early this morning. and tonight-- hundreds of people who live nearby are out of their homes as the investigation continues. good evening i'm vicki liviakis. (catherine) and i'm catherine heenan in for grant lodes. several roads in the area remain closed tonight. it's in the area of clayton road and galindo street. that's right in the heart of downtown concord-- near the bart station and todos santos plaza. kron 4's terisa estacio is in concord with the latest on the investigation. (estacio)they have not - they need to go in and begin investigating this fire, and they can't go into the structure until it is safe to do so take a look behind me there are still active hot spots - fire officials say it is not safe for anyone to go in - until the building is secure. it was early this morning when the fire erupted. (estacio) enormous flames tore through the night sky - the fire burning so hot and so fast. residents at the nearby complex raced to grab what they could so they could run for their lives. sot/tc: we just heard the popping and the building just collapsing.

two people suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to the hospital. in total about 260 people were forced to evacuate fire officials say the scene of the fire was renaissance two. it was the second phase of a complex housing 180 units. it was about 60 percent done. damages are now hovering around 55 million dollars. it took several hours to contain the giant blaze and throughout the day hot spots fared up. residents at neighoring renaissance one returned to their homes for a short 5 minutes to gather up critical items - and food for their beloved pets. mark ocampo. he is scared. it has been rough. mark ocampo and his family took a car service out of the area and sheltered at a family members home now they stood in line to retrieve their cars not knowing when they will be able to come back home. ocampo. "i grabbed what i could my teddy bear, i had it since i was six, i couldn't leave it behind. the large blaze triggered a public health advisory for several hours - and the closure of several streets. official. we are tryign to get things back to normal as fast as possible.

an estimated 40=million dollars damage but the apartment coplex was rebuilt. this one was caused by overheated construction equipment.in 2016 a 105=unit apartment project in emeryville suffered heavy damage. ... the fire went to six alarms.a few months later, a predawn fire near lake merrtt destroyed a 41-unit project that had been under construction for about a year and then in may of last year, the emeryville complex was hit again. this time a man was seen riding a bicycle onto the site shortly before the flames broke out.police believe he was responsible for all three of the latest fires.despite a 100=thousand dollar reward, he remains at large. (vicki) breaking news we are following tonight-- a standoff with a home invasion suspect in the east bay is now over. the incident happened this afternoon in the area of wagoner drive and coronado way in livermore. police say the suspect was holed up inside a home. after several hours of negotiations.. the swat team entered the home and arrested the suspect without injuries. (vicki) happening now... health officials are warning about an active pulmonary tuberculosis case at an elementary school. it's happening in fairfield at laurel creek elementary school. district officials say a person at that school recently developed the active tuberculosis. they say if your child has come into contact with that person you will get a letter in the mail. and solano county public health officials will be at the school testing those students. t-b is spread

from person to person through the air. there will be a town hall meeting at the school's cafeteria tomorrow night. that is when county health officials will answer questions from parents and staff. (catherine) a federal court hearing in the firearms case of the man acquitted of the murder of kate steinle-- has been postponed. jose garcia zarate will now appear in court next month. today's hearing was postponed because garcia- zarate's defense attorney was ill. he's charged in federal court with being an ex-felon in possession of a gun. in november, he was acquitted in the pier 14 shooting death of kate steinle.. (catherine) a man accused of planning a christmas day bombing and shooting attack in san francisco will plead guilty in a federal case. court records show everitt jameson will enter a plea june 4th in federal court in fresno. prosecutors say jameson, who's from modesto, told undercover federal agents that he planned to use pipe bombs to channel victims into pier 39 so he could shoot them.

hikers...rattlesnake season is in full swing here in the bay area. this weekend a man hiking on mt tam had to be airlifted to the hospital after being bit. kron4's maureen kelly talked with a man who's been rescuing and relocating rattlers for nearly 30 years about what people should know if they encounter the creatures.(pkg) shake rattle and strike.....al wolf with sonoma county reptile rescue is showing off a particulary orney rattlesnake he's captured lately. he's out in glen ellen today picking up a rattler that bit a man's dog yesterday. she was relaxing in the shade and i think the snake came out on it's own and she went to sniff see what it was and the snake better ginger the cocker spaniel had to spend the night at the vet and get some anti venom but she's fine.this is the 3rd

snake spotted by the dogs owner this week. one was killed by a weed wacker.he called the non profit to collect the one still slithering rather than kill it. i don't really feel like we should kill him i mean unless were trying to protect ourselves but they kill mice their part in the world that we live in so so it's just best to keep them aliveal wolf has been catching and releasing the critters for nearly 30 years. he says he's been bit over a dozen times but says people really don't have a reason to fear them. this weekend a hiker on mt tam was airlifted to a local hospital after being bit. wolf says while the venom can be fatal....it's very rare. between five and 7000 people are better each year in the united states and less than one person dies each year so everything is in your favor he says he's picked up 22 snakes this week already. pharmacy -- in the singer's 20- 16 overdose death. the wrongful death lawsuit claims the hospital failed to give prince proper care after his first opioid overdose a week before he died. the suit also names a doctor and various pharmacists at the drugstore. prince died from an accidental fentanyl overdose. (catherine) federal officials are cracking down on the underage use ofa popular e- cigarette... it's called juul - and it's based in san francisco. this follows months of complaints from parents, politiciansand school administrators.. the f-d-a has issued warnings to 40 retail and online stores as part of the crackdown on illegal sales to children.. juul looks a little like a small flash drive ..and some say that makes it easier to use discreetly. like other e-cigarettes, it's an electronic device that vaporizes liquid nicotine into an inhalable vapor... in a statement, juul labs says it agrees that the illegal sales to minors are unacceptable. saying it has in place programs to prevent and act upon the violations at retail and online marketplaces. the san francisco company says it's working with the f-d-a, lawmakers, parents and community members to combat

(catherine) tonight at 5:30... kron 4 is always tracking local stories. here's a look at what's happening in your neighborhood right now.. .(vicki) in the east bay... fire investigators are trying to figure out what caused a massive fire at an apartment complex under construction. the fire broke out just before 1:00 this morning near the intersection of clayton road and galindo street in concord. two people were injured-- suffering from smoke inhalation. and more than 250 people had evacuate from the neighboring building. kron 4's lydia pantazes spoke to one man tried to help get his neighbors to safety. .. there are dozens of people here at the evacuation center. it's located at the first presbyterian church on colfax and salvio in concord. 134-units were evacuatedthey live in the renaissance park apartments here in concord.one man told us he heard the smoke alarm at at 12:30 this morning

girl who said she was trying to get away from someone....and then determined she was a victim of human trafficking. the two suspects were arrested after being found sitting in a nearby car they face human trafficking and conspiracy charges. (vicki) in the north bay. petaluma police have been approved to outfit officers with a anti-opioid medication. naloxone...or narcan...reverses the effects of an overdose of heroin and other opioids including synthetic fentanyl. officers are now carrying naloxone...after a spike in the number of overdoses in petaluma... that led to deaths and hospitalizations. (vicki) also in the north bay. a possible residential burglary suspect who fled police...drowne d...when he jumped into the san rafael canal in an escape attempt. the possible burglary happened at a home on north san pedro road. once at the scene...officers spotted a man standing in the driveway. he ignored the officers commands...and jumped into a nearby canal. officers threw flotation items to the suspect...however he dissapeared under water.

family was devastated and frightened -- after someone stole their car-- with their baby inside. by chance-- a local reporter from kron 4's sister station in florida-- found the child -- abandoned in a parking lot. mark douglas has the story.. we were hunting for someone else on a different story when photojournalist michael egger found the infant abandoned and alone in this apartment parking lot."i had no idea why somebody would leave a baby there.." after michael made sure the baby was ok...i called 911:"we're very concerned about the baby being left here in the parking lot "i have the baby"

that's when we discovered this baby had been kidnapped by a car thief:"just happened a few minutes ago...whoaaa...oh my god" before long police were swarming the crime scene... and through it all the baby boy was just fine:"he was not sweating he was not hot. he was sitting there with he was sleeping" his family who had been praying for his safe return: "we were just thrilled when they told us and they didn't even tell us right away because they wanted to make sure it was the right baby" the family asked to remain anonymous--but also wanted to meet the man who found their baby boy:"we really really truly appreciate it...you're welcome." are now responding ... after being hit with penalties from the state department of public health, reports say, the hospitals failed to maintain complaince with their licensing requirments in recent years. kaiser permanente medical center on macarthur boulevard in oakland... was fined 75-thousand dollars for a 20-16 case, after a person was found dead in a chair. highland hospital on 31st street in oakland... was fined more than $39-thousand dollars... for a 20-17 incident, after the hospital failed to follow policies and procedures for the prevention and control of infections among their patients. governor jerry brown's plan to create a california online college.... got another boost today. it is in the planning stage right now -- an all- online college, as part of the state's community colleges -- it needs to be approved by lawmakers this year ... our sacramento reporter kody leibowitz says, we know what the first class would be. -- typing on computer (;01) it'll be an all- online college -- run through the community college system in california. back in january -- governor jerry brown first proposed an online school for those without the degree or skills to move up in their careers.van ton-quinlivan, vice chancellor of california community colleges "there are millions of adult workers in california who are at a career plateau unless they are able to access industry-valued credentials in ways that are

(pam) veterinarians are hoping a c-t scan will help them threat an ailing black rhino... in illinois. seven- year- old layla.... underwent a c-t scan on thursday, which is believed to be a first for her species. the 23-hundred pound patient was too big for the brookfield zoo hospital. so the vets used a portable c-t scanner in layla's habitat, with the help of 40 zoo employees. layla has been struggling with a sinus problem which makes it hard for her to breathe. the scan detected abnormal tissue - and the vets will use the results for layla's future treatment. is not just a cute animal story -- it is a conservation story. black- and- white ruffed lemurs are classified as a critically endangered species. as for the newborn's name -- the park will let the public vote for their favorite... on facebook. facebook.favorite... on for their favorite... on facebook. lawrence karnow: we stated with low clouds and fog but finished with mostly sunny skies except at the coast. it wias cooler today with most highs in the 70s inland with cooler 50s at the coast. doppler radar continues to show no rain. but the satellite image shows plenty of low clouds and fog. you can see the area of low pressure swirling off of the coast. we will see cooler temperatures into the weekend as that low approaches the bay area. there's even a slight chance of showers mainly to the north on friday and saturday. but it is a something called a cutoff low and they are very hard to forecast. if it shifts further south we could see showers elsewhere too. tomorrow will start with clouds and clear to the coast in the middle of the day. highs will be cooler in the 70s inland, 60s and 70s around the bay and 50s near the coast. more clouds and below normal temperatures return on thursday into the weekend.
