a pride-filled american tradition - honoring the men and women who fought to protect our freedom. people all over the country are coming together on this memorial day. good evening i'm grant lodes. (catherine) and i'm catherine heenan in for vicki liviakis. there were celebrations across the country today-- and here in the bay area. there were commemorations all day in washington, d.c... as well as locally in san bruno, san jose, and san francisco. kron 4's terisa estacio reports from san francisco... where people gathered at the national cemetery to pay tribute to those who died serving our country. it was a special day here at sf national cemetary. today marked the 150 anniversary of the annual memorial day celebration. . but before things got underway to honor the many who gave their life for their country. there were dozens working behind the scenes to get everything

were at the 150th anniversary of the memorial day commemoration at san francisco's presidio. among those who attending -- senator dianne feinstein, lieutenant governor gavin newsom, san francisco mayor mark farrell, assemblyman david chiu, and president of the board of supervisors london breed. today-- newsom said it's important to celebrate the service of everyone who has fought for our country. sot gavin newsom. (grant) more than one million americans have been killed while serving.

(bagpipers)(catherine) san jose's oak hill cemetary was the backdrop for one of the south bay's most widely attended memorial day ceremonies.. there are 14- thousand veterans buried here at oak hill. each and every grave was decorated with an american flag. roughly 5-thousand people were expected to attend one or more of four separate events honoring veterans.. francis mcvey/veterans council of santa clara county (catherine) this year's observance featured exhibits including vintage tanks.. also a fly-by from a fully-restored vietnam war-era huey helicopter.

(grant) now to san bruno...and a memorial day observance marking its 77th year. kron4's haaziq madyun reports. there are 143-thousand military service men and women buried here at the golden gate national cemetary in san bruno. they have served in the civil war and every major war that has followed since thensot on this memorial day there were proud representative s from each branch of the u.s. military like retired u.s. army staff sergeant leo mcardle who comes from a long line of family members who have served their countysot sotmadge fordyce speaks for women of her day who supported the war effort back at home. they were called

expected to be okay. police have not yet identified the suspects. (grant) a pilot and passenger are killed after a small plane crashed in petaluma. it happened shortly after takeoff yesterday afternoon. the plane was turning around and heading back to the sonoma county airfield when police say it crashed on a street in petaluma. nobody on the ground was hurt-- but both people on the plane died. the f-a-a and n-t-s-b are currently investigating the crash. the f-a-a says the plane was a two-seat single engine airplane that was built from a kit. (catherine) another big story we're following tonight-- the oakland police department continues to crack down on illegal sideshows... the department tweeted out these photos yesterday. the caption read -- "sideshow units out in full force this weekend. multiple vehicles towed so far today." it's not clear where the sideshows were happening.. (catherine) homeless people living out of their cars in berkeley.... are protesting an eviction notice issued by the city. kron

4's lydia pantazas was at the berkeley marina today....and talked to some of the people fighting to stay. the city of berkeley has posted a warning that if those living in their vehicles in the marina do not move them by this morning, monday, may 28, they will betowed, fined and impounded. most of those living in vehicles down at the marina have been evicted from their housing in berkeley or surrounding cities and/or from long-standing, organized homeless encampments such as the albany bulb. "i wasn't really sure what to think. you know we have been allowed to be here for so long. i just don't understand why we are being asked to move along. you know we are really peaceful, you know never have any run ins with anybody. police never stop by here because there's never a reason for them to." chalk up another record- breaking sale in the wild ride that is the bay area real estate market. this time it's sunnyvale in the spotlight. kron four's rob fladeboe takes a look at a deal that is now in the record books, but probably not for long. escrow closed last week on this large, 2-story, single family home on albion court in sunnyvale. the highly sough after home tucked away on a quiet cul de sac in a west side neighborhood sold for $3,150,000 dollars. according to mls listings it's now the city's most expensive single-parcel sale going back at least 18 years. keller williams anne moran was the

nat oh my godas the rain poured down, the streets filled with muddy water.mucho natthirty=nine year old eddie hermond stepped into the raging flood to help a woman struggling to save her cat. unfortunately during that effort, they saw him go under the water and not surface. hermond was an air force veteran and member of the maryland national guard. ellicott city's historic downtown dates back to the 17=hundreds..it was nearly wiped out by a devastating flood in 2016.residents say this one was worse."the destruction was just unbelievable. there were trees sticking out everywhere and cars standing up straight, wholly upright, everywhere. buildings wiped out, windows gone, inventory from the stores everywhere. it's all wiped out."hundreds of people had to be pulled from the upper stories of the old buildings.natpolice warned drivers not to drive through the water,some buildings were covered up to their second stories."it was flooded with water, water was coming in through the walls."today, the damage assessment has started,

(grant) a new warning in hawaii... winds are firing up and will blow volcanic gases from the kilauea summit. the hawaii county civil defense agency expects the winds to pick up around the fissures on the east rift zone. an explosion sent an ash cloud about 13 thousand feet into the air this morning. sulfur dioxide and ash are continuing to impact air quality and officials encourage limiting the time spent outdoors. the oozing lava has destroyed 82 structures on hawaii's big

starbucks will close more than 8-thousand stores nationwide tomorrow -- to conduct anti- bias training.. the first of many steps the company is taking - to restore its diversity-friendly image... starbucks began lining up bias training experts after the arrestof two black men at a philadephia store last month. the men had asked to use the restroom and refused to buy anything or leave when asked. they'd been waiting for a friend.

tracking local stories. here's a look at what's going on in your neighborhood right now. (grant) now to the north bay... c-h-p officers are out in maximum enforcement as the holiday weekend wraps up. there have been several d-u-i arrest in marin county since friday-- which is when the max enforcement period started. one of the people arrested -- a woman who was swerving on highway 101 near novato. police say she had 2 kids in the car with her... an 18-day- old baby and an 8-year-old child. along with d-u-i... police say the woman was also charged with 2 felony counts of child endangerment. the maximum enforcement period ends tonight at midnight. (grant) also in the north bay. a 18-year-old man is behind bars... arrested for driving under the influence. it happened around eight thirty saturday night on southbound 101... near the robin williams tunnel in marin county. there officers learned that the suspects vehicle overturned. the chp says one of it's aircraft

happened to be nearby and caught that driver trying to flee the scene... officers then found 18-year-old angel negron-clay hiding in the woods. he was arrested for dui and felony hit and run. five people inside the car during the incident....ranging from 16 to 21... were treated at the scene by medics and released. (catherine) in the east bay... alameda county firefighters are investigating a suspicious fire at a preschool center in newark. it happened saturday afternoon at the safari kid preschool. investigators say the school smelled like gasoline when crews arrived. they have confirmed to kron-4 someone broke into the preschool and it appears the fire was intentionally started. the school is closed until further notice. (catherine) a drop-off box is available for voters in downtown berkeley. it's in front of the martin luther king junior civic center building... about a block from the downtown bart station. voters have to submit their

(pam) new tonight at 6. a santa rosa resident is behind bars .... after allegedly driving under the influence and crashing into another vehicle. the accident happened at 3-30 in the morning near stony point road and hearn avenue. officers arrived to two cars both deemed.. unable to drive. three people were hospitalized in the crash... two were in the toyota prius and one in the honda civic... police say, it was the driver of the civic, jaime arias- garfias, who had been drinking alcohol and was arrested on multiple charges. (ken) police say four people have been arrested in connection with a stabbing at dolores park in san francisco. the stabbing happened just before 7:30 last night. police say they responded

to the park after reports of a fight. the man who was stabbed is expected to recover. police aren't releasing the names of the suspects yet. (ken) in the north bay.... the identities of a pilot and passenger who died after a small plane crash in petaluma have yet to be released. the crash happened shortly after take off yesterday afternoon. witness said it sounded like the plane was having engine problems... and was turning around and heading back to the airport when it crashed in a street about half a mile from the runway. nobody on the ground was hurt-- but both people on the plane died. the f-a-a and n-t-s-b are currently investigating the crash. the f-a-a says the plane was a two-seat single engine r-v that is home-built from a kit. (pam) homelessness in berkeley is a growing challenge ..... and now, some of those who are homeless are facing eviction from their temporary situations.. the city of berkeley has posted a warning, that if those living in their vehicles in the marina, do not move them by today.. monday, may 28, they will be towed, fined and impounded. most

national anthem friday night. they were told the star spangled banner would not be played before the central section softball championship game ... so fans took matters into their own hands. tournament organizers say, they did not plan to play the anthem for that game because they had already done so, before the first game of the day. however, they now say, that was a mistake... and that they will play the anthem before áeveryá game from now on. (pam) surfers in pensacola beach,lorida, spent the day, ignoring the warnings and braving the storm to ride some big waves before the full force of alberto rolls in. inland with temperatures soaring into the 90s. even at the coast it wias nice with highs there in the 60s and low 70s. we'll see a little sea breeze tonight but overall offshore winds continue into tomorrow. it will be a very mild well into the evening and only cooling into the 50s and 60s by early morning. on the satellite you can see high pressure over the state bringing us the sunshine. it will bring another day of sunny weather but we may see a few patches of fog late in the day with cooler temperatures at the beach. it will still be hot inland tomorrow with highs in the upper 80s and low 90s, 70s and 80s around the bay and 60s at the coast. it will become much cooler with windy weather on wednesday and thursday with highs as much as 30 degrees cooler. high pressure will return on friday to warm us up into the weekend with mostly sunnu skies.
