(lydia)after last night's big 4th of july celebration... the california highway patrol cracked down on drunk drivers. kron 4's ali reid went on a ride with the chp in san francisco and has the story. i think a lot of drivers are aware that on any holiday ... including today ... c-h-p is out in full force.yet there were still people speeding and driving under the influence.pkg continue to the corner .. continueit was a busy day for the california highway patrol.

we're looking for those distracted drivers, going above the speed limit. anything where there may be potential for someone on the road under the influenceit wasn't hard to spot this gmc truck speeding right by us ... not only were they speeding at quite a high speed on the bride, but also following closely to the vehicle ahead of them. so should there be a reason that car needs to stop, there's going to be a collision and that's what we're trying to prevent.after getting to a safe location to pull over, officer ashley merchant conducted a series of tests, including a breathalyzer. in the end, she took it easy on the driver. here's the deal. i'm gonna give you a warning on your speeding today. you really need to slow down tho. we want you to get to your destination safelyall 9 chp divisions in the bay area are conducting maximum enforcement. and there have been a number of d-u-i arrests. during our run, we spotted another driver going way over the limit.she said 88, i didn't realize i was going that fast. i was behind a car.unfortunately for him, he left with a citation.also your registration is expired. you need to get that taken care of.standupc-h-p is out looking for drivers under the influence of alcohol or marijuana ... or a combination of both. so far tonight thety've had six arrests in san francisco ...(q: will enforcement end after tonight ) seeing that july 4th happens to be in the middle of the week, maximum enforcement will continue through the weekend and end on sunday.reporting live from san francisco ... ali reid ... kron 4 news. schedule. a quarter-mile of road was lost in the may 2017 landslide... it also created 24-hundred feet of new shoreline. (lydia)wildfires have continued to strengthen across the west -- with a couple especially large fires burning in california and colorado. at times, the weather has made the fires unpredictable. reporter andrew spencer has the latest. strong winds whipped up the lake christine fire, burning in basalt, colorado -- northwest of aspen.the fire grew quickly wednesday. evacuation orders came in for people to leave immediately; no time to pack.evacuee: "it's scary, because i no have a chance to take anything." evacuee: "of course we were scared, right? but we have our pets, we have our kids, and... we're... we're going."with erratic winds making predictions difficult, the eagle county sheriff's office said residents who feel unsafe should leave -- and not wait for evacuation ordersthere's also a lot of uncertainty surrounding the spring creek fire in southern colorado -- as evacuees wait to find out

when they'll be able to get back home, and whether their homes will still be standing. the spring creek fire is now the third-largest wildfire in state history......as of midnight, it was still only five-percent contained -- having burned more than 95- thousand-acres.in california, the county fire has burned almost as much land -- having scorched more than 86-thousand acres across the napa and yolo counties as of wednesday night. sharon farnham, lives in guinda, ca: "my house has never been a mile away from burning up, so yeah. pretty scary."right now, dozens of wildfires are burning across the west, and more than 13- thousand firefighters and support staff are doing what they can to try and contain them.i'm andrew spencer, reporting (lydia)and in the north bay... the pawnee fire is now 90 percent contained. it has burned 15-thousand acres. and all evacuation orders have been lifted. (lydia)relatives of the victims of the ghost ship warehouse fire, are filing new lawsuits. they claim others, beyond the two defendants in the case, are also responsible for the

deaths of 36 people. the families are suing the city of oakland, the building's owner ... and p-g-and-e, alleging issues with the building's inspections and maintenance. earlier this week, derick almena and max harris... pleaded no contest to 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. almena could be sentenced to nine years in prison .. while harris faces six years. some relatives believe the plea agreements were not tough enough. in the south bay.... police are still looking for one of three people accused of stealing ten- thousand dollars in bitcoin currency. police say three people stole a computer from a home on fourth street with 10-thousand dollars worth of the cryptocurreny. santa clara police have identified two suspects as 18 year old yessica barajas of san jose and 24 yaer old welbar quintanilla of san jose. deputies have not been able to locate the third suspect or the missing computer. (lydia) police in san francisco arrest a man carrying this gun into the civic center bart station. police say the gun was loaded

with an illegal, high capacity magazine. the man who was carrying it was from san leandro and was prohibited from carrying an gun because of his criminal history. (lydia)a stockton family is trying to warn others about an underwater danger... hidden in the california delta. a beloved father died... after getting sucked into an irrigation pipe. jennifer mcgraw has the story. it was supposed to be a day of fun.. boating in the delta.but for carlos tovar's family, it took a tragic turn.douglas saeltzer/tovar family attorney: "now wonderful man is dead, he apparently got caught in an irrigation pipe running water out of the delta."his family's attorney says carlos was untangling a ski line when he was sucked under.douglas saeltzer/tovar family attorney: "they couldn't free carlos and he drowned right before their eyes despite their efforts."investigators say it appears the man was held under by a pipe similar to this.it's used to pump water to crops.sgt. darren epperson/san joaquin county sheriff's dept."it's the first

growing urgency to rescue a dozen boys and their football coach from a flooded cave continues in thailand. heavy rains in the forecast could potentially raise the flood levels in the cave... leaving the boys trapped for months underground, until the monsoon season is over. now... the search has started in the hills above the cave for air vents or openings which lead directly to the boys. if they don't find a passageway... authorities are planning for the boys to use special scuba gear and swim out one by one... accompanied by a navy diver. independence day protest. a woman who scaled one of new york's most iconic landmarks, is in police custody. the arrest comes after spending nearly three hours at the feet of the statue of liberty. john lorinc has the story. a protester spent her independence day 150 feet above ground... at the feet of lady liberty.tiana smith / witness: "and then we looked up and at the bottom we were looking up where the green people meets the cement part of the statue, and at first we thought it was a man but i learned it was a lady, and she was waving her shirt, waving her hand."the woman spent hours hugging the statue's copper robes...finally settling into a crevice under her sandal.the demonstrators gathered on liberty island to protest the separation of migrant families.an event organizer said the woman's climb was not a planned part of the protest.authorities tried to talk the woman down. she refused -- telling police she wouldn't come down until quote, "all the children are released."detective brian

(lydia)the department of health and human services says it may be able to reunite immigrant children with their parents faster... if lawmakers would stop visiting detention facilities. h-h-s assistant secretary for legislation matthew bassett... claims officials have spent 500 hours facilitating congressional visits. bassett says these hours would have otherwise been spent helping children in custody. president trump signed an executive order last month that stops border officials

from separating children from families. however, many who were separated before the change in policy have not been reunited. lawmakers including house minority leader nancy pelosi say congressional oversight is critical. her office says there is no evidence the trump administration has a plan to reunite children even after a federal judge ordered an immediate start to the process. are out in full force in sacramento as well. yesterday there was a protest against immigration policies. demonstrators are calling to reunify and to end the federal agency known as 'ice'. there were no counter- protesters and no police presence outside the federal building--during the federal holiday. (lydia)this morning... a man is behind bars -- accused of stabbing someone near a police station. berkeley police arrested 19-year-old joshua gertz last week -- for an april stabbing that happened on mcgee avenue. officers say that on april third they found a 20-year-old who had been stabbedin the chest. they're asking anyone with information to call them. (lydia) an alleged burglar attempted to sell his victim cocaine after the resident woke up to the early morning crime in progress. the resident called police after a noise woke him up to find a stranger in his home.it happened on the 2700 block of durant avenue in berkeley. the man said the suspect

claimed to be trying to find a different address and then offered to sell the victim cocaine. officers found the suspect in the area of bancroft way and telegraph aveune where he attempted to run. jahcoby adams-mabin was arrested and charged with suspicion of burglary. (lydia)a car crash in northern california ended with an unexpected twist. angela musallam has the video... proving that luck was on the driver's side. first responders are calling it a miracle on eastbound i-80.nat sound"very very lucky." this incredible video, captured by chp cameras, showing this grey suv dodging two cars on the freeway, going airborne, then rolling over to a stop, inside a chp weigh station. the suv landed right side up, and moments later, you see two truck drivers jumping in to help the woman inside. chp officer ralph caggiano watched the whole thing from his desk. officer ralph caggiano/chp:"i thought there's no way, there's got to be some injuries."officer caggiano ran outside to see the woman already out of her car.officer

ralph caggiano/chp:"when i first talked to her i said 'hey let's try not to move around so much, don't move your neck, let me check things out.' this was a surprise for me to see her walk out completely uninjured."the driver told caggiano she was being tailgated on i-80, so she sped up to get out of the way, and lost control. paramedics who arrived on-scene say they couldn't believe the driver walked away. billy untalan/paramedic:"we took a look at the car, and it was one of those 'how the heck did they survive?'"captain billy untalan says if the trucks at the scales had been a few hundred feet ahead, that driver could have lost her life.capt. billy untalan/cordelia fire:"roof was caved in, to mid-seat, doors were crushed in, engine was non-salvageable, it was a complete loss, it was scrap metal after that."a crash most drivers wouldn't survive, luck was on this driver's side. billy untalan/paramedic: "that's just the cards they were dealt and i guess they bluffed their way through that one." musallam reporting. a post on the areas c-h-p facebook page applauded the trucking company for its employees stepping in to help the driver. (lydia) advocates for low- income people... are trying to change a law allowing the d- m-v to suspend driver's licenses if someone has an unpaid criminal, or traffic court debt. critics argue the law doesn't give people any notice- or the chance to argue that they can't afford the fees. but others insist that drivers need to be held accountable - and the threat of getting a license suspended is an incentive to pay their fines. more than 40 states... including california... allow license suspension for unpaid court debt. take a look at this. auto theft is not an uncommon crime - but here's something you don't see every day. a man stole his own car from the parking lot of the towing company.... that had moved it. ashley keehn has the story from santa cruz.

one florida family got a personal fireworks show inside their home ... when lightning crashed through the ceiling.
