world come to ride the cable cars in san francisco... but sometimes people can cause them to get into accidents. kron 4's stanley roberts explains in this edition of people behaving badly. this is something you don't see too often, a cable car actually backing up (traffic sounds) so let me try to explain to you what's going on, you see on the ground is the yellow like and the words let go let go is not a metaphor. it's command for
4:41 am
the cable car operator you see at the corner of washington and mason there is a turn for the cable car but to make the turn the cable car has to build up speed to 9 and a half miles per hours so the cable car can coast around the corner because for that short distance if they don't reach that speed they can't make the turn and then the cable car has to be pushed you got that (naw man i want rolling awww man) during the coasting time the entire intersection goes from flashing red to solid red, which means everyone except the cable car must stop and remain stopped until the light goes back for flashing but that's not what happens this is ed cobean from the sfmta the issue that we have is that when the cable car is coming on mason to make the curb on to washington the autos have a tendency to blow the red light on a daily basis and this is our largest collision area
4:42 am
that we have on our cable car system this intersection has a problem with people not stopping, for example this cable car is coasting the intersection is solid red and apparently there is a big white truck also coasting through the same intersection instead of stopping but check out this tower tours bus, maybe some should have told the driver what flashing red light means catching people rolling through the red light rather solid or flashing red is pretty common but the try to make it safe what we've done is refresh the painting on all 4 sides of the crosswalk we made it brighter wider and the thought process behind that hopefully that the auto will see the crosswalks and stop short and maybe help them see the red lights at the intersection and it is working a little bit but maybe some ticket books will help a lot in san francisco stanley roberts kron 4 news (robin) coming up on the
