(vicki) breaking news tonight... bay area firefighters have joined the battle to save the city of redding from a tornado of flames.the explosive carr fire has entered the city's western neighborhods ... more than 5=thousand homes are in its path.thanks for joining us. i'm vicki liviakis.(grant)and i'm grant lodes.the four=day old wildfire has spread to 44=thousand acres and claimed the lives of two firefighters. containment has dropped to just three percent. paul vercammen is in redding with the latest on the car fire. night.(grant) kron4's maureen kelly talked to that department's chief who describes what happened. the injured firefighters are part of a five engine strike team with a total of 17 firefighters from the marin county fire dept. they'd been battling the blaze focusing on structure protection and rescue since 1am thursday.....they were still going at 8pm that night....defending a structure when the three firefighers were overcome with a blast of heat.the fire made a pretty significant run, the quick action of the company officer there he was able to get his firefighters into the engine to take refuge unfortunately before that occurred three of them sustained vert burns from minor to moderate,all three were treated at a hospital up in redding two were treated and released....one fireigher who suffered a significant burn to his face was transferred to uc davis burn unit for further evaluation.as scary as that incident was....chief jason weber knows full well that other departments have suffered greater losses fighting this fire.he wears a black band across his badge in honor of the two firefighters who lost their lives in the carr fire. we're quite fortunate that the injury is a relatively minor, our hearts absolutely go out to the families of the two that were lost on that fire. cal fire has done an excellent job of managing these incidents across the state

grown to more than 45-thousand acres. and now people living in the area say they feel uneasy. one firefighter has died and seven others have been injured on the job. forest officials say high temperatures are making it challenging for crews... as they have to take special precautions to stay safe.jim mackensen: "obviously, like with anybody, when it's hot like this you just have to move a lot slower. you can't go at the same tempo as you would if it was a cooler day. so, it requires the folks to take more breaks, they have to carry more stuff. it's not unusual for a crew member that's working with a hand tool ... they're going to go through two to three gallons of water a day." last sunday's murder of nia wilson at the macarthur bart station has once again raised questions about the overall safety of the transit systemsot while opinions are mixed as to whether the transit system is safe... recent statistics show violent crime on the upswing. last year alone there were over 400 acts of violence. for the first 6 months of this year, overall violent crime is up 2% compared with the same period last year, with assaults up 28%sot bevan dufty/bart board director 37-47 one of the biggest complaint among riders is a lack of police presencesot175 patrol officers a budgeted but bart still has 21 vacancies despite hiring 27 officers in last year and a half. dufty says the board might have to consider another alternative. sot sot alternative. sot

5... it's coyote season in san francisco... and, this morning, a coyote was seen walking with it's breakfast in mouth in north beach.(grant) kron four's philippe djegal shares video of the animal and how neighbors and tourists react to the rare sighting. (philippe) a neighbor does a double take, then turns on his phone and starts recording what he realizes is a coyote taking a strole down jones street near chestnut street in san francisco's north beach neighborhood./tourist- "did you say coyotes? that is terrifying." the sighting happened just before six o'clock in the morning. tourists in the area had no clue coyote's live nearby. warning signs are posted up at

pioneer park near coit tower. it appears this coyote was hungry -- seen walking away with what looks like a rat in it's mouth.natalie batlin/neighbor- "it actually made me feel really sad that the coyotes have to come into these neighborhoods to get food." coyote's rarely attack humans, though it has happened. and, over time, they have become more aggressive towards us. their preferred prey are smaller animals like cats and dogs.natalie batlin/neighbor- "usually, they're sighted in the presidio, um, i walk small dogs, so i would definitely just go the opposite direction, or try to get them in the car as soon as possible." a year ago, a woman witnessed a coyote kill her dog in the ingleside neighborhood. san francisco animal care and control estimates there are several dozen coyotes living in the city. long-time neighbors like jan blum don't mind them.jan blum/neighbor- "the thing that you always do with an animal like that is you make yourself as large as possible and make as much noise as possible to scare them off. they really don't want to interact with people." animal care and control says it's illegal to round up coyotes and take them elsewhere. adding that there are no plans to do so. in san francisco, philippe djegal, kron four news.

(grant) a boy nearly died at a santa cruz county beach after he got trapped in the sand last weekend.(vicki) reporter ashley keehn talked to the hero lifeguard who was able to save the day. ryan springer/lifeguard: "we got to the scene it was pretty hectic, a lot of people screaming."ryan springer was one of the first lifeguards to respond saturday.she says they were alerted about a boy who had become trapped in the sand after a tunnel he was digging collapsed on him.ryan springer/lifeguard: "when we got to our patient and did our first check, our primary assessment we like knew what we had to do."when crews got to the boy he was unconscious, not breathing and had no pulse. springer says that's when her training kicked in and is ultimately what helped save that little boys life..ryan springer/lifeguard: "on the last day of training i remember we had a sand entrapment scenario, so we were all doing some kind of test or something and then one of the instructors runs up to us and is like there's someone buried in the sand! and we all ran down, dug up this mannequin, like the formation that we had like learned through training and then we started cpr on the was pretty helpful for this call i would

(grant) as kron four's rob fladeboe reports now from san jose, cannabis, formerly known as marijuana, is big business and getting bigger all the time. you are looking at one of the fastest growing, soon to be among the most lucrative industries in california and beyond. for the third consecutive day, thousands of people are here at the san jose mcenery convention center for the cannabis business summit and expo. what amazes here is how fast the cannabis industry has grown, just six months after recreational cannabis became legal in california. it brings to mind the tech boom of the early 80's says silicon valley cannabis president sean kali-rai.sean kali-rai/silicon valley cannabis alliance virtually overnight, there are cannabis related start-ups with innovative ideas to help eager entrereneurs grow, process and market a range of products from edibles to oils to business plans and financing. still facing some stigma with regard to health claims and obstacles like a

(grant) we are still keeping an eye on wildfires burning throught the state of california.(vicki) the carr fire in shasta county has spread to 44 thousand acres now. there are widespread evacuations in place right now. (grant) this is a time lapse video of the fire taken in redding. the carr fire is only three percent contained. (vicki) the carr fire and the "cranston fire" in riverside county have both destroyed homes and structures, threatened critical infrastructure, and forced residents to evacuate. now governor jerry brown is declaring a state of emergency for both of these counties.

the cranston fire is currently burning more than 11 tousand acres and is only three percent contained. (grant) evacuation orders are still in place for the marsh fire -- burning in clayton.(vicki) but the fire is now 75- percent contained. kron 4's will tran joins us from clayton and tells us when firefighters expect to see full containment. will tran/clayton-calfire is still sitting at 75 percent containment. it was at 75 in the overnight hours as well but don't worry. calfire is making a lot of progress that full containment could happen by tonight or early tomorrow. they had to pull back some of their crews in the overnight hours because trees were falling..and given what's going on at the carr fire..calfire didn't want to see any firefighters injured or killed. mandatory evacuations could be lifted as the fire is no longer advancing. still at 247 acres. too early to tell the cause of the fire. some of the weary firefighters could be sent north to help with the carr firein clayton will tran kron 4 news tran kron 4 news in clayton

a new warning about blue-green algae. it was recently found in the lafayette reservoir. exposure to blue- green algae can result in rashes and eye irritation and other allergic reactions. in extreme cases at higher levels - people can become very sick and even die. dogs are especially vulnerable. no pets are allowed in the water. to stay cool and hydrated...officials recommend filling up on clean tap water...located at the reservoirs new bottle-filling station. (grant) two people are dead and two others injured after an overnight shooting in oakland. it happened just after 11:00 last night on the 24-hundred block of 73rd avenue. when officers arrived on scene they found 4 people suffering from gunshot wounds. two of them died. the other two are in the hospital. there is no word on their condition this morning. police are still looking for the shooter.
