(robin) good morning and thanks for joining us for the kron 4 morning news. its wednesday august first..2018im robin winston.lets start this morning with a check on weather and traffic. temperatures today will be felt slightly cooler than yesterday with the most noticeable changes to be expected into the start of next week. along the coast 50's and 60's can be expected

continue to threaten thousands of acres across california.... forcing thousands of residents out of their homes. cal fire spread thin fighting 17 significant wildfires across the state. three of those in shasta, mariposa, and mendocino county. yesterday a third wildfire erupted in mendocino county.. the eel fire started near covelo. so far 865 acres have burned... and it doubled in size overnight. cal fire says it continues to spread. evacuations are happening for mendocino pass road. residents are cautioned that fire conditions change rapidly and emergency communications are difficult.

( robin )here are the latest numbers on the mendocino complex fire... those are the ranch and river fires. collectively they have burned more than 80-thousand acres and are only 12 percent contained. seven homes have been destroyed. more than 12-thousand others are threatened. containment of this fire isn't expected until at least next week. additional crews are helping reach that goal. cal fire is saying air quality is going to be bad.... and if you don't have to be outside-- stay inside or leave the area. kron 4's j-r stone took a trip to lake county... where he talked to those forced out of their homes. heavy smoke in both lake and mendocino counties on tuesday. for ralph redling and his wife therisa it's the second time in three years they've evacuated from their home.sot it's scary because if you look around the lake now half to three quarters of the lake circum... has burnedralph says

there was an advisory evacuation in effect for his neighborhood. not a mandatory one but they still chose to leave as his home is in a very smokey area. sot so you wonder when are they gonna get to my block this year or next year... tents were setup on tuesday at middletown high school...just over a month away from the schedueled start of school. denise cho was evacuated and is one of those here. she was evacuated from her home in nice, california. firefighters told her it's in a dangerous spot.sot that's what they said..once it comes up over the ridge it is gone...he said it would just go everyone hoping that firefighters get control of these flames. and hopeful that these evacuations don't continue to be a daily occurance.sot it's scary at times sometimes she gets

nervous sometimes i get nervous and we just hug and say hey if we're together that is all that matters everything else is replaceable. ( robin )that was kron 4s j-r stone reporting. ( robin )if you've been evacuated and are trying to get your mail-- delivery service in the evacuated areas of lake county have been stopped. all lake county evacuees-- both ranch and river fires-- can pick up their mail at the clearlake post office... 45-hundred olympic drive, clearlake. a photo identification will be required. they will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. regular mail delivery will resume when the evacuated areas become repopulated. ( robin )the lake county sheriff's office says its deputies are out in full force trying to prevent looters from raiding homes and businesses. authorities say over the past three days they have made six arrests of people who have been in evacuated areas.

most of the suspects were released with a citation. the sheriff's office wants to remind people if they live in an evacuated area... and chose not to leave, you must stay at your property and shelter in place. they say that will help law enforcement determine who should not be in the area. ( robin )over in shasta county - the carr fire continues to burn. cal fire considers this one of the most destructive fires in state history... based on homes, businesses and outbuildings that have been destroyed. almost one thousand homes are now ruined... and 112-thousand- acres have burned. right now this fire is only 30 percent contained. ( robin )collections for the carr fire victims continue in the bay area. collections started in the south bay on monday... and will be delivered to redding and carr fire victims today.

( robin )and in mariposa county.. the ferguson fire has burned more than 58 thousand acres. it is 33 percent contained. the fire in mariposa county has been burning for about two and a half weeks now. two firefighters were killed in this fire. one building has been destroyed... but no homes have burned. it has forced the closure of yosemite valley. we're now learning it will be closed through at least sunday august 5. advocates joined forces as safety escorts at bart stations across the east bay. this move comes after the string of deaths at bart stations within the last 2 weeks. kron 4's ali reid spoke to advocates... and has the story. this group of men decided to take a stand ... hoping with their work, the fatalities surrounding bart will stop.pkg at the richmond bart station ... safety escorts, we want you to feel safe tonight.a group of men volunteer walk anyone that may need their help.we could walk them down to the bart station, or to their cars. we just want them to know the community cares this comes after 4 people were recently found dead at different bart stations. i just cant even think about that we want to prevent those types of issues from re-occurring in the bay areanot everyone is willing to accept the offer at first glance.at first there's an apprehension, they don't

( robin )in world news... investigators are trying to determine the cause of a plane crash in mexico. more than four-dozen people were hospitalized, after the plane crashed shortly after takeoff. reporter andrew spencer has the latest. the aeromexico plane ended up in a field just beyond the runway. the flight, headed for mexico city, crashed just after takeoff from the guadalupe victoria international airport in durango, mexico -- more than 550 miles northwest of mexico city.the images from the crash site are striking. smoke rising off the wreckage of the plane. firefighters working to put out the flames. the red cross helping treat the injured, and get them transported to nearby hospitals.103 people were on board the aeromexico flight. anabel estrada was one of them. (nat sot of anabel estrada)she says she felt the plane hit the ground twice during the crash -- the second impact was stronger; she says that's when

her head hit the ceiling.then, she saw flames in the cabin in front of her.of the 99 passengers and four members of the flight crew, 49 people ended up in the hospital. amazingly, government officials say everyone on board survived.the most severe injuries appear to have been suffered by the pilot and one of the passengers; durango's governor said tuesday that both of them were in critical condition -- but they were stable.after the crash, officials with the airline said, "we deeply regret this accident, and the families of all those affected are in our thoughts."the plane that crashed was a embraer 190.the brazilian manufacturer said it was sending technicians to the crash site to help investigators determine why the plane crashed.i'm andrew spencer, reporting ( robin )in national news.... a federal judge has issued a stop the release of blueprints to make 3-d printed guns. the blueprints were supposed to be available to download online starting today... but

that plan is on hold for now. here is san francisco... gun control advocates were out waring people about the dangers of plastic 3-d printed guns yesterday. they say that this that could potentially avoid detection at metal detectors. san francisco supervisor catherine stefani says 3d-printed guns are a threat to the community and that she intends to introduce legislation this fall -- regulating ( robin ) again - initially, "defense distributed" ....was cleared to release the blueprints today. we reached out defense distributed ....but they did not immediately respond to our requests for a comment on this story. ( robin ) in milpitas -- two suspects accused of robbing kohl's have been arrested. it happened on great mall drive... and police say theyy were on the run for nearly a week. police say

miguel tovanche and carmen vargas were arrested after trying to take a cart full of merchandise out through an emergency exit in kohl's. that's when tovanche pulled out a gun and fired at loss prevention officers. the two ran from the officers and could not be found for nearly a week. milpitas police detectives caught up with the two in alameda. both suspects were brought back to santa clara county and booked at the jail for their outstanding warrants. ( robin )in the east bay... a kidnapping for ransom lands five men from the east coast behind bars. police tell kron 4 this type of incident is becoming a trend. kron4's haaziq madyun explains. a meeting between a 21- year-old man from the bay area and a five men from south carolina leads to a brutal kidnapping for ransom in the city of berkeley. police say they have seen this scenario beforesot

of an assault weapon and then some other related enhancements">investigators say this case is like other crimes involving the local victim connecting with the out -of-state- suspects online then arranging to buy or exchange merchandise in cities on the west coastsotin berkeley haaziq madyun kron4news ( robin )alameda police officers discovered a card reader and camera attached to an atm machine over the weekend. in addition to the card reading device, a face-plate equipped with a pin-hole camera was being used to capture customer's pin numbers. according to data, in 20-17 the number of manipulated atms and point- of-sales devices increased by 8-percent police say the best thing you can do to protect yourself is to take your transactions inside... and if you do decide to use the machine -- look before you insert your card. police are asking for your help in identifying a few thieves. here are some photos captured by surveillance cameras... the three suspects were all involved in a theft from safeway a couple days ago. a store employee followed the white male out of the store during the robbery... the suspect hopped in a white mercury sedan in which the other two suspects were in. the car's license plate number was covered by a taped on mcdonald's bag... but the employee was able to rip the bag off and get the plate number. if you have any information on these suspects or have seen their car, you're asked to contact police. ( robin )some of you may remember playland -- the amusement park that once sat alongside ocean beach in san francisco. it closed in 19-72 to make room for condos more than 40 years ago. now the museum- housing most of the fun and games that once sat on the beach... is also closing to make room for- ámore housing.kron4's michelle kingston has the story. ( darya ) a big story this morning... the fight to contain massive wildfires burning in northern california. ( james ) in shasta county... the carr fire is now the 7th most destructive wildfire in state history. the more than 100-thousand acre is 30-percent contained. meanwhile the mendocino complex fire is actually two fires that have combined... the twin fires are straddling mendocino and lake counties. ( darya ) and now there is a new threat firefighters have to deal with. the eel fire -- also burning in mendocino county -- is now 865 acres. the fire is burning just east of covelo. this fire started just before 3:30 yesterday afternoon. mandatory evacuations have been ordered. ( james ) the eel fire is burning just 40 miles north of the mendocino complex fire.

the ranch and river fires make up the mendocino complex fire. combined they've burned more than 80-thousand acres and are only 12 percent contained. 7 homes have been destroyed. but more than 12-thousand others are threatened. containment isn't expected until at least next week. kron 4's j-r stone talked to evacuees in lake county. heavy smoke in both lake and mendocino counties on tuesday. for ralph redling and his wife therisa it's the second time in three years they've evacuated from their home.sot it's scary because if you look around the lake now half to three quarters of the lake circum... has burnedralph says there was an advisory evacuation in effect for his neighborhood. not a mandatory one but they still chose to leave as his home is in a very smokey area. sot so you wonder when are they gonna get to my block this year or next year... tents were setup on tuesday at middletown high school...just

over a month away from the schedueled start of school. denise cho was evacuated and is one of those here. she was evacuated from her home in nice, california. firefighters told her it's in a dangerous spot.sot that's what they said..once it comes up over the ridge it is gone...he said it would just go everyone hoping that firefighters get control of these flames. and hopeful that these evacuations don't continue to be a daily occurance.sot it's scary at times sometimes she gets nervous sometimes i get nervous and we just hug and say hey if we're together that is all that matters everything else is replaceable. out in force... trying to stop looters. authorities say over the past two days they have made six arrests. but most people caught in evacuation zones were released with just a citation. ( darya ) in shasta county... the carr fire has now burned more than 112- thousand acres. that's an area bigger than denver. it's now the 7th most destructive wildfire in state history. the carr fire killed 6 people and destroyed 965 homes. more than 25-hundred buildings are threatened. containment is up to 30-percent. we are expecting new numbers from cal fire in about 2 hours. ( darya ) a big story this morning... investigators are trying to figure out what caused a plane to crash in mexico... just after take-off. more than four-dozen people were hospitalized. two people are in critical condition... but they are stable. no one died. 103 people were on board the aeromexico flight. one passenger says she felt the plane hit the ground twice during the crash -- the second impact was stronger. she then saw flames in the cabin. the plane's manufacturer says it is sending technicians to the crash site to help investigators determine why the plane crashed. ( darya ) police are searching for three men who allegedly ransacked a home in milpitas. the burglary happened on july 23... in the 1300 block of chewpon avenue. police say the men drove away in a black ford or toyota

community advocates joined forces as safety escorts at bart stations across the east bay. this comes after several recent homicides at bart stations within the last two weeks. at the richmond station... a group of men volunteered to walk with anyone who wanted their help. this comes after 4 people were recently found dead at several different bart stations. many bart riders we spoke to say they aprreciate the effort.

( darya ) uber and lyft have agreed to let the city of san francisco tax part of their revenues. the ride-hail tax will go toward payingfor transportation infrastrucure across the city. the decision will place a 3% tax on single-use rides and a 1-point-5 percent tax on shared carpool rides. the tax is expected to bring in 30 million dollars over the first few years. remains of u-s soldiers killed in the korean war are on their way back to the united states from north korea. this is new video this morning out of south korea... showing the remains being carried onto a plane. vice president mike pence will meet that plane in hawaii later today. last week 55 cases of remains were delivered from north korea to the u-s base in south korea. u-s officials say it could take years to identify all of the soldiers. ( james ) a federal judge in seattle has issued a temporary restraining order to stop the release of blueprints to make 3-d-printed plastic guns. those guns are untraceable and undetectable. 8 attorneys general filed a lawsuit... arguing the 3-d guns would be a safety risk. the company behind the plans had reached a settlement with the federal government in june... that allowed it to make the plans for the guns available for download today. but the restraining order puts that plan on hold for now. ( james ) new this morning... we are learning more about the missing college student in iowa who is originally from the bay area. friends say mollie tibbetts was planning to travel to the dominican republic this week for a wedding. tibbett's boyfriend had joked with his brother about proposing to her at the wedding. tibbetts has been missing for more than a week. her brother is the last family member to see her alive when he dropped her off at her boyfriend's house on july 18th. her boyfriend has been ruled out as a suspect. ( darya ) in milpitas -- two people accused of stealing from a kohl's have been arrested. police say miguel tovanche and carmen vargas took a cart full of merchandise through an emergency exit in kohl's. when store security chased after them... tovanche pulled out a gun and fired. milpitas police detectives caught up with the two in alameda a week later. ( james ) sebastopol police are asking for your help in identifying a few thieves. here are some photos captured by surveillance cameras. the three stole from a safeway a couple days ago. a store employee found the thieves out of the store and watched them get into a car. the car's license plate number was

( darya ) in shasta county... the carr fire has now burned more than 112- thousand acres. that's an area bigger than denver. it's now the 7th most destructive wildfire in state history. the carr fire killed 6 people and destroyed 965 homes. more than 25-hundred buildings are threatened. containment is up to 30-percent. we are expecting new numbers from cal fire in about 2 hours. morning... a health alert has been issued for salads and wraps that were sold at popular grocery stores including trader joe's and walgreens. the u-s department of food safety says the salads may have been contaminated with a parasite that can cause intestinal illness. the salads... which contained certain beef... pork and poultry... all had "best by" dates between july 18th and july 23rd. but doctors say it could take more than a week before people start feeling the symptoms. the symptoms include weight loss... stomach cramps... vomiting... headache and fever. the illness can last for a few days to a few months and be treated with antibiotics. for a list of the products affected you can visit our website at kron 4 dot com. threw him on the ground while riding bart. sibia is suing bart for negligencesince the injuries to his wrist and neck prevent him from doing his job driving for uber.this lawsuit is the latest in a series of suits filed against the transit agency. ( james ) a federal judge in seattle has issued a temporary restraining order to stop the release of blueprints to make 3-d-printed plastic guns. those guns are untraceable and undetectable. 8 attorneys general filed a lawsuit... arguing the 3-d guns would be a safety risk. the company behind the plans had reached a settlement with the federal government in june... that allowed it to make the plans for the guns available for download today. but the restraining order puts that plan on hold for now. this ... two mountain lions were caught on camera coming right up to a home in san diego.people in the area also reported seeing the big cats closer to other homes and businesses. one natural disaster expert thinks wildfires may be driving them out of the mountains. arrested. police say miguel tovanche and carmen vargas took a cart full of merchandise through an emergency exit in kohl's. when store security chased after them... tovanche pulled out a gun and fired. milpitas police detectives caught up with the two in alameda a week later.
