(philippe) late thursday night through friday morning... the california highway patrol and the california department of transportation will be installing and testing shotspotter sensors at undisclosed parts of highway four, insterstate 80 and other freeways in contra costa county. this is one component of the freeway security network law enforcement has been putting together along troubled stretches of east bay freeways. dan seaman/chp- "we can consider it a pilot project only because this has not been done before on the freeway system. so, we're treading new grounds here with um, the shot spotter technology, um, as

well as the entire freeway security network." since november 20-15... the c-h-p says 136 shootings have been reported on all bay area freeways. 44 of those happened in contra costa county -- mostly on highway four and interstate 80.dan mcelhinney/caltrans- "the freeway security network, overall, is going to be a system that goes to antioch to hercules. hercules to san pablo." the shotspotter technology allows law enforcement to determine if shots were actually fired in an area... with an opportunity to respond within seconds.mary know/da's office- "and, this system is integrated so that when shotspotter detects shots fired up on the freeway, shotspotter actually, um, moves the pentilate zoom cameras in the direction of the gunfire, so that we basically have eyes on the freeway at the time of the shooting." cameras and license plate readers are already up and running on highway four from antioch to pittsburg, in addition to the shotspotter sensors being installed. the remaining cameras and plate readers planned for the other parts of the freeways are scheduled to be complete by the end of the year. in contra costa county, philippe djegal, kron four news.
