(pam) prosecutors want to collect d-n-a, fingerprints, and even naked photographs of the suspect..... and today, a judge in sacramento ruled they can proceed... no cameras were allowed in court ... but the scene was similar to last week ... the 72-year-old former police officer was brought in,

handcuffed, in a wheelchair . this time .. he said nothing during the court appearance. his public defender argued, prosecutors were effectively asking her client to incriminate himself. this is her leaving the courthouse.... but a judge sided with prosecutors ... pointing out, that courts have repeatedly upheld the collection of such evidence. this is the deputy district attorney, just after the hearing.. he declined to comment today ... legal experts say, the prosecution might also try to use the body photographs to compare against clues ... from the attacks.. joseph james deangelo is suspected in as many as 12 murders and 50 rapes ...in the 1970's and 1980's. he is due back in court may 14th. back to you in the studio. (grant) it was dna and an ancestry website that sacramento law enforcement says helped them zero in on the golden state killer. now the vallejo police department is hoping the same method can crack another high

profile unsolved mystery: the zodiac killer case.(grant) kron4's maureen kelly talked with the sister of his first victim who says even 50 years later, she's hoping for closure. i'm glad to hear that they're investigating, yes i didn't even think they had any dna that's the voice of melodie long, who's 16 year old sister betty lou jenkins was murdered along with her boyfriend david faraday in 1968 while parked on a road in benecia....they were the zodiac killer's first victims. she was a good kid i mean she was murdered on her first date. that tells you how innocent she was it's one of the bay area's most famous unsolved cases. he attacked seven people total....killing five. but claimed responsibility for more in taunting letters and cryptograms sent to local newspapers.now a vallejo detective says he's submitted two envelopes containing those letters for dna analysis. the goal: to get a genetic profile in order to narrow in on the killer using his family tree. it was that innovative methodology that resulted in the arrest joseph deangelo, the man police say is the

golden state killer and the east area rapist. i've always said that the zodiac was one of the first terrorist in a way that he was able to manipulate the media into generating fear if in the public which he did very effectively with his letters and his codes and his tolerance duffy jennings helped cover the zodiac killer story while working the san francisco chronicle. i was thought that if they caught or found zodiac at this time 50 years after his first killings that would either be through some advances in dna that didn't exist before or he would leave behind some trace of himself or some evidence that would enable people to identify who he was but eat neither of those things have happened yet but now with this development there's a chance to solve this decades old mystery....and a chance for people like betty lou jenkins sister to know the truth. my parents are both gone now i know they would've like some closure along time ago results from the dna analysis is expected back in the next few weeks.maureen kelly kron4 news

(vicki) the zodiac killer case remains one of the most notoriousand troubling crime mysteries involving the bay area...(grant) catherine heenan is here with background information on a case that in may ways - lives on. (catherine) despite years of investigation - stacks of documentation - the identity of the zodiac was never confirmed.. and what we 'do' know still evokes the memories of fear and confusion reporter asking napa sheriff "well sheriff, what type of person is this man? well - we have reason to believe he is a maniac. however, he is a cunning man. he knows just exactly what moves he's going to make."from 1970 - a frustrated napa sheriff..just one of the many law enforcement officials admitting the zodiac killer was still on the loose.he was a serial killer who operated in northern california from at least the late 1960's to the

early 70's. the zodiac claimed 37 murders.investigators agree on only seven confirmed victims.including two high school students on a first date...shot and killed in 1968 in benicia.the 17-year-old boy had borrowed his mother's rambler for the night..and parked near lake herman road. police think the killer ordered them out of the car....then began firing."the boy was shot right at the side of the car. the girl apparently tried to run. she was found shot 28 feet on." there were also attacks in vallejo, napa county and san francisco.the zodiac sent a series of letters to the local bay area press....taunting those who couldn't catch him. often including cryptograms - most of which were never definitively solved.in the end...the letters didn't really help."can you honestly say now that this latest letter is of any help at all? no, i don't see many clues in there. he basically acknowledges that he's still free."through the years a string of possible suspects has been discussed and debated. no one was ever charged with the crimes.

(grant) some fremont parents are getting what they want... sex education will ánot be taught to fourth graders after all. in a meeting that went until 2:30 this morning... the fremont unified school board finally decided to scrap its original plan to teach sex ed to 4th, 5th and 6th graders. instead, it will be taught starting in 7th grade. during the 10-hour long meeting, hundreds of parents spoke out saying the curriculum was inappropriate

for elementary students. if parents of students in 7th through 9th grade still don't want their children taught sex ed-- the board also approved an email opt-out option.. and they will received alternative education. (vicki) electric scooters continue to ruffle the feathers of pedestrians and others in san francisco... leading to a crackdown and calls for more regulation. and it turns out those scooters have also invaded downtown san jose. kron four's rob fladeboe joins us now live with a look at how the scooters are going over there. rob? i'm here at san jose state in downtown san jose where the scooters are extremely popular. so far, complaints are few. but the city is nonethelessin the process of formulating a scooter policy. introduced here in downtown san jose little more than a month ago electric scooters now seem to be everywhere. so far, two companies, lime and bird, are renting scooters here. san jose police say they have received just one complaint so far but city hall

is watching says the department oftransportation's colin heyne.colin heyne/city of san jose ".....we've had a lot of curiosity about the scooters, we've seen scooters left blocking the public right of way and there are questions about safety..." through a smart phone app, users can check out a scooter from several location, use it for a short scoot around town, and then leave for the next user to find. for now, the city is deferring to state law, which says riders must have a driver's license, wear a helmet and stay off the sidewalk. obviously, that's not happening. "...the city council has asked the d.o.t. to develop some regulations and a permit proces so we are going to be reaching out to the public to find out what people like about the program, what they don't like and what they would like to see changed..." they're not unlike bicycles in many ways but scooter riders may be lessexperienced, less prepared to deal with heavy traffic on and off the street and are clearly a hazard on crowded city sidewalks. despite their more or less unannounced arrival, the scooters may be here to stay but the city is about to put on the brakes.colin heyne/dept of transportation "....it's going to happen, but we want

how many twitter users whose passwords may have been exposed. the company isn't calling this a hack or a security breach. but as kron four's philippe djegal reports... users are being asked to change their passwords -- just in case. (philippe) twitter says there is no evidence that the passwords of its 336 million users have been leaked or misused. but that for a period of time -- the passwords were insecure... connie guglielmo/cnet- "they stored all of those passwords. your password, my password, everyone who uses twitter, in a plain text file, instead of encrypting it. now, what does that mean? that means anybody internally at twitter could have seen your username and you password. not good when it's plain text." twitter says it discovered a bug that prevented the passwords from being encrypted. connie guglielmo (goo-yell-mo) is the editor-in-chief of cnet news in san francisco.connie

sheriff's office received several reports of construction sites being burglarized. at least five burglaries in three locations happened between last night and this morning. police say several tools were stolen from storage trailers at the sites. they say the trailers were locked... and some were even blocked by heavy equipment. the sheriff's department will now have extra patrols in all construction areas in the burn zones. (vicki) and a family will soon be moving back home... more than 7 months after last year's deadly firestorm. brian bushon and his family were forced to move out of their coffey park home because of a wildfire in santa rosa. right now... builders are currently working on over 50 new homes in the neighborhood. all day long... you can see and hear the work being done on the neighborhood. the bushon's home is expected to be ready by the fall. world's most active. since monday....hundreds of small earthquakes have shaken the eastern side of hawaii's big island. the latest was a 4-point-six this afternoon. officials say residents should make or review their emergency plans in case of an evacuation order. (grant) the investigation into what caused the crash of that puerto rico air national guard w-c-130 plane yesterday onto a georgia highway is underway. steve nannes has this report. it happened moments after takeoffjames lavine / witness to crash: "it was like a big explosion. it shook me up, it shook my car."now officials are working hard to figure out what caused a puerto rico air national guard wc-130 cargo plane to nosedive into a georgia, highway wednesday. col. pete boone / air national guard: "an investigation is currently in progress to determine the cause of this tragic event and ways to prevent such occurrences from happening in the future."all nine crew members on board were killed -- all from puerto rico -- and most with decades of service.col. pete boone / air national guard: "we have confirmed that nine airmen from the puerto rico air national guard were aboard the aircraft and have deceased." the governor of puerto rico has declared a state of mourning following wednesday's incident. nine days, one day for each the crew members lost in the crash.all this as

breaking news tonight... two people have been shot in mill valley-- and the gunman is still on the loose tonight. the shooting happened at around 3:30 this afternoon on east blithedale avenue-- just west of highway 101. when officers arrived at the scene-- they found a man and a woman had been shot. they were taken to the hospital and their condition is not known right now. the man police are looking for in connection to the shooting is described as 80-years-old and hispanic or filipino.... in a white shirt - five foot five. he is considered armed and dangerous... police do believe is he contained within their perimiter.. we will have a live update on kron4 news at six. (grant) starting in the east bay... where police say they arrested a man for peeping into a woman's window.

24-year-old daniel ramos-mora is accused of peeking into a woman's window-- and touching himself. it happened in berkeley early tuesday morning. police say the man is a transient in the area. he was booked into jail on suspicion of lewd conduct... and a probation violation. ... (vicki) in the north bay... a former marin county coroner will spend 1 year in jail for sexually abusing his own daughter. darrell harris must also register as a sex offender... and stay away from his daughter for 10 years. harris pleaded guilty to one felony charge back in january... after making a deal with prosecutors. the judge called the deal completely inadequate. but she agreed to it after the daughter wrote her a letter... saying she wanted the case to end and she did not want to testify at trial (vicki) police are investigating a brutal home invasion in santa rosa that happened near an elementary school. the victims were tied up and their pot was taken. it happened yesterday morning on primrose court. the victims told police that one intruder came through the front door... while another man came through the back. there have been

around half a dozen cases like this since february grow permits are legal in sonoma county... but police say it doesn't look like the homeowners had one. (grant) on the peninsula. the coast guard is working to salvage a 33- foot sailboat that sank...when crews tried to tow it off the beach. the boat washed ashore in pacifica last weekend... after it ran out of fuel. four people and a dog were on board...the victims were all treated for minor injuries. salvage workers attempted to tow it from the beach yesterday... but the boat took on water and sank about 600 feet offshore. two workers suffered some bruises...but no broken bones. at last check the sailboat is around 10 feet underwater...f ortunately no hazardous materials or fuel were on board.

(vicki) more children are being diagnosed with autism. the most recent from the c-d-c show that one in 59 children has been diagnosed. that's a 15-percent increase from just two years ago-- and a 150-percent jump from 18 years ago. but tonight-- we are learning about a major breakthrough in detecting autism. joining me now is u-s-f professor dr. bill bosl. and bill-- you recently found a way that could predict autism in kids as young as three months old?

a new study in the journal scientific reports shows that nonlinear analysis of eegs, an inexpensive and noninvasive mode of measuring brain electrical activity, can not only predict or rule out autism spectrum disorder (asd) in infants as young as three months old, but also predict the severity of the outcome. current standard diagnoses are not reliable before two years of age and are often not done until 4 years or later.led by university of san francisco (usf) associate professor of health informatics and clinical psychology william bosl, phd, together with colleagues at harvard medical school and boston children's hospital, where dr. bosl holds visiting faculty appointments, the study predicted occurrences of asd in infants with greater than 95% accuracy by analyzing eeg (electroencephalogram) signals with nonlinear physics and

(pam) another big story we are following. earlier today, a sacramento county judge dismissed a motion by the defense team of the suspected east area rapist.... aka the "golden state killer" - joseph james deangelo. reporter reporter pedro rivera tells us what this means for the prosecution. (take pkg) this is footage from joseph james deangelo's court appearance last friday. cameras and audio weren't allowed inside judge michael sweet's courtroom thursday morning. deangelo was silent as he learned investigators will now be able to take dna, fingerprints and photographs of the 72 year old's body.the motion revolved around a

sealed search warrant. on wednesday, judge sweet postponed the decision on the motion to give a proper review. according to the sacramento bee, the sheriffs department was going to gather those items yesterday afternoon but it could not happen until the judge made his ruling.we caught up to defense attorney dianne howard outside the courtroom to see if she had a comment about the ruling.district attorney thien ho would not comment on when investigators plan on collecting dna or photographs from deangelo.deangelo is currently facing two murder charges for the slaying of brian and katie maggiore in 1978. in total, the east area rapist has been accused of at least 12 murders and raping as many as 45 women in the 1970's and 80's. the workers.. who are helping victims of the north bay wildfires ... rebuild their homes. this morning -- the sonoma county sheriff's office received several reports of construction sites being burglarized. at least five burglaries, in three locations, happened between last night and this morning. police say, several tools were stolen from storage trailers at the sites. they say, the trailers were locked... and some were even blocked by heavy equipment. the sheriff's department will now have extra patrols ... in all construction areas in the burn zones. (pam) in the east bay.. some fremont parents are getting what they want... sex education will ánot be taught to fourth graders afterall. in a meeting that went until 2:30- this morning ... the fremont unified school board finally decided.... to scrap its original plan to teach sex ed to 4th, 5th and 6th graders... and instead will teach the course to 7th, 8th and 9th graders. during the 10- hour long meeting, hundreds of parents spoke out saying, the curriculum was inappropriate for elementary
