( marty ) our top story this morning ...the first funeral in santa fe, texas takes place later today. this asan intense investigation continues following a mass shooting at a texas high school. a 17-year-old student is charged in the massacre after police say he walked into an art class at

the school friday morning -- killing 8 students and two teachers, while injuring 13 others. ten funerals are now being planned ... with houston texans defensive lineman j.j. watt offering to cover all expenses. the family of the shooting suspect is cooperating with police. they are asking for the public's patience while the investigation moves forward. ( marty ) it isn't just the santa fe high students that are having to cope with the tragedy ... the loss is felt nationwide. kron 4's ella sogomonian met with a u-c berkeley psychology professor on how to move forward. friday morning students across the united states woke up to news that another shooter claimed lives in a school...this time in santa fe, texas. bay area student activists took the san francisco city hall that same night to voice their outrage that classrooms are increasingly becoming crime scenes.sot: frank worrell, professor of school psychology, uc berkeley// "it increases their sense of

a fortress but deciding that guns in fact have a certain place in society that it's way too prominent in our society and showing that there are other ways an individual deals with one he has conflict with." ella sogomonia kron 4 news ( marty ) in fremont, a 25-year-old bicyclist is fighting for his life after after being hit in a bike lane. and investigators are asking for helping finding the driver responsible. the collision happened early tuesday morning along the stevenson boulevard 8-80 overpass. police say the cyclist was hit from behind ... and the driver kept going after the crash one cyclist we spoke with says he was almost hit using same the bike lane. ( marty ) police describe the car involved as a dark colored 2003 to 2007 toyota highlander ... with significant damage to

( marty )(ááávidboxááá) thousand of runners are lacing up their sneakers and gettng out their costumes. as we are less than an hour away from the 106th annual bay to breakers race here in san francisco. more than 50-thousand people run this 12-k every year. kron4's michelle kingston talked to runners about the big event. tk kelly, east bay"anything goes."joe lakeman, south bay"i have no expectations, but everyone tells me it's going to be crazy."the 106th annual bay to breakers 12k kicks off at 8 in the morning on sunday. dr. doug yarris, san francisco "you get to see the sites and meet people from all over the world and everyone's upbeat so it's really a fun thing."this isn't dr. doug yarris' first bay to breakers -- he ran last year's race just weeks after triple bypass surgery.dr. doug yarris, san francisco"i ran it as a centipede, as a toothbrush one year and a tube of toothpaste another. it's something to do just to prove to myself that i'm healthy."

( marty )for your money, the golden gate bridge is getting more expensive to cross. as of july 1st, the toll will increase by 25 cents. the hike means some drivers will pay up to 8 bucks to travel from the north bay to san francisco. there could be even more increases on the horizon... as the golden gate bridge district is

facing a nearly 4-million dollar deficit this fiscal year.... and tolls are the main source of revenue for the district. ( marty ) faculty at city college of san francisco will see a nine million dollar pay increase over the next three years. the board of trustees approved the new labor agreement yesterday. under the new contract, full and part time faculty members will get salary increases the next three years. the new agreement will bring the school's salaries more in line with other bay area community colleges. ( marty ) unemployment rates fell below 3 percent in all but one of the nine bay area counties counties during the month of april. according to the state, san mateo county has the lowest unemployment rate in the bay area at two- percent. it's followed by san francisco and marin county at 2-point-1 percent. solano county was the only county over 3 percent.... at 3 point 6 percent. the statewide unemployment rate also hit its lowest mark ever... at 4 point 2 percent. ( marty ) those in the golden state's recycling industry say recyclables are piling up with nowhere to go... this is since china imposed tougher standards and then closed the door on u.s. shipments. kron-4's dan kerman talks with local recyclers about the crisis and the impact it is having here in the bay area. putting recyclables into the blue bin has become routine for many. once picked up, glass, plastics, paper, cardboard and other items arrive at recycling companies and are sifted through and sorted by category. and items that don't belong, like clothing, or s and even this carnival size teddy bear are pulled out. for years these

processed items have been shipped in bulk and sold primarily to china. that is until now.sotthey just don't want the materialrichard valle runs tri-ced community recycling in union city. he says first china banned certain types of plastics and paper and limited the import of recyclables that had been contaminated with unwanted items. while that made life difficult for recyclers, it got a lot worse on may 4th when china decided to slam the door on all u.s. recyclables turning a problem into a crisis.sot richard valle/ tri-ced community recycling we've done such a great job especially in california of diverting materials from the landfills, that we've created this huge stream of material that now does not have a home at concord recycling center, their warehouse is filling up with now unwanted items. sot harry luan/concord recycling centerthis is mixed paper we used to be able to send and now we have to stockpile.those electrical wire, china use to take them all, now they refuse any of them, now we have to sit on them and wait for new markets, shrink wrap and some of the transport crates, plastic crates and plastic trays they used to take them all and now no more.some of these items

are no longer accepted at concord recycling. there's word new buyers in southern asia might pick up the slack now that china has slammed the door, but recyclers don't have the capacity to hold onto these items foreversotwe can only handle that much flow, so some of the material will end up in the landfillfor now the message to consumers is to keep recycling, but be more mindful of what should and should not be put in the bin, so once these new markets open, quality recyclables are not rejected because they have been contaminatedsotplastic spoons, plastic forks, any food ware that is contaminated with food is not recyclable.stop putting clothes, stop putting shoes, stop putting diapers, stop putting plastics of various grades you're your containers.plastic film, anything that comes around your razor blade, anything that comes around your shirts and your underwear, and baby toys, that type of plastic is not recyclable.ultimately many recyclers want the state to issue a uniform policy as to what should and should not be recycled going forward.standup dan kerman/union cityhere in alameda county , waste haulers, recyclers and government agencies have formed a task force to look

( marty )in the east bay... fremont police are looking for multiple suspects... who are boldly snatching gold chains right off of women's necks. police say just this month alone, this type of crime has happened 6 times. kron 4's gayle ong has the details. in this home surveillence video, a woman knocked down to the ground as a man snatches her necklace and runs offit happened near an elementary school..the suspects are targeting women walking their kids to school word is spreading in this quiet fremont neighborhood

that nasty fremont car wreck have been released from the hospital. you may remember three people also died in this crash. a friend of the family tells kron 4 that one of the four girls is still in the hospital. she is in the intensive care unit as her family sits by her bedside. the other three girls suffered cuts and bruises... but were able to go home. this picture comes from the family's gofundme page. this is video of dang tran... the man who officers say is responsible for the crash. he was released from jail friday night. the c-h-p says he was driving wrecklessly, speeding, and under the influence of marijuana when this crash happened last tuesday night. the district attorney has not yet filed charges. two children were killed... and 39 year old mother noelle johnson died. we spoke with one of johnson's friends this week.

( marty )in the north bay-- police arrested a high-risk sex offender and arsonist in petaluma. gilbert solis... who lives in san francisco... was booked into the sonoma county jail friday night. officers were called to an apartment complex just past ten p-m... on a report that solis was harrasing residents and smoking in the lobby. after checking their records... police discovered he never registered as a sex and arson offender. ( marty )in the south bay-- officers arrested a man for stalking a home in san jose friday. hector leanos junior was arrested on trespassing charges, and prowling. willow glen residents told police their video survalliance camera caught the suspect looking into a bedroom window and

walking down a driveway earlier this month. police also say the man is also dealing with domestic violence charges... unrelated to this case. ( marty )it was a horrifying discovery of a childs body found inside a storage unit in sacramento. now two people are in custody, including the father of the child. sara zendehnam has the story. voice of leyanie robinson, victim's mother: "i'm just really hurt and sad and mad."that's how this mom feels after learning the horrifying details of her 5-year-old daughter's death. callie had so much life to live... voice of leyanie robinson, victim's mother: "got compliments on how she's always smiling."...but will never get the chance. her body was found in this sacramento storage unit tuesday evening.(no font) "it's a tragedy that this has occurred. we're cooperating with law enforcement 100 percent." this is her dad - tyler anderson, and his wife - averyauna anderson. the reno police department says little callie was severely neglected and died in their reno apartment sometime in the last

( marty )one person is dead and another seriously injured, after they were attacked by a mountain lion while biking in washington state. mitch pitman has more. the day started as two friends out for a saturday in the woods.when out of nowhere, they were attacked by a cougar. officer:"at about 11 am today, we got a 911 call from one of our victims, and the first initial call came in, he was just yelling for help."that call dropped, but the 31-year- old man who survived was able to get back on his bike and ride it here, where he could get another call out.officer: "a short time later, he was able to call back and he let us let 911 know that a cougar attacked him and his friend that were on their mountain bikes out in the area here." law enforcement rushed to the area, located from a g-p-s ping, and found the cougar standing over the other man's body.officer:"the cougar actually drug the victim back into the woodline and he was found dead there."officials say they shot at it, and it

top cyclists were in the state capital saturday afternoon to finish the tour of california. on the men's side of the race... colombian cyclists dominated. 21-year-old, egan bernal took home first place... american star, katie hall finished ahead of the pack in the women's race the bay area cyclist won her first world tour event... after losing the race by one second last year. ( marty ) hall says this is the biggest win of her career. the former cal bear cyclist turned pro in 20-14 ( marty )take a look at this! a black bear wandered into a post office in colorado thursday night... and got stuck inside. as you can see... it made quite a mess before wildlife officials had to euthanize the animal. it wasn't the first time he had gotten into trouble and officials say he had to be put down.

and another seriously injured after they were attacked by a mountain lion while biking in washington state. mitch pitman has more. the day started as two friends out for a saturday in the woods.when out of nowhere, they were attacked by a cougar. officer:"at about 11 am today, we got a 911 call from one of our victims, and the first initial call came in, he was just yelling for help."that call dropped, but the 31-year- old man who survived was able to get back on his bike and ride it here, where he could get another call out.officer:

francisco. there could be even more increases on the horizon... as the golden gate bridge district is facing a nearly 4-million dollar deficit this fiscal year.... and tolls are the main source of revenue for the district. ( marty ) faculty at city college of san francisco will see a nine million dollar pay increase over the next three years. the board of trustees approved the new labor agreement yesterday. under the new contract, full and part time faculty members will get salary increases the next three years. the new agreement will bring the school's salaries more in line with other bay area community colleges. ( marty ) unemployment rates fell below 3 percent in all but one of the nine bay area counties during the month of april. according to the state, san mateo county has the lowest unemployment rate in the bay area at two-percent. it's followed by san francisco and marin county at 2-point-1 percent. solano county was the only county over 3 percent.... at 3 point 6 percent. the statewide unemployment rate also hit its

stalking a home in san jose friday. hector leanos junior was arrested on trespassing charges, and prowling. willow glen residents told police their video survalliance camera caught the suspect looking into a bedroom window and walking down a driveway earlier this month. police also say the man is also dealing with domestic violence charges... unrelated to this case. and another seriously injured after they were attacked by a mountain lion while biking in washington state. mitch pitman has more. the day started as two friends out for a saturday in the woods.when out of nowhere, they were attacked by a cougar. officer:"at about 11 am today, we got a 911 call from one of our victims, and the first initial call came in, he was just yelling for help."that call dropped, but the 31-year- old man who survived was able to get back on his bike and ride it here, where he could get another call out.officer: "a short time later, he was able to call back and he let us let 911 know that a cougar attacked him and his friend that were on their mountain bikes out in the area here." law enforcement rushed to the area, located from a g-p-s ping, and found the cougar standing over the other man's body.officer:"the cougar actually drug the victim back into the woodline and he was found dead there."officials say they shot at it, and it ran away.man:"it was kind of

( marty )some of the world's top cyclist were in the state capital saturday afternoon to finish the amgen tour of california. on the men's side of the race... colombian cyclists dominated the rest of the competition. 21-year-old, egan bernal took home first place... and daniel martinez came in third american star, katie hall finished ahead of the pack in the women's race the bay area cyclist won her first world tour event... after losing the race by one second last year.
