is also worry that adding a citizenship question would get an inaccurate number of how many people live in the bay area... and increase a climate of fear with the community. kron 4's charles clifford reports on this from santa clara. well, we are still a couple of years away from the next census but there is already concern that adding a citizenship question could negatively impact the whole process.sotthis is clearly a disengenious move by the adminstration to politicize

the census.sameena usamn is the government relations coordinator at cair, the council on american islamic relations. they provide free legal service to anyone experiencing discrimination, hate crimes or bullying. she says that the addition of a citizenship status question would discourage people fromto the census has alreay alarmed some of the people cair works with.sotwe have been hearing a lot of community concern about this change in the census.she worries that if a citizenship question is added, it would discourage people off from participating in the process, thus undermining the legitimacy of the census. sot the census should be including everyone. people who have homes, people who are homeless, people who are documented and undocumented. we need to make sure there's an accurate count of people who are living in this country, not just citizens.she also says that the immigrant community in the bay area is already on edge as result of the trump adminstration efforts to implement travel bans and oppose santctuary cities. adding a citizenship questions would be another blow.sotthis is clearly a disengenious move by the adminstration to politicize the census.sot there's already a climate of fear in the community. people being targeted because of their citizen ship status. whether or not they are documented. so people may be discourgaed from taking part in the census. sameena says cair will work to oppose the addition of a citizenship question. they also support lawsuits being brought by california and other states to stop the question from appearing on the next census. census.

( robin ) immigration agents gained access to another bay area jail... and interviewed four inmates. this time at the santa clara county sheriff's jail. the sheriff's office confirms, ice did get into the jail back on march 7th and march 8th... and interviewed four inmates... but none were detained. immigration tried to get back in on march 14th, but were denied. in a statement... sheriff laurie smith says... ice was ámistakenly let in. this is the second time ice has gotten into bay area jails. around the same time as the santa clara incident... two ice agents made their way into san francisco county jail. ( robin ) in mendocino county... two women and three children were killed when an s-u-v drove off a cliff on monday. authorities say the driver was driving southbound on highway one... when they pulled into a dirt

turnout. instead of stopping.... the s-u-v drove off the cliff... and landed about 100-feet below onto a large rock. the vechile landed on its roof.... killing all five passengers. firefighters had to rappel down the cliff to retrieve the bodies with the help of a helicopter. police are investigating the cause of the accident. drugs and alcohol were not considered factors. ( robin )it's been a rough week for students at oakland technical high school. this after a beloved member of the varsity football team passed away late last week. kron four's philippe djegal spoke with the young man's friends and head coach... who say they lost a great guy. (philippe) jeremiah joyner was passionate about football, say his friends and family. christian spencer says jeremiah put everything he had into everything he did. christian spencer/friend- "he was a good teammate -- never put anybody down. he, i, i, i feel like he helped me better myself as a football player." spencer says joyner was a former teammate on the junior

varisty squad at oakland technical high school. but last season, jeremiah played varisty. and, his head coach was virdell larkins. virdell larkins/head coach- "just getting the news of this, saying, you know, just unexpectedly, its kind of hard." coach larkins, is like everyone else... in disbelief over jeremiah's passing. right now, it's unclear what caused his death. his mother will only confirm that he died at a hospital in oakland late last week.virdell larkins/head coach- "he was a very responsible -- very engaged kid." those who knew jeremiah say he worked hard at everything he did. that he certainly loved football... but that he was more than just an athlete. he worked hard in the classroom as well. livier perez/teacher- "i definitely think he had a bright future. he detinitely was interested in college." livier (live-vey) perez was jeremiah's world literature teacher last year.livier perez/teacher- "he was, um, extremely independent, tried really hard creative." and, he loved to play a game of "uno" with his friends at

like i seen a couple myself"> sfpd police officials say sunday's sideshow activity on treasure island remains under investigation...haaziq madyun kron4news ( robin )a man is in jail after leading police on a pursuit that started on the bay bridge. the chase ended on wendy drive in pleasant hill... where police pulled the man out of the van he was driving. this is video of the arrest. police say the chase started when the man almost hit a c- h-p patrol car while driving through a construction zone. the chase lasted about 15-minutes. police are now trying to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role. class... thinking there had been a threat to their school. for the second time in less than a month.... a threat causes a bay area school to evacuate before the day is over. kron 4's dan kerman has the story. hese are the panicked voices of cupertino high school students evacuating campus after the school received a phone call threatening the schoolsot deep sethi/cupertino high student 10-17there was an announcement to evacuate campus. it was really scary because everybody just ran it wasn't like a code red, you could tell this wasn't a drill sot sot sahithi goginehi/cuper tino high junior 18-25there were teachers saying get off campus and we were over there near that intersection and all the teachers are like call your mom, call your parents and go home.it was about 1pm when the school received the threatening call from what sounded like a robotic voice sot tanaz harooni/cupertino high junior 32-42it's scary to think about going to school to just study and we hear threats coming to our school, it's just really scary situation and i really hope it doesn't happen to any other school deputies blanketed the area.

sot sgt. rich glennon/santa clara county sheriff's office 49-58deputies responded taking full precautions, blocking off all the roadways to the school and did a systematic search of the school . there was a threat of active violence and we determined that not to be a credible threat.but authorities say the phone number that originated the call has been used before to make other threatening calls. based on the number that placed the call, you can even look at google and see that number has placed calls to many schools across the country standup dan kerman/cupertino 115-125this is the second time in less than 30 days this campus has had to evacuate early . on february 28th a students receive a series of texts threatening the campus. it was at the end of the day, still school had to be evacuated early. in cupertino, dan kerman kron 4 news. have you ever had your dog attacked (so are you going to help) am i going to help with the problems we have with other dogs) what other problems, i'm trying to find out the coyote eats the dogs the coyote eats the cats) .so apparently in my quest to find the off lead dog problem i was diverted to the problem with coyotes eating cats and dogs which caused me to posed a simple question wouldn't be easier to put your dog on a leash if they're eating them yea but they eat, it at night when they escape oh ok sometimes dogs escape from the house and while we were talking a new visitor arrived and he was staring at us and watching our every move it turns out he escaped from a home nearby as my friend with the umbrella leaves she placed her dog on a leash i soon found out where the escapee was housed well usually my dogs are inside all the time ( except for this one) i don't know how she got out... so then i went searching for more

( darya ) ( darya ) a big story this morning... protesters take over a sacramento city council meeting... demanding justice for stephon clark....the unarmed black man who was shot and killed by police. they were led by clark's brother -- stevante -- who sat down right in front of the mayor . ( darya ) speaker after speaker took to the podium... and many more protesters gathered outside the council chamber. ( james ) hours before the meeting... sacramento's police chief announced state attorney general xavier becerra will conduct an independent investigation into clark's death. but relatives say they're skeptical of the promised investigation. clark was shot by police in his grandmother's backyard on

march 18th. officers say they thought he had a gun. he was holding a cell phone. ( james ) nearly 700 people were hoping to speak at the podium. but the meeting was shut down just a few hours after it started... as the protest outside became chaotic. one person was arrested for assaulting a police officer. ( darya ) for the second time in six days... protesters forced a lockdown at sacramento's golden1 center. the arena is just a few blocks away from city hall. some fans who arrived early were let in. but just a few thousand were able to watch the kings take on the mavericks. the contract is a priority. from march 26 to march 29, oea members will honor the terms of their expired contract by not doing any work outside of their paid duty day and will have other actions at school sites. oea members will not take work home. teachers will not write lesson plans or grade student work outside of our contractual hours. they will not attend unpaid meetings before or after school. ( james ) in the north bay... a high school treasurer has been sentenced to six months in jail for embezzlement. mary david was a treasurer at rancho cotate high school in rohnert park from 20-13 to 20-17. she forged signatures and wrote checks to herself up to 1-thousand dollars multiple times. she admitted to embezzling around 50-thousand from the school. david was sentenced on monday to 6 months in jail and four years of probation. ( darya ) students at oakland tech are mourning the loss of one of their classmates.( james ) a beloved member of the varisty football team died last last week. kron four's philippe djegal spoke with the young man's friends and head coach. jeremiah joyner was passionate about football, say his friends and family. christian spencer says jeremiah put everything he had into everything he did. christian spencer/friend- "he was a good teammate -- never put y wn. he, i, i, i myself as a football player." spencer says joyner was a former teammate on the junior varisty squad at oakland technical high school. but last season, jeremiah played varisty. and, his head coach was virdell larkins. virdell larkins/head coach- "just getting the news of this, saying, you know, just unexpectedly, its kind of hard." coach larkins, is like everyone else... in disbelief over jeremiah's passing. right now, it's unclear what caused his death.

his mother will only confirm that he died at a hospital in oakland late last week.virdell larkins/head coach- "he was a very responsible -- very engaged kid." those who knew jeremiah say he worked hard at everything he did. that he certainly loved football... but that he was more than just an athlete. he worked hard in the classroom as well. livier perez/teacher- "i definitely think he had a bright future. he detinitely was interested in college." livier (live-vey) perez was jeremiah's world literature teacher last year.livier perez/teacher- "he was, um, extremely independent, tried really hard creative." and, he loved to play a game of "uno" with his friends at lunchtime. a tradition they say will live on while they're all still in high school. because that's how they say their friend jeremiah would have wanted it. in oakland, philippe djegal, kron four news. ( james ) the n-t-s-b is investigating a deadly crash and fire... involving a tesla in mountain view. two investigators are now in the bay area. the agency says it's not clear whether the telsa model-x was operating on autopilot when it crashed on highway 101 on friday.

investigators will also look into the fire that broke out after the crash. the driver -- wei huang of san mateo -- was killed. police say huang was traveling south in the carpool lane when the tesla hit a freeway barrier -- and caught on fire. ( james ) uber will not renew its permit to test driverless cars in californa. those permits are set to expire saturday. if the company wants a new permit...the d-m-v says it has to address the investigation in to a fatal crash in arizona last week. this is video from inside an autonomous uber s-u-v. a pedestrian in tempe was killed. uber suspended its tests on public roads after that accident. ( darya ) online ads for unlicensed pot shops are causing tension in california's pot market. state regulators have warned the website 'weedmaps' to take down ads from illegal sellers. but the company says its not breaking any laws.

( james ) ( james ) another big story this morning... protesters take over a sacramento city council meeting... demanding justice for stephon clark....the unarmed black man who was shot and killed by police. they were led by clark's brother -- stevante -- who sat down right in front of the mayor . ( james ) speaker after speaker took to the podium... and many more protesters gathered outside the council chamber. hours before the meeting... sacramento's police

chief announced state attorney general xavier becerra will conduct an independent investigation into clark's death. but relatives say they're skeptical of the promised investigation. clark was shot by police in his grandmother's backyard on march 18th. officers say they thought he had a gun. he was holding a cell phone. nearly 700 people were hoping to speak at the podium. but the meeting was shut down just a few hours after it started... as the protest outside became chaotic. one person was arrested for assaulting a police officer. ( james ) we have continuing coverage of the stephon clark shooting on air and online. on our website we have more video of protests around sacramento... the 9-1-1 call that led police to stephon clark and the lawsuit being filed against the city of sacramento. it is all at kron 4 dot ( darya ) we are learning more about a sideshow that happened on the bay bridge. police now believe the participants warmed up on nearby treasure island. the san francisco police and c-h-p are handling the

investigation of sunday's sideshow. they now believe it started on treasure island... then moved to the bay bridge. a witness told us that sidshows happen all the time on treasure island. ( darya ) workers are installing chain link fencing on the island to enclose the once wide open space where they practiced. ( darya ) two women and three children were killed when their s-u-v went off a cliff in mendocino county. authorities say the driver was driving southbound on highway one when they pulled into a dirt turnout. but instead of stopping....the s-u-v drove off the cliff and landed about 100 feet below onto a large rock. the s-u-v landed on its roof.... killing all five passengers. firefighters had to rappel down the cliff

to get the bodies. police are investigating the cause of the accident. drugs and alcohol are not considered factors. ( james ) a man armed with a hammer robbed a woman in san francisco's visitacion valley. police say the man walked into her home around 8-30 monday morning. he then pushed her into a bathroom before taking cash... a smartphone... jewelry and a safe. thankfully... the woman was not hurt. ( james ) bart police are making more arrests. bart is reporting an 43 percent increase in arrests. their numbers also show an impressive 88 percent increase in catching fare evaders. bart police chief carlos rojas says his officers have issued about 14 percent more prohibition orders -- blocking violent riders. he also says new measures stop auto thefts and bike thefts as made a difference. in 2017... bart reported an 18 percent drop in bike thefts. although bart officials are proud of what they've done... they say there is still room for improvement. a 10 minute search ... the plane found the car and saw the driver walking into a store. solano police then found the car and arrested the driver. ( james ) also new this morning... video released overnight shows a c-h-p helicopter rescuing an injured hiker. a 72-year-old man was hiking the mount saint helena trail when he slipped and injured his leg. chp says a helicopter rescue was required because it was difficult to find the man's exact location. the man was treated for injuries and is expected to recover. ( james ) we are learning immigration agents were able to gain access to another bay area jail... and interviewed four inmates. it happened at the santa clara county sheriff's office jail. ice got into the jail back on march 7th and 8th. they interviewed four inmates... but none were detained. agents tried to get back in a week later... but were denied. in a statement sheriff laurie smith says ice was "mistakenly" let in. this

( james ) state attorney general xavier becerra is suing the trump administration for adding a citizenship question to the 2020 census. this morning... we're hearing from both sides. we first brought you this story yesterday morning as breaking news. becerra says adding a citizenship question could discourage non-citizens from taking part in the census. he also calls the move the administration's latest way to target undocumented immigrants. the white house says this decision will help enforce the voting rights act. ( james )

the the attorney general argues that information collected áwithout including non- citizens could be used to reduce the number of representatives california sends to congress. he also says the move could affect federal funding for things like education... highways and homeland security. ( darya ) the council on american islamic relations worries that adding a citizenship question would get an inaccurate number of how many people live in the bay area. kron 4's charles clifford has their reaction from santa clara. sameena usamn is the government relations

coordinator at cair, the council on american islamic relations. they provide free legal service to anyone experiencing discrimination, hate crimes or bullying. she says that the addition of a citizenship status question would discourage people fromto the census has alreay alarmed some of the people cair works with.sotwe have been hearing a lot of community concern about this change in the census.she worries that if a citizenship question is added, it would discourage people off from participating in the process, thus undermining the legitimacy of the census. sot the census should be including everyone. people who have homes, people who are homeless, people who are documented and undocumented. we need to make sure there's an accurate count of people who are living in this country, not just citizens.she also says that the immigrant community in the bay area is already on edge as result of the trump adminstration

efforts to implement travel bans and oppose santctuary cities. adding a citizenship questions would be another blow.sotthis is clearly a disengenious move by the adminstration to politicize the census.sot there's already a climate of fear in the community. people being targeted because of their citizen ship status. whether or not they are documented. so people may be discourgaed from taking part in the census. sameena says cair will work to oppose the addition of a citizenship question. they also support lawsuits being brought by california and other states to stop the question from appearing on the next census. charles clifford kron 4 news ( darya ) convicted cop killer... luis bracamontes... has been sentenced to death. he smiled and clapped as the verdict was read yesterday. bracamontes was convicted in february of killing two police officers... in a crime spree

that spread across multiple california counties. he yelled at jurors and victim's families throughout the trial... and at one point threatened to kill more officers. it's not clear when or if the sentence will be carried out. california has not executed an inmate since 2006. ( james ) in the north bay... a high school treasurer has been sentenced to six months in jail for embezzlement. mary david was a treasurer at rancho cotate high school in rohnert park from 20-13 to 20-17. she forged signatures and wrote checks to herself up to 1-thousand dollars multiple times. she admitted to embezzling around 50-thousand from the school. david was sentenced on monday to 6 months in jail and four years of probation. ( james ) kron4's terisa estacio breaks down what these numbers mean. (estacio reporting) pointing to new figures showing a drop in crime in several key areas on the bay area rapid transit system, bart's chief of police went over where they are seeing the most improvement. chief carlos rojas, bart police chief. "we have seen

increasing in arrests, by 43 percent, 88 percent increase in getting fare evaders. chief rojas addressed how as an agency focusing on fare evasion has helped significantly. he also added that following up issuing about 14 percent more prohibition orders - blocking violent riders and using new measures to tackle auto thefts and bike thefts as made a difference. in 2017, bart reported an 18 percent drop in bike thefts. terisa estacio, reporting although chief proud of acommplishments, he says there is room for improvement for example... chief rojas, when you look at most of the crime, it is snatch and grab. electronic devices. education is important. joesph morales, bart rider. i feel like there is no issue, i feel safe. for some riders - they told me they feel comfortable riding the system through the various counties. however, that was not the case for several other riders who spoke to me.... peiling lin, bart rider. at the civic center, i alwasyholly nishimura, bart rider. i night i am worried.

( darya ) in other bay area news ... we are learning more about a sideshow that happened on the bay bridge. police now believe the participants warmed up on nearby treasure island.

the san francisco police and c-h-p are handling the investigation of sunday's sideshow. they now believe it started on treasure island... then moved to the bay bridge. a witness told us that sidshows happen all the time on treasure island. ( darya ) workers are installing chain link fencing on the island to enclose the once wide open space where they practiced. ( darya ) two women and three children were killed when their s-u-v went off a cliff in mendocino county. authorities say the driver was driving southbound on highway one when they pulled into a dirt turnout. but instead of stopping....the s-u-v drove off the cliff and landed about 100 feet below onto a large rock. the s-u-v landed on its roof.... killing all five

passengers. firefighters had to rappel down the cliff to get the bodies. police are investigating the cause of the accident. drugs and alcohol are not considered factors. ( james ) a man armed with a hammer robbed a woman in san francisco's visitacion valley. police say the man walked into her home around 8-30 monday morning. he then pushed her into a bathroom before taking cash... a smartphone... jewelry and a safe. thankfully... the woman was not hurt. ( darya ) thieves steal 20- thousand dollars in computer equipment from a boys and girl's club. this happened at the boys and girls club in el sobrante. officials say an on- site storage unit was burglarized last week. thieves got away with computers, monitors, keyboards, and more. now the organization says it is unclear what impact this could have on programs this year. < as you point this to our council. does this look like a

gun. make them accountable. ahhhhhhh. calm down its alright. >( darya ) a big story this morning... protesters take over a sacramento city council meeting... demanding justice for stephon clark....the unarmed black man who was shot and killed by police. they were led by clark's they were led by clark's brother -- stevante -- who sat down right in front of the mayor . ( darya ) speaker after speaker took to the podium... and many more protesters gathered outside the council chamber. ( james ) hours before the meeting... sacramento's police chief announced state attorney general xavier becerra will conduct an independent investigation into clark's death. but relatives say they're skeptical of the promised investigation. clark was shot by police in his grandmother's backyard on

march 18th. officers say they thought he had a gun. he was holding a cell phone. ( james ) nearly 700 people were hoping to speak at the podium. but the meeting was shut down just a few hours after it started... as the protest outside became chaotic. one person was arrested for assaulting a police officer. ( darya ) the passengers in the truck only suffered minor injuries. doctors say the two-year-old boy is in good conidition. ( darya )millenials are paying

more in rent than any earlier generation. even when you take into account the fact they earn higher salaraies. according to us census bureau data... millenials fork over 45-percent of their income from ages 22-30 for rent. that's higher than the 30 percent reccomended. gen-x spent 41-percent of their income over the same time frame... also up from baby boomers who spent 36-percent. it's only going to get worse for people under the age of 22. generation "z" is projected to spend over 10-percent more than millenials on rent... before the age of 30. percent of people filing taxes will get money back this year. 22 percent will go towards travel and entertainment. 18 percent towards things like groceries and clothing. and 13 percent on home improvements. but the majority of the money will go towards savings and paying off debt.
