vacationing in hawaii has quite the story to share. while swimming off waikiki-- something but her. know, something bad, it wasn't just a little fish nibble. and so i pulled my foot in the air and saw it was bleeding all over the place."her son and two strangers helped get her out of the water... once on land...a lifeguard told her it was an eel bite...kristen porter/bite victim"it was quite painful."i stopped by the waikiki aquarium to talk to director andrew rossiter...who was surprised to hear about the bite... because eels are active at night... and prefer rocky areas...andrew rossiter/waikiki aquarium"i think the beach where she was bitten, i don't think there are any big rocky areas around there so it's very, very unusual and very mysterious." rossiter tells me there are five or six eel species in hawaii that could cause a bite like the one porter had... nikki schenfeld/reporting"and after looking at kristen's photos, the waikiki aquarium director tells me that he believes it was a moray eel that was up to five feet in length and they can be found in just five feet of water in waikiki.rossiter tells me moray eels can reach up to 10-feet and swallow their prey hole... and they can attack quickly...nat sound of q-and-a "how fast can they attack?" andrew rossiter/waikiki aquarium"like that.
