underway tonight after police in san jose say this man-- stole guns and then threatened to shoot police-- and others-- in san francisco. tonight-- we are learning new information about the man's past. hello i'm vicki liviakis. (steve) and i'm steve aveson in for grant lodes. kron 4's rob fladeboe spoke to the suspect's father today-- where the guns were stolen. he joins us live now from san jose with an update. rob? (rob live) in a briefing here at headquarters this afternoon, san jose police said that while dustin hamilton has threatened violence against san francisco, he could be anywhere. he is homeless, armed and has a history of violence. it's not clear how he may be getting around, but police are calling on the public to keep an eye out for him plain clothes detectives were going door to door thursday in search of surveillance video that might provide some clues

about the burglary on tuesday of a home here on husted avenue the owner of that home confirmed that his son, 44 year -old dustin hamilton was the burglar and that he stole two weapons, a long gun and a handgun. he also left a threatening note behind.sgt. enrique garcia/san jose police "....he made a threat, we believe it is a credible threat because he obviously has those guns in his possession to carry out that threat..."dustin "dusty" hamilton, shown here in a high school graduation photo, along side a his recent mug shot, has been battling a drug problem and living on the streets of san francisco, says his father. he says the hand-written note was ten pages long and turned over to police.sgt. enrique garcia/san jose police "...he did mention that he wanted to kill people in the city ofsan francisco and we're not sure why be he also said that he wanted to kill police in general..."dustin hamilton has two outstanding felony warrants in san francisco for assault and vandalism. he now faces three new charges. burglary, making a criminal threat and a felon in possession of a firearm.

(vicki) (vicki) continuing our coverage tonight-- san francisco police officers were alerted yesterday about what law enforcement is calling credible threats against them. kron4's maureen kelly is at one of the locations where officers have been on the lookout for the suspect. (maureen) 44 year old dustin hamilton was known to

frequent this area at delancy and bryant...police have been out here at this location several times today....because of threats hamilton allegedly made against sfpd officers....and also threats specifically against this building located at 501 delancy. (pkghe made threats to sfpd and 501 delancy saying he was planning to shoot up as many people as possible that's what police on the street were told....and that dustin hamilton was schizophrenic and off his medication. police officers could be seen parked on the street or driving by on several occasions today... both here and in front of the building. the building is right next to the bryant street overpass. i spoke to a man who says he lived in the same homeless encampment that used to be located behind these fences here. he didn't want to appear on camera and asked his voice be altered as a condition of the interview. he says that encampment was cleared out monday... when they cleared it out and removed him of his possessions that caused a moment of instability and he took it out on on the vehicles on the street. hamilton has been arrested in the past for vandalism. a neighbor in the area said that homeless encampment had been steadly getting worse.there been more car break-ins more violent attitudes really has been just a deterioration of safety. my family won't even walk down here they might now that it's been cleaned up but in the past they would avoid this area sfpd wouldn't talk about specifics of the threats only

to say they are taking them seriously. you were made aware that he could possibly be in possession of firearms. that's our main goal is to notify the public if they see this person please contt police and authorities as soon as possible don't try making contact with the suspect as we are considering him armed and dangerous a man who lives in the building says he never had problems with the encampment but finds the threats concerning. i mean that's frightening it's definitely frightening hopefully they take care of it right? they're looking for him i assume. yeah you got to trust the police to do what they do (maureen)police say as far as they are concerned hamilton could be anywhere in the city which is why they telling all of their officers and the public to keep any eye out. maureen kelly kron4 news

new details new details are emerging in the investigation into tuesday's deadly shooting at youtube headquarters in san bruno. the only remaining hospitalized victim's condition is improving... and, we're learning more about how the shooter -- 39-year-old nasim aghdam -- got ahold of her gun. kron four's philippe djegal reports from san bruno where he spoke with police and local leaders. (philippe) on january 16th... san bruno police commander geoff caldwell says nasim aghdam legally purchased the gun she used in tuesday's shooting from a gun shop in san diego. a 9 millimeter smith and wesson pistol similar to this one. commander caldwell says aghdam opened fire at youtube headquaters, shooting several rounds... then reloaded

another magazine, and continued firing before turning the gun on herself. rico medina/mayor- "it does shake the community -- it was a crisis." san bruno mayor rico medina, says he's working with city manager connie jackson and other local agencies to try to move forward... evaluate what happened, and find ways to prevent another shooting like this. for the first time since it was lockeddown tuesday -- youtube headquarters is back open. though police and security guards are still monitoring all e ntries and exits. jackson says the first three officers on-scene tuesday entered the building quickly and helped minimize the damage. connie jackson/city manager- they deployed in a spectacular manner and we are very very proud, uh, not only of the work they did, but the results." shortly after the incident... san bruno police say six officers traveled down to southern california... and with help from the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives... executed two search warrants related to this case. those officers returned to the bay area wednesday night. the 36-year-old man who was critically injured during the shooting is the only victim still receiving treatment at san francisco general hospital. his condition has been upgraded to fair. in san bruno, philippe djegal, kron four news.

(steve) chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is here now to talk about the timing of the storm. lawrence karnow: showers have started and we are getting ready for heavy rain. doppler radar is showing the rain picking up now. but it won't become heavy until after midnight. flood watches have now been posted for the north bay mountains and valleys as well as the santa cruz mountains. we could see as much as 4 to 6 inches of rain with some isolated amounts as high as 8 inches. the major rivers are not forecast to flood but we will see some of the smaller creeks and streams rise rapidly and flooding is

possible. the commute will be bad with heavy rain and ponding on the roads. it looks bad all day but worst in the morning. showers will turn to heavy rain tonight and tomorrow morning. rain will continue all day. it will become heavy again late on friday night into early saturday morning. there is a chance of thunderstorms too with the tropical air. highs tomorrow will be very mild and in the 60s. sunday should be dry with mostly sunny skies. there is a chance of showers again on tuesday and thursday.

(vicki) there are also flooding concerns in san francisco. kron 4's maureen kelly tweeted out this picture of flood barriers today. this is at 17th and folsom street. the san francisco public utilities commission put up the barriers today-- as we expect flooding from the storm. (steve) in the east bay... a contra costa county deputy has been arrested, accused of having sex with two inmates. this is the deputy-turned-suspect...26 year old patrick morseman. he was arrested yesterday in richmond. the sheriff says investigators interviewed the victims, who consented to the sexual activity, found evidence and got search warrants...then proceeded to book moreseman 24 hours after the crimes were reported. investigators are working to terminate moreseman's employment and help the victims. morseman was booked into county jail and has since been released from custody on one-hundred thousand dollars bail. (steve) there are no reports of injuries or major damage after an earthquake near los angeles. witnesses say they felt the ground shaking across the area this afternoon. according to the u-s geological survey, the 5-point-3 magnitude quake was centered in the ocean near channel islands. firefighters say they later inspected some of the key infrastructure in los angeles. they say the transportation points, buildings, dams, and

power lines surveyed are intact. but some minor structural damage was reported on channel islands. new tonight at 5... the search for missing kids in a mysterious seaside car crash in mendocino county has been suspended. heavy rain is expected in the area over the next few days. the hart family's s-u-v crashed on a rocky shoreline below a cliff last month. the bodies of sarah and jennifer hart... and three of their adopted children were found in and near the vehicle on march 26th. but three other kids are still missing. a large-scale search and rescue operation has been underway, with about 80 people combing the surrounding area yesterday. the mendocino county sheriff said no one was wearing a seatbelt and he's no longer calling it an accident, he's calling it a "crime." (steve) the master tenant of the ghost ship warehouse is trying to get charges against him dismissed. derick almena is facing 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter-- after the warehouse burned in december of 2016. earlier this year-- both derick almena and max harris pleaded not guilty to those charges. in the motion to dismiss the

charges-- his lawyer says prosecutors can't say almena was negligent because they don't know how the fire started. the motion also says almena was given the impression from oakland city officials that there weren't any safety concerns at the warehouse. a hearing on the motions to dismiss the charges is on may 11th. "we're working out systems now. we've called out the national guard and, uh, we're doing a real job."(vicki) president trump now says he wants to see two to four thousand troops along the mexican border.still a lot of unanswered questions tonight about his plan to deploy the national guard,california governor jerry brown says he needs answers before he makes a commitment.pam moore is in the newsroom with what we know .pam? (pam) the president says, he wants the soldiers to protect the border until his wall is built... but that is not quite enough for california officials.they want to know exactly what the national guard will do, for how long

... and who will pay for it. "mr president, what about the national guard..."among the unanswered questions: will the guard soldiers even have bullets in their guns. according to mexican officials they will be unarmed. is that the truth? we, as you know, in the past- they have had uh- in 2006 there were weapons, so it has been done before, the weapons didn't have ammunition as you know- so we're continuing the negotiation. under federal law, the military cannot be used for law enforcement.in 2006, the 64=hundred guardsmen and women at the border could not arrest anyone.they were used for surveillance and support. "watching the border... it might be as simple as two guys in a vehicle or as fancy as a high tech national guard helicopter with special camera equipment."one thing we do know: it will be expensive. two previous deployments by president's bush and obama cost an estimated one point three billion dollars.critics say the guard's effectiveness is low ... speaking to reporters aboard air force one. president trump says he didn't know why his lawyer, michael cohen, made the payment or where he got the money. daniels says she had a sexual encounter with the president in 2006 and was paid as part of a non-disclosure agreement she is seeking to invalidate. (vicki) hurricane experts with colorado state univeristy say this upcoming hurricane season could be as busy as last year's.(vicki) the university issued its preliminary seasonal forecast today. experts say the upcoming season is slightly above-average with 14 named storms. seven of those are expected to become hurricanes, and out of those seven at least three are expected to be major hurricanes. hurricane seasons usually last from june through november. the university will provide an update in may.

side crash test-- the insurance institute for highway safety's test... is designed to show how well front-seat passengers are protected in a violent collision. it's supposed to mimic the impact of a vehicle with another car or a tree or pole. the escape earned a "poor" rating-- the cabin was crushed inward and side airbags did not deploy. the escape was the only small s-u-v in a group of seven tested to not pass. ford points out that the escape has earned high marks in all other government and insurance institute crash tests. (steve) happening now-- it's distracted driving awareness month. and officers across the state are cracking down on people who aren't paying attention behind the wheel. joe moeller has the story. law enforcement agencies in california are going to crack down on distracted drivers for distracted driving awareness month. local authorities say over the years, they have seen an increase in distracted driving.the chp and other agencies will be pulling over anyone who's driving with a phone in their hands.

we are always tracking local stories.. here's a look at what's happening in your neighborhood-- (vicki) our top story tonight-- police in san francisco are looking for a man who threatened to shoot people-- and officers. we first learned of this incident this afternoon. police in san jose say 44-year-old dustin hamilton broke into his father's home-- and stole their guns. his father then said hamilton left a 10--page note threatening to shoot people and officers in san francsco. hamilton's father says his son bad been living on the streets-- and battling drug addiction. officers continue to search for him tonight and say he could be anywhere. (steve) the man involved in a two-hour standoff with petaluma police officers tuesday afternoon has died. sheriff deputies with sonoma county say 24-year-old luis alberto garcia-vara died of his injuries on wednesday. garcia-vara was shot in the

abdomen on lakeville circle near the adobe creek golf club. officers were officers were responding to a domestic dispute. an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death. (vicki) on the peninsula... daly city police officers have been cleared of wrong-doing in the death of warren ragudo. in january police were called to a home where there was a fight between family members. when police arrived... ragudo's father and uncle were trying to restrain him. one of the officers tased him twice with a stun gun in his lower back. a short time later... ragudo died. the district attorney says the officer's conduct was reasonable. an autopsy report revealed ragudo had meth in his system. (steve) in the east bay... 2 east bay animal shelters are offering free pet adoptions today through saturday. contra costa animal services is making the generous offer at its martinez and pinole locations to free up crowded shelters. new pet parents will only have to pay a 20-dollar licensensing fee to take a pet home.

(vicki) health care providers and authorities across the country have been struggling to help the thousands of people suffering from opioid addiction. today, there is a new recommendation from the top doctor in the u.s., issuing a rare advisory on a drug that helps combat overdoses. steve nannes has more. dr. jerome adams, surgeon general: to stop the opioid epidemic, we must stop the bleeding. the surgeon general of the united states issued a rare public advisory thursday, in the latest effort to combat the opioid crisis. the nation's top doctor, jerome adams, is calling for wider use of the overdose-reversing drug naloxone, commonly known as narcan.this advisory

applies to ...-patients taking opioids for pain -individuals misusing prescription drugs -people using illict opioids like fentanyl or heroin-health care practitioners -family and friends of possible abusers -and others who come into contact with people at risk for opioid overdosedr. jerome adams, surgeon general: if you or someone you know is at risk for an overdose, carry and know how to use naloxone. an easy to use, lifesaving medication that can reverse the effects of an overdose. last week, the cdc released a report that revealed overdose fatalities are on the rise, with more than 63,000 deaths in 20-16 alone. about two thirds of them involved prescription or illicit opioid drug use.dr. jerome adams, surgeon general: an estimated 2.1 million people in the u.s. struggle with an opioid use disorder. there is a person dying every 12.5 minutes and more than half other those are dying at home. also this week - the head of the food and drug administration says he wants all doctors to undergo mandatory training on prescribing opioids to patients. (vicki) happening now in the east bay-- a crackdown on carpool cheaters. the metropolitan transportation commission is testing new camera systems that might one day be able to spot carpool lane violators. kron 4's charles clifford has the story. natsfor the past few weeks , the metropolitan transportation commission has been testing a network of cameras designed to catch drivers using hov lanes illegally. john goodwin is with the mtc.sotthis is part of a multi pronged effort to that we have undertaken for years to squeeze more efficency out of the bay area freeway network.goodwind says that their research has shown that along some busy highways as many as 1 in 3 cars in the hov lane shouldn't be there. those violaters are also slowing down carpool lanes.sot we are obliged to have a carpool lane network that runs at 45 miles per hour or greater 90 percent of the time. we are failing to hit that mark and the reason for that is we have people using the carpool lanes that aught not be there.over the next few months, the mtc will actually be testing camera systems from three different vendors. this is only a test to see if the cameras can acuratly gauge the number of occupants in a vehicle, no citations are being issued. once the testing

it's been 15 years since the modern electronic cigarette was developed. but these days, vaping has a new version. it's called "juuling" and it's raising more than just concerns that teenagers can secretly choose this smoking alternative.eyewitness news first told you in december about juuling. a juul's sleek, usb thumb drive design isn't the only thing that makes it unlike any e-cigarette or vape. what juuling can do to a young person's body is getting some serious attention."it's not hard to sneak it in by their parents or take it to school." geisinger pulmonologist navitha ramesh, md is talking about a flavored tobacco alternative that's odorless and doesn't produce much smoke. it's called juuling and what it does produce is quite a nicotine punch. charged and heated in a usb port, each juul cartridge or pod is equipped with 200 puffs of the stimulant or the equivalent of an entire pack of standard cigarettes. "if a child has one juul a week and in five weeks that means about 100 cigarettes and that would mean that he is a smoker by

our standards."all that juuling gives teen users a nicotine rush. one unidentified teenage girl said, "i did it and i was like whoa... like this feels good for the two split seconds you have it, but then like researching it further i was like this is so bad for you." dr. ramesh added, "if you start off at a young age like that you are prone to get addicted in your later years of life."a nicotine dependence can lead to behavioral problems for growing teens. the pulmonologist sees another problem besides nicotine addiction and that's inflammation. "if your airways get inflamed you start producing a lot of mucus," said dr. ramesh.those aren't the only risks that worry this physician. it's what's in a juul besides nicotine that's should be at least as parents of teens. "they (juuls) have propylene glycol. they have other agents that are also potential irritants to the lungs and they are carcinogenic or cancer causing," said dr. ramesh.juul labs strongly condemns use of its products by minors and is working with school districts to institute educational programs. the sale of juuls makes up nearly half of the e- cigarette market with teen usage driving up sales. (philippe) nasim aghdam fired several shots inside youtube heaquarters tuesday... reloaded another magazine... and continued firing before eventually turning her 9 millimeter smith and wesson pistol on herself. that's according to san bruno police commander geoff caldwell. who adds the first arriving officers entered the building during the threat. bravery commended by san bruno city manager connie jackson.connie jackson/city manager- "our ability to arrive so quickly and to take charge of the situation absolutely, if nothing else, assured the people on the scene and allowed for the injured to be, uh, handled quickly and efficiently." commander caldwell says aghdam legally purchased her gun on january 16th at a gun shop in san diego. shortly after the shooting, caldwell says six police officers traveled down to southern california to execute two search warrants related to this case. they were assisted by federal

has been arrested , after authorities say, he had sex with two inmates. 26 year old patrick morseman was arrested yesterday in richmond. the sheriff says, investigators interviewed the victims, who consented to the sexual activity. authorities found evidence and got search warrants... then proceeded to book morseman... 24- hours after the crimes were reported. investigators are working to terminate his employment and help the victims. morseman was booked into county jail... he has since been released from custody on one- hundred thousand dollars bail. (pam) in the east bay... derick almena -- the master tenant of the ghost ship warehouse-- is trying to get the charges against him.. dismissed. almena is facing 36- counts of involuntary manslaughter -- after the warehouse burned in december of 2016. earlier this year-- both derick almena and max harris pleaded not guilty to those charges. in the motion to dismiss the charges -- his lawyer says, prosecutors cannot say almena was negligent, because they do not know how the fire started. the motion also says, almena was given the impression from oakland city officials, that there were not any safety concerns at the warehouse. a hearing on the motion to dismiss the charges .... will be on may 11th. be on may 11th. charges .... will be on may 11th. against a retired fertility doctor in idaho.(steve) she claims the doctor didn't just help her mother get pregnant -- he used his own sperm instead of donor semen. reporter kaitlin loukides has more. when we stopped by the doctor's home--nats: hi! a man who goes by jared told us dr. mortimer and his wife are out of the state until next week and is unavailable to comment. but he did say he was one of the many who was birthed by the doctor known for giving back to the community over the years. which is where kelly rowlette comes in. in 2017 she discovered her ancestry.com results showed mortimer didn't just help give birth to her -- he was her biological father. rowlette and her parents are now suing the retired obgyn-- claiming he used his own sperm to inseminate her mom back in 1980. he told the family he used the father's sperm along with an anonymous donor they picked out -- but the family claims that didn't happen. we reached out to the family but their attorney released this statement. around 9:30 p.m. police said they got a call about a woman passed out behind the wheel of her car in a gas station at 2246 south harlem avenue.when officers arrived, they saw an open bottle of crown royal in the front passenger seat. officers in riverside said she tried to fill her car with kerosene instead of gasoline. (riverside police department) she was charged with drunk driving, not having insurance and driving without a license, which was revoked on drunk driving charges.riverside police said she was "combative" with officers the entire time. she lied about her name, date of birthdate, social security number, and also lied about being pregnant. she has six duis in six states, according to police.in one incident, she was with her children in the car, allegedly nursing one child while driving drunk.schleicher's 11 children have been taken away from her in minnesota, all related to drunk and impaired driving situations, according to police.

here is something you do not see everyday.... four people in charlotte, north carolina were detained for what police call a... paintball shootout. you can see in this video two cars splattered with paint. authorities say the two cars were speeding througout the streets. police even chased one of the cars until it stopped. what charges being filed is still being determined by police. (pam) a team of volunteers with an airplane recently saved more than one hundred animals from a high-kill region in new mexico.
