lyft's website, safety is top priority. and the company runs extensive background checks on drivers.as a requirement, drivers undergo dmv, plus a national and county background check, which requires a social security number, in addition to an in-state drivers license that is at least a year old.so we asked lyft how lazo managed to pass their employment, criminal screening and background check?we're told ....individuals who drive for lyft must be eligible to work in the united states. city of martinez has had 6 water main breaks... and people who live there are fed up. the latest one happened yesterday on shell avenue and orange street... causing flooding to a few front lawns. water pressue remained low until about 5 o'clock. public works crews repaired the pipe that they estimate dates back to the 19-50's. long-time residents claim this is the third time they've seen the same pipe burst. ( robin )a public works supervisor says summertime heat shrinks the soil making the aging pipes more vulnerable to breaking... and that they are working to upgrade the city's water main this year. unit number thirteen at the bayshore commons in san leandro, for 81-year-old john busch... has been home for the past 15 years... in a city he's lived in for eight decades. his space is cramped, but he likes it, and this is where the retired design engineer planned live out his life. then he says the new owners that bought the park late last year changed everything.john busch/tenant- 'in october, they informed us that there was going to be a rate increase coming along in january." john says harmony communities increased his rent by more than half. from 585-dollars to 895. a representative for harmony tells kron four they offered john a subsidy to help off-set the difference... but that john declined.john busch/tenant- "i don't want the taxpayer to have to pay for my, uh, increase in rent. you know, so that they can make a killing on me." each month since january, john says he's tried to pay his

varney was killed over the weekend while battling the ferguson fire in mariposa county. officials say the bulldozer he was operating overturned and rolled down a ridge. the 36-year-old father of two worked for cal fire for 10 years. the accident is still under investigation. the ferguson fire has burned more than 12-thousand acres and is five-percent contained. ( robin )a bay area woman found something in her raw salmon she bought from the grocery store. take a look at this -- it's cell phone video taken by felicia cipolla. after she noticed something that appears to be a worm moving around in her parnter's planned dish for dinner. felicia cipolla says on monday night, she and her partner were getting ready to cut up some fish they bought earlier in the day from the costco store in richmond... when she noticed the movement.

( robin )by now -- most of you have heard about angela hernandez ... the 23 year old from portland oregon.. who was found alive days after driving off a cliff near big sur last week. it's an incredible story of survival and one that has many of us thinking -- could we do it? kron4's michelle kingston explores what kind of training we could all do to try to survive like angela. california because of whooping cough. alameda and marin counties have reported a spike in whooping cough cases. this is the first whooping cough death of an infant since 2016. here are the symptoms you need to look out for: whooping cough typically starts with a runny nose and cough for two weeks. the cough will then get worse and end with a whooping sound. the symptoms are less noticeable in infants. instead of coughing... they may stop breathing and their face will turn red or purple. ( robin )in a new survey... school distcts across the country found less than half actually test their water for lead. the report is based on a survey of 549 school districts across the u-s. it found 41 percent of school districts did not test for lead in 20-16 and 20-17. of those that did ...about 37 percent reported elevated levels of the toxin. the report was released by the government accountability

( sara )a woman is recovering after being shot in her s-u-v and a 21-year-old is fighting for his life this morning after being shot near the downtown san jose area.police say both shootings are unrelated.take vo:take a look at the video from the first shooting that happened just after ten last night on san antonio and capitol expressway at jackson.the woman shot in her s-u-v was transferred to the nearest trauma center, police say she is expected to survive.police say they are investigating this as car to car shooting.áá the second shooting happened just north of downtown around midnight.

the past 15 years... in a city he's lived in for eight decades. his space is cramped, but he likes it, and this is where the retired design engineer planned live out his life. then he says the new owners that bought the park late last year changed everything.john busch/tenant- 'in october, they informed us that there was going to be a rate increase coming along in january." john says harmony communities increased his rent by more than half. from 585-dollars to 895. a representative for harmony tells kron four they offered john a subsidy to help off-set the difference... but that john declined.john busch/tenant- "i don't want the taxpayer to have to pay for my, uh, increase in rent. you know, so that they can make a killing on me." each month since january, john says he's tried to pay his rent, but only with a seven- percent increase that he proposed. he says the property manager has only accepted one check. the city of san leandro doesn't have rent control. councilmember corina lopez says she's discussing with her colleagues ways to prevent

told you about yesterday. the placer county sheriff's office says 60-year-old kenneth whittall-scherfee was killed. he also owned the plane. the name of the second person who died has not been released. the f-a-a says the single-engine plane went down yesterday morning just before 8. officials say the pilot reported engine problems almost immediately after taking off from the truckee-tahoe airport and was trying to return when the plane went down. ( darya ) 3 more people have been arrested in a hammer attack that injured 3 teens. the attack happened back in may in aptos. police say several masked teens went into a home on monte vista drive... and attacked the teens who were sleeping inside. two victims -- who are 16 and 17-years-old -- suffered major head injuries. in total... four teens from watsonville -- a 15-year-old and three 16- year-olds --- were arrested in connection with the attack. police have not revealed a

bay... dangerous levels of blue een algae were found in discovery bay. ( james ) the toxic algae has been known to kill pets ... and can make people sick. kron 4's j.r.stone has more. this is blue-green algae floating in discovery bay and those from contra costa health services say you need to watch out for it. something that is news to troy johnson who hadn't been in this water since he was 10. he jumped in tuesday afternoon.sotthose from contra costa environmental health say this is the fourth year in a row they've had this problem. they tested 12 areas of discovery bay at the end of june. all 12 areas had blue-

( james ) investigators are trying to figure out what caused a small plane to crash near truckee -- killing two people and critically injuring a third person. this is an update to a story we first told you about yesterday. the placer county sheriff's office says 60-year-old kenneth whittall-scherfee was killed. he also owned the plane. the name of the second person who died has not been released. the f-a-a says the single-engine plane went down yesterday morning just before 8. officials say the pilot reported engine problems almost immediately after taking off from the truckee-tahoe airport and was trying to return when the plane went down. ( darya ) 3 more people have been arrested in a hammer attack that injured 3 teens. the attack happened back in may in aptos. police say several masked teens went into

a home on monte vista drive... and attacked the teens who were sleeping inside. two victims -- who are 16 and 17-years-old -- suffered major head injuries. in total... four teens from watsonville -- a 15-year-old and three 16- year-olds --- were arrested in connection with the attack. police have not revealed a motive for the attack. ( darya ) police in san francisco have arrested a man for seven counts of robbery that happened along the pennisula. thomas mckay was arrested after a 5 month investigation. the charges filed against mckay included four counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and seven counts of kidnapping. police tied mckay to two cell phone store robberies. they say he brandished a gun.. stole cash and cell phones... while also locking the employees up in another room. us a leaflet on parasites in marine fish which stated that fish can have parasites. the leaflet written by two u-c davis seafood specalists said that throughly cooking the fish would destroy the parasite. and also just to say how impressed i am."in santa cruz, michelle kingston, kron 4 news ( james ) 4 your health this morning... the state department of public health says a baby has died from whooping cough. the baby was from san bernardino. now... health officials are urging pregnant women to get immunized... and telling parents to immunize their babies as soon as possible. each year... between 50 and 200 babies are hospitalized in california because of whooping cough. alameda and marin counties have reported a spike in whooping cough cases. this is the first whooping cough death of an infant since 2016. here are the symptoms you need to look out for: whooping cough typically starts with a runny nose and cough for two weeks. the cough will then get worse and end with a whooping sound. the symptoms are less noticeable in infants. instead of coughing... they may stop breathing and their face will turn red or ( james ) a new survey of school

districts around the country found less than half test their water for lead. the report is based on a survey of 549 school districts across the u-s. it found 41 percent of school districts did not test for lead in 20-16 and 20-17. of those that did ...about 37 percent reported elevated levels of the toxin. the report was released by the government accountability office. there is no federal law that requires schools to test for lead. but lead can cause brain damage and learning disabilities in children.
