(robin) he's the man who made "the catch." now... family, fans and football fans are mourning the loss of dwight clark. clark suffered from a-l-s. he was just 61-years-old. kron 4's charles clifford got reactions from fans in san mateo. at the 3rd avenue sports bar and gril in san mateo, long time 49er fans were shocked to hear of the death of dwight clark.sotit's sad, obviously, knowing how young he was.soti was sad.reflecting on his career, everyone here remembers the moment that in many ways defined dwight clark's legacy.soteveryone know the catch.sotthe catch.sot i was at the game when he made that famous catch.mike warren is a life long 49er fan. he was actually at the nfc championship game against the cowboys in 1981 when clark made the catch sotwarren says he also spoke with clark a few times over the years and found

him to be a friendly and approachable guy.sota good human being. a good player, obviously, but i always thought he had a lot of class. (robin) a-l-s is often referred to as lou gehrig's disease.. named after another athelete ... professional baseball player lou gehrig. once people are diagnosed with the disease their life expectancy becomes much shorter. kron 4's mark carptener shows us the challenges one bay area man faces living with a-l-s. there is still much to be learned about als, but one thing that is known is that right now- there is no cure. it's a debilitating, painful illness that affects nerves in the brain and spinal cord.... progressively shutting down a patient's ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. the average life expectancy for

someone with als is two- to-five years, b ut this afternoon-- i spoke with a man who's been battling the disease for more than a decade. when someone is diagnosed with lou gehrig's disease, the fight usually doesn't last long. but als has found one it's strongest challengers in matt chaney. the 56-year-old has been living with the illness for the last 16-years... and he's learned to adapt. the symptoms first showed up when he lost rength in his right hand... and the loss of function eventually spread to the rest of his upper body... bound a wheelchair, he relies heavily on the remaining limited abilities of his feet... using his toes to type on an ipad... the same ipad where he read about dwight clark's diagnosis. through his caregiver, chaney communicates..the difficult struggle of living with als. "it has been the greatest challenge of his life. losing independence is agonizing, same with losing the ability to communicate." there are no definitive causes for als, but clark suspects years of football may have had something to do with it. chaney played at the high school and collegiate levels for 6-years... and while

he can't say for sure if the sport was a factor, he feels repeated shots to the head are never beneficial. "he thinks if the brain is rattled, rattled around in the skull, something is bound to go haywire." while life with als has been difficult, chaney's resolve to keep fighting has not been deterred... official mayor ... and 2 of this year's candidates were out and about in a final push for votes. we caught up with superisor jane kim at sunday streets in golden gate park ... as she reminded some san franciscans what she's been up to in the last decade ... including figting for minimum wage and tenant protection.im proud to have led the initiative that has made city college free for all our residents, and also proud to have negotiated and won more affordable and middle income housing than any one else on the boardher team of volunteers have knocked on a hundred thousand doors and held over a hundred house parties. they believe she can create change in the city.the child care initiative .. prop c, which we're all excited about. to provide affordable childcare for everyone in the city.the most vulnerable, the most low income people have been pushed out and jane is the one that can fix it. i don't think anyone can stop ehat's happening, but she's the one that can put a plug in it and stop the trickle.over in the richmond district, london breed held a meet and greet with voters.i'm really impressed with her homeless platform. she really want to help people and get them off

the streetbreed is also working on changing the mental health system so families arent tied up in the criminal justice system instead of getting the help they need.she has the type of energy to take the city in the direction it needs to go ini think it says a lot that the whole board of supervisors voted her unanimously to be the leader of the board. it says she can be a coalition leader. homelessness, housing and public safety are important to her platform...what i'm also focused on is education in the future. and making sure the next generation of young people have access to companies right in their back yards.with some similar and varying interests, both candidates are working to make the city more inclusive for all san franciscansreporting from san francisco ... ali reid ... kron 4 news. (robin) the june ballot is filled with initiatives... and while most are tied to specific cities and counties,

there is one that everyone in the bay area will be voting on. it's regional measure 3, and it aims to reduce traffic congestion. kron 4's dan kerman reports. if regional measure 3 passes, those who drive across all bay area toll bridges except the golden gate will pay more. tolls will go up 1 dollar in 2019, an additional dollar in 2022, and a 3rd dollar in 2025 to generate 4 and half billion dollars over 25 years. sot john grubb/c.o.o., bay area council 21-32we believe people are willing to invest a little bit more to get the traffic out of their way or be able to have public transportation available to them and to other people in the bay area.john grubb is with bay area council, one of the main sponsors of the measure.he says that money will fund about 3 dozen transportation and public transit improvements throughout all regions of the bay area, each one designed to reduce traffic congestion .sot grubbif you're sick and tired

of the traffic situation in the bay area this is our best shot to improve it, this is our best list of projects that we could possibly put together the projects include extending bart to san jose and santa clara, 300 additional bart cars, tripling ferry service currently on the bay, completing the expansion of highway 101 along the novato narrows, improvements to the flood prone highway 37 and a variety of high way interchanges. there's also money for ac transit and san francisco muni.sot driver would you be willing to a little bit more in tolls if it would reduce congestion? yes i would be willing to pay if it was really going to do that. but i doubt it issome drivers remain skeptical regional measure 3 will reduce the gridlock sot david schonbrunn/transdef.org 134-141 planning county by county does not work, it fails on the regional level.david schonbrunn is with transdef.org, one of the leading opponents of measure 3. he says only 40% of the projects are worthwhile and more focus should be placed on ridesharingsot schonbrunnthis will do nothing whatsoever for congestion, what it will do is move politically favored projects alongsot grubbi guarantee the answer is yes it is going to get better if the

bart stations surfaced ... bart has now deployed a team specifically targeting the cleanup of bio-hazards. kron 4's ali reid spoke with riders at powell street bart station. powell street was actually the station one of our viewers snapped photos of needles on a bart train.and that was only one incident.drug use in and around bay area train stations is an epidemic.pkgbart's rapid response team is now in full effect ... their job ... clean up any biohazard materials. including needles.taniesha ballmanmy daughter get on the bart every day and i'd sure hate for her to sit on a needle in fact, we spoke to this woman who says she sat on a hypodermic needle on bart a bart train.i just kind of touched it and it was a syringe tip.now, if riders see needles or drug use, they can go to bart-dot-gov. at the bottom of the page, in red lettering, click on "report a biohazard" and fill out a quick form. patrice gastile imma put it to the test. i'll be on the richmond train at 6:57 in the morning, and if i see anything bart.gov and imma submit and see what happens bart officials recognize the national homeless and opiod epidemic is now causing a

local problem for its riders. having a rapid response team member at the macarthur or lake merritt station on deck will hopefully get to any upcoming issue as soon as possible. seeing all 5 of the systems lines pass through those 2 stations.alyssa allen (young girl)there has been instances where i havent felt safe on bart so it makes me feel saferfred johnson / bart riderby the time i report it, something may come up, so i dont think it'll be safer.some riders are optimistic ... others not so much.right now there are currently 14 rapid response team members and bart is working to increase that number to 19.when a train operator receives a report of a biohazard on a car, they (robin) that was kron4's ali reid reporting. being held at the contra costa county juvenile detention center. (robin) the man accused of planning a christmas day bombing and shooting attack at san francisco's pier 39 has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. everitt jameson pleaded guilty to attempting to aid a terrorist organization. prosecutors say he told undercover agents he planned to use pipe bombs to channel victims into part of pier 39-- so he could shoot them. under a plea agreement - prosecutors are dropping a second charge of distributing bomb-making information. mateo county. in order to pass, it requires a 55-percent super majority vote. the president of the board of trustees says the jefferson union high school district is the lowest paying in the county... a recent survey showed 20-percent of their staff say they will have to move in the next five years because of the cost of living. if measure j passes... the housing will be built in daly city at the former parking lot at serramonte high school. educators will be able to live in the units for up to 7 to 10 years. (robin) and there are two statewide primaries taking place today including the race to become california's next governor. the most recent poll shows former san francisco mayor gavin newsom with a big lead over the rest of the field. republican businessman john cox was in second place behind newsom followed by former los angeles mayor antonio villa-rai-gosa. because of california's open primary system... the top two ávote gettersá will be on the ballot in november

regardless of party. the other statewide race is for u-s senator. dianne feinstein could face a toughter primary than originally expected after failing to get the endorsement of the state democratic party. the party was split between endorsing instein and her opponent kevin de leon. (robin) voters in santa clara county will also decide whether to recall judge aaron persky. he is the judge who sentenced swimmer brock turner to just 6 months in jail after being convicted of sexual assault. persky says he was only following the law when he issued the sentence. persky's supporters are telling voters that recalling a sitting judge threatens judicial independence. (robin) two men are in jail accused of sexually assaulting a san francisco woman ... after she was dragged into a car while waiting for a rideshare driver. the victim was taken on a drive to sonoma ... and beaten along the way.kron 4's ella sogomonian has the story. given the severity of this random attack five sonoma county sheriff's investigators say they dedicated 2 thousand hours of research sifting through surveillence videos across sonoma and surrounding bridges to help catch the suspects.33-year-old fredi analberto lopez-flores of novato and 24-year-old christian alejandro may quintero of sonoma were arrested this weekend...accu sed of brutally assaulting a san francisco woman back in april. the sonoma county sheriff's department reports the 24-year-old victim left bruno's in the mission district on april 14th and called a ride share car...but got out after she got worried the driver was heading in the opposite direction of her home. as she waited for another driver at fulton and stanyan streets two men pulled

up and shoved her in their car...then beat, choked and sexually assualted her all the way to sonoma.sot: sgt. spencer crum, sonoma county sheriff's department// "it's going to be a long road for her, we are offering victim counseling, victim witness counseling but this is pretty traumatic."five detectives worked feverishly for 2000 hours reviewing surveillence video from the golden gate bridge and near a sonoma safeway where the victim escaped ...in both locations they spotted this black dodge magnum with a neon blue light on the back plate...which linked the men...along with another key piece of evidence...sot: sgt. spencer crum, sonoma county sheriff's department// "also we saw in the surveillence video we saw one of the suspects cam into a gas station and bought a condom right around the time the victim assaulted. so we put out a flyer to local agencies with the suspect's picture and the possible suspect's vehicle and a novato police officer had recognized this person and vehicle as someone he'd arrested and towed the car." twenty search warrants that included the victim and both suspects' phones also revealed their locations and times

matched up.both men face a long list of sexual assault charges and are in sonoma county jail.lopez-flores is being held on a 2 million dollar bail...while quintero has no bail option because he faces an attempted murder charge.sonoma county sheriff's detectives feel confidant they've caught the men responsible and are pleased to believe they've prevented these alleged suspects from causing future harm...while the victim faces a long road to recovery.in sonoma county ella sogomonian kron 4 news. (robin) happening now-- police are looking for two teens who robbed a 10-year-old boy in san francisco. it happened on monday on market street near civic center bart station. police say the boy was walking with the phone in his hands ... when the robbers came from behind -- grabbed it and ran. police say the robbers are around 15- years-old. year. the deputy health director for marin county says it's the disease, also known as pertussis can be hard to diagnose because it's symptoms are similar to that of the common cold. but it can be very serious, and even deadly for infants. we are most concerned about children and infants especially in fence because one they're not protected by their vaccine yet so they do not have an immunity against pertussis which is the bacteria that causes whooping cough as well is their respiratory symptoms could be more severe the marin county health department is reaching out to those exposed to make sure any infants or pregnant women in their households that they are protected. during the last big california outbreak in 2014, two babies died. it's reccommended that newborns get their first vaccine in the five shot series starting at 2 months....and everyone in the family, even grandma and grandpa should make sure they are up to date with their vaccine.students are required to get a booster shot as they enter kinderarten and then again in 7th grade. and in 2015 a law passed stripping parents the ability to get an exemption to that
