huge development in a shocking east bay murder case.. a woman beaten, stabbed, then dumped on the side of the road. tonight - one of the suspects has pleaded guilty - while the other says they are innocent. hello i'm vicki liviakis. (grant) and i'm grant lodes. 19-year-old lizette cuesta was found soaked in blood... fighting for her life.. on tesla road in livermore back in february. police say she identified her two attackers right before she died. kron 4's terisa estacio is live in dublin tonight where... the plea hearing just wrapped up. terisa? (vicki) breaking news..a south san francisco middle school teacher has been arrested.. accused of sex crimes with students.the suspect has been identified as joseph toy - a teacher at westborough middle school. police say he had innappropriate interactions with students during school hours.he has been a teacher at westborough middle school for 13 years. the investigation began in april - after police received a tip -- the school says he was immediately placed on leave. in a court appearance last month. the d-a says that investigators have been hard at work over the past 16 days - since deangelo's arrest in sacramento couny. they took a closer look at the evidence in the homocides andre-interviewed witnesses. santa barbara county d-a - i have decided to file four counts of first degree murder with special circumstances with joseph james deangelo. each of the four counts carry multiple allegations.each carries the potential for life in prison or the death sentence. deangelo is a former police officer...he remains in jail in sacramento where he already faces a string ofmurder charges. prosecutors in santa barbara county join their counterparts in orange, sacramento and ventura counties....in pursuing charges against him. grant? have been found near the spot where an s-u-v plunged off a cliff in mendocino county. today officials said a resident found a pair of jeans-- and human remains in a girl's shoe. they were found on a beach near the location where police say jennifer hart intentionally drove her wife and six adopted children off a cliff back in march. five bodies were found but three of their children were not immediately recovered. (vicki) new at five, a sad commentary on the lack of affordable housing has come to our attention on the peninsula. kron four's rob fladeboe is live in atherton to explain why cops are being allowed to sleep at the police station. rob? (rob live) this is yet another story about how the people who workin comminities like atherton can't afford to live here. in thiscase, it's cops. because commutes and traffic are getting worse all the time, they are being allowed to catch forty winks here at police headquarters before they hit the road.

atheron police commander joe wade showed me the tiny, but cozy "sleeping room" where many an officer has taken a nap after a long shift. it's basically an 8 by ten storage room with a bed and nightstand, along with the department's dry cleanng and drinking water.commander joe wade/atherton police department "....for the most part officers work a 12 hour shift, sometimes if they have court it can be 16 hours and most have long commutes so the department is providing a place where they can crash so to speak so they can get some sleep before they go home..." of the small but dedicated department's 21 sworn officers, not one lives in atherton where the median-priced home is somewhere in the neighborhood of $7 million dollars. as a result officers are commuting two hours or more from places like tracy and gilroy, which can take a toll on anyone. commander joe wade/atherton police ".....we're in a profession where we don't want t omake mistakes and sometimes when you're not on your game because you havn't slept and

you're not alert as you need to be, things can fall through the cracks and we dont want that..."a few officers have left because of all this and recruiting their replacements has been a challenge because working people simply cant afford to live here. the solution, at least for now,is a nap in the department's one-person bunkhouse. (grant) an update now on the massive and unprecedented debris removal process in the north bay. this follows the deadly and destructive wildfires that ravaged that region back in october. today, kron four's philippe djegal spoke with officials leading the disaster-relief efforts and reports from santa rosa. (philippe)chris coursey/mayor- "the debris clean-up has been unprecedented, uh, in the history of california." since the fires sparked in october... federal, state and local agencies have been in the north bay cleaning up. mark ghilarducci/cal oes- "this is a marathon, not a sprint." at a news conference detailing the project... santa rosa mayor chris coursey applauds the effort.chris coursey/mayor- "two million tons of debris has been carted away from the aftermath of the fire." colonel eric mcfadden with the u-s army corps of engineers says that works out to about 314 square miles of land that's been cleared.col. eric mcfadden/us army- "4,272 of the parcels have been cleared tested and we've notified that county that they're ready for rebuilding." and, in some

cases -- the building is already underway. in santa rosa, 117 homes destroyed by the fires are under construction. 85 other homeowners have received their permits to build and, 163 more people are in the process of getting their permits. shirlee zane/supervisor- "we've given many of them a clean slate, in terms of those properties and those foundations upon which they can build. and, not only build new structures, of which will house them and their families, but rebuild memories." fema says not since the 1906 earthquake has there been a debris removal project of this scale in califoria. the debris was hauled to seven different landfills in sonoma, napa, lake and mendecino counties. the combined federal and state costs of the project is about one- point-three billion dollars. in sonoma county, philippe djegal, kron four news. flammable fuel has been moved out of a hawaii geothermal plant that's near the kilauea volcano. all of the fuel was moved to a secure location today. the plant sits on the edge of leilani estates-- one of the areas where nearly two-thousand residents have been forced to evacuate as the volcano spewed lava. scientists say active eruption of lava within the leilani estates remains paused. however, earthquake activity and ground deformation continue. additional outbreaks in the general area are expected. matter - a new report suggests that legalizing and taxing marijuana isn't boosting revenue all that much for 'other' states either.. catherine heenan is here with the latest on what's happening.. (catherine) the bottom line -- legal marijuana 'does' bring in moremoney for state and local governments. but we're not talking huge profits....at least not yet. in california for example - it was expected that the extra tax moneywould add up to roughly 175-million dollars this year. for the first quarter of 2018 - the state has collected 34 million. suggesting the numbers will probably be lower than expected. nationwide - the credit rating agency 'moody's' says that despite high taxes on pot - it accounts for just a small portion of government budgets. in colorado - it's about 2-percent, for instance. industry supporters point out that it's still early - and they have high hopes for long-term numbers. another report predicts that the market for legal cannabis in the u.s. will grow from 16-

(vicki) tonight... one person is recovering from smoke inhaltion and at least seven people are without a home after an apartment fire in san francisco. it happened early this morning on glendale and market streets. that's right near twin peaks. kron 4's sara stinson has the latest on the investigation. ("the fire erupted in the penthouse in this four story apartment complex off of market street in san francisco. not only are those people displaced, but also others who live below due to heavy water damage.")a scary situation as dozens of people who live in this apartment complex rushed out the building to safety.("we panicked and grabbed our two children and ran out the emergency escape."most of the people i spoke with were sleeping when the fire broke out just before two o'clock thursday morning.("they were asleep after talking with fire investigators we learned one person thought there was a burglary after their window shattered they thought someone

made entry.")one person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.firefighters say when they first arrived the entire penthouse of this four story building was a blaze.("crews did a great job it was a large hose job and when they made entry they used several sliding glass windows.")this could have burned down the entire building on glendale street, but firefighters contained the fire to the fourth floor. however there is signifigant water damage to the other units.("we've already deemed the unit 411, which was the top floor fire unit as heavily impacted , they are not allowed back in. then unit 311 has heavy water damage so we just escorted people up to get some items but they aren't going to be able to stay.") is putting a questionable tradition to rest....birthday spankings from the principal. reporter dan haggerty has more. when a kid has a birthday at alvord elementary school, principal bridget williams calls them back to her officer for a birthday spanking.a playful hit for each year and a pinch to "grow on".she sent this letter home last month when two parents complained. willams says she's been doing the spankings for eight years. that if parents don't want their kids spanked --- to put it in writing at the office. and the reaction from parents was overwhelming.martha pippin/grandparent of alvord elementary student: "it's a birthday. it's one, two, three, whatever. and one to grow on. now if they had a

(vicki) starting on the peninsula-- where police have released a sketch of the suspect who they say robbed a teen at gunpoint. this is the man police are looking for. the incident happened saturday night when the 17-year-old was walking near lytton avenue and kipling street in palo alto. police say the teen was talking on his cellphone... when 3 people approached him and demanded the phone. when the teen refused... a gun was pointed at him and he was punched in the face. the man in the sketch is the suspect who police say punched the teen. police do not have descriptions of the other suspects involved. ... report... but school officers say they have not found any evidence to support her claim. she is hoping more students and parents will come forward. (grant) a community group in oakland says the city needs to do more to stop illegal dumping. mayor libby schaaf recently announced a plan to hire three litter enforcement officers to help with the problem, but members of the east oakland congress of neighborhoods say... it isn't enough. the group claims that the city provides better services to high-income neighborhoods than it does for low income areas. the group has offered a list of proposals including a new public works crew that is focused on illegal dumping. they say several city councilmembers have agreed to find the money to meet some of the groups demands. (vicki) in the north bay. two people are behind bars tonight...on suspicion of selling methamphetamine. the arrests happened on the lynch creek trail in petaluma. police responded to complaints by neighbors of people blocking acces to the trail. once at the scene officers found 44-year-old

occupied italy, yugoslavia and greece. in other words - wreck havoc. it was hit and run. we'd blow up a bridge or a train and head up to the mountains. in the daytime it was suicide. the germans owned the adriatic. for that - hitler put a hit on them. the edict - shoot on site. he orders his c.o.'s to execute. period. andy says a group of his fellow o.s.s. italian-american buddies were sold out by the fasciasts. and all 16 were executed. but while andy, perry and alex were wounded in greece - they were never turned in by the villagers. i'll always be thankful for that. proud to wear the ballcap - he's considered the grand dad of special forces. andy mousalimas may be a war hero, but he hates war. humble - but not shy. he ran the well-known oakland bar and restaurant - king's x for years. andy even co-founded the first fantasy football league. fantasy football and the internet - probably the best marriage in america. it takes a lot to impress andy. but just being awarded the congressional medal of honor is pretty special. and when harrison ford personally - congratulated him... that was something... probably the only guy in hollywood who knows what the o.s.s is. it may be because ford's alter ego - indiana jones - was reportedly also a member of the top-secret o.s.s.

(pam) tonight, four additional murder charges have been filed against the suspected 'golden state killer'. 72-year-old -- joseph deangelo is accused of at least a dozen murders... and more than 50 rapes across california in the 1970s and '80s. deangelo -- a former police officer -- is facing charges in sacramento, orange and ventura counties. this is video of the suspect in a previous court appearance. authorities used d-n-a .. and a genealogical website to identify deangelo. second time in as many months that the agency has investigated a fire invovling a tesla. a probe is still underway into the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash involving a tesla model x that occured on march 23rd in mountain view. witnesses say the tesla in florida was traveling at a high rate of speed when it crashed into a wall and burst into flames. the n-t-s-b says it does not expect the tesla's autopilot system to be part of the probe -- and is instead focusing on the car's battery and how it might catch fire. (pam) an update now on the massive and unprecedented debris removal process... in the north bay. this follows the deadly and destructive wildfires which ravaged that region back in october. today, kron four's philippe djegal spoke with officials leading the disaster relief efforts .. he reports from santa rosa. (philippe) not since the 1906 earthquake has there been a debris removal project of this scale in california. so says mark ghilarducci (gil-our-do-chee)... director of the governor's office of emergency services. mark ghilarducci/cal oes- "we are now close to 99-percent complete of major operations. but we know that there are still, um, um, properties that need to be addressed. there are a handful of properties." the debris was hauled to seven different landfills in sonoma, napa, lake and mendecino counties. the combined federal and state costs of the project is about one-point-three billion

dollars. at a news conference held in santa rosa... the u-s army corps of engineers says two-point-two million tons of fire-related debris has been removed in the past seven months.col. eric mcfadden/us army- "which equates to nearly 314 square miles of fire area that's been cleared." the u-s environmental protection agency stripped hazardous household materials like paint, pesticides and propane tanks... from more than 65- hundred parcels of land. enrique manzanilla/epa- "we completed 95-percent of our assigned mission within the first month of being on the ground." some areas in the north bay have been difficult to reach because access was complicated during the fires. but the office of emergency services believes the debris removal project will be complete by the end of the month. in sonoma county, philippe djegal, kron four news. (pam) volcanic activity continues on hawaii's big island ... with plumes of smoke filling the air. new vents have formed in the kilauea (killa-way-uh) rift zone.. and they are emitting hazardous fumes. lava from the volcano now covers 116- acres ... and has destroyed at least 26- homes. 17-hundred residents have been evacuated near leilani estates... and the governor is asking for federal disaster relief. scientists say, kilauea's activity is very similar to what was seen just before a massive eruption in 19-24. they worry a similar explosive eruption.. spewing debris.. could occur at anytime and without warning.

showers continue with a weak area of low pressure in the northwest but it's dry in california. on the satellite image you can see high pressure building toward the bay area. at the same time a low pressure area is diving to the south. because of this the winds will be gusty and turn offshore for the next couple of days. temperatures will warm and be nice even near the coast. highs tomorrow will be in the 60s and 70s near the coast, 70s around the bay, and 80s inland. a wind advisory goes into effect on friday night into saturday morning. winds over the mountains could gust as highs as 55 mph. it will be sunny and breezy for the rest of the bay area on saturday. temperatures will cool some on mother's day but it will be mostly sunny with patchy coastal fog. more clouds will return toward the middle of next week with a slight chance of showers.
