( marty )breaking news this morning. the carr fire, burning in shasta county has driven nearly 38-thousand people from their homes. containment of the fire is still very low as firefighters struggle to put it out. kron 4's sara stinson joins us live in studio with the latest. sara? ( sara ) the carr fire in shasta county continues to burn out of control forcing tens of thousands of people to flee for their lives. currently - the small community of igo is evacuating...that is where the fire is roaring into right now. the town is nine miles west of redding. take a look at the flames - the fire has burned more than 48-thousand acres and is just five percent contained.two fire crew members have been killed while fighting this fire and three firefighters from marin county are recovering from burn injuries. cal fire says more than 500 structures have been

destroyed and that number is expected to rise.this after the fire jumped the sacramento river thursday night towards the city of redding.luckily last night crews say the fire was a bit calmer. but still the carr fire has already ripped through neighborhoods leaving people like the redding ppolice chief and 32 hospital employees without a home.

( marty )thanks sara. mandatory evacuations orders are in effect in mendocino county where two wildfires are burning this morning.this is new video... the river fire has now spread to over 8-thousand acres and is at zero containment. last night the mendocino county sheriff ordered mandatory evacuations in the hopland area.. all the way to the lake county line. the fire has destroyed one home and one other building. and the ranch fire, which is burning near ukiah has grown to one thousand acres. residents there are being urged to be ready to evacuate if that fire intensifies. ( marty )in southern california- a 32 year old man has been charged with intentionally starting nine fires, including the cranston fire in riverside county. it has burned over 12- thousand acres.. and its only 16-percent contained. the fire has destroyed five homes. close to 5-thousand buildings

are threatened and an estimated 7-thousand people have been evacuated. ( marty ) in the past two weeks, the ferguson fire has burned more than 46-thousand acres and because of poor air quality, yosemite valley will remain closed to visitors until next friday. almost 4-thousand firefighters are battling the flames. the fire is 29 percent contained. the ferguson fire also claimed the life of firefighter braden varney. ( marty )so far this year's fire season has been brutal... and there's no relief in sight. thousands of firefighters from cal fire and other local agencies are fighting blazes across the state... putting a major strain on resources. kron 4's charles clifford has that part of our coverage. as of friday, cal fire is dealing with at least 19 active wildfires spread all across the state. two of the largest include, the carr fire

near redding which has claimed two lives and destroyed dozens of buildings. and the cranston fire in riverside county which is now over 11,000 acres and only 3 percent contained. sotwe are all engaged. most of us are fighting a fire or actively at the fire right now.amy head with cal fire says that this fire season arrived early and has been relentless, putting a strain on cal fire and its people. sotfor a lot of people they have been going from fire to fire. so it's a pretty intense fire season so far and very early in the year to see this fire behaviour and fire activity that we are seeing. head says that with so many fires burning, cal fire has had to prioritize where to send resources.sotlife safety and life hazards are our number one priority so we have a lot of equipment at the carr fire and more enroute. there's a big life safety hazard.here in the bay area, fire fighting strike teams have been deployed from every county. on friday, 15 trucks and 3 command vehicles left san mateo county headed for redding. head says cal fire relys heavily on outside help. sotwe really rely on the mutual aid system. working with our state, local and federal partners. we could be getting firefighters from all across the state and even out

( marty ) ( marty ) in the east bay... police in pittsburg are investigating the city's first homicide. a 61-year-old man was shot in his home on olivewood drive friday morning.

he died at the scene. so f... police have made no arrests, but they say it looks like the victim knew his killer. ( marty ) a shooting in campbell sends one man to the hospital. now police are looking for the gunman. it happened at the corner of hamilton avenue and creekside way last night just before 8. the victim is in stable condition. ( marty ) two girls held at a migrant shelter in pleasant hill for about a month are now back with their parents. the girls were separated from parents at the border... under the government's zero tolerance policy. more than 18-hundred kids -- aged 5 and older -- were reunited with parents or sponsors before thursday's court ordered deadline. but officials say about 700 more remain separated... including about 430 children whose parents were deported. officials say those reunions will take more time, effort and paperwork. ( marty )for your health this morning... an experimental alzheimer's drug is prompting hope after early testing. american biotechnology company - biogen and a japanese drugmaker say the drug... which is an anti-body... reduced new clusters in the brain... and it reduced existing clusters by an average of 70 - percent. the buildup of plaque in the brain... is a hallmark of alzheimer's disease. experts are "cautiously optimistic" the results will be duplicated in future clinical trials. ( marty ) you might want to think twice before grabbing a late night snack. researchers looked at the eating habits of more than 15-hundred people with breast or prostate cancer. they also looked at the eating

habits of more than 2-thousand healthy people. the study revealed those who ate before 9:00 at night had a 20-percent lower risk for breast and prostate cancer compared to those who ate a late dinner-- or went to bed right after eating. doctors say more research is needed to understand the connection between meal times and cancer. morning... the carr fire burning in shasta county. it's charred more than 48- thousand acres and injured 3 marin fire firefighters. tyler barnes, scott pederson.... and brian cardoza are part of a five engine strike team. kron4's maureen kelly talked to their department's chief who describes what happened. we're quite fortunate that the injury are relatively minorthe injured firefighters are part of a five engine strike team with a total of 17 firefighters from the marin county fire dept. they'd been battling the blaze focusing on structure protection and rescue since 1am thursday.....they were still going at 8pm that night....defending a structure when the three firefighers were overcome with a blast of heat.the fire made a pretty significant run, the quick

action of the company officer there he was able to get his firefighters into the engine to take refuge unfortunately before that occurred three of them sustained vert burns from minor to moderate,all three were treated at a hospital up in redding two were treated and released....one fireigher who suffered a significant burn to his face was transferred to uc davis burn unit for further evaluation. chief jason weber who wears a black band across his badge for the two firefighters killed ...he says with the growing intensity of fires in california it's an important reminder to everyone to maintain defensible space around their properties.it's not just to protect their house or their neighbors house, it also gives us a fighting chance to put people in there are fighting fires ultimately to say those structures we need the space in order to workand not just in the summer....the cheif points out fire season has become a year round event in california.maureen kelly kron4 news. in shasta county, firefighters say the carr fire has spread to over 48-thousand acres, and is 5 percent contained. it's burning on highway 299 and carr powerhouse road. there are over 4-thousand structures threatened right now and 500 structures are burned. two firefighters have died battling the fire and three are recovering from injuries. mandatory evacuations are still in place. and reports say a mechanical failure of a car is determined to ( marty ) new numbers from cal fire on the ferguson fire in mariposa county... flames have burned more than 49-thousand acres. containment is still at 29 percent. because of poor air quality, yosemite valley will remain closed to visitors until next friday. almost 4-thousand firefighters are battling the flames. the ferguson fire has also claimed the life of firefighter braden varney. a construction worker with platinum pipeline was killed on the job after he was crushed by a trench that collapsed in on him at around 11:30 friday morning.he and another employee were inside the ditch as his team was getting ready to lay down a 24 inch storm drain pipe at a housing development site called the overlook in daly city...except only one got out. sot: clyde preston, north county fire authority// "they were attempting to leave the trench to put the pipe in then the one worker heard a noise behind him and that's when the collapse occurred."pg&e crews were called out to remove the danger of overhead power lines so emergency crews could get through....for the rest of the night two urban search and rescue teams carefully worked around the unstable ground to recover the body. neighbors say this construction site has been a burden since the project began about three months ago...and the tragedy makes it all the worse.sot: nazmeen kadir, neighbor// "it's just really noisy and inconvenient for us...it's shocking, just sad. and then the body is still in the ditch. it's sad."

realizes is a coyote taking a strole down jones street near chestnut street in san francisco's north beach neighborhood.ed lang/tourist- "did you say coyotes? that is terrifying." the sighting happened just before six o'clock in the morning. tourists in the area had no clue coyote's live nearby. warning signs are posted up at pioneer park near coit tower. it appears this coyote was hungry -- seen walking away with what looks like a rat in it's mouth.natalie batlin/neighbor- "it actually made me feel really sad that the coyotes have to come into these neighborhoods to get food." coyote's rarely attack humans, though it has happened. and, over time, they have become more aggressive towards us. their preferred prey are smaller animals like cats and dogs.natalie batlin/neighbor- "usually, they're sighted in the presidio, um, i walk small dogs, so i would definitely just go the opposite direction, or try to get them in the car as soon as possible." a year ago, a woman witnessed a coyote kill her dog in the ingleside

out of shasta county... the carr fire has nearly doubled in size to more than 80-thousand acres, and is 5 percent contained. it's burning on highway 299 and carr powerhouse road. almost 5-thousand structures are threatened and 500 have been destroyed. two firefighters have died battling the fire. mandatory evacuations are still in place. a mechanical failure of a car is the cause. across the state. two of the largest include, the carr fire near redding which has claimed two lives and destroyed dozens of buildings. and the cranston fire in riverside county which is now over 11,000 acres and only 3 percent contained. sotwe are all engaged. most of us are fighting a fire or actively at the fire right now.amy head with cal fire says that this fire season arrived early and has been relentless, putting a strain on cal fire and its people. sotfor a lot of people they have been going from fire to fire. so it's a pretty intense fire season so far and very early in the year to see this fire behaviour and fire activity that we are seeing. head says that with so many fires burning, cal fire has had to prioritize where to send resources.sotlife safety and life hazards are our number one priority so we have a lot of equipment at the carr fire and more enroute. there's a big life safety hazard.here in the bay area, fire fighting strike teams have been deployed from every county. on friday, 15 trucks and 3 command vehicles left san mateo county headed for redding. head says cal fire relys heavily on outside help. sotwe really rely on the mutual aid system. working with our state, local and federal partners. we could be getting firefighters from all across the state and even out of state.with no end in sight for california's fire season, cal fire is reminding everyone

morning... an experimental alzheimer's drug is prompting hope after early testing. american biotechnology company - biogen and a japanese drugmaker say the drug... which is an anti-body... reduced new clusters in the brain... and it reduced existing clusters by an average of 70 - percent. the buildup of plaque in the brain... is a hallmark of alzheimer's disease. experts are "cautiously optimistic" the results will be duplicated in future clinical trials. bay... police in pittsburg are investigating the city's first homicide. a 61-year- old man was shot in his home on olivewood drive friday morning. he died at the scene. so far... police have made no arrests, but they say it looks like the victim knew his ( marty ) a shooting in campbell sends one man to the hospital. now police are looking for the gunman. it happened at the corner of hamilton avenue and creekside way last night just before 8.

the victim is in stable condition. ( marty ) two girls held at a migrant shelter in pleasant hill for about a month are now back with their parents. the girls were separated from parents at the border... under the government's zero tolerance policy. more than 18-hundred kids -- aged 5 and older -- were reunited with parents or sponsors before thursday's court ordered deadline. but officials say about 700 more remain separated... including about 430 children whose parents were deported. officials say those reunions will take more time, effort and paperwork. ( marty ) the carr fire has also injured 3 marin county fire firefighters. tyler barnes, scott pederson.... and brian cardoza are part of a five engine strike team. kron4's maureen kelly talked to their department's chief who describes what happened. we're quite fortunate that the injury are relatively minorthe injured firefighters are part of a five engine strike team with a total of 17 firefighters from the marin county fire dept. they'd been battling the blaze focusing on structure protection and rescue since 1am thursday.....they were still going at 8pm that night....defending a structure when the three firefighers were overcome with a blast of heat.the fire made a pretty significant run, the quick action of the company officer there he was able to get his firefighters into the engine to take refuge unfortunately before that occurred three of them sustained vert burns from minor to moderate,all three were treated at a hospital up in redding two were treated and released....one fireigher who suffered a significant
