we are covering four major wildfires burning across california tonight.... causing major evacuations and with the heat rising firefighters are working around the clock... and it's only july. i'm grant lodes(vicki) i'm vicki liviakis... governor brown has declared a state of emergency. as california burns. the good news... fire crews are getting the upper hand on the marsh fire, which broke out near clayton yesterday afternoon. while the fire is officially 60 percent contained, progress seems much more significant. kron 4's dan kerman is live along marsh creek road, just east of clayton with more. (dan) thursday fire crews spent much of the day mopping up from the marsh fire in clayton.the blaze started wednesday afternoon in what can best be described as horse country, though in addition to ranches there are also residential homes. strong winds propelled

(ken) governor brown has declared a state of emergency. earlier we spoke with the director of cal fire... ken pimlott... about why the wildfires are seeming to get worse over the years. the last four or five year's we've been comparing the current year to the previous year and almost every year it's been more fires and often more acres burned. this year we are seeing an increase in fires compared to this time last year and what has changed

is this is earlier. the kinds of conditions right now. there isn't any part of the state that is immune to these conditions right now. these are the kids of peak conditions we would see in august or september and we are doing this in the middle of july. almost every year the more intense part of fire season comes earlier. we are seeing more extre weather events. we are seeing more weather storms and weather events that are more intense than they have been in the past. we also see our precipitation come more in the form of rain than snow and at different times and different patterns and all of that is generating fuel conditions and growth or drought that is different than what we have seen in the past. the droughts are more intense. and we are seeing it at different times of the year. so it's not that california hasn't experience catastrophic fire in previous decades. it's just that this is happening more intensely. our fire weather conditions are lasting for longer events and so are red flag warnings. (ken) and some of these issues may have to do with global warming... warm temperatures and dry weather in switzerland are having a massive impact on the nation's fish. between april and july, the country saw its lowest level of rainfall in nearly a century.( pam @ bam ) with rivers and creeks starting to run dry, officials have resorted to relocating fish to deeper bodies of water. in one area, fishing inspectors have conducted the process in 25 creeks -- stretching a total of roughly 21- point-seven miles.( ken @ bam ) biologists say if rain doesn't come soon, fish deaths in the area could reach levels

not seen since 20-03, when roughly 90-thousand fish died.
