master tenant derrick almena will be sentenced to nine years in prison... and party promoter max harris will be sentneced to six. both men are expected to serve less than half that amount of time behind bars. good evening i'm vicki liviakis.(catherine) and i'm catherine heenan in for grant lodes. by agreeing to the deal - the defendants avoided going to trial and potential life sentences. almenna and harris were facing 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter for the 2016 fire... in an illegally converted warehouse. these are the faces of the partygoers who were killed when the flames broke out during a dance party. kron 4's terisa estacio was in the oakland courtroom today. she joins us live with reaction from the parents of some of those victims. terisa? david gregory, victims father. it is not enough. for the family members who lost loved ones in the ghost ship fire, this was a very difficult day for several reasons. for one,

really really quickly(carmen brito, ghostship fire survivor)"it was a window of five minutes between the fire happening and you just didn't get out."on the night of friday december second 2016. investigators say around 50 people were in the oakland warehouse known as the ghost ship.... when a fire began on the first floorpartygoers upstairs had no warning and then it was too late.36 people died.(atf) this is the highest number of fire fatalities in 13 years,the warehouse was packed with wood and textile artworks.the cocktail of combustibles went up like a torch.(hiatt crying) " just doesn't seem that's a fire that's survivable."the makeshift stairs to the second level burned before most people could escape.it appears as if the male was trying to protect the female and had her in like a hugging position these young people were texting their families that they loved them or that they were going to die.in the hours that followed, families and friends waited for word. (vincent vines) i tried to call my friend and i'm not getting no answer. everything is going straight to voicemail as more and more bodies were identified, the victims' parents tried to come to grips with their loss.come and get closure ourselves.there's a lot of things i wish i could have said to him that now i'll never be able to. six months after the fire: criminal charges are filed.

burning in yolo county.. and napa county-- near lake berryessa. so far it's burned 70-thousand acres and is just five-percent contained. more than 900 buildings are threatened tonight... and at least 25-hundred people have been told to leave their homes. three of those areas under evacuation advisories are in napa county. kron 4's will tran reports. .. .. thousands of firefighters are thousands of thousands of firefighters are struggling to contain a massive wildfire in rural northern california.the california department of forestry and fire protection said tuesday that the blaze surging through sparsely populated areas northwest of sacramento has grown to 109 bui largely out of control. officials say about 300 people have been ordered to flee and more than 700 buildings are threatened in the area that's home to cattle and horse ranches.cal fire says more than 2,000 firefighters are battling the fast-growing blaze fueled by gusty winds.

(catherine) happening now ... people are camping in front of the ice building in san francisco ... in protest of immigration policies. lydia pantazas talked to some of them about the message they're trying to get across. they've pitched tents and put up a barbed wire fence.they're part of a nationwide movement called occupy ice.right now they're blocking the entrance that ice agents use to transport people who are detained.this protest started yesterday at 3pm with a rally. after the rally ended people stayed here to block the entrance.the protesters are speaking out against the separation of immigrant families.they're also asking for the abolishment of the federal immigration and customs enforcement agency.we asked one of the protesters about how this protest started.

as it mopped up after a small fire here off day road near gilroy this afternoon, this calfire crew lingered to study the terrain. the fire burned from the top of the hill down to the road rather than the other way around, suggesting something other than a backfire or tossed cigarette was the cause. investigators did not find any proof of illegal fireworks but the incident is suspicious nonetheless and remains under investigation. asst. chief mike marcucci/calfire "....we have started our two day enforcement today, our teams are out and about patrolling and letting folks know where and when they can have fireworks...."gilroy is the only place in santa clara county where legal, safe and sane fireworks are permitted. they're not supposed to be purchased by non-residents or taken outside the city limits. for it's part, calfireis on high alert for all fireworks with every available firefighter on duty over the

(vicki) as many people get ready to celebrate the 4th of july holiday... one man is reminding people of the dangers of personal fireworks. he lost one eye in a fireworks accident. sarah gisriel reports. it happened in a flash. "i had my hands on my face and when i put my hands away, i could see the blood," a standard 4th of july celebration turned bloody. "i was about 40 feet away from where it was. i wasn't real close to it, and what happened was, it was a two inch mortar and it tubing turned into shrapnel, co. "they have 3-inch, 4-inch, 6- inch, they go about as big as 8-inch, which is about the size of a cantaloupe, basically, so this was just one of your smaller mortars, but an explosion in a confined space in a tube like that, it

doesn't matter," he was in the hospital within the hour, but it was too late. he lost his eye and now has a prosthetic, although he still maintains movement in the muscle. "technology has come a long way. i'm a barber, you know, and most of the people don't even know i have a prosthetic eye," you would think that his experiences have scarred him from celebrating the fourth of july forever, but. "i'm fine with them. i just don't get too close to them," however, he does have serious recommendations. he believes simple protections could have saved his eye. "i would recommend anyone that is even close to fireworks be wearing even like sunglasses, maybe not safety glasses, but some sort of eyewear,"he also recommends staying away from alcohol while lighting fireworks, and handing the reigns over to someone with experience. tonight... the trump administration is planning to rescind a set of obama-era policies that promoted the use of race in college admissions. it comes as the department of justice investigates whether harvard university discriminates against asian-americans in its admissions process. the trump administration is specifically rescinding documents that laid out recommendations and guidelines for schools aiming to promote diversity. the trump administration says the rules are not legal and they violate the supreme court precedent on affirmative action. 4 your health tonight.... officials are warning people about fish pedicures after a report came out today saying a woman's toenails fell off. fish pedicures involve putting your feet in a tub of water filled with tiny fish called "garra rufa" -- that will eat dead human skin. but according to the new report, the patient noticed her toenails shedding after the pedicure. the report says the woman had no other medical history that could be linked to her

(vicki) a dog proves that he really is man's best friend. ...or should we say - woman's best friend? todd the canine saw a threat and jumped into action. seth pines reports. friday morning paula godwin took her two dogs copper sevent street and carefree hi snake"eveg s perfect like there were no hikers there maybe one or two." it turns out they weren't as alone as they thought. because nearby there was something coiled up in the grass. paula

godwin/dog attacked by snake "he was so camouflaged." godwin is an arizona native so she knows the dangers of hiking and is vigilant in the desert. but this time her six month old golden retriever provided the extra pair of watchful eyes.paula godwin/dog attacked by snake"looked down at my foot to see why todd bolted sorta to see what was by my leg. that's when i heard the rattle."just before the snake could strike todd the hero dog put himself between the paula. it got him right in the face. paula godwin/dog attacked by snake"poor todd. you know i felt so bad because he started to cry right away. and as a dog owner that is heartbreaking."she picked him up and ran down the hill copper on her heels. paula warned other hikers coming up the trail about the big snake. paula godwin/dog attacked by snake"i could tell todd was already getting swollen and i got in my truck and the animal hospital said the best thing that we could have done was get there so fast." ten minutes fast. veterinary in immediately and put them on anti-venom. todd will most likely be swollen for another week or so but with his puppy pain meds and a checkup on monday he should be just fine. paula godwin/dog attacked by snake"i don't know if todd you know intentionally did this but he saved me from being for sure like he's definitely my hero."
