intentionally set by one of the victims. kron 4's dan kerman is live in vallejo tonight with the details. dan? sunday's early morning fire at this vallejo home led to the deaths of a mother and her two 14-year old daughters... their 11 year old sister survived... since their deaths a memorial has been growing outside the home... and talk has continued about the fire being intentionally set. now we have the gruesome details. vallejo police say it turns out the mother "mau dao... set herself on fire" ... and "dao's suicide and arson also resulted in the deaths of her two 14 year old daughters." "the vallejo police department has classified this case as a suicide that resulted in two homicides."

(grant) another big story tonight... it was an emotionally gut wrenching day inside the courtroom during the sentencing phase of the ghost-ship warehouse fire case.. max harris and derek almena's lawyers cut a deal with the alameda county district attorney and pleaded no contest to 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. kron4's maureen kelly was there as family members of some of the fire victims confronted the two defendants. she joins us live at the

oakland courthouse. maureen? (maureen)many tears were shed inside the courtroom as victim's family members and friends were able to voice the pain and anger they've been feeling since that tragic night on december 2nd 2016. more than 20 victim impact statements were read in person....in some cases lawyers or represenatives from the da's office read letters...all of them lashing out at the two defendants. heard from close to two dozen people today.because so many people died in the ghostship warehouse fire....the judge scheduled two days for the sentencing hearing.derick almena who managed the ghostship artist collective kept his eyes mostly trained on the people sharing their pain....he kept a netural expression but sometimes his eyes seemed to be brimming with tears.max harris, was a tenant who helped almena

collect rent and schedule illegal concerts there, had his back to the speakers almost entirely, usually with his eyes downcast...and his jaw clenched.while they were asked to direct their statements to the judge many ignored that order and spoke directly to almena and harris. the father of 20 year old micheala gregory who died in the arms of her boyfriend alex vega said " i truly hope that the ghosts of the ship will haunt you until the last breaths you take.he and other family members called the plea deal a slap on the wrist and said justice was not served. almena's deal includes a 9 year prison sentence of which he's expected to only serve 3 years.harris is set to get six years...and is expected to serve 23 months. they could have gotten life sentences if found guity in a full trial. several people who spoke said

they wanted a trial because they believe more information would be brought to light about the alleged culpability of the buildings owners, city of oakland, alameda county and state agencies, as well as pg&e ....all were alleged by some of those speaking out, to have known that people were illegally living in what was described as a death trap....and failed to act.i spoke to the friend of one victim outside the courtroom. we read we need some real change in this town, it's been allowed for generations to rot from the inside. now we need to take acountability. and it's hard i understand the mayors office when she says she inherits a problem that's a huge scale but that does not stop the fact that we need to address this, we have lives lost we will continue to have lives lost we step forward to care for our citizens of the city the victim impact statement wrapped up today just a little over an hour ago. we are expected to hear from both defendants when the sentencing hearing resumes friday morning.maureen kelly kron4 news (vicki) (vicki)public safety was the main topic at today's bart board of directors meeting in oakland. the transit agency's general manager presented a detailed plan aimed at keepin g look at the safety proposals approved by the board of directors

the man charged with deliberately the fire refused to leave his jail cell today, so his arraignment was moved to friday.forest clark is being held on a million dollars bail.he is facing felony arson and criminal threats charges that could put him in prison for life.before his arrest, clark claimed he was the target of an arsonist. found themselves stuck in atlanta due to bad weather. ashley thompson tells us, the parents are so upset, they hired a lawyer. nine-year-old carter gray and his seven-year-old sister etta have been on dozens of flights but their first flight without their parents was a nightmare. attorney alan armstrong - i mean this is a failure on so many levels. on july 22nd - around 8pm the two were put on a frontier flight from des moines, iowa to orlando florida.severe weather diverted the flight to atlanta. i spoke with their father, chad gray, by phone. sot: we did not hear from a frontier airlines employee throughout this whole process and the only way we recevied any notification was from another unaccompanied minor who had a cell phone and he let my son call me. gray says gate agents with frontier

(vicki) happening now in the east bay... u-c berkeley police are asking for help in identifying two sexual assault suspects... in two separate cases. the first incident happened at the recreational sports facility on august first a man was taking a shower at around 9:30 in the morning when police say another man reached through the shower curtain and grabbed him. the second incident happened near the campanile area on campus-- when police say a woman was sexually assaulted by a man she met on an online dating website. police have limited descriptions of the suspects in both cases. ... (grant) police in santa rosa arrest a man accused of spying on women using the restroom at santa rosa junior college. a woman called police when she noticed a man watching her from another stall. the woman gave police a description of the man. police later found ian mumbi sitting in a parked car nearby. he was identified as the man in the women's bathroom. he has been booked into the sonoma county jail. (vicki) along the peninsula... foster city police are investigating the death of a man found near the san mateo bridge today. police were first called at around nine thirty this morning when someone reported seeing a body in the bay. using boats police pulled the body out of the water and pronouced him dead once they got to shore. police are currently working with san mateo county coroner's officer to identify the man and find out how he died. (grant) the father (grant) the father of the man accused of training kids to be school shooters is speaking out for the first time. authorities say his son is an an islamic extremist...with a compound in new mexico... where 11 children ranging in age from one to 15 were being abused. scott mclean reports. when sheriff's deputies raided this remote compound in northern new mexico, they found 11 children forced to live in squalor... it's hard to imagine a more appalling scene... but prosecutors say it gets worse. according to the criminal complaints for child abuse filed against 5 adults on the compound, a subsequent foster parent says the adults "had trained the child in the use of an assault rifle in preparation for future school shootings."the accusation has not been proven in court. in a statement to cnn, the suspect's attorney questioned the basis of the allegation.an ar15 and six other guns were found on the compound that had its own makeshift shooting range.the local sheriff considered the occupants armed islamic extremists - but offered no proof. one of them, siraj

this is the 11th year the 3- day music festival is being held at golden gate park. headliners this year include janet jackson, florence and the machine, and the weekend. the festival also features food from local restaurants, wine and beer too. (vicki) and a reminder if you are heading to the festival this weekend... outside lands is enforcing a new "clear bag" policy... that includes backpacks and totes. but small clutches and fanny packs do ánot have to be see-thru. outside lands organizers say many festivals have adopted the clear bag policy because it reduces time for security checks and enhances safety. (grant) thousands of people have signed an online petition that proposes replacing secretary of education betsy devos with nba star lebron james. the autor of the petition argues lebron james is a better choice because he has shown he cares about america's youth and public education. james recently opened a school for at-risk children in his hometown of akron ohio. the 'i promise' school is a

year-round learning center devoted to the city's most challenged youngsters. at last check...the petition had around 17,000 signatures. (grant) apple is trying to quell privacy concerns -- and it assures users that i-phones are not listening to or recording conversations around them. in a letter to federal lawmakers, apple insisted iphones do not listen to what users are saying throughout the day. apple's director of federal government affairs says the device only listens when it is triggered by the words "hey siri." the tech giant also says there's a visual indicator letting users know when siri is listening to a request. apple issued the statement in response to an inquiry from the energy and commerce committee. (vicki)he d-m-v is taking even more steps to help shorten wait times at offices all across the state. state lawmakers approved a funding request from the department of finance. that money will be used to hire 230 new employees at d-m-v offices all across the state. the director of the d-m-v says the
