breaking news we're following tonight... we've just learned that prosecutors used ancestry websites to arrest the suspected golden gate killer. good evening i'm grant lodes.(catherine) and i'm catherine heenan...in for vicki liviakis.police reportedly compared a sample from one of the crime scenes -- to d-n-a that had been sent to an ancestry website.. a match was reporteldy found to a possible relative of the suspect... investigators used that information to help trackdown joseph deangelo...and explored online family trees to identify him. we've reached out to ancestry-dot-com and 23-and-me and - both deny assisting law enforcement in this case. (grant) earlier we talked to the alameda county district attorney about the dna method used to catch the suspect. she would not go into specifics -- but said this... (grant) and now we're learning

the suspect may be connected to the 19-75 murder of a fresno area community college teacher. if the link is confirmed, it would boost the number of murder victims to 13. today the fbi continued to search deangelo's home in citrus heights... kron4's sara stinson was there. reporter live: i'm standing in front of the home of joseph deangelo, a quiet negihborhood in citrus heights. the fbi is here along with sheriff's officials from the 10 counties the golden state murder case has impacted. now they are all here investigating the scene. the 40-year-old manhunt for deangelo ended here at his home yesterday morning.law enforcement began surveillance

on deangelo a few days prior and found some discarded d-n-a from him.this is what led them to file two murder charges dating back to a case in 19- 78.the d-n-a also led officials to believe he is the golden state murder and east area rapist who terrorized many areas in california including in the bay area. deangelo was taken into custody here at his home without incident.a major victory for families of the golden state killer's victims. bruce harrington: to the entire reservoir of victims out there, my sadness is with you. for the 51 ladies who were brutally raped in this crime scene, sleep better tonight. he isn't coming through the window. he's now in jail and he's history. investigators say he was a former police officer in auburon. now they are investigating if he may have committed while on duty and if being a police officer helped him get away with it all. neighbors here in this citrus heights area describe him as a nice guy, but did see him have some random loud outbursts. deangelo has been denied bail and is expected to be in court tomorrow morning.live in citrus heights, sara stinson, kron 4 news.

"bill cosby, three words for you: guilty! guilty! guilty!"(cath erine) the entertainer once known as 'america's dad' is now facing the prospect of spending the rest of his life in prison. today a jury convicted bill cosby of drugging and sexually assaulting a young woman fourteen year ago. cosby remains free on one=million dollars bail tonight, pending his sentencing. (catherine) cosby went straight home after the verdict ... here he is arriving at his pennsylvania home. he was convicted of three counts of sexual assault, each carrying

a sentence of up to ten years. cosby is 80 years old, so even if the sentences are served concurrently, there's a good chance he'll spend the rest of his life behind bars, "mr cosby are you ready to go to prison soon?"cosby's attorney says he plans a vigorous appeal. "the fight is not over."the jury found that in january 2004, cosby drugged and raped temple university employee andrea constand at his home. she went to police, but the d=a at the time said there was insufficient evidence. constand filed a civil suit and in 2006, cosby paid her more than three million dollars.over the next decade, dozens more accusers came forward in 2015, newly elected d=a kevin steele reopened the constand case and filed charges.cosby's first trial last year ended in a hung jury. today the victorious prosecutor says cosby has evaded justice for far too long. he used his celebrity, he used his wealth he used his network of supporters to help him conceal his crimes. the d=a wanted the judge to rescind

against 49ers star reuben foster... are based on lies. so says the alleged victim's attorney. as kron four's rob fladeboe reports now, the new revelations paint an entirely different picture of the case, one that cold weigh heavily in foster's favor. arraigned on domestic violence charges earlier this month, the 49ers reuben foster is alleged to have battered his former girlfriend elissa ennis. prosecutors say she accused foster of dragging her by the hair and punching her, puncturing an ear drum. now, her attorney says ennis lied. in a statement, attorney stephanie rickard says..."ennis' injuries were the result of a physical fight with another woman, and that foster tried to end his relationship with ennis after he learned of the fight." legal analyst steven clark. steven clark/legal analyst ".....this is a huge deal for the reuben foster defense team, they know they are up against the clock with the 49ers and this development buys reuben foster a lot more time with the team until this sorts itself out..."ennis now says that foster never struck her. evidence is now said to include a video of the fight

now-- crews are working to clean up debris from a fire in downtown concord-- so demolition can begin on the building. the fire broke out early tuesday morning-- and as of this morning there were still flare ups. streets in the area remain closed tonight as there are fears the building might collapse. 250 people who live in the apartment building next door -- are still out of their homes. fire investigators held a news conference moments ago... they say those people will still not be allowed back into their homes tonight. eight of those apartments have been red tagged. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. we will have much more tonight on kron4 news at 6. time now to check on our weather... with chief meteorologist lawrence karnow. lawrence karnow: it took a long time for clouds to clear today and as a result the temperatures were not as warm. it has been breezy too which will bring clouds back into the bay and valleys tonight. a few thunderstorms popped up over the sierra in the afternoon and we could see more over the next few days. on the satellite you can see the low pressure center now off the coast of northern california. it will continue to wander toward the bay area the next few days to bring more clouds and even a chance of some showers to the bay area. tomorrow will be partly cloudy with isolated coastal drizzle. highs will be cooler and in the 60s in the warmest spots inland, low to mid 60s around the bay and 50s to low 60s at the coast. there is a slight chance of showers friday night and into saturday morning. temperatures this weekend will be running well below average. warm spring sunshine should return toward the middle of next week.

two waitresses in alameda were robbed this week.. police say it happened late tuesday night on pacific avenue near webster street. this comes just two weeks after a woman was murdered in the same area. kron four's philippe djegal talked to investigators to see if the cases are connected. (philippe) these days... alameda police officers are keeping a closer eye on the business district on the west end of town... and, those who live and work here are okay with that.francesca velasquez/lives and works in area- "i think it'd be beneficial to every worker and everybody who walks down the street." two weeks after a violent attempted robbery caught on camera near the pho ahn dao (dow) restaurant resulted in a 61-year-old woman's murder... the city's first of the year... less than one-thousand feet away down the street... two waitresses leaving another restaurant were robbed.rodney

hobbs/lives and works in area- "it's always been a safe place, but uh, for some reason now, things seem to be changing a lot more. people are getting a lot more desperate." at around 10-15 tuesday night... lieutenant wayland gee says the waitresses were attacked on their walk to their cars, parked on the 700 block of pacific avenue.lt. wayland gee/alameda police- "four to six, uh, black an or hispanic males, uh, in their late teens, early 20s that came out of a two sedans that drove up." lieutenant gee says both victims were knocked to the ground and their purses were stolen. one 59 and the other 62-years-old. gee says the 59-year-old may have been hit with a bottle. but neither needed to be hospitalized.lt. wayland gee/alameda police- "our investigation doesn't show anything that relates this robbery to our earlier, uh, uh, homicide robbery that occured." the restaurant manager says her employees are recovering well... and, expects them to return back to work in a few days. in alameda, philippe djegal, kron four news. trial after escaping from a psychiatric hospital.(grant) randall saito escaped the hospital in hawaii last year and flew to stockton. saito was aquitted for the killing of a woman back in 19-79 by reason of insanity. authorities arrested him shortly after he got to stockton. now he faces a trial that is scheduled to be in june. (grant) the university of california is not going to discuss tuition hikes at their regents meeting next month. u-c president janet napolitano made that announcement today. she says officials and students at the system's 10 campuses will push legislators for more funding until the final state budget is voted on in june. napolitano says if state funding is not secured-- the u- c will consider a modest tuition increase for next year. the university had previously proposed raising in-state tuition and fees by 342-dollars per year. for your health tonight... a confirmed hantavirus infection has prompted a public health warning. one person has been diagnosed with an infection caused by hantavirus in santa cruz county. hantavirus pulmonary syndrome... often known as h-p-s... is caused by a virus found in rodent urine, droppings and saliva. people typically contract the infection when entering or

(catherine) starting in the north bay --- petaluma police have arrested a sex offender. they were looking for thomas steger after he failed to register as a sex offender in petaluma and rohnert park. officers found him behind the petaluma target store yesterday.

steger ran from police but was eventually detained. officers say he had a police scanner and aa replica glock style gun in his possesion. steger was booked into the sonoma county jail. .. (catherine) three people are behind bars tonight-- accused of stealing from a beauty supply store and a home depot in santa rosa. police say 2 women and a man stole from the l-a beauty and hair supply store on west college avenue. later the same day... police say the thieves headed to a home depot where they stole a shopping cart full of power tools and other merchandise. police were able to chase them down and arrest them. (grant) a judge is allowing a free speech lawsuit to proceed against officials at u-c berkeley. the lawsuit was filed by the berkeley college republicans and the young america's foundation. the suit comes after two scheduled events featuring conservative speakers were cancelled. violent demonstrations occurred during both events. now a federal judge says this result was due to the

(grant) an officer with the san ramon police department is being treated at a hospital after crashing his motorcycle earlier this morning. these are photos of the crash. the crash was south of brentwood on deer valley and chadbourne roads. the officer was quickly flown to a trauma center. authorities say the injured officer is in good spirits. investigators say so far there is no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved. alvarado has the story. protesters gathered outside the san bernardino county courthouse in joshua tree before a hearing for daniel panico and mona kirk. the married couple was arrested in february, and charged with three felony counts of child abuse after police say they found their three children living in a makeshift shelter. panico briefly answered questions before he entered the courthouse.natsot/daniel panico "we're hoping they'll drop all charges today." but that did not happen. once again, the hearing was delayed. and the continued delays upset their friends, like jackie

say this opioid problem is taking aim at high school teens and young adults. kron 4's j.r. stone reports. students remembering their former classmate at a memorial in san bruno on wednesday. just over two months after that young man...18 year old david ochoa overdosed on xanax laced with fentanyl.they were up late playing video games until 2 in the morning...they all woke up and he didn'tit was eventually determined that it was the fentanyl that had killed david. a drug that can be 100 times more powerful than heroin or morphine...it's unclear how many pills david had...possibly 4 or 5 according to his family. experts told them one could have killed him too. sound like a rare case? not at all...we've seen recent cases like this in san francisco, petaluma, and san bruno just to name a few.it's the new party drug to haveit's becoming an epidemicpeople are overdosingdavid's mom karin wants to get the word out to parents and their children that these drugs are dangerous. these former classmates of david tell me that they can get a pill or xanax bar as it is called for 5 dollars illegally. david's parents put him in an outpatient program when they found pills he had bought months before, he had already graduated from high school, and was working when the tragedy hit...he didn't stand a chance nobody stands a chance against fentanyl you don't get a fighting chance you take it and that's it... and now because of that decision....karin is left without a son.the other thing that eats at me is that i miss

irwin was the australian animal activist and exuberant host of a tv show called the "crocodile hunter." he died in 2006 after being stung by a stingray while diving off australia's north coast. lawrence karnow: it took a long time for clouds to clear today and as a result the temperatures were not as warm. it has been breezy too which will bring clouds back into the bay and valleys tonight. a few thunderstorms popped up over the sierra in the afternoon and we could see more over the next few days. on the satellite you can see the low pressure center now off the coast of northern california. it will continue to wander toward the bay area the next few days to bring more clouds and even a chance of some showers to the bay area. tomorrow will be partly cloudy with isolated coastal drizzle. highs will be cooler and in the 60s in the warmest spots inland, low to mid 60s around the bay and 50s to low 60s at the coast. there is a slight chance of showers friday night and into saturday morning. temperatures this weekend will be running well below average. warm spring sunshine should return toward the middle of next week.
