goood evening i'm vicki liviakis.(grant) and i'm grant lodes. this is in the high end marin county town of mill valley. the daycare owner's son has been arrested on theft and drug charges.. and as kron4's philippe djegal reports - the man may have also opened up his mother to some legal problems of her own. (philippe) for the past few weeks... 27-year-old hank mulholland's mother, betsy, says her son has been living in this room in her home on meadow drive with his girlfriend... before they planned to move to seattle. it's on the opposite end of the house to the room out of which betsy has operated a daycare service for 30 years called "cozy kid care." several law enforcement agencies served a search warrant here wednesday morning...betsy/suspect's mother- "the daycare had nothing to do with my son." investigators say what appears to be the power drug fentanyl -- was found in the home, and that no one living here has a prescription for it. betsy disputes the drug was actually ever in the house... rather that

polithe drug's in hesor n's car daycare. still the city of mill valley shutdown the daycare after learning betsy does not have the proper permits to operate the business within city limits... though she says she does have a state license. besty/suspect's mother- "i've never known i needed a mill valley city license in any daycare, small. i have a small daycare. any small daycare that i know of does not have this information." police were led to mulholland after identifying him as a suspect in four thefts reported at supermarkets and drugs stores in san rafael, mill valley and other parts of the county. the thefts happened at the end of may through mid-july. san rafael police sergeant lisa holdon says he got away with more than 17-res say their is a drug addict.. police say it's unclear if he's a drug dealer.sgt. lisa holdon/srpd- "its certainly concerning that there was a daycare being operated in a location where a person possess narcotics." besty/suspect's mother- "i mean, i think this will be, you know, a good lesson for him." as for mulholland... he remains at the marin county jail... where he was booked for grand theft... and, his mother and father say they have no plans on bailing him out. in mill

(vicki) now to the latest on the massive wildfires burning in northern california tonght. in total-- the fires in mendocino, lake, shasta, trinity, and mariposa counties has burned nearly 300-thousand acres. (grant) we want to start our coverage tonight with the two fires burning in mendocino and lake counties. the mendocino complex fire is a combination complex fire is a combination of the river and ranch fires. the fires are burning near clearlake.. the ranch fire is just to the north of upper lake-- and the river fire is to the west of lakeport. here's a look at the latest numbers... are threatening several lakeside towns.the state's department of forestry and fire protection said tuesday that firefighters increased containment from 5 to 10 percent of the two fires straddling mendocino and lake counties in northern california.the wildfires have destroyed seven homes and have burned 116 square miles (300 square kilometers) of rural land.officials on monday ordered residents of two towns near clear lake to evacuate. the notice was for the towns of kelseyville and finley and brought the number of people affected by those fires to about 18,000.

(grant) in fact - the carr fire continues to climb on the list of the most destructive fires in california history.. catherine heenan is here with the latest numbers... ... this is new video of the carr fire -- an aerial view of what's described as a 'fire-nado'... the fire continues to spread into rural and wilderness areas... and is 35 percent contained.. it's now considered the sixth most destructive fire in state history.. nearly 126-thousand acres have been destroyed...along withone-thousand-60 homes....and 18 businesses. today cal fire officials said weather conditions are still unstable, with shifting winds. a fire weather watch has been issued for today through saturday.with crews are

scrambling to prevent any spread across control lines. more than 16-hundred homes are still threatened. the carr fire is 196 square miles - more than three times the size of the city of redding. a little encouraging news - most evacuations in redding have been lifted.. the wildfire began july 23rd and has killed 6 people - including two firefighters. grant and vicki? (vicki) now to the ferguson fire burning in mariposa county. it has grown by 6-thousand acres since yesterday. in total, the fire has burned more than 68-thousand acres and remains at 39-percent containment. two firefighters were killed in this fire. one building has been destroyed... but no homes have burned. the fire has also forced the closure of yosemite valley...through at least sunday. (vicki) d the state of california is pushing back. kron4's maureen kelly explains what's at stake. it's a move that critics say will cause more of this.....dirty air....and cause consumers to spend more at the pump....the trump administation says they want to freeze an obama era environmental regulation requiring car manufacturers to make vehicles more fuel efficant. they also want to revoke the state of california's right to set it's own tougher fuel mileage standards. california's attorney general has filed suit, along with 16 ther states, to stop them.the proposed rule from the federal government if adopted will make cars ssfuel efficient and allow them to ful pollution for this reckless action by the trump administration? we do at the pump and with our health. that's why in contrast to the trump administration, here in california along with the auto industry serving our state, we're making steady progress toward thing benchmarks for zero emission vehicles."the trump adminstations reasoning for

than 10-thousand neighborhoods across the nation -- and an area of san jose came in at number three. it ranked high on factors including schools, crime, unemployment rates and home price appreciation. specifically - it's the union neighborhood of san jose. the report calls its top five picks as 'great neighborhoods' whichrepresent a lot of diversity.... aside from san jose... the number one neighborhood is in naples, florida.. number two is mo-beel, alabama.. four -- charlotte, north carolina. and number 5 - denver, colorado. aside from the positive buzz -- the list is considered useful for realtors making a sales pitch to buyers. grant and vicki? (grant/landing/vo) there are so many traffic problems across the region but peninsula commuters can no doubt agree that the daily backup along university avenue in palo altois one of the worst. but as kron four's rob fladeboe reports now, a fix is in the works that should bring some relief.

nats (slow traffic on university ave)if it seems like the stop and go signals along university avenue are out of sync, impeding the flow of traffic, you are correct. it turns out those lights, from roughly middlefield avenue in palo alto all the way to the dumbarten bridge in east palo alto, are managed by three different agencies, the two cities and caltrans. in the next few months, armed with an 80,000 dollar grant from the metroplitan transportation commission, those lights are going to be synchronized says palo alto transit chief joshua mello.joshua mello/palo alto chief transportation official "....this grant will enable us to develop a coordinated signal for all three agencies and that will make for a smoother progression of traffic for the entire corridor from the dumbarten bridge to downtown palo alto..."in all, 14 different signals will be re-calibrated, including a few on donahoe street in east palo alto. it's hoped the action will also reduce bad behavior that has some impatient drivers running lights or cutting

take a look at this... a man suspected of taking up-skirt photos of women has been a- thanks to the help of an alert bystander. it all happened at a target store in southern california. st ismael duarte/ witness"what caught my attention, when he got close to my daughter it was in the camera mode."when this orange county dad noticed this man approach his 15 year old daughter in the cypress target sunday night at 7;45 with a cell phone held low pointed up in the direction of her skirt.he blocked him from

getting close to her.but minutes later as ismael duarte and his family stood in line he saw the bald man in a tank top strike again.this time bending down and apparently recording video up another woman's skirt.target security tape captured the confrontation.ismael duarte/ witness"we were coming over to the register and here he comes again -- pops out following another girl with the dress." duarte kicked the cell phone from 29 year old jorge ibarra. unfonted/duarte's wife"my husband was basically on top of the guy and asking him to give him his phone. he wouldn't."duarte and his wife ran after the man. snapping pictures of him and his license plate. that's all police needed to catch him. unfonted/duarte's wifeit's disgusting that he knew exactly what he was doing. if he went to different targets target security tape shows ibarra placing his cell phone on the ground near other women in the cypress target the same night. police say earlier that day at a target in cerritos ibarra used his cell phone to inappropriately videotape and take pictures of women there as well.the duartes say the cypress target manager told them the staff had been warned that a man with ibarra's description was targeting

(grant) in the east bay... the family of nia wilson is suing bart. wilson was killed on july 22nd at the macarthur bart station. the 18-year-old was stabbed in the neck. her sister was also hurt in the attack... which bart police say appears to be random. john cowell has been charged with murder and attempted murder. the wilson family says bart failed to keep their daughters safe. wilson's funeral is set for 11:00 tomorrow morning at the acts full gospel church in oakland. (grant) police in san ramon are asking for your help in locating a teenage girl. 14-year-old taylor cusick was last seen on monday night in san ramon.. according to a facebook post from her mother. san ramon police did confirm that she ran away from home. taylor is 5-feet 4-inches tall with dark brown hair and green eyes.

(vicki) in the south bay... 4 people are arrested after police say they were prowling in a milpitas neighborhood. somebody called police to report people shining flashlights into parked cars on washington drive. when police arrived the suspects ran away. police eventually caught up with them and arrested 4 people. two of them were minors. the other two have been identified as darius gipson and isaiah norton. they have been booked into the santa clara county jail. (vicki) a body has been found at the green waste recycling plant in san it was discovered yesterday afternoon. the recycling plant is located on the 600 block of charles street. police are investigating but are ánotá calling it a homicide at this time. (grant) in the north bay... police arrested a man they believe vandalized nine businesses in san rafael. the tagging adds up to six thousand five hundred dollars of damage to these businesses. through surveillance video... officers were able to identify 20 year old timothy

screening at more than 150 airports. you heard that right. the t-s-a is revisiting a proposal to eliminate screening at certain airports. if implemented, andrew spencer reports it could mark a major change for the industry. right now, the t-s-a screens passengers at nearly 440 airports nationwide. under the proposal, that number could drop drastically.according to internal documents obtained by c-n-n, the agency is considering ending security screenings at more than 150 small and medium-sized airports -- airports that operate commercial flights with no more than 60 passengers.t-s-a says they're simply resurrecting an idea they have explored before --

(philippe) "cozy kid care" has been shut down by the city of mill valley. this after several law enforcement agencies served a search warrant on this home wednesday. betsy says she has owned and operated the daycare service out of her home on meadow drive for 30-years. she says she's licensed by the state... but police discovered she didn't have a city permit to run the service. after investigators say they found what appears to be the powerful drug fentynal in the house... believed to belong to besty's 27-year-old son hank mulholland... who was the focus of the search warrant.betsy/suspect's mother- 'the suspected fentanyl was in his car. there's no drugs in the house. uh, he was just staying here transitionally for a few weeks before he moved to seattle." police believe mulholland is connected to at least four thefts reported in san rafael and in mill valley. the first happening on may 31st -- the last in early july. he's accused of stealing in excess of 17-thousand dollars worth of stuff.sgt. lisa holdon/srpd- "in one instance, a large quantity of nicorete gum was stolen and in another instance, um, health supplements were taken." the thefts happened at supermarkets and drug stores in mill valley, san rafael and other parts of the county. police are still looking into

( catherine ) the men say they had to be separated in order to make room for a straight couple. grant lodes has more on the situation. tesla's battery plant in nevada is suing for at leasta million dollars in defamation damages. tesla had originally accused martin tripp of hacking into computers, then stealing and leaking confidential information to the media. tripp's lawyers filed a counterclaim in federal court. it claims that any damages to the company were caused or contributed to by tesla's "own negligence, acts or omissions." tripp claims that up to $200 million worth of battery parts for tesla's model 3 vehicle were incorrectly categorized as scrap -- then shipped or were in the process of being shipped to customers.
