at the border.pkgpresident donald trump has been a strong critic of what he considers "the country's weak immigration policies". a longstandng promise from his campaign is to build a wall along the u-s - mexican border. on wednesday, the white house announced its next step.president trump: "until we can have a wall and proper security, we're going to be guarding our border with the military."this comes after recent tweets from trump urging congress to pass border legislation ... using nuclear option if necessary to stop the flow of drugs and people. gene sverdlov / immigration attorneycertainly trump is probably playing to his base to show that he's doing something. he's angry that the wall has stalled. the funding for it is not available, and they're exploring other options. even using military pentagon money to do so. and so he wants to show that he's doing something. troops could be deployed any time now. kirstjen nielsen/homeland security secretary: "the national guard understands the urgency and the requests, so we will do it as expeditiously as possible."this isn't the first time a president has sent the national guard to the border. both presidents obama and bush did as well. due to governing laws, guardsmen assisted with intelligence and construction.the obama

( robin )illegal's crossing over into the u-s from mexico spiked last month. they spiked sharply in march.... rising 37 percent over february. the crossings typically increase in march because of better weather conditions. the number of people caught trying to cross the border last month is three times more than it was a year ago. it is not yet clear if the sharp rise will turn into a long-term surge of migration. we're going to be in a trade war.illinois congressman john shimkus is torn. he's glad steelworkers are being rehired in his district, thanks to new us tariffs on chinese steel. but he's worried about midwest farmers and manufacturers. china is the biggest buyer of american soybeans and the farm bureau has been bracing for this retaliation.farm bureau: agriculture, historically when you get into these back and forth trade relations, takes a hit.jessica smith reporting: china's announcement came hours after the trump administration unveiled the list of 1300 chinese products the u.s. would target with new tariffs.rep john shimkus (r-il): we were preaching and hoping the administration would be targeted, to go after the bad actor so you wouldn't have this unilateral attack against all products.but the president argues there is no trade war -- and his national economic advisor, larry kudlow, believes the two countries will eventually come to an agreement on trade. larry kudlow: the president believes this in his heart and soul, but sometimes the path to this kind of stuff is a little rocky. that's the way the world works.shimkus says he doesn't know the right solution, but he hopes the back and forth retaliation ends soon...rep john shimkus (r-il): there's going to be a tit for tat and hopefully it settles down//who blinks first? in washington, i'm jessica smith.
