( robin ) another big story we are following out of the east bay... 6 people are in custody after a police chase in oakland. the chase ended in the area of

34th avenue and farnam street... in the fruitvale district. the people ran inside a home in the area. this is a picture from the scene. after an hour long standoff they surrendered. nobody was ( robin ) another big story we are following... a large grass fire is burning in milpitas this morning. that fire has burned about 300 acres. it is only 40% contained. one building was destroyed... about 10 others are threatened and some people were forced to evacuate. kron 4's hermela aregawi has the latest. saturday afternoon.. a grassfire is sparked.. and quickly spreads.burning through more than 300 acres within a few hours.primarily again because of that very typical afternoon breeze it push the fire southeast into a very steep drainage and so you've got the combination of topography it being steep and also just very thick brush in there. that once it got in there, it just makes it a little more challenging to extinguish it effectively.fire offificals say a handful of

people were evacuated.. after two ranch properties were deemed at threat... and they say one of the biggest problem areas is ed levin park.the active part of the fire that is still burning is in the park and it burned again up a very steep drainage with some heavier fuel. so it's going to take some time for crew to get in there on the ground and actually construct some fire line on the ground.200 firefighters are working on this.. with four airtankers and two helicopters.the air resources are a big part of containing the fire early on... but officials tell us the people on the ground are really what nips it at the root.they say.. fortunately.. the fire is behaving more calmly. and the weather is also cooperating.right now the fire behavior has diminished quite a bit because the weather is starting to cool down, the relative humidity is comin up ( robin ) that was hermela aregawi reporting. this morning there is no word on when firefighters expect to have that fire fully contained.

( robin ) all evacuations have been lifted in connection to the carder fire near kelseyville. we first told you about this fire saturday on kron 4 news. these are some pictures showing what it looked like. you can see all of the smoke. in total 57 acres burned. evacuations had been issued on saturday but again all of those have been lifted. that fire is about 80% contained. ( robin ) and in mariposa county-- yosemite west and anderson valley areas are under mandatory evacuations...a s the ferguson fire continues to grow. that fire has burned more than 32-thousand acres and is just 6 percent contained. nearly 3- thousand firefighters are battling this fire. crews are cutting fire breaks to protect nearby communities. < "being up there, it's very, very steep terrain. it's not very accessible. to get to there the crews have to take avery long trip to get around and into that area." kelly peck / red cross shelter supervisor: "this is our home and were taking care of our own.">( robin ) the fire is expected to

grow when cal fire provides a new update later this morning. ( robin ) in the north bay... the pathway home in yountville will not reopen. in march... a former client shot and killed three women inside the mental health facility... and then took his own life. since then... veterans in the pathway program have been referred to other places across the bay area... including in napa and martinez. the pathway home opened in 2008... and will formally end its lease with the veterans home of california on august 31st. ( robin ) in the east bay... berkeley police are investigating a shooting that sent stray bullets flying into at least 2 homes. it happened near the delaware and 10th street intersection in northwest berkeley. kron 4's ali reid has the latest on the investigation. in a neighborhood where

story we are following this morning... one person is dead following an hours-long hostage situation at a trader joe's. it happened on saturday and this morning we are learning more about the victim and what lead up to the standoff. kim hutcherson has the details. an armed man terrorized a trader joe's saturday afternoon -- leaving one person dead.chief michel moore / lapd: "a young woman was shot and killed and unfortunately were unable to revive her."the victim, identified by her brother as melyda corado, had worked at trader joe's for about four years.authorities say the suspect was fleeing the scene of a seperate shooting incident when the ordeal began. chief michel moore / lapd: "he shot his grandmother multiple times. in the course of that attack, a young woman was also injured and he forcibly took her from that residence and drug her to a vehicle and then left the scene."officers

followed suit -- police say the suspect fired multiple rounds at them during the chasthe pursuit ended when he crashed his car in la's silver lake neighborhood. miguel trujillo / eyewitness: "he got out of his car quickly and the cops fired at him, and he then fired at them. and in all that, in that instant moment, he went running into trader joe's."police said about 40 people were inside the store when the suspect ran in.some customers immediately ran outside -- others were released during the nearly three-hour ordeal.a few employees were seen escaping on a chain ladder dangling from a back window.ultimately, hostage negotiators were able to convince the suspect to surrender.mayor eric garcetti / los angeles: "the suspect at the end asked for handcuffs. he handcuffed himself and then released himself into the custody of lapd."i'm kim hutcherson reporting. gourmonade on valencia in the mission district, posted about the incident on instagram on july 17, captioning the photo showing him with police in the background. stevenson says he was standing outside his store on the phone with security for around 10 minutes when police showed up. "someone called and said i was breaking into my establishment," stevenson said. "four cops just hopped out on me guns almost drawn took my id at my own store. this racist thing is out of control but it won't stop me! living my dreams like they are golden because they are lol," he captioned the photo.with other similar incidents being reported in the bay area and around thecountry, people nationwide and around the world voiced their opinions on social media about the incident."stay strong, brother! keep following and realizing your dreams. got your back here in nyc!!!" one user commented. early saturday morning. it happened on the 37-hundred block of sunset lane. police found the 55-year-old victim on the ground. he was airlifted to a hospital where he died. a 31-year- old man was taken into custody but police have not released any information about that man. they have also not said what led up to that fight. ( robin ) some people in san ramon aren't happy about plans to build a doggy day care service in their community. opponents say camp bow wow will disrupt traffic on alcosta boulevard... and potentially cause sanitation issues. the potential business could house up to 125 dogs at a time. some neighbors believe this will bring additional noise and parking issues to their community. ( robin ) if approved... camp bow wow plans to be open every day. another public

meeting to discuss the issues is scheduled for august 16th. ( robin ) one of the darkest days in berkeley's history was remembered as the community joined togetehr for the unveiling of a memorial plaque. it honors the six students who died three years ago when a balcony collapsed. kron four's philippe djegal was at the ceremony. (philippe)nats- "we know that the families will grieve all their lives for their children and so we pray for them on this day." it was an emotional morning for the families of the young people who did not survive the deadly 20-15 balcony collapse in berkeley.jesse arreguin/mayor- "the balcony collapse is one of the saddest days in the history of our city." on saturday... at martin luther king junior civic park... the city unveiled a memorial plaque honoring the six irish and irsh american students... who fell 50 feet and died three years ago when a balacony crumbled during a birthday party. some of the victims' families traveled from overseas to

attend the ceremony. ireland's ambassador to the united states, daniel mulhall made the trip from washington d-c.daniel mulhall/ambassador- "it's a tradition in ireland that many young irish people come to the united states, spend the summer, the student's summer as i did. and, therefore, we in ireland feel a great sense of contact with this tragedy of the loss of these six young people at the beginning of their lives." berkeley mayor jesse arreguin says the incident resulted in the city passing legislation... strengthening building standards for the construction of new balconies.jesse arregui/mayor- "and, that immediately resulted in hundreds of buildings in the city of berkeley requiring improvements to make their balconies much more safe. and, uh, berkeley's legislation, um, became a, uh, inspiration for legislation that is now state law."dave brannigan/fire chief- "important part of remembering is to pay tribute to the victims and the families. but then to ensure that these things don't happen again." last year... the victims' families reached settelements with the apartment complex owners and property managers. in berkeley, philippe djegal, kron four news. ( darya ) berkeley police are investigating a shooting that sent stray bullets flying into at least 2 homes. it happened near delaware and 10th streets early yesterday morning. neighbors say there was a fight in the street... then they heard gunshots. one of the men involved in the fight was shot in the toe. no one inside either home was hurt. ( darya ) happening now... the search is on for a missing university of iowa student... who grew up in oakland.. 20-year-old mollie tibbets was last seen wednesday night in the small town of brooklyn iowa... an hour outside of des moines. officials say tibbets went out for a jog and never returned home. hundreds of volunteers came out to help in the search. mollie's aunt says she knew something was

wrong when mollie didn't show up for work the next day. the family remains hopeful that she will be found. this morning... members of this morning... members of the community gathered for the third annual mario woods remembrance day. over the weekend, his family .. including his mother gathered to remember him. woods was a stabbing suspect who was shot and killed by police back in december of 20- 15. cell phone video of the shooting went viral.. and complaints of excessive force led to a review of s-f-p-d. but many maintain there remains a disparity as to how people of color are treated by police. ( darya ) in may... the d-a declined to prosecute the officers involved in the mario woods shooting saying under current law that use of force was legal. ( darya ) happening today... the coast guard will begin salvaging the duck boat that sank in missouri last week killing 17 people.

divers have found the boat at the bottom of the lake. it went down thurday night in the middle of a thunderstorm. investigators say none of the 17 people killed were wearing life jackets. nine of the people killed were members of a single family. tia coleman lost her husband, three children, and five other members of her family. ( darya ) 31 people were on that boat when it went down. now the state is looking into the incident to see whether any criminal acts were

committed. ( darya ) in the east bay... one person is dead after getting into a fight early saturday morning. it happened on the 37-hundred block of sunset lane. police found the 55-year-old victim on the ground. he was airlifted to a hospital where he died. a 31-year- old man was taken into custody but police have not released any information about that man. they have not said what led up to that fight. ( james ) also in the east bay... a police chase turns deadly on highway 24 in orinda. the chase started when the driver refused to stop during a routine traffic stop on saturday. it ended when the driver flipped over on the highway and the car burst into flames. there were two people inside the car when it flipped. one of them died. the other is in the hospital this morning. it is not clear why the people in the car were trying to get away from police. ( james ) five fisherman had to be rescued after being stranded by a rising tide in marin county. the four men and one woman were stranded off the coast just south of muir beach over the weekend.

fire crews led the rescue effort... and guided the group safely back to shore. no one was injured. ( james ) happening today... the city of martinez will decide whether to put a sales tax increase on the november ballot. the measure would increase the sales tax by a half of a percent. city officials say the money would be used to maintain 9-1-1 emergency response times and recruit more police officers. if the measure is placed on the ballot and approved by voters... city officials say it will raise an additional 3- point-2 million dollars annually. ( james ) thousands of people are expected to attend a celebration of life for firefighter braden varney. he was killed last weekend... when his bulldozer rolled down a mountain ridge while trying to cut fire lines for the ferguson fire. a visitation was held yesterday in modesto. varney leaves behind a wife and a young two children. ( darya ) a gunman opens fire inside a toronto restaurant... killing 2 people and injuring 12 others. this morning... a 9-year-old girl is in critical condition. police say last night's shooting was ánot random and terrorism hasn't been ruled out. the gunman died after a shootout with police. witnesses say they heard 20 to 30 shots. ( darya ) police say the shooter used a handgun. they have not released his name or motive.

( james ) happening today... trial begins for the man accused of shooting 2 people who were inside a car. this is video of sadel wilkes being arrested in oakland last october. the shooting happening last september at the industrial parkway onramp to 880 in hayward. witnesses say wilkes walked up to a car stopped at a light... and started shooting. wilkes is facing multiple charges -- including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. ( james ) berkeley police are investigating a shooting that sent stray bullets flying into at least 2 homes. it happened near delaware and 10th streets early yesterday morning. neighbors say there was a fight in the street... then they heard gunshots. one of the men involved in the fight was shot in the toe. no one inside either home was hurt. ( darya ) happening now... the search is on for a missing university of iowa student... who grew up in oakland.. 20-year-old mollie tibbets was last seen wednesday night in the small town of brooklyn iowa... an

hour outside of des moines. officials say tibbets went out for a jog and never returned home. hundreds of volunteers came out to help in the search. mollie's aunt says she knew something was wrong when mollie didn't show up for work the next day. the family remains hopeful that she will be found. ( darya ) local businesses in iowa say the plan to start making yard signs and t-shirts with mollie's picture to help with the search efforts. ( james ) in the north bay... the pathway home in yountville will not reopen. in march... a former client shot and killed three women inside the mental health facility... and then took his own life. since then... veterans in the pathway program have been referred to

revive her."the victim, identified by her brother as melyda corado, had worked at trader joe's for about four years.authorities say the suspect was fleeing the scene of a seperate shooting incident when the ordeal began. chief michel moore / lapd: "he shot his grandmother multiple times. in the course of that attack, a young woman was also injured and he forcibly took her from that residence and drug her to a vehicle and then left the scene."officers followed suit -- police say the suspect fired multiple rounds at them during the chase.the pursuit ended when he crashed his car in la's silver lake neighborhood. miguel trujillo / eyewitness: "he got out of his car quickly and the cops fired at him, and he then fired at them. and in all that, in that instant moment, he went running into trader joe's."police said about 40 people were inside the store when the suspect ran in.some customers immediately ran outside -- others were released during the nearly three-hour ordeal.a few employees were seen escaping on a chain ladder dangling from a back window.ultimately, hostage negotiators were able to convince the suspect to surrender.mayor eric garcetti

( lydia ) one woman has died and another woman has been hospitalized following what appears to be a random double stabbing at the macarthur bart station on sunday night, bart officials said. bart police are searching for the suspect who is described as a white male who is heavy set with short hair in his 20s or 30s.

the fire in the hills between milpitas and fremont has the potential to grow to 500 acres, cal fire assistant division chief jim crawford said. an outbuilding or barn may have been damaged but no homes are threatened, crawford said. ed r. levin county park is located in the chaparral foothills of the diablo range east of the santa clara valley. it is the largest park in milpitas and a popular location for hang gliding. today... the coast guard will begin salvaging the duck boat that sank in missouri last week killing 17 people. divers have divers have found the boat at the bottom of the lake. it went down thurday night in the middle of a thunderstorm. investigators say none of the 17 people killed were wearing life jackets. nine of the people killed were members of a single family. tia coleman lost her husband, three children, and five other members of her family. boat when it went down. now the state is looking into the incident to see whether any criminal acts were committed. ( james ) a big story this morning... members of the community gathered for the third annual mario woods remembrance day. over the weekend, his family .. including his mother gathered to remember him. woods was the stabbing suspect who was shot and killed by police back in december of 20-15. cell phone video of the shooting went viral.. and complaints of excessive force led to a review of s-f-p-d. but many maintain there remains a disparity as to how people of color are treated by police. woods shooting saying under current law that use of force was legal. ( darya ) in the east bay... one person is dead after getting into a fight early saturday morning. it happened on the 37-hundred block of sunset lane. police found the 55-year-old victim on the ground. he was airlifted to a hospital where he died. a 31-year- old man was taken into custody but police have not released any information about that man. they have not said what led up to that fight. ( darya ) also in the east bay... a police chase turns deadly on highway 24 in orinda. the chase started when the driver refused to stop during a routine traffic stop on saturday. it ended when the driver flipped over on the highway and the car burst into flames. there were two people inside the car when it flipped. one of them died. the other is in the hospital this morning. it is not clear why the people in the car were trying to get away from police. ( james ) five fisherman had to be rescued after being stranded by a rising tide in marin county. the four men

and one woman were stranded off the coast just south of muir beach over the weekend. fire crews led the rescue effort... and guided the group safely back to shore. no one was injured.
