( robin ) new this morning ... a person was found dead on the right-hand shoulder of northbound 101 in san jose. chp says the body was found around 1 am this morning ... north of story road. officials have not released how the person died. ( robin )in the east bay... one person is dead and three children are injured... after being involved in a deadly car crash.it happened last night in concord around 6-30... near

parkside drive and concord boulevard. police say several people called 9-1-1 to report the crash.when officers arrived they say the driver in the white car was dead.three children in the grey suv, all under the age of ten... were hurt.they were taken to children's hospital in oakland... no word on their condition. the crash is still under investigation. ( robin ) a big story we are tracking out of the east bay and here in san francisco. two violent attacks that may have targeted gay men. kron 4's j-r stone spoke with one of the victims who says... he was hit in the head with either a tire iron or crow bar. sotscott long is describing the moments he describing the

scott long is describing the moments he was attacked as he walked home in the laurel neighborhood of oakland.sot long's jaw was so badly damaged that he had to have reconstructive surgery where doctors used metal plates. he also lost several teeth. we've blurred out part of this picture because it is so graphic. long is a l-g-b-t-q human rights activist who has worked all across the world. he is one of at least two gay men in recent weeks who have been attacked in the bay area. he doesn't know if this was a hate crime and doesn't know why someone came after him.sot long thinks that society as a whole needs to address problems of both violence and mental illness.sot

( robin ) that was kron 4's j-r stone reporting. scott long says he wants people to be careful in the short term... but in the long term he feels the city needs to address the violence problem. ( robin )we now know we now know the name of the

officer who shot a suspect in the back... in san francisco's north beach neighborhood. officer joshua cabillo, a five year veteran, was part of a group of officers who approached four men on june 9th. when one of the men started to run away the officer opened fire saying the suspect had a gun. a handgun was later recovered at the scene. police say the men were seen earlier with an open container of alcohol. the suspect, oliver bacenas, was shot in the back... he remains in the hospital. ( robin )in the east bay... two men brazenly rob an a-t-&-t store... while a customer is inside. now police need your help catching the thieves. it happened last night on arnold drive near morello avenue in martinez. kron 4's ali reid has the story... and explains how they were able to get away with thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. police say typically there are

two employees working per shift, but there are times when there's only one person in the store.last night there was only one employee when the robbery occurred.pkg surveillance photos show the two men allegedly responsible for robbing this at&t store of tens of thousands of dollars worth of merchandise.we're talking phones, accessories. i still havent gotten through the entire list yet but we're up near 50k and we still need to reach out to loss prevention to get an exact numberalso gone, about 180 dollars from the register. initially this man walked in ... looking at phones and asking questions ... minutes later, his accomplice strolls in ... then they force the employee to the back.i think it's pretty bold and brazen.it may've been questionable to a customer that walked in during the robbery, as to why this supposed man wearing an employee shirt and saggy pants was assisting. well, according to p-d, while both men were in the stockroom with the real employee ...puts on the employee's shirt. makes the employee take the shirt off, puts the shirt on and represents himself as an employee.detectives on the case say they've never seen anything like this before. but the at&t staff member may have been under duress.he has no idea what they're gonna do to him. they say they have a gun standuppolice say this robbery happened about half hour before closing.they're now comparing other robberies at that location as well as a nearby verizon store ... to

( robin )police are still shaken up... after a shootout lead to a car chase, a foot chase, three arrests, and one suspect being shot. the incident happened around 11-30 last night... at the intersection of east street and railroad avenue in union city. officers say, they attempted to pull over a vehicle that was reported stolen... when three male teenagers in the car started shooting at them. a gun battle ensued... two of the teens ran away. the driver sped off, officers were able to stop him about a quarter of

a mile away where he then ran away. eventually... all three juveniles were found and arrested. (sot) ( robin ) union city police say ... they were surprised how young these suspects are... for such a bold crime. two of them are 16, and one... 15. wave of summer is looming with the possibility of triple digit temperatures by this weekend. there are already at least 11 different fires around the state, meaning it's all hands on deck for cal-fire. every job has been filled and every fire truck is ready to go when they get the call. but calfire says last fall's north bay fires are a reminder that firefighters arent the only ones who should be ready to take action. ( robin ) calfire says the new normal in california... is that fire season is a year round situation, now and that staffing levels are changing to reflect that.

( robin ) the eighth whale this season has washed up on a bay area beach. this time it is an endangered blue whale. the 62-foot long juvenile female .. was found early tuesday morning along the point reyes seashore in marin county. kron 4's charles clifford the story. the marine mammal center is sausalito says that so far this year they have investigated the deaths of 8 whales here in the bay area. the latest is a blue whale. the carcass was spotted in the waters near the farallon islands this past weekend and it has now washed ashore along pt reyes.the 62-foot long juvenile female blue whale was found early tuesday morning along a remote stretch of shore a few miles south of limantour beach. on tuesday afternoon, a team from the marine mammal center examined the remains and concluded that the animal died from blunt force trauma consistent with being hit by a ship. the loss of a blue whale is particularly troubling because these animals are endangered worldwide. shawn johnson is the director of veterinary science at the marine mammal centersotblue whales are highly endangered. theres only about 300 along the

california coast. we have responded to one blue whales in two years so this is the first one this year. of the whales that were found this year, there were several fin whales. one fin whale was found in alameda, another washed ashore on a beach near bolinas.the marin mammal center says that although 8 dead whales is not good it's also not unusual to see dead whales this time of year because the whales are migrating north to alaska to feed for the summer and they often cross busy shipping lanes.sotunfortunatly, ships and whales don't live together very well. we have been documenting ship strikes for years and giving that information to policy makers. of the dead whales that have been found this year, the majority have died as a result of human cause including ship strikes and net entanglements. at point reyes, charles clifford kron 4 news. video surveillance cameras. officers say the man robbed a public storage office on aborn road in san jose last month. the man waked into the office waiving a gun...and demanded money from an employee. the suspect then left in a 19-90's era chevrolet blazer. if you recognize the suspect... the san jose police department would like to hear from you. ( robin )on the peninsula... the san matero county board of supervisors... approved a ban on gun shows at the cow palace yesterday. the state owned venue in daly city hosts about five gun shows a year. the gun shows have drawn opposition from the communty and local governments from years... including student protests at recent shows. ( robin )in humboldt county... video of a woman's arrest is spreading on social media... with some viewers questioning how officers handled the situation. take a listen.

going to jail.""get it on video, get it on video, get it on video!">( robin ) the incident started when police pulled over the car... after officers say a juvenile was standing through the sunroof. officers arrested the juvenile... then began questioning the passenger...20- year-old samantha alonso luna. the woman and the officer began arguing over the accuracy of the woman's last name...promting police to pull her out of the car and toss her to the ground. luna was charged with resisting arrest and providing false i.d to an officer. authorities are looking into the incdent. ( robin )the family separation debate has now sparked protests in the bay area... and all over the country. as kron 4's dan kerman explains... in san francisco... opponents of the policy rallied outside federal immigration offices. chanting shut it down, hundreds gathered outside the san francisco office of u.s. immigration & customs enforcement to protest the

(yes) when you walk in there is a sign that says no dogs on the playing field but you brought you dog here to poop..(long pause)i don't want to be on camera right now to talk about it that not on the playing field that's still part of the whole area ma'am i apologize are you with the park service i am not i'm with channel 4 the ironey to this story is right across the street less than a 100 feet away is a dog park . with enough room to run you see the problem is many dog owners have been bringing their dogs to play and other things here.so i as pam a regular watch of kron 4 what's the problem most of the

( robin ) in santa rosa... an arsonsit is on the loose. and a frustrated homeowner... whose property was threatened by one of several fires... is now speaking out. kron4's maureen kelly shows us surveillance video of one of the 13 fires... moments after it started. that was probably one of the scariest things i've ever seen in my life the surveillance camera footage shows kenneth

barber in his backyard armed with a garden hose....after finding flames shooting out from behind the fence at his beachwood avenue home. it's one of the 13 suspicious fires being investigated along the santa rosa creek trail. santa rosa police say evidence so far points to someone or some people....on bikes barber says that he was alerted to the flames by his barking dog and while his wife called 9-1- 1....he took action with a garden hose....and fended off the fire until firefighters arrived on scene..here you can see the damage left behind. the grass behind his fenceline blackened....a spot on the wooden boards, charred. the homeowner is asking anyone who knows anything about who set these fires to come forward to the police and tell them what they know because he says this could've done a lot more damage then just scorch the earth this whole thing would be gone this whole fence with been gone that tree may have caught fire it would've spread across my backyard it would burn my house down could killed me my wife the dog and the cats the multiple suspicious fires are

especially disturbing considering the scars from last year's firestorm is still fresh on everyone's minds. barber says he hasn't been sleeping with the thought of an arsonist on the loose. fact that someone could come here and do this it's just absolutely nuts while this surveillance camera footage did not pick up any signs of who many have set these fires. the santa rosa police department says they are interviewing several people today hoping to find witnesses. a 25-hundred dollar reward has been posted for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case. maureen kelly kron4 news. ( robin )firefighters in the east bay are getting ready for the fourth of july holiday. in antioch.... the contra costa fire protection district conducts its annual live wildfire training exercise. it is no coincidence that the live fire training happens a couple weeks before the 4th of july holiday. unfortunately, that is a busy time for fire crews.

it took only a matter of seconds for a common sparkler to start this blaze... in what is not the worst fire conditions. < in contra costa county it is important to note that all fireworks are illegal. there are no safe and sane fireworks.>( robin ) the fire protection district encourages anyone who wants to experience fireworks on the 4th of july... to do it at one of the áofficial fireworks displaysá... regulated by contra costa fire. ( robin )in san jose... police are searching for a man who stole a puppy... right out of the dog owner's business.this is six week old nyla. she was taken while sleeping inside her owner's, luis gutierrez, warehouse. gutierrez had only had nyla for about a week... before she was stolen this past monday. gutierrez hopes his security cameras will help lead police to capturing the thief.

( robin ) a new study is edding some new light on over-controlling parents... and the results are not good. the article looked at hundreds of children. it found that so-called, helicopter parents, can significantly harm their development. kron four's terisa estacio has more on the study... and what a local expert says, is the takeaway for parents. julie lythcott-haims, author, former dean of stanford "it is validating." author julie lythcott-haims is reacting to a new study out published by the american psychological assocation. the study looked at 422 children over the course of eight years and assessed them at ages 2, 5 and 10. during the study, the research team asked parents

and children to play as they would at home... their findings... "helicopter parenting behavior we saw quote "included parents constantly guiding their child by telling him or her what to play with, how to play with a toty, how to clean up after playtime and being too strick or demanding." the kids reacted in a variety of ways. some became defiant, others were apathetic and some showed frustration." julie. it is like driving, you need to teach so they can grow independent. julie lythcott- haims wrote a book called how to raise an adult... breaking free of the overparenting trap and prepare your kid for success. julie. we want to guide our kids, but we need to raise them and let them grow and become adults. one of the researchers of the study published by the american psychological association said their findings underscore the importance of educating often well intentioned parents about supporting children's automony with handling emotional challenges. the researcher suggested parents can better help their children by encouraging them to about feelings and working through coping strategies such as breathing or even coloring. terisa estacio kron four news

( james ) new this morning ... a person was found dead on the right-hand shoulder of northbound 101 in san jose. chp says the body was found around 1 am this morning ... north of story road. officials have not released how the person died. ( james ) in the east bay... a crash kills one person and sends 3 children to the hospital. it happened last night on concord boulevard near parkside drive in concord. when officers got to the scene... they say the driver in the white car had died. 3 children in the grey s-u-v... all under the age of ten... were hurt. they were taken to children's hospital in oakland. there is no word on their condition. police say the s-u-v t-boned the car. authorities say at this point... they don't know if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. morning... the youngest migrants coming into the u-s with their parents... are now being held in "tender age" shelters. at least 3 shelters have opened in texas... in response to the trump administration's zero- tolerance enforcement policy... that separates children from their parents who come into the country illegally. the shelters serve the needs of children under the age of 5. meanwhile... president trump spoke with republican lawmakers on capitol hill last night... trying to rally g-o-p lawmakers on immigration. lawmakers are expected to vote on a new immigration bill this week. ( darya ) invaka trump is talking to her father about stopping the separation of children from their parents at the border. the first daughter and mother also spoke to house majority leader kevin mccarthy and senator susan collins about the issue. so far... the president has refused to change his policy. instead... he's insisting congress reform immigration laws. change. and they made their voices heard last night... while homeland security secretary kirstjen nielsen was having dinner at a mexican restaurant in washington, dc.( james ) the the democratic socialists of america shared this video on facebook. the group repeatedly yelled at the secretary until she left the restaurant. ( james ) hundreds gathered outside the san francisco ice office to protest the trump administration's zero tolerance policy. the protesters had some signs comparing ice to nazi soldiers. some of the protesters say they had family members who were refugees during world war two or were

locked in japanes internment camps. the protests also had several children who participated. ( james ) more protests are scheduled for el cerrito ... oakland ... and another one in san francisco in the coming days. ( james ) the name of the officer who shot a man in the back in san francisco's north beach neighborhood has been released. officer joshua cabillo was one of several officers who approached four men on june 9th... for having an container of alcohol. when one of the men started to run away... officer cabillo opened fire. he said the man had a gun... which was later found at the scene. oliver bacenas was shot in the back. he remains in the hospital. ( darya ) in the east bay... police are looking for 2 men who stole 45-thousand dollars in

merchandise from an a-t-and-t store. martinez police say these two men walked into the store monday night. the thieves claimed they had a gun... and forced the employee to the back of the store. when customers started to walk in... one of the men took the employee's shirt... and pretended to work at the store. when the customers left... so did the thieves. along with the merchandise... they also got away with 170- dollars in cash. mccarthy and senator susan collins about the issue. so far... the president has refused to change his policy. instead... he's insisting congress reform immigration laws. office to protest the trump administration's zero tolerance policy. the protesters had some signs comparing ice to nazi soldiers. some of the protesters say they had family members who were refugees dung world war two or were locked in japanes internment camps. the protests also had several children who participated. ( james ) the name of the officer who shot a man in the back in san francisco's north beach neighborhood has been released. officer joshua cabillo was one of several officers who approached four men on june 9th... for having an container of alcohol. when one of the men started to run away... officer cabillo opened fire. he said the

man had a gun... which was later found at the scene. oliver bacenas was shot in the back. he remains in the hospital. ( darya ) in the east bay... police are looking for 2 men who stole 45-thousand dollars in merchandise from an a-t-and-t store. martinez police say these two men walked into the store monday night. the thieves claimed they had a gun... and forced the employee to the back of the store. when customers started to walk in... one of the men took the employee's shirt... and pretended to work at the store. when the customers left... so did the thieves. along with the merchandise... they also got away with 170- dollars in cash. never ends in california... and now staffing levels are changing to reflect that. ( darya ) nearly a year after the northbay firestorm caused major dustruction.. victims have a familiar face backing them as they take on p-g-and-e. erin brockovich took on p-g-and-e back in the 90's.. successfully suing the company. last night she met with some of the north bay fire victims. they had a chance to ask her questions directly in the intimate setting at teamsters hall in santa rosa. and that having brockovich in their corner the fire victims say brings optimism in this difficult time.

( james ) a man whose property was threatened by several fires in santa rosa is speaking out. kron4's maureen kelly shows us surveillance video and why investigators think it was arson. that was probably one of the scariest things i've ever seen in my life the surveillance camera footage shows kenneth barber in his backyard armed with a garden hose....after finding flames shooting out from behind the fence at his beachwood avenue home. it's one of the 13 suspicious fires being investigated along the santa rosa creek trail. santa rosa police say evidence so far points to someone or some people....on bikes barber says that he was alerted to the flames by his barking dog and while his wife called 9-1- 1....he took action with a garden hose....and fended off the fire until firefighters arrived on scene..here you can see the damage left behind. the grass behind his fenceline blackened....a spot on the wooden boards, charred. the

homeowner is asking anyone who knows anything about who set these fires to come forward to the police and tell them what they know because he says this could've done a lot more damage then just scorch the earth this whole thing would be gone this whole fence with been gone that tree may have caught fire it would've spread across my backyard it would burn my house down could killed me my wife the dog and the cats the multiple suspicious fires are especially disturbing considering the scars from last year's firestorm is still fresh on everyone's minds. barber says he hasn't been sleeping with the thought of an arsonist on the loose. fact that someone could come here and do this it's just absolutely nuts while this surveillance camera footage did not pick up any signs of who many have set these fires. the santa rosa police department says they are interviewing several people today hoping to find witnesses. a 25-hundred dollar reward has been posted for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case. maureen kelly kron4 news.

( darya ) whenever there is a dog problem in parks... the complaint from some dog owners can be... that there are not any dog parks nearby. but in this case... there was one right across the street. stanley roberts reports in this edition of people behaving badly. so you're sitting at the park in san francisco lets say rossi swimming pool and playground in the inner richmond nats: ambiance then suddenly a huge orange furry dog appears. nats: ambiance no the dog is not on a leash it's just walking with the owner though the park, some of you might not see a problem with that but how about this dog owner with dog on a leash as the dog does what dogs do
