three of her family members. the wildfires burning across northern california are raging on and there is no sign of slowing down. hello i'm vicki liviakis. (grant) and i'm grant lodes. the most destructive fire burning tonight is in shasta and trinity counties. that's the carr fire burning near redding tonight. so far it has burned over one-thousand homes-- and e burned. let's go live chen is standing by with an update. natasha? thousands of firefighters are battling more than a dozen wildfires that are burning across california -- with officials saying they're likely going to get worse before they get better. natasha chen is in redding, california where the carr fire has destroyed more than 115- thousand acres. california officals are saying that all hands are on deck in the fight against 16 wildfires that have already burned at least 320- thousand acres across the state.the carr fire, burning near redding, california, has killed at least six people,

and is now the sixth most destructive fire in california history.other major wildfires burning across california include the ferguson fire burning nearing yosemite national park, and the mendocino complex.authorities and forecasters both say residents should expect things to get worse before they get better.natasha chen, redding, california

(grant) and a new fire is burning in mendocino county. this one is called the "eel" fire... and it broke out yesterday afternoon near covelo. so far it has burned 865 acres. we are expected to get updated numbers on this fire shortly. mandatory evacuations mandatory shortly. this fire shortly. mandatory evacuations are in place. (grant) now to the ferguson fire burning in mariposa county. it has now burned more than 62- thousand acres and is 39- percent contained. this fire has been burning for about two and a half weeks now. two firefighters

(vicki) a health advisory remains in effect in solano county... where smoke, mostly from the mendocino complex fires, has engulfed the area for days on end. kron four's philippe djegal reports from vacaville where people are doing their best, dealing with smoky skies. y- "oh, gosh its awful." tom stuart lives just east of sacramento... and, says he's taking a road trip to the coast to get away from the smoke.tom stuart/passerby- "the smoke is backing up in in the valley. i'm kind of at the edge of the foothills right there between placerville and folsom, and um, gosh you sit there all day long and your eyes burn and itch and all that good stuff." the smoke advisory issued by the solano county public health department tuesday remains in effect. warning that outdoor activities should be avoided or reduced until the skies clear up. especially for those with heart conditions... or, respiratory issues like lee singleton in vacaville.lee singleton/asthmatic- "you know, a lot of ash in the air, you know, making it a little difficult to breathe, but you know, just keep an inhaler and try to stay inside, keep thr a/c running and, um, helps out a lot." the health department says children are especially at risk for negative effects from exposure to wildfire smoke and ash... mainly because their lungs are still growing. most of the smoke in solano county is coming from the mendocino complex fires.kristina kawczynski/passerby- "it's just, you know, such a terrible time, i know its summer vacation still for a

weaken the high pressure and move it further east. highs tomorrow will be in the mid to upper 80s inland, 70s and 80s around the bay and patchy fog at the coast will keep highs there in the 50s to low 60s. lows tonight will be cooler and actually slip into the 40s in the north bay. it may warm slightly with plenty of sunshine on friday before it coole below normal this weekend. high pressure will strengthen again next week to bring hot weather inland again. but the launch of a new charter school in the south bay has hit a snag. kron four's rob fladeboe joins us now live from san jose to explain what'sgoing on. rob? (rob live) im here at "allen at steinbeck school in south san jose. for a while there it looked like steinbeck would be sharing it's facilities with a brand new public charter school, but now that's not going to happen. heres more. yolanda bernal-samano/promise charter school parent "....we were definitely very excited about opening promise academy...."yolanda bernal-samano and some 200 other families have enrolled their children in the new promise academy public charter school, which was offered space here at allen at steinbeck school, to open this fall, but now that's not going to happen.yolanda-bernal- samano "....were disappointed

a bus, bt the charter school or it's families would have to would have to pay for it,no different than other public school families. barring a change of heart on one side or the other, it looks like the promise charter families will send their kids back to their neighborhood schools this fall. live in san jose rob fladeboe kron4 news. a health alert has been issued for salads and wraps that were sold at popular grocery and drug stores including trader joe's and walgreens. the u-s department of food safety says the salads may have been contaminated with a parasite that can cause intestinal illness. the salads... which contained certain beef... pork and poultry...

(grant) celebrating a bay area icon. today was a day to remember and feflect on dwight clark's remarkable life. people packed grace catherdral in san francisco today. the 49ers receiver... best known for "the catch" died after a long battle with als back in june. kron4's maureen kelly as he was remembered by the team's former owner and his teammates. one of the most striking moments was when team's pastor asked for all of dwight clark's former teammates and coaches to come up to the alter at grace catherdral.... those in attendence said he

speaks to the man they were there to honor.....dwight clark. i think it was an impact of a life well lived can i have can have on so many people and even as a business it is rough and tough and cutthroat as professional football i think it just speaks to the man that he was off the field it was on the field that he cemented his place in sports history and his status as beloved hero in the hearts of 49ers fans with the catch in 1982 during the nfc championship. a touchdown that helped the niners beat the then seemingly unstoppable dallis cowboys and put the team on the road to their first of five superbowl victories. he was remembered by former quaterback joe montana and as loyal teammate and humble and funny man.the one thing he would always say to me though, you know they don't call it the throw. in ending i will say do you do you see, yes that's true my friend and i will catch you on the other side, i love you and i miss you and it was a pleasure having you in my life the team's former owner, eddie debartalo says als took a lot from the star player...but not everything.i couldn't break his spirit and i didn't dare touch his heart and his great smile. i'm so very thankful that i've had so many moments he left me to cherish, how many of us can say that our best moments where as magnificent as histhe candlestick goal post where clark made history is now installed on debartalo's ranch in montana.(standup) some of dwight clarks'a ashes have been scattered there....at a stone placed near that goal

than two weeks since 23 people on a hawaiian tour boat were injured by a lava bomb. the tourists were in kapoho bay, trying to get a closer look at kilauea's eruption -- when a flying hunk of lava hit the vessel. manolo morales checked in with one of the victims -- a young illinois woman named jessica tilton. jessica tilton/lava accident victim: "everything just went black and ... you didn't see anything. you just felt like you were suffocating and i thought i was dying."tilton describes the lava rocks combined with ash as a cloud that overcame the left side of the tour boat. she was sitting closest to the railing, and says she leaned over to protect her sister sitting right next to her, when a lava rock about two feet in

joining us on the phone now is scott mclean with cal fire. scott, give us the latest update. australia and new zealand are sending 146 firefighters and fire managers to help their counterparts in the western united states.the u.s. national interagency fire center said wednesday it requested the help because its resources are stretched thin. the two countries are sending supervisors, safety officers, heavy equipment and helicopter managers, helicopter crew members and structure

protection specialists.they're expected to arrive at the interagency fire center in boise, idaho, late this week and then be deployed after a one-day orientation.this is the seventh season since 2000 that australia and new zealand have sent firefighters to the united states. the u.s. sent firefighters to australia in 2003, 2007, 2009 and 2010.a disaster relief organization says it's preparing to send respiratory masks, hygiene kits and other first aid supplies to help thousands of people displaced by a massive wildfire in northern california.americares said wednesday it is working with a local health center in redding, california, where 38,000 residents were displaced by the blaze. thousands have been allowed to return home, but the hardest-hit areas in impoverished lake county remain out of reach.americares says the shipment will help families to protect their health.red cross spokesman stephen walsh says the organization has five shelters opened, though he says some people are starting to return home.the wildfire burning and polluting the air since july 23 has destroyed more than 1,000 homes. it was 34 percent contained wednesday.california gov. jerry brown says the state will spend whatever it takes to fight wildfires ravaging california that have wiped out more than 1,000 homes and killed eight people so far. just a month into the budget year, the state has already spent one quarter of its annual fire budget, at least $130 million.brown said wednesday that the state's funding is in good economic shape thanks to a robust rainy

alameda police officers discovered a card reader with a camera attached to it on an a-t-m. these are pictures of the a-t-m. police say a pinhole camera was being used to record people's pin numbers. experts say that the number of a-t-m's being targeted by these types of devices has increased by nearly 10% in a year. (vicki) in the south bay... police are searching for three men who ransacked a home in milpitas. this video surveillance of the burglary shows three men at the scene. the burglary happened last monday on the 1300 block of chewpon avenue. police say the men drove away in a black ford or toyota pickup truck. ford or toyota pickup truck. the story. this group of men decided to take a stand ... hoping with their work, the fatalities surrounding bart will stop.pkg at the richmond bart station ... safety escorts, we want you to feel safe tonight.a group of men volunteer walk anyone that may need their help.we could walk them down to the bart station, or to their cars. we just want them to know the community cares this comes after 4 people were recently found dead at different bart stations. i just cant even think about that we want to prevent those types of issues from re-occurring in the bay areanot everyone is willing to accept the offer at first glance.at first there's an apprehension, they don't know what we're doing. as the days went by they saw us and were more receptivebut there are definitely those who appreciate it.sometimes i don't feel safe anymore and i come home latei thought, what a great thing to do. what a wonderful community thing to do. it exemplifies what a great community we live in after helping out in richmond, the safety escorts headed over to el cerrito del norte. it

(grant) you have to love this news if you are a football fan... the first game of the year is tomorrow night when the bears and ravens meet in the hall of fame game. as for our bay area teams, they don't open the preseason until next week, so in the meantime, the 49ers and raiders...are rolling on with training camp.(vicki) starting with the silver and black, mark carpenter tells us how players are settling in to jon gruden's system nearly a week into camp. when jon gruden was first hired he said he wanted to throw it back to 1998, but maybe he wanted to go back a little further. earlier this week, players said one of the

carrying 103 people crashed just after taking off from an airport in northern mexico yesterday. new video tonight shows the frightening moments just before and after the crash. (justine) silicon silicon valley is backing off the per employee tax... for now. the cupertino city council voted on tuesday to let voters decide in 20-20. the tax would have produced nearly ten million dollars a year to help relieve traffic. the tax was specifically geared toward the city's largest employer, apple, which pushed back at the tax. currently the tech company employes more that 24-thousand people. mountain view placed a similar tax on google with no objection. that will create 6-million dollars for transit and housing. (ken) wells fargo has agreed to pay a 2-billion dollar fine to settle claims it misled investors about subprime mortgage loans sold between 2005 and 2007. the
