( robin )the man accused of raping four women while posing as a rideshare driver went before a judge. the undocumenter man could face several life sentences if he is convicted. kron 4's ali reid has the story. orlando lazo is facing 12 felonies .... accused of raping 4 women in san francisco while posing as a lyft driver. at this time the defendant is looking at life in prisonfederal immigration authorities announced vilchez lazo is a citizen of peru and in the united states illegally. yet, lazo was driving for years.according to

lyft's website, safety is top priority. and the company runs extensive background checks on drivers.as a requirement, drivers undergo dmv, plus a national and county background check, which requires a social security number, in addition to an in-state drivers license that is at least a year old.so we asked lyft how lazo managed to pass their employment, criminal screening and background check?we're told ....individuals who drive for lyft must be eligible to work in the united states. "unfortunately in this circumstance, this person fraudulently represented himself."and that they're now actively addressing this case of fraud with their background check provider. tuesday was lazo's first court appearance since his arrest. ice has stated that the san francisco county jail shields criminal aliens by not notifying them about their impending release. but lazo's attorney says that's n what this case is about.eric quandt/ deputy public defender ice has made

this case about sanctuary laws and immigration status and that has nothing to do with the charges being brought by the da. ( robin ) a young man... shot to death while waiting for a bus in the middle of the day. now the victim's mother is pleading with the shooter to turn himself in... saying she's ready to forgive him. a large cash reward is also on the table. kron4's haaziq madyun reports. the unsolved murder of patrick scott jr is the subject of a joint homicide task force investigation with the oakland police department and the f.b.i.sot

27-year-old son patrick scott jr. was shot to death back on februrary 3, 2018 just before 11am while waiting at this bus stop on 62nd and market street in west oakland. it has been almost 6-months. investigators want to keep the heat under the murder case to prevent it from going coldsotsot the f.b.i. and the oakland police department are offering a reward of $30,000 dollars for information leading to an arrest in this case...in oakland haaziq madyun kron4news ( robin )( robin ) for the last week now... the

city of martinez has had 6 water main breaks... and people who live there are fed up. the latest one happened yesterday on shell avenue and orange street... causing flooding to a few front lawns. water pressue remained low until about 5 o'clock. public works crews repaired the pipe that they estimate dates back to the 19-50's. long-time residents claim this is the third time they've seen the same pipe burst. ( robin )a public works supervisor says summertime heat shrinks the soil making the aging pipes more vulnerable to breaking... and that they are working to upgrade the city's water main this year. ( robin )crissy field avenue in san francisco's presidio will be permanently closed friday. the roadway will be converted to a trail for pedestrians and bicyclists to

help connect crissy field to the golden gate bridge. once closed... pedestrians will still be able to go in both directions..but bicyclists will only be able to travel uphill until improvements are completed in the coming months. motorists will still be able to access the area using lincoln blvd and mcdowell avenue. ( robin ) in the east bay... a drill falls from a car... hits the windshiled of another car and injures 2 people. east contra costa fire protection tweeted out these pictures. this happened monday afternoon on vasco road near alameda county. the car that dropped the drill did ánot stop at the scene. ( robin )an 81-year-old man who has spent all but one year of his life in san leandro is now facing eviction. kron four's philippe djegal spoke with the man who says his new property owners are pricing him out.

unit number thirteen at the bayshore commons in san leandro, for 81-year-old john busch... has been home for the past 15 years... in a city he's lived in for eight decades. his space is cramped, but he likes it, and this is where the retired design engineer planned live out his life. then he says the new owners that bought the park late last year changed everything.john busch/tenant- 'in october, they informed us that there was going to be a rate increase coming along in january." john says harmony communities increased his rent by more than half. from 585-dollars to 895. a representative for harmony tells kron four they offered john a subsidy to help off-set the difference... but that john declined.john busch/tenant- "i don't want the taxpayer to have to pay for my, uh, increase in rent. you know, so that they can make a killing on me." each month since january, john says he's tried to pay his

rent, but only with a seven- percent increase that he proposed. he says the property manager has only accepted one check. the city of san leandro doesn't have rent control. councilmember corina lopez says she's discussing with her colleagues ways to prevent situations like john's.corina lopez/councilmember- "the last thing we want to do is create homelessness in this whole conversation about, you know, gentrification. and, we don't want to add to the problem, we want to prevent the problem from happening in the first place."john busch/tenant- "i don't think i should be forced to be removed from a community i've known all my life." john has reached an agreement with harmony communities to cancel his debt with the mobile home park if he leaves within a month. but says he will continue to explore all of his legal options... his friends have started an online fundraiser to help him to do so. in san leandro, philippe djegal, kron four news. ( robin )alameda county officials announced there will be more funding for immigrants facing deportation.

keeping close watch nonetheless.bob/resident "...i smelled smoke and came outside and saw that the calfire people were all over it so i felt pretty good about that..."nats (md-87 air tanker drops retardant)one of calfire's biggest air tankers, an md-87 out of mclellan air force base made two passes at the metcalf fire, which erupted in a remote canyon about five miles east of highway 101, off mecalf road. the tanker scored direct hits on both passes, stopping the fire's forward progress, buying time for calfire to mobilize resources and get ground crews to the scene.pam temmerman/calfire '....the good thing this morning is that we had very little wind out there...that helped because even a little wind on a fire like this and it can take off..." the fire broke out on a remote hillside on property that was once home to the long since defunct united technologies/pratt & whitney corporation, which made and tested rocket motors for the space program. it's only ocupants now are cattle and lots of grass.pam temmerman/calfire "....given that it is july and we're getting these high temperatures and the fuel is so dry, we have to make sure

varney was killed over the weekend while battling the ferguson fire in mariposa county. officials say the bulldozer he was operating overturned and rolled down a ridge. the 36-year-old father of two worked for cal fire for 10 years. the accident is still under investigation. the ferguson fire has burned more than 12-thousand acres and is five-percent contained. ( robin )a bay area woman found something in her raw salmon she bought from the grocery store. take a look at this -- it's cell phone video taken by felicia cipolla. after she noticed something that appears to be a worm moving around in her parnter's planned dish for dinner. felicia cipolla says on monday night, she and her partner were getting ready to cut up some fish they bought earlier in the day from the costco store in richmond... when she noticed the movement.

is gross.">( robin ) we reached out to costco. in response, they sent us a leaflet on parasites in marine fish which stated all lviing organisims inclduing fish can have parasites. the leaflet written by two uc davis seafood specalists, said that throughly cooking the salmon would destroy the parasite. baker street... in the city's filmore district. police say an unidentified man was returning home to his apartment... when two men apprached him waiving a gun... and wearing ski masks. police say female a neighbor walked into the situation. and she was then duct taped and placed next to the man in the apartment.(sot)

sleeping. two victims who are 16 and 17-years-old suffered major head injuries. in total, four teens from watsonville.. a 15-year-old and three 16-year-olds... were arrested in connection to the attack. police have not yet said a motive. ( robin )by now -- most of you have heard about angela hernandez ... the 23 year old from portland oregon.. who was found alive days after driving off a cliff near big sur last week. it's an incredible story of survival and one that has many of us thinking -- could we do it? kron4's michelle kingston explores what kind of training we could all do to try to survive like angela. (mk)cliff hodges, adventure out founder/owner"for someone to last that long with almost nothing is just incredible." cliff hodges says when he first heard about angela hernandez -- the young woman who survived nearly a week alone after driving off a cliff -- he thought it was either made up or she had supplies in her car.911 call"a

report of a vehicle injury accident for a vehicle off of a cliff. the vehicle and the female are going to be about 200 feet down. she is conscious and breathing." hernandez wrote on facebook:i could feel water rising over my knees. every bone in my body hurt. i was able to break out of my car."hernandez suffered from a brain hemorrhage, a collapsed lung and fractured ribs, shoulder and collar bones.she collected fresh water from moss ... and walked the beach searching for help -- until nearly a week later -- when a couple found her alive.cliff hodges, adventure out founder/owner"as someone who teaches thousands of students a year how to survive in the wilderness even with certain skillsets and certain environments a lot of people wouldn't even make it a day or two and for her to go a week with no supplies and from what i know no training is just an incredible story and i think it says a lot about her character."michelle kingston, mkingstonnewscliff hodges is the owner and founder of adventure out -- an outdoor school that teaches people primitive survival skills in both the north and south bay.

california because of whooping cough. alameda and marin counties have reported a spike in whooping cough cases. this is the first whooping cough death of an infant since 2016. here are the symptoms you need to look out for: whooping cough typically starts with a runny nose and cough for two weeks. the cough will then get worse and end with a whooping sound. the symptoms are less noticeable in infants. instead of coughing... they may stop breathing and their face will turn red or purple. ( robin )in a new survey... school distcts across the country found less than half actually test their water for lead. the report is based on a survey of 549 school districts across the u-s. it found 41 percent of school districts did not test for lead in 20-16 and 20-17. of those that did ...about 37 percent reported elevated levels of the toxin. the report was released by the government accountability

( james ) kron 4's sara stinson is live in san jose this morning with the details. ( sara )a woman is recovering after being shot in her s-u-v and a 21-year-old is fighting for his life this morning after being shot near the downtown san jose area.police say both shootings are unrelated.take vo:take a look at the video from the first shooting that happened just after ten last night on san antonio and capitol expressway at jackson.the woman shot in her s-u-v was transferred to the nearest trauma center, police say she is expected to survive.police say they are investigating this as car to car shooting.áá the second shooting happened just north of downtown around midnight.

the 21-year-old gunshot victim was brought to o'connor hospital first by his family. but doctors decided to transport by ambulance to valley medical center since his injuries are life- threatening.in the video you see several people in hand cuffs and a lot of police presence...that's because police at first thought the family could be involved in the first shooting...but police say that is not the case.take sot:xxxxcont. vo:no one has been arrested is either shooting at this point. so far police are saying the shooting could have happened in the area of julian and washington streets.we're waiting to get an update on the investigation and a condition update on the shooting victims.live in san jose, sara stinson, kron 4 news.###

have been under close supervision since they were recused on july 10. the boys are taking part in a news conference to talk about their ordeal and thank rescuers. the boys first disappeared on june 23rd after going into the cave. british divers found the boys and their coach two weeks later.. they survived by drinking the water dripping off the cave walls. told you about yesterday. the placer county sheriff's office says 60-year-old kenneth whittall-scherfee was killed. he also owned the plane. the name of the second person who died has not been released. the f-a-a says the single-engine plane went down yesterday morning just before 8. officials say the pilot reported engine problems almost immediately after taking off from the truckee-tahoe airport and was trying to return when the plane went down. ( darya ) 3 more people have been arrested in a hammer attack that injured 3 teens. the attack happened back in may in aptos. police say several masked teens went into a home on monte vista drive... and attacked the teens who were sleeping inside. two victims -- who are 16 and 17-years-old -- suffered major head injuries. in total... four teens from watsonville -- a 15-year-old and three 16- year-olds --- were arrested in connection with the attack. police have not revealed a

motive for the attack. ( darya ) police in san francisco have arrested a man for seven counts of robbery that happened along the pennisula. thomas mckay was arrested after a 5 month investigation. the charges filed against mckay included four counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and seven counts of kidnapping. police tied mckay to two cell phone store robberies. they say he brandished a gun.. stole cash and cell phones... while also locking the employees up in another room. ( darya ) police in santa rosa are looking for this man connected to a coin store robbery. on july 14th... two men entered the big oak coin store on west third street. they tried to take trays of coins before they were confronted by employees. one man fired at employess before he took off... he was later arrested in los angeles. police are still looking for this man and believe he is connected to a previous coin theft at the same store. green algae and 9 of the 12 had dangerous or toxic levels. they believe drought conditions, low water levels, and fertilizer from nearby fields is to blame. sot officials say a section of the water with the stronger current did not have those toxic levels but they still recommend avoiding swimming because 75 percent of the area does show dangerous levels. the algae could get you sick and even cause internal problems or skin rashes. last year two dogs died in napa after swimming in the algae infected water. troy johnson is taking the news with a smile...especially since his friend recommended that he jump in the water.sotj.r. stone

and the f.b.i.the 27-year-old was killed on february 3rd this year ... at a bus stop 62nd and market street in west oakland. the victims mother wants closure.

are still on the loose this morning. ( james ) investigators are trying to figure out what caused a small plane to crash near truckee -- killing two people and critically injuring a third person. this is an update to a story we first told you about yesterday. the placer county sheriff's office says 60-year-old kenneth whittall-scherfee was killed. he also owned the plane. the name of the second person who died has not been released. the f-a-a says the single-engine plane went down yesterday morning just before 8. officials say the pilot reported engine problems almost immediately after taking off from the truckee-tahoe airport and was trying to return when the plane went down. ( darya ) 3 more people have been arrested in a hammer attack that injured 3 teens. the attack happened back in may in aptos. police say several masked teens went into

a home on monte vista drive... and attacked the teens who were sleeping inside. two victims -- who are 16 and 17-years-old -- suffered major head injuries. in total... four teens from watsonville -- a 15-year-old and three 16- year-olds --- were arrested in connection with the attack. police have not revealed a motive for the attack. ( darya ) police in san francisco have arrested a man for seven counts of robbery that happened along the pennisula. thomas mckay was arrested after a 5 month investigation. the charges filed against mckay included four counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and seven counts of kidnapping. police tied mckay to two cell phone store robberies. they say he brandished a gun.. stole cash and cell phones... while also locking the employees up in another room. ( darya ) police in santa rosa are looking for this man connected to a coin store robbery. on july 14th... two men entered the big oak coin store on west third street. they tried to take trays of coins before

they were confronted by employees. one man fired at employess before he took off... he was later arrested in los angeles. police are still looking for this man and believe he is connected to a previous coin theft at the same store. ( james )(ááá2 shotááá) a disturbing discovery after a woman buys raw salmon from a coscto in the east bay.( darya ) this is cell phone video taken by felicia cipolla... after she noticed something that appears to be a worm moving around in the fish she had bought she and her partner were getting ready to cut up the fish... which was bought at the costco store in richmond... when she noticed something moving. us a leaflet on parasites in marine fish which stated that fish can have parasites. the leaflet written by two u-c davis seafood specalists said that throughly cooking the fish would destroy the parasite. ( james ) less than 1 week on the job... san francisco's mayor is already is getting a first hand look at the work being done to clean up homeless encampments. mayor london breed checked out a campsite that city officials say has been a problem for decades. she watched as city crews swept up debris and public health officers picked up needles on king street. the mayor met with some of the homeless living in this spot. one man got emotional talking about moving into a new ánavigation center.

and also just to say how impressed i am."in santa cruz, michelle kingston, kron 4 news ( james ) 4 your health this morning... the state department of public health says a baby has died from whooping cough. the baby was from san bernardino. now... health officials are urging pregnant women to get immunized... and telling parents to immunize their babies as soon as possible. each year... between 50 and 200 babies are hospitalized in california because of whooping cough. alameda and marin counties have reported a spike in whooping cough cases. this is the first whooping cough death of an infant since 2016. here are the symptoms you need to look out for: whooping cough typically starts with a runny nose and cough for two weeks. the cough will then get worse and end with a whooping sound. the symptoms are less noticeable in infants. instead of coughing... they may stop breathing and their face will turn red or ( james ) a new survey of school

districts around the country found less than half test their water for lead. the report is based on a survey of 549 school districts across the u-s. it found 41 percent of school districts did not test for lead in 20-16 and 20-17. of those that did ...about 37 percent reported elevated levels of the toxin. the report was released by the government accountability office. there is no federal law that requires schools to test for lead. but lead can cause brain damage and learning disabilities in children. ( darya ) crissy field avenue in san francisco's presidio will permanently close on friday. the roadway will be turned into a
