(rob live) i'm here at police headquarters where we just learned some new, fairly startling details about what is being described as a very well coordinated string of violent crimes. lates take a look at the numbers: 16 arrests, 5 adults and 11 juveniles. they allegedly committed 7 robberies, 6 car jackings, 10 burglaries and one assault with a deadly weapon. these are the mug

shots of the five adults who are now in the county jail. the others are in juvinile hall. they were hauled in after police executed search warrants late last week. it turns out this crew is related to another crew taken dowen back i n january. in that case 12 arrests were made, seven adults and 5 juveniles.. what's new here is thatthese people have gang ties, say police but there not operating like a traditional gang. i askled lt. paul joseph to explain. in other words, gangs often make ware on each other. in this case, they are making war on the public at large. lt. joseph describes a scenario where they would commit a car jacking and then drive down the street and rob someone at gunpoint. in one case the getaway car was driven by an 11 year old.more arrests are expected as the investigation continues.

new tactic to keep their station elevators from being used as public toliets. they've hired attendents to man four elevators at the two stations where the problem is the worst....civic center and powell street. it's a six month pilot project that is costing 600-thousand dollars.... a costly solution to a very smelly predictament. kron4's maureen kelly talked to those who rely on those elevators.... who say it's worth it. here's one of the smiling faces bart riders getting on board the elevators at civic center and powell street station will be seeing. granted it's her first day on the job but tawanna haines says she's getting lots of positive feedback on her new roles as an elevator attendent. i've had a ton of mother say i have to feel so much better been having someone in the elevator with me it's not just about having making riders who rely on the elevators, like parents with strollers, feel safer....the presence of these 35 new employees is expected to deter people from coming in here...to use drugs.....or use them as a toliet. so they will stay cleaner...and not break down as ofteneveryone who rides these elevators has a story....that doesn't end well. seen poop i'm not sure of his dog poop is probably

human but yeah that's the worst the urine in the feces being wet and actually sometimes i hold my breath when i go in and out it's unsightly roland wang is on accessibity advisory committees for both muni and bart. he hopes this 6 month pilot project gets expanded....to other stations he's seen similar problems like oakland's colesium station and downtown berkeley. but just staffing the two stations from open to close every day for six months is costing 600-thousand. the project manager for the elevator attendent program says it's in their proposed 2019 budget to extend the pilot program another six months ...as to rolling to other locations.... obviously around budgeting it's always a trade-off if we spend more money on and elevator attendance it mean something else we don't do so we have to have those tough conversations part of the attendent jobs it to track if the elevator usage increases while they are along for the ride.maureen kelly kron4 news

(grant) new tonight at 5... the domestic violence case involving 49ers star reuben foster continues even though the woman he is accused of dragging and punching.. has changed her story...now saying she initially lied to police. foster appeared in court today....as santa clara county prosecutors have asked for more time to look at new evidence submitted by the attorney representing foster's ex-girlfriend. that evidence is a video of a fight that the defense says proves that foster did not hurt her. the video reprotedly shows fster's ex-girlfriend fighting with another woman. foster is scheduled to return to court next week. state killer, is now being looked at as a suspect in yet another murder case ... one where an innocent man spent nearly 40 years in prison. on november 11th 1978. police found the bodies of rhonda wicht and her four year old son donald in her simi valley apartment. by the end of the day, they had a suspect in custody. sfxthirty=one=year=old craig coley was arrested after he called police to learn more details about the murders.he was rhonda wicht's ex=boyfriend.prosecutors say he beat, raped and strangled the 24=year=old waitress and smothered her son in his sleep. his first trial ended in a hung jury.in 1980 he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole. sfxfor decades, coley was a model prisoner, all the time maintaining his innocence.he found an unlikely ally in a simi valley police detective, mike bender.bender became convinced that coley had been wrongly convicted.d=n=a evidence had been collected at

the crime scene but a judge ordered it destroyed.bender was able to track down a small sample at a northern california laboratory.it was not coley's.and last thanksgiving, coley was released with a pardon from governor jerry brown.he currently lives with bender and his family.simi valley police now want to know if joseph deangelo might be their killer.the crime fits the m=o of the golden state killer ... rape, strangulation, murder. the timeline, howver, does not fit.in november of 1978, the golden state killer was preying on bay area victims... nine rapes along the interstate 680 corridor, including one in san jose just days before the simi valley murders. two years went by before the killer first struck in southern california.. (catherine) in february, the state victim compensation board voted to award coley two million dollars ... about 140 dollars for each of his days of wrongful incarceration.

the money still has to be approved by the legislature. (grant) in the east bay... a sideshow crackdown. several police departments worked together over the weekend to stop a huge sideshow from happening saturday in antioch. police there got help from the c-h-p, pittsburg, oakley, and brentwood officers...to stop the show. several drivers showed up and were stopped for vehicle code violations, d-u- i, outstanding warrants, and reckless driving. in total-- 42 citations were issued, 4 cars were impounded, and 5 people were arrested. (grant) also in the east bay... several cars are towed after a sideshow in oakland yesterday. this is a picture from police as the cars are being towed way. police say they received several calls of sideshows happening throughout the city. police have not said if anyone was arrested. near alamo this morning. kron 4's will tran reports. people in the danville alamo area not getting a break as they got another earthquake. yesterday in danville 7 in the span of a couple of hours and then this morning a quake hit alamo that got some people jumping out of bed(i was asleep and the quake hit and my daughter was sleeping with me so i jumped on top of her and being a teacher i yelled for everyone in the house to get under a table)(i was up at the time. felt a good jolt and it felt like the house got punched)(i was up working and it felt like a rumble and it was pretty good. ) (reporter-did it feel like a wave or a back and forth motion because a man we spoke to earlier said it felt like a punch)(no, it felt like a punch. not a wave)will tran-the question is are all these quakes a pre cursor to something much bigger? no one really knows. in alamo will tran kron 4 news

5 it's a crisis that affects just about everyone... a nursing shortage is sweeping the state - and the country.

recent reports show the demand for nurses is quickly outpacing the supply of new graduates. kron four's terisa estacio has more - including how one university is trying to help. (terisa estacio - reporting) here at dominican university in the north bay the dean of health and natural sciences is well aware of the incredible need for highly qualified nurses dr. ruth ramsey was once a nurse herself and knows the stresses and demands of the job that is one of the driving forces of overseeing a top notch program here at domincian - a private university nestled in san rafael. the school currently graduates at least 100 nurses an academic year. it is a rigourous program, and that is a part of the problem concerning dramaticaly increasing the number of nurses in general it takes time for students to go through clinical tours, and challenging course work in hard sciences. dr. ramsey adds, coupled with an aging demographic in this country, it is dynamic situation that doesn't have an overnight cure. dr. ruth ramsey, dean school of health and natural sciences, dominican university. we are looking to expand, but it is difficult to get qualified teachers. (continue vo) there are currently three million nurses in the us - the country will need to produce more than one million new registered nurses by 2022 to fulfill its health care needs according to the american nurses assocation. a spokesperson with the california nurses assocation adds, schools also have a tough time getting qualified teachers, because many would have to take a large pay cut to leave nursing and join

border with mexico to meet with customs and border protection employees...as a caravan of migrants seeks entry after a month long trek toward the u.s. karin caifa reports. for some it's been a month- long, nearly three thousand mile journey, from countries like el salvador and honduras. the hope -- entry into the united states.mos (translated): we know that trump has to open his heart, his good side. we're coming with plans to work. we're not coming to be a burden to the country. now, dozens of migrants on the mexican side of the san ysidro port of entry say they'll stay as long as it takes for their chance to meet with u.s. officials to request asylum -- a legal, but not guaranteed way to be granted entry to the united states.but a u.s. customs and border protection spokesman said they do not yet have the capacity to process their claims.this year's caravan getting more attention than before because of president trump's repeated criticism, president donald trump: it's a horrible, dangerous journey for them, for them and they come up because they know once they get here they can walk right into our countryand his plans to build a border wall.

our weather... with chief meteorologist lawrence karnow. lawrence karnow: the winds kicked up a bit today with sunshine and a few high clouds. there were also a few showers picked up on doppler radar this afternoon. those showers are widely scattrered and should end once the sun sets. high pressure is now waiting to build off the coast. temperatures will begin to warm as early as tomorrow with some highs in the upper 70s with cooler 60s at the coast. sunny and warm weather will continue through midweek with some highs getting near 80s inland. cooler weather and a few more clouds will return next weekend.

for your money tonight... gas prices continue to get more expensive... and drivers could be paying more at the pump this summer than they have in years. right now-- gas prices have climbed above 3-dollars-and-50-cents in every major city in california. crude oil prices are at the highest levels in more than three years-- and it's expected to get even more expensive. one reason gas prices are so high in the state-- the gas tax in california is among the highest in the nation... at 46- cents a gallon. = here's a look at bay area gas prices right now... in oakland and san jose it's $3.63 for a gallon of regular. and san francisco is the most expensive in the nation... at $3.73.

(catherine) t-mobile and sprint are agreeing to merge....as america's national wireless carriers shrink from four to three... although it's not a done deal.the combination - worth more than 26-billion dollars - still needsregulatory approval. even then - it probably wouldn't finalize until early next year. meantime, the companies are talking up the dealas great for high-speed wireless investments, rural serviceand u.s. competitiveness.. there's concern that a merger could mean an end to an era of aggressive competition for customers. and the customers.

(catherine) tonight at 5:30... kron 4 is always tracking local stories. here's a look at what's happening in your neighborhood right now. (grant) starting in the east bay... police in berkeley are looking for this man... as he is believed to be connected to an armed robbery. they say a female cal student fought him off as he tried to rob her on saturday morning. the attack happened at college avenue and channing way. the woman says the robber had a gun. the suspect is believed to be in his 20's and about 5 foot 8 inches tall. police are telling people to stay in groups when walking around.

(grant) police are investigating a deadly shooting in albany after a man was found shot and hunched over a park bench yesterday. police found him on masonic avenue near the ohlone greenway. the victim was taken to a hospital where he died. his name has not been released. police are still looking for the gunman tonight... and so far don't have any leads. (catherine) to the north bay-- firefighters believe a space heater sparked a house fire in santa rosa early this morning. the battalion chief says the heater was left in an office on meadow ridge drive. the fire destroyed the garage, two cars, and half a kitchen... causing 400- thousand dollars in damage. firefighters arrived around one in the morning and were able to contain the fire within 30 minutes. (catherine) police are searching for a man who robbed a shell gas station in santa rosa. this is surveillance video of the thief leaving the store last night. police say the man brandished a weapon at the clerk... and demanded money.

the thief then got into a red car that was waiting outside. officers searched for the man and car but couldn't find them.. (grant) on the peninsula... four people are rescued from the water in pacifica after their boat ran aground. the group was on its way to san diego over the weekend when the boat started having engine problems. strong currents ended up pushing the sailboat to linda mar beach. all 4 passengers were rescued... including a woman who is 7-months pregnant. the boat captain says she plans to have the boat fixed... and then continue continue the journey to san diego. (grant) the peninsula humane society and s-p-c-a in burlingame is waiving adoption fees for bunnies. starting tomorrow-- you can apply to adopt a rabbit for free. this is a picture of snoop-- one of the rabbits up for adoption. the shelter says they are perfect pets for people who live in small homes. but-- they add that even though the adoption fee is waved, there is a strict application process to make sure the rabbits to to safe homes. lawrence karnow: the winds

star stormy daniels is suing president trump for defamation. the lawsuit was filed in new york today. she claims she had an affair with the president in 2006 and that she was threatened by a man in 2011 to keep quiet. earlier this month on twitter, trump called a sketch of the man "a total con job" and said he was "non existent." daniels' attorney calls the president's statements "irresponsible and defamatory." the white house is denying the affair between daniels and trump. (pam) another big story tonight.it is a crisis that affects just about everyone... a nursing shortage is sweeping the state - and the country. recent reports show, the demand for nurses is quickly outpacing the supply of new graduates. kron four's terisa estacio has more - including how one university is trying to help. (estacio reporting) dr. ruth ramsey. we are looking at a shortage for many different reasons. dr. ruth ramsey is the dean of the health and natural sciences at dominican university a private college in the north bay. dr. ruth ramsey. by 2020, the numbers will be down by 20 percent, nurses retiring and more elderly people needing care. dr. ramsey says dominican has about 100 graduates a year in their nursing program. she talked with me about how they are trying to get more students in and equip them with the skills they need for the very challenging career. she adds, it is a complicated and dynamic issue. nursing is a rigorous undergraduate program - with demanding coursework. there are nearly 3 million nurses in the us. the country will need to produce more than one million

jose sharks are back at the sap center tonight... after a heated game two in las vegas.... the double overtime victory is providing some momentum for the sharks in a tough playoff series... the sharks were without evander kane last game... but he's back tonight... kane is returning from a one game suspension for cross checking in game 1 of this series... but, head coach pete deboer says they know the depth this team has because they played 80 percent of their games this season before evander kane was acquired by the team... but they can't deny the sharks are much better with kane on the ice... the sharks get one winger back on that first line... but lose another tonight.. deboer confirmed this morning that joonas donskoi... is out tonight with a lower body injury.. he says it's not too serious, but they will have to adjust without donskoi.. chris tierney will go with that first line in his absence.... we spoke to evander kane today...he say's it was pretty hard watching his team battle in game 2 from the press box.(sot) < evander kane: " i haven't been that nervous in a long long time. definitely more nervous watching than playing. so i'm happy to be back on the bench. the momentum from the
