afternoon after a threatening call was received. good evening i'm grant lodes. (vicki) and i'm vicki liviakis. the lockdown has now been lifted. it happened just before 1:00 this afternoon at palo alto highschool-- on embaradero road. that's right next to stanford. kron 4's justine waldman has been at the school all afternoon-- justine, what can you tell us about the threat? officers have determined that the threat to palo alto high school this afternoon was likely a hoax. students shared with me pictures like these showing how they used desks to barricade themselves inside classrooms.another said teachers handed out text books to kids to use as shields. today someone phoned in a threat to the palo alto police department directed at palo alto high school. that brought out a substantial police presence from pa police, melno park and the stanford sheriff office.and students tell sot jamie mcgregor / sophomore"the said it was a code red and we have to barricade the doors and everyone has to get inside

(vicki) happening tonight-- the san francisco police department is holding a town hall meeting on a deadly police shooting. the shootout happened last week on geneva avenue and london street. police were responding to reports of an armed man... and when they confronted several people inside a business... and shots were fired. 21-year-old jehad eid was killed... five others were hurt including an officer and a minor. the town hall starts at 6:00 at balboa high school. (grant) the driver arrested yesterday in san francisco - accused of running over five men-- has been identified. 33-year-old mark dennis is facing multiple charges -- including murder. kron four's philippe djegal reports from san francisco -- where he talked to a woman who says...she knows this guy.

(philippe) ann-marie says she's had at least four interactions with 33-year-old mark dennis dating back to last fall. she says this is him -- being arrested in san francisco wednesday... shortly after he is accused of running over five men with his van in the city's dog patch neighborhood, killing one of them.ann-marie/knows suspect- "he would come up to the fence and he'd be threatening and trying to start a fight." ann-marie says mark dennis has told her he is homeless. she'd see him when he'd park his van at heron's head park, where she walks her dogs. and, took this photo of him in january after she says she witnessed an incident involving the suspect.ann- marie/knows suspect- "this one woman told him to please go away and he spit in her eye, so then we say we're going to call the cop and he drives away." she says she's called the police on him several times in the past, but never filed a report. now he is facing charges of murder and attempted murder. ann-marie/knows suspect- "he would do everything he could to basically cause you to interact with him in a really negative way. (ann-marie) i don't know -- i think he's very unhappy." the san francisco medical examiner's office says 34- year-old eliseo lopez was the man killed in the collision. two victims remain hospitalized... one in critical condition, the other serious. the other two victims were released from the hospital. mark dennis is due in court next week. in san francisco, philippe djegal, kron four news. (vicki) happening now... a mysterious tragedy still playing out... tonight, investigators are searching for three children...presumed dead... in mendocino county. their parents and three siblings plummeted to their deaths when the family s-u-v went off highway one and over a cliff. as trevor ault reports... investigators say... it doesn't look good. we have every indication to believe that all 6 children were in there, however only 3 bodies have been recovereddays after launching their investigation-- mendocino county authorities still don't know what exactly happened to the hart family.i can tell you it was a very confusing

scene-because there was no skidmarks, there were no brake marksall that áwasá there was a flipped suv on jagged rocks-- and the bodies of five family members.38-year-old jennifer hart had been driving, her wife sarah in the passenger seat-- and three of their 6 children-- 19-year-old markis and 14-year-olds jeremiah and abigail-- ejected from the vehicle.the remaining 3 children are missing-- 12- year-old sierra, 16-year-old hannah, and 14-year-old devonte-- who you may recognize from this iconic protest photo from 2014.a woman who lives a few hundred yards from the crash told me she didn't know how a person could drive off this cliff on accident-- it's at least 75 feet from the road-- but sheriff allman says it doesn't mean the crash happened on purpose.we have no reason to believe, we have no evidence and no reason to believe that this was an intentional act. they do have reason to believe this crash happened hours before it was reported to the authorities-- but they don't know where the hart family came from, or when they crossed over the edge.i can fairly say that several of the questions that have been asked today will never be answered. it was unwitnessed, we don't know what happened.

(vicki) that was trevor ault reporting. the mendocino county sheriff's office and chp are hoping somebody saw this family over the weekend or monday morning and will come forward. they say any new information could help them piece together these many unanswered questions. (grant) happening now in pacifica. a woman is recovering...after driving her car off a cliff...and landing upside down on the beach below. it happened around six yesterday evening in the area of palmetto avenue and west-line drive...near the mussle rock open space preserve. once at the scene...crews found a vehicle had landed on its roof...they scaled down the cliff to extract the driver and another sole occupant...who was found in critical condition. she was taken to the hospital by helicopter...her condition tonight is unknown. there is a warning for parents before you head to the beach. it's after a man was spotted taking photos of children..... that man is still on the loose.kron4's terisa estacio has details on the person police are now looking for... (terisa estacio, reporting, pacifica) pacifica police say they received a report of a man exposing himself and alledgely taking pictures of video here - at linda mar beach. it was around 2:40 wednesday afternoon - when police arrived, the man had left. but witnesses were able to give a description of the person as well as what vehicle he was driving. this is captain chris clements with the pacifica police dept. capt. chris clements, pacifica p.d. he was described as a white male, adult between 40- 50 with a bearded wearing a black hat, a turquois shirt and short short white shorts. he was seen driving from the beach parking lot southbound on state route 1 in a gray, late model honda civic two door or similar vehicle. authorities are sounding the alarm to make sure parents and others visiting the area are aware of the report... especially since this is a busy time in the area with

many people coming to visit during spring break. in pacifica, terisa estacio (vicki) also happening now... police are looking for a man who sexually assaulted a teen on a jogging path in palo alto. it happened in near arastradero road and deer creek road yesterday afternoon. that's right near the tesla headquarters. police say the man pulled the girl off the jogging path... he then put a gun to her head... and sexually assaulted her. then he ran away and the victim was able to flag down some help. police have not

(grant) another big story tonight...there are concerns over a what some are calling a shortage of police officers in martinez.... kron4's haaziq madyun breaks down the numbers. no dedicated school resource officer, no dedicated for homeless outreach officer, no dedicated officer to work with the mental health evaluation team. that is the current situation at the martinez police department...which is currently experiencing a staffing crisis, according to the martinez police officers association. the police union and the city are trying to find common ground to solve the problem of servere recruitment and retention according to transparent california starting annual salary for a martinez police officer is $75, 846officers in neighboring walnut creek starting annual salary is $93,852... a 21% increase in payunion officials say that is big reason why they are 6

fire investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a blaze at a hotel in the east bay. kron 4's lydia pantazes reports from hayward. the fire started at about 4 this morning on the 2nd floor of this hotel. it's called the america's best value inn on whipple avenue. 32-people were evacuated but no one was hurt. nothing suspicious at this point but they are investigating. even though the fire was contained to one room, several nearby rooms suffered major smoke damage. we spoke with a woman who was staying in a room next to the fire.

(grant) (grant) take a look at this-- c-h-p officers caught a carpool cheater in san jose. this happened on interstate 6-80 yesterday. you can see the mannequin with a backwards baseball cap in the front seat. the officer was on carpool patrol when this driver was caught-- and this driver was caught-- and they tweeted out this picture. the tweet said, "hope he's not expecting his passenger to pay half the ticket". (grant) and more c-h-p officers finding people behaving badly on the roads.

kron 4 is always tracking local stories. and here's a look at what's happening in your neighborhood(grant) our top story at 5:30-- former raider and 49er aldon smith was a no show in court today. smith was supposed be arraigned on charges that he violated a court order when he contacted the victim in a recent domestic violence incident. smith is accused of assaulting his fiance at her home in san francisco's nob hill neighborhood earlier this month. he has pleaded not guilty to the original charges. a judge has issued a 50-thousand dollar warrant for smith's arrest after he didn't appear in court-- but that will only go into effect if he misses his court date next week. .. successfully fixed a high- pressure gas line...ruptured by a construction crews backhoe. the incident happened at the intersection of miller avenue and tucker drive in san jose. one home was evacuated...and 10 others were told to shelter in place due to the cracked gas line. by around noon pg&e crews stopped the flow of gas through the line. the whole area of the intersection was closed off since the pipe burst almost exactly in the middle of it...but has since been reopened. (vicki) police are looking for the gunman in a san jose shooting. it happened yesterday on the 22-hundred block of lanai avenue. when officer arrived on scene-- they found a man who had been shot. the victim suffered life- threatening injuries. so far there's been no suspect or motive linked to the shooting. (grant) in the north bay-- a man killed while driving at the sonoma raceway has been identified. officers say 75-year-old napa resident james rambo was taking part in the "wednesday night drags" program when his car hit the wall at over 100 miles an hour... killing him.

officials say this is the first on-track fatality in the 30-year history of wednesday night drags. (grant) a man has died after being taken into custody by sonoma police. he was allegedly causing a disturbance at a mobile home park on ramon street last night. officers say the man was naked and refused to listen to their commands. he was then tased and handcuffed. the man went into medical distress and was taken to the hospital where he died. (vicki) on the peninsula-- a man is in custody after allegedly raping a woman in a parking lot in san mateo. it happened tuesday afternoon on 42nd avenue. when police arrived, they found a woman intoxicated and partially unresponsive. she told officers that a man was holding her against her will... and that he had ran off. officers found a man nearby who fit the description. he was identified as a registered sex offender named eli walker. lawrence karnow: it was a warm day even at the coastline

sonoma man is 10-million dollars richer after winning the jackpot on lottery scratchers. officials say ronald lopez stopped at the 76 gas station on arnold drive in sonoma for a drink. he then saw the 10-million dollar dazzler scratcher and decided to buy it-- and he won. lopez has the option of receiving 400-thousand dollars per year for 25 years-- or take a lump sum of 5-point-8 million dollars. the gas station will get 50-thousand dollars for selling the scratcher. costa county arrived to find that the storage locker behind their offices had been broken into and raided. natsthe theives stole about $20,000 worth computers, monitors, keyboards, and other valuable equipment. many of the stolen itmes were going to be used at camps and youth computer labs scheduled to start in june. sotoh, it was heartbreaking. . .dana fraticelli is the ceo of the boys and girls clubs . she says the loss is blow to their small operation.sotto think that someone would come here and actually steal tools and equipment for kids who can't afford other programs in the community. it was shocking and dissapointing.the contra costa county sheriff's office is investigating but so far no suspects have been identified. dana hopes that whoever did this will be brought to justice.soti hope they find them and bring them to justice. in the meantime, the boys and girls clubs is scrambling to replace their equipment. dana says they have already recieved some donations to help replace the stolen items but she is discouraging people from dropping off computer equipment.sotwe have a small staff and don't have the

(grant) taking a live look from kirkwood tonight... the high in south lake the high in south lake tahoe today was 60-degrees. and a series of late winter storms rivaling the "miracle march" of 1991 has bolstered an otherwise dismal season of snowpack in the sierra. the snowpack in the lake tahoe area grew from 25 percent to 73 percent between march 1st and march 25th. that's an increase of 48 percent.

(steve) former raider and 49er aldon smith was a no show in court today. smith was supposed be arraigned on charges that he violated a court order when he contacted the victim in a recent domestic violence incident. smith is accused of assaulting his fiance at her home in san francisco's nob hill neighborhood earlier this month. he has pleaded not guilty to the original charges. a judge has issued a 50-thousand dollar warrant for smith's arrest after he didn't appear in court-- but that will only go into effect if he misses his court date next week. (catherine) in the east bay... there was an early morning fire at a hotel in hayward.. it began about 4 a-m on the second floor of the 'americas best value inn' on whipple road. flames reached the third floor and attic. a man staying at the hotel says he saw flames and heard windows blowing out. he added that he and his girlfriend had previously been homeless.

a popular podcast has resulted in a convicted murderer getting a new trial. adnan syed gained national attention after his case was featured on the podcast "serial." an appeals court in maryland says that syed will have to be re- tried on all charges. the mayor and city council will have to foot the bill for the new trial. the decision could be appealed. syed was convicted of the 19-99 killing of a former girlfriend and sentenced to life in prison.
