first lady melania trump made a surprise visit to the u-s mexico border in mcallen texas today. there she got a first hand look at the crisis affecting undocumented immigrant families. but in doing so - she also created some controversy because of the message on her jacket. good evening i'm vicki liviakis. facility for their hard work, compassion and kindness but also bringing some controversy to texas by traveling in a jacket that reads 'i don't really care do u?' the first lady's spokesperson saying "it's a jacket. there was no hidden message."in the meantime -- thousands of children remain separated from their parents.as the immigration controvery also playing out in congress. representatives focused on two bills that would overhaul the immigration system.sot paul ryan"these are good ideas that are ultimately going to show a way forward."former homes -- like this one have been converted into federal facilities to house the kids. sot trump: "frankly we have to house them and should be taking good care of them and then we should return them back home." although president

trump signed an executive order to keep families together while detained-- we still don't know when parents and children who have already been separated will be reunited.in mcallen, texas -- i'm camila bernal. (vicki) more now on that controversial cket the first lady wore today... the $39-dollar zara jacket had white graffiti lettering on the back reading "i really don't care. do u?" melania trump wasn't wearing the jacket when she landed in mcallen, texas to tour the facility. but she put it on again as she deplaned back at andrews air force base after the trip. her team insisted the jacket didn't have any hidden message.

president donald trump followed up on twitter later saying the jacket quote "refers to the fake news media" and that the first lady "no longer cares." (grant) and senator dianne feinstein released a statement today on the president's executive order. it reads in part... "we're not a country that rips nursing babies from their mothers. and we're not a country that puts dozens of children in cages with thin mats and aluminum blankets." "yesterday i believed the president finally recognized that his policy was untenable and unsustainable. however, upon reading the language of the executive order as well as the comments from his agencies, i am deeply concerned to learn that the humanitarian crisis is not over." (vicki) happening tomorrow: some local lawmakers are heading to the u-s border. senator kamala harris is heading down to san diego to the border in otay mesa. congresswomen anna eshoo and jackie speier are also heading to the texas mexico border tomorrow and visiting the detention center in mcallen where children are being held. happened in broad daylight yesterday...not far from san francisco's pier 39. kron4's maureen kelly explains how the victim was able to get away. (pkgpolice say the brazen attack happened here as the victim was walking home, headed westbound on bay street just past kearny.it was 430 in the afternoon wednesday....w hen the 21 one year female victim was approached by the male suspect who got out a parked sedan. police say the stranger demanded the woman come with him, and threatened to kill her if she didn't comply. at first she backed away, but then he pulled out a handgun so she got in the car. he drove off.....but a few blocks away on the corner of stockton and francisco his phone buzzed. he stopped the car....and she got out ran home and called for help. this area is just blocks away from the popular tourist attraction pier 39. some who live and work around here are rattled by this crime. it's pretty scary that happened on our street and i work right here and i walked on the street all the time so it's pretty scary that it happened just in broad daylight it is safe it is safe i've been here 40 years and i know there are some bad people there are some bad people in the bay area i'm just glad she was able i'm just glad she was able to get away from the bad guy but others say this

street....which is bordered by the north point water pollution control plant on both sides of the street is a magnet for crime....since there is every little interface between the municipal buildings and the sidewalks. every day when i walk at lunchtime when there's 4five piles of glass where people have broken into cars it's amazing here there's homeless people that live over there you see them coming with backpacks yo you wonder what the hell they're caring and people are parked here so i don't look like their uber drivers some of them do look kind of shady so this is a funny type neighborhood they need more police in here police says is encouraging anyone with information on this crime to call or text their anonymous tip line....that information has been posted to our website, kron4-dot com. maureen kelly kron4 news. angeles...and davis handled complaints. the report released today... found some people accused of misconduct...continued to sexually harass people after they were disciplined ineffectively. they also found the u.c. system is slower to disciple faculty and staff. u.c. president janet napolitano says the system is working to improve it's complaint process. (grant) in the east bay tonight... police have arrested two men in connection to a deadly stabbing in san leandro. the stabbing happened on tuesday night at the washington plaza shopping center on east 14th street. police say four men got into a fight-- one of the men was stabbed and killed. another man is in critical condition. two 23-year- old men were arrested at their homes in alameda and oakland yesterday. police have not yet said a motive for the fight. (grant) a big story we're tracking. anti-gay flyers posted on the peninsula have people outraged....as the bay area celebrates pride week. this is happening in palo alto. the flyers were posted at several different locations including the

library and public parks. the flyer has a picture showing a display of pride-themed books along with a man and three children. it then says... "part of what a father does is to protect his children...someone is trying to seduce your kids sexually...this is happening here, now." it then says the books are poison for children. we talked to people in the area...who say they aren't taking these flyers seriously.

sure everyone has a safe pride weekend. people who plan to attend can text a number to receive emergency alerts. just text "pride-s-f" to 888-777 to receive those alerts. city officials are also asking people participating in the festivities to always be aware of their surroundings. (vicki) it's pride week in san francisco... and, the annual pride parade hits the streets this sunday. kron four's philippe djegal takes a look backstage as crews put the final touches on the floats. (philippe) six-weeks ago... at pier 54 in san francisco... crews began building the floats that will travel down market street for sunday's annual pride parade. the work has been ratcheted up the last three weeks. stephanie mufson/master float builder- "this is always the best part -- really seeing all of our hard work come to fruition." master float builder stephanie mufson says she's working with a crew of 35 to build 35 floats. stephanie mufson/master float builder- "we basically start with a flat bed and we build up from there. so, we have

(tele vo) she is gone but the world will not soon forget "koko," the gorilla whose mastering of sign language and other amazing feats touched millions of lives around the world. (terisa estacio reporting, santa rosa, pge announcement) here in santa rosa, in the fountaingrove neighborhood that saw such widespread devastation, there was swift reaction to that big pge announcment. robert heidingsfelder,lost home in tubbs fire. the need to take responsibility, so many loss so much. my home, everything is gone. we built it 13 years ago, and everything is gone. robert heidingsfelder was out clearing dead olive trees at his home thursday. he says it has been a rough several months. he, his wife and teenage daughter barely made it out of their neighborhod the night of the fire. a resident close by died. heidingsfelder. i miss so much, it will take years to rebuildin announcing that they intended to record an estimated 2.5 billion dollar loss for the wildfires... pge also added quote "years of drought, extreme heat and 129 million dead trees have created a new normal for our state that requires comprehensive new solutions." terisa estacio, another resident who did not want to go on camera, had this to say, saying she hopes pge does not pass the buck and put the loss

(vicki ) locked gates and handout videos.protests are growing over whereabouts of the thousands of children suspected of trying to enter the country illegally. president trump's executive order opens a path for more than two=thousand children separated from their families in recent weeks,(grant) and that's only a fraction of the kids who are housed in dozens of facilities around the country.... some of those camps are filled beyond capacity. they are experiencing mental health challenges and trauma because of the separation. there's also physical health challenges new york city's bill de blasio part of a group of mayors from across the country allowed into a tent city for children separated from their families. for the public, the only

"some have lice some have bed bugs chicken pox all sorts of contagious situations."across the united states, the federal government is responsible for the care of more than 11=thousand migrant children in about 100 shelters.children taken from their parents at the southern u-s border are being placed in detention centers in at least 17 states as far away as michigan and virginia new york mayor deblasio says more than 2=hundred children are being held in the middle of manhattan. "we had gotten no notification from the u.s. government that children were being sent there from 2,000 miles away. i went to visit a classroom. about 30 or 40 young children from guatemala, separated from their mothers or parents trying to make sense of the to make sense of this situation. it's appalling."according to health and human services, the vast majority of the children coming across the border, are unaccompanied. "their parents have sent them here or they've come of their own volition to the u.s.dhs secretary kirsten neilsen says some of the child detainees may be criminals. they're already recruited into a gang because that was the

only way they could survive the travel. so this is not only a humanitarian issue from that perspective but we have what we just said - 10 known suspected terrors that we know of trying to travel here a day - as you say we see terrorist propaganda of how to bring weapons across our border. (catherine) congresswoman eshoo certainly isn't alone infinding the plight of the children distressing. but for her - the issue resonates on a very personal level. she talked to us by phone earlier... eshoo says her own mother came through ellis island as a young girl...and was separated for a time from 'her' mother.. rep. eshoo - she was traumatized the rest of her life by that. she died at over 90. and i know that two nights before she died she was still crying out in the middle of the night for her mother.i

take a look at the before and after. the billboard in emeryville originally read "we make junk disappear"... it was an advertisement for 1-800-junk. it was changed to say "we make kids disappear"- ice. the group responsible is known for changing billboards. it was also behind the naked donald trump statue that popped up in several cities across the countries--a couple years ago including san francisco. .. (grant) a scam alert in walnut creek. police are warning residents of an uptick in recent phone scams from people saying they're from the i-r-s and f-b-i. officers say in almost every case-- the caller tells the victim they owe money-- or there is a warrant out for their arrest. the callers will also request gift cards as a payment. officers are reminding people these calls are never legitimate and never give your personal banking information over the phone. (vicki) in the south bay. a man is recovering tonight... after his car fell off a cliff and into a tree.

the incident happened last night in the santa cruz mountains. there a 60- year-old driver plunged into a nearly 50 foot embankment near locust and aldercroft heights authorities say the driver is lucky to be alive...and that the tree actually saved his life...by helping break the long fall. he was rushed to the hospital with moderate injuries.... and has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. online businesses and startups will have the burden of complying with thousands of different tax codes around the countrysteve del biancothe supreme court has upended the apple cart and dumped the apples all over main street america.alexandra limon the supreme court justices sided with south dakota ruling the state should be able to require online retailers to collect state sales taxes even if the business doesnt have a physical presence in that state saying the previous rules were outdated in an e- commerce era.those previous rules were based on a previous supreme court case senator heitkamp litigated for north dakota.sen. heidi heitkampwe expect that this will be billions of dollars of revenue back to the states.senator heitkamp argues the decision will actually benefit small businesses, especially brick and mortar stores on main street.sen. heidi heitkampthey provide that direct employment in those communities, they deserve to have a level playing field.this supreme court case stemmed from a south dakota law that applies to businesses doing more than 100-thousand dollars in business or more than 200 transactions in their state. but the supreme court decision applies nationwide. in washington alexandra limon.

summer... and while warm weather means fun outside.... it can also mean more dangers for kids. the consumer safety group "world against toys causing harm," or "watch" has released its list of top ten "summer safety traps." topping the list - water balloon slingshots, which the group says have the potential to cause face or eye injury. lawn darts -- even though they are blunted - were number two on the list. the third most dangerous item listed -- low-riding wheeled toys, such as plastic tricycles. the list also included backyard pools, a-t-v's, and bounce houses.
