they demanding fair and equal wages. kron 4's sara stinson joins us live from the u-c-s-f . sara this will have a big impact on the hospital and it's patients. sara? ((áásara liveáá))marty - this is going to impact hundreds of scheduled surgeries, cancer treatments, you name it...it's going to disrupt the entire u-c-s-f medical center here on parnassus avenue.the strike is planned by the a major union representing university employees ranging from janitors to security guards to nurses.u-c employees from this union and three others in the bay area will be walking out to demand that the university system make wages fair and equal for all genders.these are issues these unions have been discussing for years.plus - employees say they are sick of jobs being outsourced to private contractors.staff at u-c's six medical centers say the current conditions and wages impact the quality of care patients receive.((áásara liveáá))the u-c-s-f emergency

( marty ) we're following breaking news out of san jose. san jose police say a man was shot and killed earlier this morning. officers found his body in the area of story road and jackson avenue. police have not released the name of the victim. anyone with information is asked to call san jose police.

( marty ) thousands of people are still without power and the ground is still rumbling in hawaii. that powerful volcano has destroyed half a dozen homes. 17-hundred people have been forced to evacuate. kim hutcherson has the latest. hawaii's biggest island-- shaken and stirred. timothy trun / leilani resident: "we're about to enjoy dinner, and then the cops show up and tell us we have to go. and everything changed in an instant."days after the most active volcano on the island erupted-- the area is still under threat. fountains of lava and dangerous gas chased hundreds of people out of their homes.new video shows hot lava splattering dangerously close to neighborhoods."all we heard was a boom! within minutes we see smoke. and all this lava coming across the street." people are still facing the threat of more quakes, spewing lava and toxic gas. the "kilauea volcano" erupted thursday-- sending sulfuric acid and molten rocks into the air. on top of that-- a magnitude 6.9 quake hit the area friday-- shaking homes already impacted by the eruption. that quake was the most powerful one on the island since 1975, according to the us geological survey.

"it scared me, it really scared me. first time in my life i ever seen shelves wave back and forth like that." hundreds of smaller quakes have hit the island -- forcing people to stay on high alert. "i feel emotional inside i just feel really displaced like i'm not sure what to do. and i feel pretty alone right now."officials say at least six lava vents have opened... and volcanic activity shows no signs of slowing down. david ige / hawaii governor: "it's unpredictable, we don't know which way the lava is going to flow. we are planning actively for every contingency that we can think of."i'm kim hutcherson reporting. jordan fong is the first girl in san francisco to join boy scouts.the organization says it's working to be more inclusive.so girls like jordan.. who has been with the girls scouts for four years.. are switching over. jordan says.. seeing her older brother take part in the group's activities inspired her. jordan fong/one of first to join scouts bsawhat i saw there was really good archery. and rock-climbing and horse-riding which i really like. and what made me want to do it more was i thought all the activities that i would get to do in boyscouts. because i like to climb new stuff. it gets old and you remember it so much you are ahead of everyone, you want to do something more challenging. lei fong/ scout's mothershe was always kind of tagging along and she was inspired to see you know 700 boys all getting ready for their trek and i remember her saying, whoa i totally want to do that too. jordan's mother says she's proud of her daughter. and is excited for her. lei fong/ scout's mothershe's the one who wants to go on the longest hike, the most rugged, wilderness. and you know, i think, for me, i really like that she's going to learn resilience. i don't know how to really teach that. you know, so i think that's something that she will learn. in san francisco hermela aregawi kron 4 news.

mental health awareness month. it aims to focus attention on the need for screening and treatment. a new study says 87 percent of

americans agree on more mental health support for children and teenagers. the c-d-c says over 20-percent of children have had a seriously mental disorder. the national institute of health reports there were about 45 million adults living with a mental illness in 2016. of those, almost 10 and a half million were considered serious mental illnesses. ( marty )in fresno... health officials there say a number of people may have been exposed to a case of the measles. someone infected with the disease showed up at a hospital emergency room in clovis, near fresno. doctors say the person was infected out of the state and symptoms developed when they returned. those at the hospital and the ugent care center are reaching out to those who may have come in contact with the infected person. measle symptoms include fever, cough, and rashes. ( marty ) a driver apparently stepped on the gas instead of the break pedal...and crashed into a donut shop in the south bay. one person was injured. kron 4's gayle ong reports from milpitas with how that victim is doing. and shows us the damage to the donut store. this is the aftermath -- milpitas fire fighters responded to a vehicle into a building saturday afternoon that sent a man to the trauma center.the driver crashed into a donut shop just as a man was coming through.. ngocthao pham owns the salon at the same shopping strip..

she says it's not the first time a car hit the donut shop.. authorities helped the owners clean up the mess there were minimal structural damage.. the donut shop was business as usual - customers were in and out of the shop picking up fresh donuts.milpitas fire chief says the victim is in stable condition with non life threathening injurieshe says the driver was okay -- and all parties involved are very lucky in milpitas, gayle ong, kron 4 news. nick egan remembers the day in late august of 2016, when he saw paul dwayne kilgore in a hot tub with two young boys having a sexually graphic conversation about their private partssot my intuition felt that something was off about what was happeningat the healdsburg parkpoint health club, his gut told him to follow kilgore and the boys aged 11 and 12, who were now naked to the locker room. where he witnessed kilfoge brush his hand against a boys thigh. it did not feel right, so he told the front desk, and then called police.sot if it hadn't lined that i was in the exact spot in that exact time how long he would have gone on unpunished and the lives that would have been impactedegan's call to police prompted an investigation.and later to the now 70 year old man's arrest. then a guilty verdict and his sentencing this week to 150 years to life in prison for molesting 6 boys.he may have befriended the children through the sonoma valley boys and girls club where he

over the last two years. last year -- 138 people were killed in 30 separate shooting incidents in the u-s. that compares to 20-16 when there were 20 active shootings that killed 83 people. the fbi defines an active shooter .... as anyone killing or trying to kill people in a populated area-- the data doesn't include information on drug- or gang-related shootings. ( marty )the mass school shooting in parkland, florida, touched a nerve among the students who survived .. and served as a wake up call to the country. and there are two sides - the mass shootings, largely affecting affluent communities, and the urban gun violence affecting young people as well. in part two of her special report... kron 4's pam moore talked with two bay area young women. each one is committed to fighting gun violence... and each aware that their causes are rooted in the same troubling issues facing i feel like it took white kids to be shot by another white kid for people to take notice. as with all stories.. there are differing perspectives

stinson was at the emotional ceremony. it's been early five months since mayor edwin mah lee passed away. ("we continue to miss ed as much as i'm sure you all do.")("you think i miss him, oh i miss him, i miss ed lee.")to honor lee - family, friends and city leaders all gathered together saturday morning to plant a magnolia tree in view of city hall.("ed would have been so pleased knowing you were all here to pay tribute to him.") the perfect way to tribute the man who worked tirelessly to make the city a better place dating back to when he served as the public works director. ("we now have a legacy of infrastructure that will be tied directly to ed lee for future generations.")lee's work ethic is something everyone talks about.("he was the kind of public servant who worked 24/7.")the ceremony brought tears as lee's sister talked about how much this

87-year-old woman fulfilled her lifelong dream. patricia cassity walked the stage at the university of alabama and received her college diploma -- a moment 70 years in the making. her course work...dates all the way back to 1947. in her last quarter... she decided to head to alaska to work for the air force. that's where she met her husband bernard and started a family. so earning her degree wasn't possible...until now.(sot) < "they had to get transcript out of the archive and i thought that will take forever. is it in the attic in a box? or down in the basement?">( marty ) cassity didn't have to take any new classes to earn her degree. she had apparently met all the requirements for a bachelor of science degree -- she just didn't ( marty ) a blockbuster video store in alaska is now becoming a bit of a museum. comedian john oliver offered the store memorabilia from

mental health awareness month. it aims to focus attention on the need for screening and treatment. a new study says 87 percent of

americans agree on more mental health support for children and teenagers. the c-d-c says over 20-percent of children have had a seriously mental disorder. the national institute of health reports there were about 45 million adults living with a mental illness in 2016. of those, almost 10 and a half million were considered serious mental illnesses. ( marty )in fresno... health officials there say a number of people may have been exposed to a case of the measles. someone infected with the disease showed up at a hospital emergency room in clovis, near fresno. doctors say the person was infected out of the state and symptoms developed when they returned. those at the hospital and the ugent care center are reaching out to those who may have come in contact with the infected person. measle symptoms include fever, cough, and rashes. ( marty ) happening tomorrow... workers at five u-c hospitals in the state are walking out . u- c-s-f hospital staff are among those set to begin a three day strike. the demonstration is planned by the a major union representing university employees. workers are demanding that the u-c system make wages fair and equal for all genders. the u-c-s-f emergency room and clinics will remain open during the three day strike. but patients with serious needs are asked to go to affliates of u-c-s-f such as saint mary's. ( marty ) the fbi says there were more active shooter incidents in 2017 than in any other year. the new report examines shootings in the u-s over the last two years. last year -- 138 people were killed in 30 separate shooting

87-year-old woman fulfilled her lifelong dream. patricia cassity walked the stage at the university of alabama and received her college diploma -- a moment 70 years in the making. her

( marty ) an 11-year-old girl makes an amazing discovery in tennesse. she found a 475-million year old fossil. a professor at the university of tennessee comfirmed the find. ryleigh taylor found a trilobite -- an extinct marine arthropod. ryleigh doesn't plan to keep the fossil... she wants it put on display in a museum for others to see. ( marty ) a baby lemur was recently born at san jose's happy hollow park and zoo. now the public is being asked to vote on his name. the yellow-eyed...black and white ruffed lemur was born amonth ago. there are three name choices anyone can vote on. loka...which means "prize"... zandry...or volana...which means "moon". lemurs have been hunted and habitat- deprived almost to extinction.
