( robin )a cold case homicide investigation with a bizarre ending. the main suspect in a ritualistic killing at stanford university back in 19-74 .... apparently committed suicide. this - as sheriff's deputies were closing in on him at a san jose motel. kron 4's gabe slate breaks down the cold case .... and what led investigators to their conclusion 44- years later. in 1974 arlis perry was brutally sexually assaulted and murdered in the back of the stanford memorial church. no one was ever convicted of

year old died following a ton- sillectomy. eventually the family relocated with jahi in new jersey. that's where she's been kept on life support in a state that accomodates religions that don't recognize brain death. ( robin )back here at home... oakland police are searching for a shooter ... after a man was killed and three others injured. it happened in east oakland wednesday evening around five-30... on macarthur boulevard near 89th avenue. officers found four people who had been shot... one was pronounced dead at the scene. the victim's name has not been publicly released. police are still investigating the cause of the shooting. ( robin )also in the east bay... crews contained a large grass fire thursday evening. the three- alarm blaze was seen burning off of interstate 7-80.. near columbus parkway and benicia state park. officials are urging people to use caution in the area near columbus parkway and benicia state park. so far no reports of any injuries or structures damaged. loved ones that died in a shooting in annapolis, maryland. thursday afternoon, news of a mass shooting inside a newsroom spread across the nation. five are died... and several others are injured from the shooting... the suspect now in custody. reporter omar jimenez has the latest details on what police are calling... a targeted attack. nats: "several shots have been fired. possible shotgun. at least ten shots heard." authorities responded to a shooting at the offices of a local newspaper.steve schuh/anne arundel county executive: "there's been a terrible tragedy here in anne arundel county. there was an active shooter incident. five people are dead, several more are wounded and in the care of the anne arundel medical center. the shooter is in our custody and is being interrogated as we speak."the gunman opened fire inside the capital gazette's newsroom. multiple people were killed in the gunfire -- several others were injured.police responded quickly -- steve schuh/anne arundel county executive: "they were on the scene in about sixty seconds, but

multiple people get shot .. while you're under your desk and then hear the gunman reload." the capital gazette is one of the nation's oldest newspapers.. it was founded by british journalist william parks back in 17-27 as the maryland gazette. one of the reporters explained.. among the main goals of the newsroom is to expose corruption .. and bring to light the inner workings of government. the annapolis police and fire departments had just held a joint active shooter training at the newspaper last friday .. on june 22nd. ( robin )this morning we're learning the names of those the five employees who died in yesterday's tragic shooting. their names are gerald fichman, john mc-namara, rebecca smith, robert hiaasen and wendi winters. all worked for the paper in different roles ... including writer, editor and columnist. ( robin )president trump tweeted his condolences saying in part.. my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. thank you to all of the first responders who are currently on the scene.

( robin )new information this morning about a plane crash in arizona... responsible for taking the life of a north bay woman. medical examiners say the pilot had cocaine in his system. the plane crashed and burst into flames on a golf course near scottsdale airport almost two months ago. all six people on board died in the crash including twenty-three-year-old mariah coogan, from forestville in sonoma county. a preliminary report by the the national transportation safety board says said surveillance video showed the plane struggled to gain altitude on departure. ntsb's final report won't be released until next year. ( robin )"shot-spotter" sensors have been installed on city streets in the past... but contra costa officials will soon be adding them to

east bay freeways. since november 20-15... the c-h-p says 136 shootings have been reported on all bay area freeways. 44 of those happened in contra costa county -- mostly on highway four and interstate 80. the shot-spotter technology allows law enforcement to determine if shots were actually fired in an area... with an opportunity to respond within seconds.

( robin )in the east bay... hundreds gathered outside a shopping plaza in el cerrito... speaking out against president trump's zero tolerance policy at the u-s border. protestors have been holding these rallies throughout contra costa county for the past few weeks. many people who were there say... they don't know anyone personally affected by the matter... but came to show support for families who were separated at the u-s mexico border.

trying to come into our county and seeking asylum... and this administration zero tolerance policy is breaking up families. >( robin )right now more than two-thousand children are still seperated from their parents... since the trump white house's "zero tolerance" policy started in early may. ( robin )a c-h-p officer and the suspect he was chasing, both sustained minor injuries... after a short pursuit in san leandro thursday. kron 4's maureen kelly reports, the suspect was allegedly fleeing officers after being spotted engaging in what the c-h-p calls sideshow activity. the marks left behind from squealing tires can still be seen on the road here at the intersection of 167th avenue and los banos in unincorporate d san leandro. the chp says they were called to the scene by reports of what they are calling sideshow activity just before 430 am. a responding patrol unit witnessed the reckless driving first hand.

( robin )white supremecist fliers are once again been spotted all over the bay area. recent reports indicate, the propaganda campaigns have actually been ramping up all over the country. the anti - defamation league said, it documented nearly 300- cases of white supremacist fliers and other racist, anti-semitic and islamophobic material .... on campuses from september through may. that is up 77- percent from the previous year. they say that one group... who identifies as europa... was responsible for nearly half of those incidents. ( robin ) in lake county... firefighters are finally getting the upper hand on the pawnee fire. here is a look at the latest numbers. the fire has burned almost 14-thousand acres. it is now 50- percent contained. evacuation orders have been lifted in the spring valley community and the double eagle ranch area. but orders are still in effect for the walker ridge and indian valley reservoir areas. ( robin )right now firefighters are trying to work quickly... because triple- digit temperatures and high winds coming this weekend. kron 4's terisa estacio reports. this is all that is left of these homes on wolfe creek road... 22 homes in total were

destroyed when the pawnee fire raced through the area. a collapsed fire place, melted motor home, a business wiped out... just some of the few items recognizable. during the day, crews focused on making progress in putting this fire out completely. helicopters lifted bundles to those working in the heart of the containtment zone. calfire spokesperson. we are taken equipment in that will help them most efficiently work on the fire. crews will be back there spending the nigth and working to make sure the fire is out. fire fighters have a small window right now to get work done before the weather changes. the weather is expected to change with more winds and hot temperatures. for some spring valley residents, they are hoping the worse is behind everyone... sandy clark, spring valley pantry. i am so glad of all the work they are doing. are you worried about the weather change, yeah...

highway last night. kron4's will tran is live in benicia this morning. san francisco bay area residents face increased danger from wildfires and heat- related illnesses friday and saturday as the weather gets hot and windier, according to the national weather service. temperatures, especially in interior locations, will begin to rise friday and soar to near 100 degrees, rising even more saturday with some inland locations possibly reach 105. conditions ripe for wildfires will arise friday afternoon and last until saturday afternoon for the east bay hills and north bay mountains. weather officials said any fires that spark have the potential to spread. cooler temperatures are expected for sunday and monday.

( james ) in the east bay... police in anitoch have arrested two men connected toa violent assault in may. marcos torres and adrian nevarez have been charged with attempted murder following an attack in the 4100 block of lone tree way. police detereminded the victim was attacked by five norteno gang members. police also located an illegal assault rifle and several hand guns at the home of marcos torres. one suspect is still outstanding.. pictured

( james ) the east bay teen at the center of a medical and religious debate over brain death has died after surgery. jahi mcmath's mother says her daughter died from excessive bleeding and liver failure. mcmath has been in a unresponsive state since december 2013... she was declared brain dead following complications when her tonsils were taken out. she was 13 at the time. her family then moved to new jersey... where she was kept on life support. lake county now have the upper hand on the pawnee fire. the almost 14-thousand acre fire is now 50-percent contained. we are expecting that number to go up once we get an update from cal fire. evacuation orders have been lifted in the spring valley community and the double eagle ranch area. but orders are still in effect for the walker ridge and indian valley reservoir areas. ( james ) but firefighters may run into some trouble this weekend. triple-digit temperatures and high winds are expected to return this weekend. kron 4's terisa estacio has more on the firefighting efforts... and a

( darya ) p-g-and-e is taking measures to prevent any fires from sparking. in the north bay... they're using helicopters to spot dead and dying trees. the helicopters will fly as low as 200 to 300 hundred feet above power lines to spot any dangers. p-g-and-e has increased patrols in high fire risk areas to as many as four a year.. cal fire has blamed the company for causing the deadly north bay fires... saying it failed to clear debris from power lines. investigation comes to an end.... after the suspect kills himself. the santa clara county sheriffs office says 72-year-old steve crawford shot himself yesterday morning... as detectives approached his san jose apartment. crawford was suspected in the sexual assault and murder of 19- year-old arlis perry... who was found inside stanford university's chapel with an icepick in the back of her head. investigators say d-n-a recently linked crawford to the crime. ( james ) new this morning... santa rosa police have arrested a man for having a firearm at franklin park. witnesses say they heard a popping sound. when police got to the park, they say benjamin smoody was walking around pointing the weapon at bystanders. smoody did comply with police. officers found a flare gun in smoody's possession. police learned smoody caused a disturbance at a near-by pre-school prior to the park... no children were

( james ) in the north bay.. thousands of dollars of kitchen equipment that was used to feed fire victims was stolen. the salvation army says they now won't be able to offer disaster victims much help. on wednesday morning workers showed up to find a normally locked truck door wide open and the kitchen equipment and food inside gone. the salvation army says an employee failed to properly secrure the gates.

under the "consumer privacy act"... companies like facebook and google must disclose what personal data they've collected... why... and who it was given to. it also prevents tech companies from collecting any data on uses under 16 years old. the new law goes into effect january 1st, 2020. ( darya ) tainted canal water appears to be the source of a nationwide e-coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce. 5 people died... and 200 more got sick. the outbreak was traced to lettuce grown in yuma, arizona. now... health officials say the same

news is taking part in a bay area wide media project to spotlight the homeless issue in our communities. this morning... we're looking at how tuff sheds are getting people off the street in oakland. this tuff shed cabin camp opened in december of 2017. off 6th and castro. people who once lived in tent encampments ... now call the tuff sheds home. but they can only stay for six months, and the entire time they have assistance to find work and get permanent housing. several former residents have gotten jobs and moved on.
