(robin) a big story we're following this morning ... a woman in her 90s was attacked at an east bay mall. and the search is on for the person accused in the vicious assualt. the elderly woman is in the hospital. and her family spoke with kron 4 about what happened, kron 4's gayle ong has the story. greg pedersen has lived in contra costa county for a number of years..he calls the

area a safe haven for families..he was shocked to hear his 93-year-old mother was attacked at this bank of america at the sun valley mall in concordthe attack happened friday afternoon - his elderly mother was parked in a handicap spot, she was with her care taker - when they were on their way to the bank police say that's when a man pushed the 93 year old woman on the groundhe took both women's purses and took off in a getaway carpederse n's mother is still in the hospital, with a broken hip and undergoing major surgery the suspect is described as six foot three, heavy set build, bald with a beard.anyone with information is asked to

( robin) in fremont, a 25-year-old bicyclist is fighting for his life after after being hit in a bike lane... and investigators are asking for helping finding the driver responsible. the collision happened early tuesday morning along the stevenson boulevard overpass of 8-80. police say the cyclist was hit from behind ... and the driver kept going after the crash. one cyclist we spoke with says he was almost hit using same the bike lane. (robin) police describe the car involved as a dark colored 2003 to 2007 toyota highlander ... with significant damage to the front passenger side headlight and fog lamp. (robin) a massive bbq..

thousands of people gathered at lake merrit for what some are calling a celebration of inclusivity. it's a response to a recent incident in which a white woman called police on a few black men using a charcoal grill at the lake. kron 4's hermela aregawi was at the bbq and has more. it looks like a party.. and it is. but it's also a protest. a stand against bias and hate. the event is a response to an incident that took place last month... and got out of hand after this woman called the police on a small group of mostly black people -for using a charcoal grill it's illegal to have a charcoal grill in the park here. iman saint jean/oaklandwell what she did was terrible. to call the police on people picknicking and bbqing is basically denying them of the human right to gather, enjoy life, to eat and live free. especially with the rise of police brutality. and murders by the police. she was basically trying to get them killed which is really scary. on sunday.. thousands of people of all backgrounds

the tragedy ... the loss is felt nationwide. kron 4's ella sogomonian met with a u-c berkeley psychology professor on how to move forward. friday morning students across the united states woke up to news that another shooter claimed lives in a school...this time in santa fe, texas. bay area student activists took the san francisco city hall that same night to voice their outrage that classrooms are increasingly becoming crime scenes.sot: frank worrell, professor of school psychology, uc berkeley// "it increases their sense of anxiety and they lose their sense of security. schools used to be a place where you were very safe even for kids who had problems at home they could go to school and have a sense of security and that's going away.uc berkeley professor of school psychology dr. frank worrell explains it may prove difficult for students immediately impacted by the shooting to continue their studies in light of the tragedy.sot: frank worrell, professor of school psychology, uc berkeley// "this incident is going to certainly have an impact on their ability to be successful in those endeavors so we may need to create more space for

is underway surrounding a partially decomposed body that was found floating in the water near the oakland coliseum. oakland police say they were notified of a body floating in the channel near baldwin street on sunday morning. officers pulled a man's body out of the water. the alameda county coroners office is now working to identify the body and determine the cause of death. (robin) faculty at city college of san francisco will see a nine million dollar pay increase over the next three years. the board of trustees approved the new labor agreement yesterday. under the new contract, full and part time faculty members will get salary increases the next three years. the new agreement will bring the school's salaries more in line with other bay area community colleges. (robin) unemployment rates fell below 3 percent in áall but oneá of the nine bay area counties during the month of april. according to the state, san mateo county has the lowest unemployment rate

in the bay area at two-percent. it's followed by san francisco and marin county at 2-point-1 percent. solano county was the only county over 3 percent.... at 3 point 6 percent. the statewide unemployment rate also hit its lowest mark ever... at 4 point 2 percent. (robin) a celebration of life was held at san francisco city hall for former police commission president julius turman....who died one week ago. it is still unclear how or why he died. mayor mark farrel said he "worked tirelessly to make this city safe and secure for everyone." kron 4's ella sogomonian

(nats music) loved ones gathered to pay respect to the late julius (nats music) loved ones gathered to pay respect to the late julius turman. he spent a lengthy career as an attorney before joining the san francisco police commission in 2012 of which he became the president two years ago. those who knew turman say it was a dream of his he fulfilled. sot: mayor mark farrell, city of san francisco//"julius did understand that in order for our city to thrive what we needed was trust and every day he sought to build bridges and forge bonds and strengths in relationships in e very aspect of his life and he did it for the residents of san francisco as well."turman spent his career tirelessly working to ensure equal rights for the lgbtq and african american communities. state senator scott weiner credited turman as his inspiration to pursue a political career. sot: scott weiner, senator//" and i am one of the people that he helped lift up i dont think i would be in office today if it

weren't for juliusturman and he was so passionate and particular about electing lgbt people into office. mark leno benefitted from that, campos benefitted from that, so many people benefitted from his love and embrace and support." speakers touted turman's honesty, candor and leadership. they commended him for building trust between san franciscans and the police department after a series of officer involved shootings by writing rules for the police department's use of force policies, and body worn cameras.sot: chief william scott, san francisco police department//"toward the end of his life with his health failing he continued to give his all for his city and his police department we can only imagine how difficult this must have been for him as he continued to press forward." turman passed away in his home last sunday at 52 years old leaving behind his parents, five siblings, many nieces and nephews...and a host of family and friends. union city police are looking for someone who has vandalized multiple buildings. police say áthe taggerá goes by the name "lil t snoopy" and has spray painted buildings on the east side of town since last week. anyone with information on the suspect is asked to call police. (robin)in san jose -- people in the almaden valley area say they've been hit with a string of mail thefts. this is video from may 13th. a neighbor we spoke to says they believe the thieves are using a master key to gain access to their mailboxes. it's possible they're on the hunt for tax return money. and this is video from may 19th. we spoke to another neighbor who believes the he was hit by the same thief. he says he reported the crime to both san jose police and the postal service. (robin) its become all to common...reports of people getting hit by cars while in crosswalks. and one of the cities hit the hardest.... is the city of millbrae... stanley roberts has more on this edition of people behaving badley. what are the rules when someone is in a crosswalk (long pause) to stop and what did you do i slowed down here is the driver just moments before we had a brief discussion (sound of engine reviving) but to explain what's going on i'll start from here, these two men are

community services officers but today we'll call them decoys there job is to walk back and forth across the street when they get the walk signal they are testing drivers to see if they follow state law many follow the law, but a few do not .like this city of san francisco water department truck(traffic sounds)and this huge dump truck . and the mini-van with followed close behind both will be stopped we get the mini- van the reason i pulled you over was because the pedestrian was in the crosswalk and uh did you see the pedestrian. this conversation happened multiple times with multiple deputy's the reason i'm stopping you today is because we're conducting a pedestrian enforcement operation at the intersection of millbrae ave and el camino there was a pedestrian lawfully in the crosswalk an the time you made your right turn you failed to yield to that pedestrian oh and it wasn't just drivers see this guy sitting at the bus stop reading a piece of paper it's a ticket because he darted across the street at another crosswalk so yea with

the blinking light, you not allowed to cross unless there's a time for it ok and then when the red hands steady you can't cross because i don't know if you noticed you were in the northbound lanes of traffic when they had a green light because you tried to run across and you didn't make it and if somebody gone tried to start (paper ripping) you could have been hurt for a town as small as millbrae they've had too many people hit by cars everyone is running late to everything and i understand that everyone in society is late in general due to the heavy congestion and traffic but people need to understand they need to slow down and follow the rules of the road and if people can do that we could have prevented some of the fatalities that we've had in the pedestrian crosswalk in fact there is still one memorial on el camino realnow i guess you're wondering just how many drivers did i talk to so you got caught ( behaving badly ) well lets say a few i don't know what the officer was asking me and i'll have more in a future edition of people behaving badly in the city of millbrae stanley roberts kron 4 news

(robin) a congressional candidate in southern california confronts a transgenger woman at denny's... and posts the encounter on facebook. jaz-mina saa-vedra live streamed this encounter. it all started when saavedra saw a transgender woman... using the women's restroom and then harasses her. saavedra is a republican running for the 44th congressional district... which includes compton and watts. on facebook, saavedra used the video to urge supporters to donate money to her campaign. the video has been viewed by thousands of people and many are outraged the woman was targeted:

and secure in a private restroom.">(robin) denny's released a statement saying -- "there is no place for discrimination of any kind in our restaurants." back in 2016... governor brown signed a bill that requires single-stall toilets be designated as gender-neutral. possible solutions to curb gun violence. kim hutcherson has a closer look at the tributes and the gun debate. a somber sunday. at a memorial church service honoring the victims of the santa fe high school shooting-- texas governor greg abbott comforted parents and survivors. "thank you, god bless you."outside the church-- this rainbow greeted the grieving community.the 17-year old suspect is accused of opening fire during an art class-- killing two teachers and 8 students.including-- pakistani exchange student-- sabika sheikh-- whose funeral was held today.the motive is still unclear-- but the mother of one victim, 16-year-old shana fisher, says her daughter may have been targeted because she rejected the suspect's advances for months.sadie baze, victim's mom: "she finally stood up to him becuase her younger sister was being bullied in school and she was showing her look this is what you do. you gotta stand up to him and say no it's not right."meanwhile--

lawmakers are weighing in on the shooting. on cnn's state of the union-- texas lieutenant governor dan patrick blamed the deaths on in part on too many entrances. lt. gov. dan patrick, (r) texas: "we need to get down to one or two entrances into our schools. you have the necessary exits for fire, of course. we have to funnel our students into our schools so we can put eyes on them"he also said teachers need guns, and parents should secure firearms safely at home. meanwhile-- virginia democratic senator mark warner called for some degree of gun control. sen. mark warner (d) virginia: "people want to hear more than thoughts and prayers from politicians" i'm kim hutcherson reporting. ( darya ) in the east bay... a 93-year-old woman is recovering after being attacked at a bank of america in concord. it happened near the sun valley mall. the woman was with her caretaker. they had just parked their car and were on their way to the bank. police say that's when a man pushed the elderly woman to the ground. he took both women's purses and took off in a getaway car. now the victim's son is talking about what his mother went through. ( darya ) pedersen's mother is still in the hospital with a broken hip. police are still looking for her attacker. ( darya ) happening today... two men accused of stabbing a man to death in santa rosa will be in court this morning. johnny

martinez and gabriel cardin heredia are expected to enter pleas. police say the two men killed shaun avila back on may 9th. they were later arrested in tracy. ( james ) happening tonight... a town hall meeting on the latest police shooting in san francisco. the shooting happened on may 11... when police were investigating a car burglary on steiner street and geary boulevard. one person was arrested at the scene. but a second person got in a car and took off. that person then crashed into two san francisco police cars on o'ferrell street. that is where police opened fire. nobody was shot. tonight's meeting starts at 6... at the hamilton recreation center. ( james ) a celebration of life is held for san francisco's former police commission president julius turnman. turman died one week ago. loved ones gathered at city hall yesterday to pay their respects. turman was an attorney before joining the san francisco police commission in 2012. he became president 2 years later. those who knew turman said it was a dream that he

( darya ) also in the east bay... union city police are looking for someone who has vandalized multiple buildings. police say the tagger goes by the name "lil t snoopy" and has spray painted buildings on the east side of town since last week. ( james ) at costco locations.. local businesses can donate to the childrens miracle network.. a non-profit which fund treatment for children in hospitals. for just five-hundred dollars businesses that donate get to hang a banner inside. sacramento black rifle store has had a banner up for years.. but this year it all changed. the banner has the store logo on it and the logo contains an image of an a-r-15. costco took down the banner and refunded the check in full. then the roseville costco came into the gun store and said they want to hang the banner in their store.

united states and china have reached an agreement on trade. in a joint statement, the two countries announced that china has agreed to, quote, "significantly increase" purchases of u-s goods and services. the trump administration demanded this as part of efforts to reduce a trade imbalance between the two nations. it's unclear just how much the increase will be. but the announcement comes following weeks of tariff threats from both countries that had experts worried about a potential trade war. ( james ) starbucks is once again announcing a new policy that allows anyone to sit in its cafes ... even if they don't buy anything. the new policy comes weeks after two black men... who hadn't bought anything... were arrested at a philadelphia starbucks. the company says its previous policies were ambiguous... leaving decisions on whether people could sit in stores or use the restroom up to store managers. last week the company announced anyone could use their restrooms. starbucks says it has told workers to consider anyone who walks into its stores a customer... regardless of whether they make a purchase.

( james ) happening today... the mother and son accused of running a massive prostitution ring in the bay area will be in court today. police say david romesburg and his mother fay ran the ring in rohnert park for more than 10- years. during that time -- police say they employed about 150 women. at least one woman says she was underage when they recruited her. another says she was sexually assaulted during her interview. prowling. people living in willow glen told police their video survalliance cameras caught the suspect -- hector leanos junior -- looking into a bedroom window and walking down a driveway. police say leanos is also dealing with domestic violence charges... unrelated to this case. ( darya ) in san jose -- people in the almaden valley area say they've been hit with a string of mail thefts. this is video from may 13th. a neighbor we spoke to says they believe the thieves are using a master key to gain access to their mailboxes. it's possible they're on the hunt for tax return money. and this is video from may 19th. we spoke to another neighbor who believes he was hit by the same thief. he says he reported the crime to both san jose police and the postal service. ( darya ) faculty at city college of san francisco will see a nine million dollar pay increase over the next three years. the board of trustees approved the new labor agreement over the weekend. under the new contract... full and part time
