and is now the sixth most destructive fire in california history.other major wildfires burning across california include the ferguson fire burning nearing yosemite national park, and the mendocino complex.authorities and forecasters both say residents should expect things to get worse before they get better.natasha chen, redding, california

(grant) now to the ferguson fire burning in mariposa county. it has now burned more than 62- thousand acres and is 39- percent contained. this fire has been burning for about two and a half weeks now. two firefighters

were killed in this fire. one building has been one building has been destroyed... but no homes have burned. the fire has also forced the closure of yosemite valley...through at least sunday.sunday. (vicki) a health advisory remains in effect in solano county... where smoke, mostly from the mendocino complex fires, has engulfed the area for days on end. kron four's philippe djegal reports from vacaville where people are doing their best, dealing with smoky skies. y- "oh, gosh its awful." tom stuart lives just east of sacramento... and, says he's taking a road trip to the coast to get away from the smoke.tom stuart/passerby- "the smoke is backing up in in the valley. i'm kind of at the edge of the foothills right there between placerville and folsom, and um, gosh you sit there all day long and your eyes burn and itch and all that good stuff." the smoke advisory issued by the solano county public health department tuesday remains in effect. warning that outdoor activities should be avoided or reduced until the skies clear up. especially for those with heart conditions... or, respiratory issues like lee singleton in vacaville.lee singleton/asthmatic- "you know, a lot of ash in the air, you know, making it a little difficult to breathe, but you know, just keep an inhaler and try to stay inside, keep thr a/c running and, um, helps out a lot." the health department says children are especially at risk for negative effects from exposure to wildfire smoke and ash... mainly because their lungs are still growing. most of the smoke in solano county is coming from the mendocino complex fires.kristina kawczynski/passerby- "it's just, you know, such a terrible time, i know its summer vacation still for a

but the launch of a new charter school in the south bay has hit a snag. kron four's rob fladeboe joins us now live from san jose to explain what'sgoing on. rob? than two weeks since 23 people on a hawaiian tour boat were injured by a lava bomb. the tourists were in kapoho bay, trying to get a closer look at kilauea's eruption -- when a flying hunk of lava hit the vessel. manolo morales checked in with one of the victims -- a young illinois woman named jessica tilton. jessica tilton/lava accident victim: "everything just went black and ... you didn't see anything. you just felt like you were suffocating and i thought i was dying."tilton describes the lava rocks combined with ash as a cloud that overcame the left side of the tour boat. she was sitting closest to the railing, and says she leaned over to protect her sister sitting right next to her, when a lava rock about two feet in

joining us on the phone now is scott mclean with cal fire. scott, give us the latest update. australia and new zealand are sending 146 firefighters and fire managers to help their counterparts in the western united states.the u.s. national interagency fire center said wednesday it requested the help because its resources are stretched thin. the two countries are sending supervisors, safety officers, heavy equipment and helicopter managers, helicopter crew members and structure

protection specialists.they're expected to arrive at the interagency fire center in boise, idaho, late this week and then be deployed after a one-day orientation.this is the seventh season since 2000 that australia and new zealand have sent firefighters to the united states. the u.s. sent firefighters to australia in 2003, 2007, 2009 and 2010.a disaster relief organization says it's preparing to send respiratory masks, hygiene kits and other first aid supplies to help thousands of people displaced by a massive wildfire in northern california.americares said wednesday it is working with a local health center in redding, california, where 38,000 residents were displaced by the blaze. thousands have been allowed to return home, but the hardest-hit areas in impoverished lake county remain out of reach.americares says the shipment will help families to protect their health.red cross spokesman stephen walsh says the organization has five shelters opened, though he says some people are starting to return home.the wildfire burning and polluting the air since july 23 has destroyed more than 1,000 homes. it was 34 percent contained wednesday.california gov. jerry brown says the state will spend whatever it takes to fight wildfires ravaging california that have wiped out more than 1,000 homes and killed eight people so far. just a month into the budget year, the state has already spent one quarter of its annual fire budget, at least $130 million.brown said wednesday that the state's funding is in good economic shape thanks to a robust rainy

carrying 103 people crashed just after taking off from an airport in northern mexico yesterday. new video tonight shows the frightening moments just before and after the crash. (ken) passengers escaped via the emergency slides minutes before the aircraft went up in flames. durango officials say it appears that a strong wind brought down flight 2431.

no one died...but more than four dozen people were hospitalized. one of the passengers -- a priest from chicago -- suffered a broken arm."well to be honest with you i thought that was it. i'm just very glad that we weren't able to climb any higher, or fly any faster. i think that would've made the biggest difference." (justine) the coast guard announced today during its investigation of the duck boat incident in missouri... the tour boat violated inspection. the vessel sank back in july killing 17 people who were on board. the coast guard discovered the boat could only handle winds up to 35 miles per hour. and while the boat started the excursion in calm conditions... investigators said the wind speed at the

time of the accident was more than 70 miles per hour. (justine) silicon silicon valley is backing off the per employee tax... for now. the cupertino city council voted on tuesday to let voters decide in 20-20. the tax would have produced nearly ten million dollars a year to help relieve traffic. the tax was specifically geared toward the city's largest employer, apple, which pushed back at the tax. currently the tech company employes more that 24-thousand people. mountain view placed a similar tax on google with no objection. that will create 6-million dollars for transit and housing. (ken) wells fargo has agreed to pay a 2-billion dollar fine to settle claims it misled investors about subprime mortgage loans sold between 2005 and 2007. the

collapse of the subprime mortage market let to the financial crisis of 2008. however the san francisco based company did not admit to any wrongdoing in the settlement. the bank has been under fire in more recent years for other practices... such as opening accounts without customers knowledge, charging for unnecessary car insurance... and alleged overdraft fee charges.
