i'm april kennedy and i'm an arborist with pg&e in the sierras. since the onset of the drought, more than 129 million trees have died in california. pg&e prunes and removes over a million trees every year to ensure that hazardous trees can't impact power lines. and since the onset of the drought we've doubled our efforts. i grew up in the forests out in this area and honestly it's heartbreaking to see all these trees dying. what guides me is ensuring that the public is going to be safer and that these forests can be sustained and enjoyed by the community in the future. ( lydia ) we now know what caused a big grass fire in concord on friday. investigators believe that the fire was likely caused by a car backfiring.. kron 4's hermela aregawi spoke to fire officials who say the fire danger is not over. grassy areas like this one and some public parks in the concord area are closed..as firefighters work to make sure the fire stays out using equipment to manipulate the ground.. and put down some barrierssteve aubert/contra costa county fire deptwhat
4:20 am
they will do, and they'll come in and they'll take sections of land and they put the dozer and we actually push the dirt and dry grass all the way up and bring it back down to fresh dirt.we generally try to go for 30 foot firebreaks when we create those. that way when the fire does burn up to that line that's pretty much where it stops. in the high winds situation like we were discussing, that;s where it becomes a little trickier. you can make a very large firebreak but those embers will still continue to fly fruther down the linemeanwhile officials are reminding people to take some exra precautions to prevent a fire. they say.. don't smoke in grassy areas.. don't light anything in public open spaces. don't throw your cigarettes out of your vehicle and don't drive on dry grass. steve aubert/contra costa county fire depttypically we have high heat, high winds, and very low humidity. those are the perfect condition that get a fire going greatly, very large, very quick. so that's where you really need to start taking precautions. such as if you are gonna bate your property, mow a lawn, anything along those lines that involves that dry grass, nothing done after 10 oclock in the morning. that's when the moisture content is pretty much evaporated for the rest of the day, and there's nothing left to help you actually protect yourself. (hermela aregawi)firefighters say.. it's also important for people to call in a fire quickly.they say.. they are

ready to put flames out as quickly as possible.they tell us that approach is what kept friday's fire from getting to houses.reporting in concord hermela aregawi kron 4 news ( lydia ) still ahead on the kron four morning news... at 4:30 ...the growing concerns over the air quality in parts of the bay area this morning. ( lydia ) drivers in one south bay city seem to be having a problem stopping at red lights. kron 4's stanley roberts explains in this edition of people behaving badly. (who are you?) who are you? (who are you to be filming people here), it's a public street (yea so.) so i can publicly film, (really) yea enjoy it thank you you too while i'm recording in public ..here is some information that will save you the headache of getting a ticket for running a red light see this black and white sign which reads stop here on red . it's pretty much self explanatory but just in case its still confusing ill try to dumb it downnats: ambiance i'm just outside the moutain view caltrain station on castro street and there are two sets of lights one set before the tracks and one set behind the tracks when the light turns red everyone must stop here at this limit line and wait for the light to turn
4:42 am
green easier said than done. nats: ambiance because many drivers roll right past the first set of red lights and stop at the second set . the problem with that is when you do that you are running the red light nats: ambiancein other cases drivers stop at the limit line only to drive forward to the second set again that is considered running the red light whether in a car or on a bicycle nats: ambiance all day every day you will see drivers run the red risking 400 run the red risking 400 dollar ticket and point you your driving record the reason for this is simple, it's to prevent people from stopping on the caltrain tracks and potentially getting hit by a train nats: ambiance and even with a green light drivers need to keep clear of the tracks all to often i watch drivers get stuck on the tracks or have to back up when if they stayed behind the stop here on red sign they would put themselves in a sticky situation. if driver would pull there head out there

kron 4's maureen kelly has the story. this beautiful slice of california coast is known as tunitas creek beach...and in the near futurue it will become a county park. up until recently it was surrounded by private property and was very difficult to access. i think there's a rope ladder apparently people driving atvs down the creek, none of it safe none of us legal it's all bad for the environment and it's dangerous but people did it....and sometimes trashed it with impunity since it wasn't being patrolled by rangers. they leave everything, tents coolers, barbecues we've had camp outs of over four and 500 people. and of course i'll remind you there's no restroom facilities out here so there's that . so that environmentally is a catastrophe into in addition to everyone scrambling up and down what are pretty permeable clips and through the creek corredor it was just getting to a point where the locals felt like this is a crisis and you know what happens the tide comes in and takes all that trash right out to the ocean oceanthe peninsula open space trust purchased the 58 acres around the beach for 5 million dollars . and this week the governor set aside another 5 million in the state budget to help make it so the public can come down safely and enjoy it. an emergency access road has been already been created so rangers can patrol the beach. but it will be some time before it will ready as a destination.. we said at

least three years and that would be to get some basic parking, facilities in a path to the beachabout a mile and a half to the north is martin's beach. tech billionaire vinod khosla bought the surrounding land and closed off the road that the public has used for generations. the surfrider foundation sued him and won. khosla wants to take it to the supreme court. but now state senator jerry hill has authored a budget rider which includes a million dollars to go into a fund and gives the state land commission the right to use that money, plus an another million being kicked in by san mateo county, to buy the road....or use eminent domain to take it. you can have a private beach you can't buy a beach close it off and keep the public from enjoying it. if that were the case we'd have no access since last year khosla has re-opened the gate....but regulars here say it's closed more often than not. senator hill says if the state land commission takes action, it could be permentaly open to the public in about a year. maureen kelly kron4 news kron4 news maureen kelly kron4 news
