( robin )breaking news this morning.... fire crews are still hard at work putting out the massive wildfire in shasta county. now this started on monday, but has since tripled in size. 3 firefighters were injured last night... and one person died who was operating a buldozer at the time. it's not clear what happened but the victim was not a cal-fire employee... but was hired to help fight the fire. at last check that fire has burned over 28-thousand acres and is only 6-percent contained. over a dozen home are now destroyed, and nearly 500 structures are threatened. evacuations are in order leaving thousdands of families displaced. those

evacuations grew much larger after the fire unexpectedly jumped the sacramento river. ( robin )in riverside county - a fast moving wildfire promted governor jerry brown to declare a state of emergency. the cranston fire is now threatening several communities east of los angeles. so far - 7,500 acres have burned.. and it is only 3-percent contained. officers say this fire was one of five fires intentially set. 32-year-old, brandon mcglover of temecula was arrested wednesday. ( robin )in mariposa county... thousands of homes and california's iconic yosemite national park .. are in danger.... that's after the ferguson fire changed direction. residents living in the area , say they feel uneasy as the fire grows to more than 44-thousand acres. one firefighter has died... and seven others have been injured on the job. forest officials say, high temperatures are making it challenging for crews ... as they have to take special precautions to stay safe. so

( robin )here in the bay area.... fire crews are still working to put out the marsh fire. it broke out near clayton wednesday afternoon. right now the fire is 75- percent contained. firefighters spent much of yesterday mopping up from the fire. strong winds propelled the blaze along marsh creek road... engulfing dry grass and brush... and forcing evacuations. many homes were saved... you can see them covered in fire retardent. ( robin ) roadblocks remain in effect for those along marsh creek road. while firefighters say, there is now a permineter around the fire.. more work must still be done before homeowners can return. california... and with the hot, dry weather the chances of a fire sparking suddenly are very high. that is the word from fire officials... and they are warning people to get prepared now. kron 4's justine waldman is in lafayette with the details. fire season is burning up flames destroyed a home in clayton wednesday.and a fire caused evacuations in concord in june.sot norm wouldn't burn until august september now it is april june and julyfire marshal robert marshall tells meit is not too late or too early for people to prepare for a destructive fire.take a look at these two properties one yard is clear from all brush and dead grass.the other is not.homes that do not have a 30 foot defensible space .. are at greater risk during a fire..sot only a spark away from a disaster in those cases the east bay hills are brown - dry and crisp.all of this is fuel just waiting to burn.the fire marshal recommends people clean gutters consistently and

have arrested a woman accused in the attempted kidnapping of a toddler. investigators say schauntel gomez went up to a woman while wearing a mask and forcibly tried to take that woman's grandchild. the transient allegedly hit the grandmother on the head and started threatening the mother. gomez then drove away without the child. police arrested gomez for attempted kidnapping, criminal threats, battery and possession of drug paraphernalia. ( robin )this morning... police are searching for 2 people who burglarized a palo alto coin store. 2 men in connection with the crime are now behind bars. it happened early saturday morning at the coin broker on el camino real. the business was closed at the time. once at the scene police spotted four men... who immediately ran as soon as they saw the officers. authorities were able to catch and arrest two of the suspects... 25-year-old jamal deshawn willie and 20-year-old jamel kenneth walker . arrested that individual driving the car right away">sot that is a concern for the san leandro police department as wellsot in san leandro haaziq madyun kron4news ( robin )san francisco mayor, london breed, took an impromptu tour of one of the grittiest parts of the city .. hoping to see what residents in these areas experience every day. the mayor talked to the director of the fix it program about the problems that exist south of market.... and what's being done to correct them. she walked several blocks around 6th street and mission to get a first hand look at the grime on the streets -- homelessness -- and the evidence of hypodermic needles that litter the ground.

( robin )police in fremont say they have arrested a man responsible for burglarizing several vehicles. police say they found the suspect by using license plate reading cameras. kron 4's charles clifford has details. the fremont police the fremont the fremont police department says that 21-year-old hayward resident armani phillips is in custody facing multiple charges including 3 counts of burglary. this all started back on july 9th, when fremont police responded, here, to the parking lot of city sports

along farwell place on reports of multiple vehicles being burglarized. the suspect apparently took a wallet, bank cards and a laptop from at least one car. after reviewing surveillance video, police determined that the suspect was driving a grey volvo. they then checked licensce plate reading cameras along nearby mowry avenue and found a grey volvo leaving the area around the time of the burglaries. after running the license plate they determined that the car was registered to phillips and that he had an extensive criminal history.sot and is currently out on bail for a crime in another city in alameda county where a firearm was used. so we knew we had a violent offender coming into our city.armani phillips was taken into custody on july 20th near his home in hayward. police say that a stolen handgun was found in his possesion at the time of the arrest. he is now being held at the santa rita jail on multiple charges.sotwe've connected him to 5 auto burglaries in our city. we think we have him on others. we found property in residence

( robin ) right now... police are investigating a shooting threat made at a veterans affairs campus in palo alto. it happened on miranda avenue near page mill road. police responded to reports of an active shooter thursday morning. officials say, they swept the campus but did not find anything. a spokesperson says the campus resumed regular activities an hour later. police say they do not know who made the threat but take them very seriously. ( robin )chp in napa arrested a man for child pornography and sexual exploitation of a child last week. the suspect... 43-year-old kenyatta norwood, was pulled over by police for speeding on highway 29. the officers discovered that norwood is on parole... and they say he was driving a stolen vehicle.

when police did a further search, they found digital media depicting child pornography and child molestation. the children depicted in the pornographic acts were later rescued by chp. norwood is being held without bail in napa county jail and is scheduled to enter a plea on august first. ( robin )san bruno police offices will soon start carrying narcan. the life saving drug is often used to reverse opioid overdoses. it can be injected into muscle, or veins... or can be used as a nasal spray. the narcan kits will be issued to sworn officers in the department within the next few weeks. san mateo county recorded a small number of opioid overdose deaths in 20- 17... with most occurring in the rural areas of the county. ( robin )a man is behind bars... accused of driving a stolen back-hoe. it happened wednesday afternoon in concord. officers followed the backhoe through the city for 20 minutes...

closing various roads out of a concern for safety. the man ended up on willow pass road. the driver eventually stopped and was taken into custody on suspicion of auto theft and evading police. investigators determined that the backhoe was stolen... and officers returned it to the rental company. ( robin ) imagine being woken up by a stranger asking for your wifi. a couple in palo alto called the police when a teenager broke into their house and then asked for their wifi password. this happened on east charleston road. police say the couple was asleep in their room when a masked teen woke them up and asked to use the internet. the male victim then shoved the teen out of the house... no one was injured. police arrested the boy on suspicion of felony residential burglary, prowling and providing false information to an officer. he is being held in santa clara county juvenile hall. experimental alzheimer's drug is stirring up hope after early testing. american biotechnology company - biogen and a japanese drugmaker said the drug... which is an anti-body... reduced the formulation of new clusters in the brain... and it reduced existing clusters by an average of 70 - percent. the buildup of plaque in the brain... is a hallmark of alzheimer's disease. experts are "cautiously optimistic" the results will be duplicated in future clinical trials. in favor of starbucks employees who say they should be paid for tasks like closing down the store. the ruling states that workers must be paid for routine tasks they traditionally do off the clock... including locking up or setting a store alarm. initially the district court had rejected the lawsuit saying time spent on those tasks is minimal. however the ruling was unanimous and a big victory for hourly workers. it means other companies will have to do the same thing. ( robin )coca-cola is raising its prices.... in response to the impact of president trump's recent tariffs. coke says, the price hike is meant to compensate for increases in delivery costs and metal prices. it comes after trump imposed billions of dollars in tariffs on chinese goods earlier this year. coke is one of many ... caught in the cross fire of rising u-s trade tensions with china, mexico, canada, and the european union. ( sara ) that's right - the carr fire is burning fast and out of control this morning in shasta county. we now know the man who died on the fire lines was a bulldozer operator who was a private contractor - crews found his body late last night. plus - at least three other firefighters are recovering from burn injuries right now. at last check - the fire has burned nearly 29- thousand acres and is only six percent contained. 15 structures have burned down and nearly five hundred are threatened. governor jerry brown has issued a state of emergency for the carr fire. the 45-square mile fire that sparked on monday seemed to be in control - until last night when the

( james ) coca-cola is raising its prices in response to the impact of president trump's recent tariffs. coke says the price hike is meant to compensate for increases in delivery costs and metal prices. it comes after trump imposed billions of dollars in tariffs on chinese goods earlier this year. coke is one of many caught in the cross fire of rising u-s trade tensions with china, mexico, canada, and the european union. tariffs on steel and aluminum are having an impact on companies including whirlpool, g-m, ford, and fiat-chrysler. ( terisa ) the califonria supreme court is ruling in favor of starbucks employees. workers must be paid for routine tasks they do off the clock including locking up or setting a store alarm. the ruling was unanimous and a big

terisa ) 1 person has died... and 3 firefighters are hurt. kron 4's sara stinson joins us live in studio with the latest. sara... ( sara ) we now know the man who died on the fire lines was a bulldozer operator who was a private contractor - crews found his body late last night. and at least three other firefighters are recovering from burn injuries right now. take a look at the video - the carr fire exploded over night and continues to burn out of control this morning in shasta county. thousands of people are evacuated right now. at last check - the fire has burned nearly 29- thousand acres and is only six percent contained. cal fire's last report shows 15 structures have been destroyed and nearly five hundred are threatened, but since the over night growth that number is expected to climb into the thousands. governor jerry brown has issued a state of emergency for the carr fire. take a look at this new map of the carr fire...you can see just how close it is to the city of redding...as it

tripled in size just hours ago. the city has a population of 92-thousand people, but we don't have an exact number of how many people have been forced to evacuate just yet. a cal fire spokesperson says the carr fire is taking down anything in it's path. just this morning - the fire jumped the sacramento river forcing shasta lake city to evacuate leaving thousands of families displaced. we expect to get an update on the acres burned throughout the night and into the morning - plus just how many people have been forced to evacuate. we'll bring you the latest right here on the kron 4 morning news. back to you. ( james ) with many fires raging across the state.. fire officials want people to start protecting their homes now instead of waiting for when it could be too late. according to officials... fires are normally a problem in august and september but this year they have been dealing with fires since april. fire marshall robert marshall says its not too late or too early to prepare for a fire. he

spent hours at the farm. they are treating this as a criminal case and they have been since the beginning. mollie tibbetts has been missing for more than a week. her brother is the last family member to see her alive. he says he dropped her off at her boyfriend's house last wednesday. ( terisa ) c-h-p in napa have arrested a man for child pornography and sexual exploitation of a child. the suspect... kenyatta norwood... was pulled over by police for speeding on highway 29. the officers say norwood.. who is a parolee... was driving a stolen car. during a search... officers found digital media depicting child pornography and molestation. the children depicted in the pornographic acts were later rescued by c-h-p. ( terisa ) two men are behind bars in connection with a burglary at a palo altcoin store. it happened early saturday morning at the coin broker on el camino real. the business was closed at the time. once at the scene police spotted four men... who

immediately ran as soon as they saw the officers. but authorities were able to catch and arrest two of the suspects -- jamal deshawn willie and jamel kenneth walker . police are still searching for the two other men. ( james ) in the east bay... more students are graduating high school on time. that is according to the california department of education. according to state officials the oakland unified school district saw their graduation rate increase by nearly 5%. in 2017 the district had a graduation rate of more than 70%. district officlas say not only are more students graduating on time but fewer students are dropping out as well. tour of one of the grittiest parts of the city. the mayor says she wanted to see what people in these areas experience every day. the mayor talked to the director of the "fix it" program about the problems that exist south of market... and what's being done to correct them. she walked several blocks around 6th street and mission to get a first hand look at the grime on the streets -- homelessness -- and the hypodermic needles that litter the ground. ( james ) the mayor is proposing safe injection sites to get needles and addicts off the streets while also giving them a place where they can ask for help getting clean. she's hoping to make safe injection sites a reality by the end of the year. ( terisa ) disney is ditching the straw. it will stop using single-use plastic straws and plastic
