grant lodes.(catherine) and i'm catherine heenan in for vicki liviakis. deangelo was arraigned today in a sacramento courtroom... kron4's kody leibowitz joins us now live with details.. kody? joseph deangelo made his first court appearance in wheelchair... the arraignment only lasted a few minutes.... the defendant looked tired... despondent.. when the judge asked him to verify his name -- his answer was barely audible.joseph james deangelo formally arraigned in a packed sacramento county courtroom... his first court appearance since his arrest this week -- and accusations of him being the infamous golden state killer.the former police officer -- wheelchair bound wearing an orange jail garb . he was charged formally with two counts of murder with special circumstances for the 1978 killings of brian and katie maggiore.he also faces two murder charges in ventura county. (catherine) ged-match posted a statement on its website - after learning that its database was used to identify the golden state killer. it says... " although we were not approached by law enforcement

or anyone else about this case or about the d-n-a, it has always been ged-match's policy to inform users that the database could be used for other uses, as set forth in the site policy. and added that while the database was created for genealogical research...it's important that participants understand the possible use of their d-n-a... including identification of relatives that have committed crimes or were victims of crime. (grant) as we've laid out... joseph deangelo is likely facing the rest of his life behind bars. but as kron four's philippe djegal reports... due to the statute of limitations on rape and sex crimes in california... deangelo may only serve that time because of the murders and not the rapes. (catherine) we're learning more about a mobile home fire in san jose yesterday thatleft one man dead.. it turns out he'd gone back into the burning home to look for a little girl...he thought was trapped inside.(grant) kron four's rob fladeboe spoke with their family and brings us up to date now live from the scene. rob? (rob live) i'm here at the summerwinds mobile home park outside what's left of the home where investigators have been on scene all day.

relatives of the victim say he lost his life searching forhis niece, whom he thought was trapped inside. this is a recent photo of 22 year-old minh ho, who was identified by his family as the man who perished on thusday in a fire that destroyed the home he shared with his sister and her family. as he surveyed what's left of that home, ho's brother in law thao doan told me that min had initially escaped the fire and was in the street shouting "save my niece, save my niece." moments later, says ho, his brother in law ran back insidein search of his 9-year old niece, whom he thought was trapped by the flames. thao and his wife chau fought back tears as they told methat min was home alone when the fire broke out and that their daughter had left with her father only a half hourearlier, but min did not know that. firefighters also searched for anyone who might have been trapped only to discover min ho's body just outside the front door of the mobile home, which is a total loss. fire captain mitch matlow.mitch matlow/san jose fire dept "....all mobile home fires tend to burn very quickly because of the type of construction, if we can keep to a single home we consider that a success because virtually any fire in a mobile home is going to destroy that home, it's a question of

this is a bigger deal that i thought it was going to be, i'm teary and i didn't think i was going to be i thought i was fine.(catherine)was fine. (catherine) an emotional homecoming for some of the 280 residents of a concord apartment building - who are being allowed to move back in tonight.. they'd been evacuated for several day because of the fire at a next door construction site... (catherine) the huge fire raced through a 240 unit project early tuesday morning.. that building under construction - is now being at least partly demolished since it was so badly damaged. kron4's maureen kelly has the

latest on the investigation... a platoon of investigators from multi agencies including the atf national response team are working narrowing down the origin and cause of the fire that turned the project known as reniassance two in a heap of charred wood and debris.. just some of the 65 investigaors are here digging thru the rubble looking for clues. they are being helped by acclerant detection cannines from san diego and the la fire department. others are fanning out questioning contractors and subcontractors about wheter or not welding was going on inside.....they are also looking for any eyewitnesses.....and are searching for any surveillance cameras looking for suspicious activity or signs of when and where the fire first broke out. they are still working to determine whether it's an accident....or arson. at this

point in time we cannot associate is fire with any other fires were definitely treat it as independent and we need to gather more facts and information and fully investigate the firebecause the fire left the building's structure compromised....i nvestigators were only able to get in to start digging thru the rubble thursday.even as late as this morning fire crews were still shooting down water to put out hot spots. and crews continue to tear down those parts of the building that remain unsafe. and the roads on either side of the structure remain closed down until the compromised portions of the buidling have been demolished. we're working with the structural engineer to determine which part of the structure must be made stable by demolishing them so we're bringing down the upper floors to a point where they're secure from for the collapse an arson investigator tells me because of the sheer size of this scene they will be digging out here for several days at the very least...the special agent in charge of the atf says it could take weeks before this investgation is wrapped up.maureen kelly kron4 news. are looking for a teenager who they say broke into an elderly man's home... and stabbed him. it happened in the middle of the day yesterday on dartmouth street-- in the city's portola neighborhood. police say the 17-year-old suspect got into the home and started fighting with a 76-year-old man. the man and teen know each other. the teen is accused of stabbing the man and running away. police do not have a detailed description of the suspect. (catherine) coming up... the golden state killer makes his first court appearance today. we'll talk live in studio with san francisco public defender jeff adachi about the trial moving forward. the end of a police chase on i-80 near sacramento. this was in rocklin last night --- you can see officers ordering people out of that silver s-u- v with weapons drawn. it's not clear what started this...but several people were taken into custody. more children are being diagnosed with autism. new numbers from the c-d-c show that one in 59 children has been diagnosed. that's a 15-percent increase from just two years ago-- and a 150-percent jump from 18 years ago. the new data also says more cases involve boys... as to the overall hike -- a possible factor - more minorities are being identified with the disorder. poisoning outbreak linked to romaine lettuce has spread to more states. health officials announced today they now have reports of 98 cases in 22 states. the outbreak is blamed on e. coli bacteria in romaine lettuce grown in yuma, arizona. the c-d-c says the bacteria strain behind the outbreak tends to cause more serious illnesses. forty-six people have been hospitalized, including 10 with kidney failure. no deaths are reported. (grant) health officials say people shouldn't eat romaine lettuce unless they know it's not from yuma. every winter that region provides most of the romaine sold in the u-s. kim hutcherson has details on what you can do to avoid getting sick. e. coli bacteria is all around us -- even inside of us.but certain strains produce a toxin that can cause diarrhea, urinary tract infections,

a drug sales investigation leads to the arrest of a gang member--- for child porn. the arrest happened in santa rosa at an apartment building just off of west 3rd street. police say they found 19-year-old miguel jasso sitting in a car- - with a 15-year-old girl. officers searched jasso's car-- and found a gun with ammunition. police also found suspected child pornography on his phone. jasso was arrested and is now facing several charges. the 15-year-old girl was arrested for outstanding felony warrants. .. (grant) the smart train could extend its service to windsor. the sonoma-marin area rail transit district received 21-million dollars to expand the passenger train service from santa rosa to windsor. but officials say they need 40-million dollars to make it happen. there is a measure on the june 5th ballot that could help get the money for the extension. regional measure three would increase tolls on bay area bridges... to generate money for public transportation, highway improvements, and pedestrian

and bike pathways. smart train officials are hoping to get some of that money to pay for the three-mile extension to windsor. (catherine) in the east bay... three teenagers have been arrested after a crime spree in san leandro. police say the 17-year-olds were taken into custody at the greenhouse marketplace shopping center last week. they're accused of several strong-armed robberies and burglaries. police say they saw one of the suspects breaking into a parked car. and say they found stolen property in their possession. director, gary radnich joins us to tell us about curry's status for game one (gary) steph curry was a full steph curry was a full participant in practice for the second straight day. he remains questionable for game one against new orleans. curry participated on a five-on-five scrimmage behind a curtain. head coach, steve kerr says he wants to see how his body responds overnight. golden state won't make a decision on curry's status for game one until after shootaround tomorrow. if the warriors decide to play it safe, curry will play in game two off the bench and with a minute-restriction.

steph's durability this season has been a big issue... he suffered three ankle sprains and knee injury curry understands he needs to be 100-percent in order to have an impact orleans "i'm getting there for sure. like i said i've done a lot ... the last two weeks especially ... on my feet moving ... getting back to movements that i expect to do in a game ... and try to build that tolerance and intensity for what that means. so my knee feels pretty good. don't have any pain doing things i've been doing. when i'm back out there i'll be able to look myself in the mirror and ... everybody that's a part of that decision ... we all can agree its time to go." was not there. thank you for joining us, i'm pam moore. the four -year old girl the man was searching for... was not injured in the fire... but she now has no home to return to. kron4's rob fladeboe has more. this is a recent photo of 22 year-old minh ho, who was identified by his family as the man who perished on thusday in a fire that destroyed the home he shared with his sister and her family. as he surveyed what's left of that home, ho's brother in law thao doan told me that min had initially escaped the fire and was in the street shouting "save my niece, save my niece." moments later, says ho, his brother in law ran back insidein search of his 9-year old niece, whom he thought was trapped by the flames. thao and his wife chau fought back tears as they told methat min was home alone when the fire broke out and that their daughter had left with her father only a half hourearlier, but min did not know that. firefighters also searched for anyone who might have been trapped only to discover min ho's body just outside the front door of the

(pam) in the east bay... after three days of being forced out by fire.... nearly 300 residents of a concord apartment building are being allowed back home. the fire gutted a neighboring construction project.... and caused concerns about the structural integrity of the building's shell. kron4's maureen kelly talked with those coming home tonight. a platoon of investigators from multi agencies including the atf national response team are working narrowing down the origin and cause of the fire that turned the project known as reniassance two in a heap of charred wood and debris.. just some of the 65 investigaors are here digging thru the rubble looking for clues. they are being helped by acclerant detection cannines from san diego and

the la fire department. others are fanning out questioning contractors and subcontractors about wheter or not welding was going on inside.....they are also looking for any eyewitnesses.....and are searching for any surveillance cameras looking for suspicious activity or signs of when and where the fire first broke out. they are still working to determine whether it's an accident....or arson. at this point in time we cannot associate is fire with any other fires were definitely treat it as independent and we need to gather more facts and information and fully investigate the firebecause the fire left the building's structure compromised....i nvestigators were only able to get in to start digging thru the rubble thursday.even as late as this morning fire crews were still shooting down water to put out hot spots. and crews continue to tear down those parts of the building that remain unsafe. and the roads on either side of the structure remain closed down until the compromised portions of the buidling have been demolished. we're working with the engineer to determine which part of the structure must be made stable by demolishing them down the upper floors to a point secure from for the collapse investigator tells me because of the sheer size of this scene they will be digging out here for several days at the very least...the special agent in charge of the atf says it could take weeks before this investgation is wrapped up. maureen kelly kron4 news. (pam) santa cruz police have arrested a man they say attacked a woman in broad daylight -- then stripping down, before turning on police --- and attacking them. reporter phil gomez has more. police on arrested a man in santa cruz in connection with an attempted sexual assault wednesday. daisuke muro, 40, was arrested on suspicion of attempted sexual assault and attacking a police officer, according to police. on wednesday around 7 p.m., officers responded to the area of water and knight streets and learned a woman had been walking when a man came up and grabbed her, police said. during the ensuing struggle, the man pulled the victim to the ground, began to rip her clothes and attempted to pull her pants off, police said.

car accident near chico. take a look at this ... the mother and her goslings ... strolling down highway- 99 yesterday morning. it was not long before cars began trying to avoid hitting them ... which ultimately led to a five car crash in the middle of the road. (pam) fire officials say, no one was seriously hurt ... and neither were the birds. one driver eventually helped the geese safely get off the highway. (pam) luckily in san jose -- this family of geese crossed the street without incident. this was reported on winchester boulevard near san tomas. it's springtime -- and that means birds are having babies. however the young goslings can't fly yet. so two adult geese and their young actually used the crosswalks to cross the street.
