(lydia)in the east bay... police are investigating a shooting this morning that left one dead. it happened last night in the castro valley. kron 4's ali reid has the details. the coroner is on scene ...so far it's still an active investigation, so the crime scene is being preserved.pkg this vehicle is at a standstill in the middle of john court. it appears to be the center of the investigation.authorities have not identified the victim, but through word of mouth, family members believe it is one of their own. if it is the person they believe it is, im told he

was at his god mothers home, on john court .... the same block this shooting happened. neighbors say there was a group of young men when gunshots rang out. the sheriffs office did detain at least 2 of the men that witnesses say were with the victim .... for questioning.a possible family member tells me they're trying to be patient in finding out if it is their loved one, but the sheriffs office says the coroner has to i-d the victim. right now it's a waiting game. the incident happened around 5:30 thursday evening .... by nightfall the entire neighborhood seems to know who was gunned down ...but again, no confirmation from authorities so far. (lydia)happening today... we will hear from both defendants in the ghost ship warehouse fire sentencing. yesterday, family members of some of the 36 people who lost there lives in the 20-16 fire expressed their anger. many asked the judge to toss out the deal for the two men who pleaded no contest to 36- counts of involuntary manslaughter. the master tenant.. derek almena... cut a deal giving him a nine- year prison sentence. the warehouse tenant.. max harris.. is expected to get six- years.. although both

(lydia)stunning developments in a deadly house fire in vallejo ... that killed a mother and her two daughters. kron 4 has learned that the mother lit herself on fire... and now the community is in shock. kron 4's hermela aregawi has the story. mourning a loss..those who knew mau dao and her twin daughters.. say they're in shock. i just could remember the twins, they're very goofy. each time i see them they have new antics.and their mom, their mom mau is very kind and

i know there may be some questions of what had happened here at the house and why. but as far as i know for all the years, that i've known mau and the kids they've been happy. but somewhere.. something went terribly wrong.vallejo police say... early sunday morning.. the 47 year old mother committed suicide by setting herself on fire..that fire also killed her 14 year old daughters.friends of the family we talked to say.. as far as they knew.. dao was kind..a nd happy. she's a genuine friendly person you know. and she took my kids everywhere their kids went and when this happened, it was very unbelievable.i just don't want people to think after hearing a lot fo the results that happened at the end. there's a reason why it happened. unfortunately it happened the way it did. but mau was a very loving mom. and a very loving wife. and would do anything for herself and her kids and her family at any given time, as well as other people's family, like my kids. dao's third daughter.. an 11 year old suffered some injuries but is expected to make a full recovery.their father was out of the country

at the time of the fire. (lydia) that was kron 4's hermela aregawi reporting. investigators say.. they have been working on the case nonstop since sunday.. after they deemed the fire suspicious. before they said it was a homicide investigation... but as of yesterday, authorities released a statement saying the physical and electronic evidence... traced the fire back to mau dao. (lydia)in berkeley... police are searcing for the people

who caused thousands of dollars worth of damage... during a protest this past weekend. it happened sunday afternoon during the "no to marxism" protest... when a group of people dressed in black and wearing masks... damaged 21 cars in a parking lot. those vandals smashed out windows... and set the inside of an suv on fire. berkeley fire fighters quickly put out the flames. most of the damaged cars are now repaired. people who live in the area say these attacks on personal property... are unnecessary and senseless. (lydia) police also say those people tried smashing windows to a marine corps recruiting center... and damaged 2 a-t-m machines. if you know who may be responsible for any of this damage, you're aked to call police. (lydia) police in petaluma are asking for the publics

help in identifying two suspects who vandalized a business. it happened around 11-15 tuesday night... on f street near second street. the two suspects were caught on video vandalizing fencing around a business. the owner says the business has been repeatedly vandalized with graffiti. petaluma police are working to identify the two suspects. (lydia)people in the orange county are are being urged to evacuate from the path of the holy fire. here are the latest numbers... over 21- thousand people have been evacuated. it has now burned more than 10-thousand acres in the cleveland national forest in orange, and riverside counties. and right now it is only five percent contained. investigators have arrested the man responsible for the fire, and have charged him with arson. (lydia) and in shasta and trinity counties. the carr fire has burned more than 178- thousand acres. it is 49 percent contained. more than 1-thousand homes have been destroyed. 500 are still threatened. seven people have been killed by this fire... including two

firefighters. (lydia)the largest fire in state history is now more than half contained. the mendocino complex - which is made up of the ranch and river fires - has now burned more than 305 -thousand acres. the ranch fire has burned more than 256- thousand acres and is 49- percent contained. the river fire has scorched nearly 49- thousand acres, and is 87 - percent contained. crews say, it will still take several weeks to contain the twin fires because they are burning in steep terrain ... which is difficult to reach. (lydia)in the south bay... the builder of a luxury high rise condominium project is under fire from labor unions. the builder is accused of with-holding the wages of some workers who were allegedly held captive in a storage container. kron four's rob fladeboe has the details. nats (construction workers rally)hundreds of construction workers rallied outside the silvery towers condominium project thursday here in downtown san jose. their union has accused the builder of wage theft and human trafficking.david bini/building and construction trades council "....we know workers were being exploited on the job, but we were shocked to hear of the blatant human trafficking occurring here, it is shocking and disgusting..."the builder of the project, full power properties, has been ordered to pay $250,000 dollars to to 22 immigrant workers who were

(lydia) in national news... there's a new setback in the trump administration's immigration policy. a federal judge ruled the trump administration can not deport immigrants while they're fighting to stay in the u-s. it's part of a case brought by the american civil liberties union -- challenging new restrictions to immigration policy brought on by attorney general jeff sessions. the federal judge issued an emergency order halting the deportations.... and threatened to hold attorney general jeff sessions in contempt, if his orders aren't followed. (lydia)texas child welfare officials have opened an abuse and neglect investigation into a dentention center. this follows reports that a child died shortly after leaving a u-s facility. the announcement thursday came hours after texas officials appeared frustrated during a public hearing, saying immigration attorneys who made the allegations last week....

still hadn't provided the child's name... and family and protective services could not start the investigation without a name. officials have completed about 40 abuse and neglect investigations at child detention facilities. none were found to be substantiated. (lydia)the father of a man charged with abusing children... and accused of training at least one of them to commit school shootings is speaking out. imam siraj wahhaj's son is also accused of abducting his own son more than eight months ago in georgia. he was one of five adults arrested last week at a new mexico compound after authorities rescued 11 starving children. they later found the remains of a young boy... but the body not been identified. wahhaj says his son's actions are completely out of character.

of the 11 rescued children says that a child was trained to use an assault rifle in preparation for future school shootings. it was that foster parent who alerted investigators. police say they found several firearms and ammo at the compound. (lydia)a new study suggests that inducing labor 39 weeks into a pregnancy may be good for mother and baby. the study, published in the new england journal of medicine, says women who had elective induced labor at 39 weeks, had a lower likelihood of certain complications. induced labor also did not result in a greater chance of problems for the baby. the study also revealed that waiting longer to give birth could raise the mother's likelihood of needing a c-section to give birth. those findings would reverse the long-held belief that induction increases the chance of a c-section. (lydia) public safety (lydia) (lydia)public safety was the main topic at a bart board of directors meeting in oakland yesterday. the transit agency's general manager presented a detailed plan... aimed at keeping passengers safe and secure. kron4's haaziq madyun takes a look at the safety proposals that bart's board just approved.

moving forward with two safety items, updating all analog surveillance cameras to digital and installing three 9-1-1 call boxes on each platform. the remaining proposals were tabled for a future board meeting that will be held at night in a suburban town along the bart line...haaziq madyun kron4news (lydia)in the east bay... u-c berkeley police are asking for help in identifying two sexual assault suspects... in two separate cases. the first incident happened at the recreational sports facility on august first. a man was taking a shower at around 9-30 in the morning... when police say another man reached through the shower curtain and grabbed him. the second incident happened near the campanile area on campus -- when police say a woman was sexually assaulted by a man she met on an online dating

website. police have limited descriptions of the suspects in both cases. (lydia)also in the east bay... the alameda county sheriff's office has put out a one-million dollar warrant for a wanted man. alexandar rhodes is wanted in connection with the sexual abuse of a small child. a felony warrant is out for the 30- year old's arrest. detectives are actively looking for him in the east bay. if you see him you are asked to call police at 9-1-1. (lydia)along the peninsula... foster city police are investigating the death of a man found near the san mateo bridge. police were called yesterday morning around nine thirty when someone reported seeing a body in the bay. using boats... police pulled the body out of the water and pronouced him dead once they got to shore. police are currently working with san mateo county coroner's officer to identify the man and find out how he died. (lydia)four men are in jail this morning for charges related to selling and possesing heroin. santa rosa police arrested them wednesday at two different vallejo homes after finding

more than 5 pounds of heroin. most of the drugs and all cash you see here were found inside a wall behind a kitchen cabinet at one of the homes. detectives discovered evidence of packaging, scales, and other items related to drug trafficking. police also found an 11 year old girl at one of the homes. she has been placed with family members. (lydia)police in palo alto have arrested the man who shot into a car parked in a safeway parking lot. 37-year-old christian pope of nevada was arrested wednesday night. police also recovered a handgun inside pope's truck... which police believe was the weapon used in the shooting. they say the shooting happened after an argument in the parking lot. pope is being held at the santa clara county jail. (lydia)in the north bay... a u-p-s truck rolled over on west highway- 780 causing both lanes to be shutdown for 20 minutes. benicia fire department tweeted out this picture saying, the truck rolled over just before east 5th street. a viewer sent us another picture saying,

you hope i'm here for what? i was hoping, you were here for the ahhwait hold that thought! there is a hiking trail in the city of belmont named water dog lake and while it is dog friendly, and ere is a lake it's not a dog lake ok ignore the dogs in the lake wait i'm getting ahead of myself let's go back to the beginning ambiance as you enter the park you are greeting with a barrage of signs most are park rules, information on trail etiquette oh and this rattlesnake sign but one rule ok make that two rules are what we're going to focus on rule number 1, all dogs must be on a leash, but based on what i found, that rules is pretty much ignored! ambiance and rule number two, to clean up after your dog, after all it's required by law yet i found doggie land mine all over the place oh and you were saying people who leave dog poop in the middle of the trail, man they're not even sneaking about it, they leave

(lydia)happening today... thousands of people will be coming to san francisco for the annual outside lands music festival. this is the 11th year the 3-day music festival is being held at golden gate park. there are several headliners. on saturday its florence and the machine... and on sunday it's janet jackson. they each start around eight p-m... but there's music all day. the festival also features food from local restaurants, wine and beer too. and expect a lot of traffic from all over tonight-- there's also a giants game in the city.... and a raiders pre-season game at the coliseum. children at the most vulnerable to any kind of toxic exposures because their bodies are growing and their brains are still developing they are much much more to toxic exposure laura deehan is with the the non- profit california public interest research tells kron 4 news... the non-profit sent 27 common back to school supplies to an independent lab for chemical tests. the worst offender.... this green crayon made by playskool and purchased at a dollar tree store.sot the crayons that we found included asbestossot def want to avoid that capirg also found the blue plastic in this binder from dollar tree contained phthalates - which is linked to lower iq scores and obesity. but a test on this glue, turned out to be just fine. another alarm from the research... these dry- erase markers from amazon that tested positive for benzene - a known carcinogen. even though the label said non-toxic.sot so clearly those labels don't mean anything we

sentencing hearing for derick almena and max harris. family members of some of the 36 people killed in the 2016 fire expressed their anger yesterday. many asked the judge to toss out the deal almena and harris made with prosecutors. the two have pleaded "no contest" to 36- counts of involuntary manslaughter. ( lydia ) almena -- who was the master tenant -- cut a deal that would send him to prison for 9-years. harris cut one that would send him away for 6-years. both are expected to serve just half of their sentences. police in san franciso have arrested a man they believe tried to kill another man in a shooting back in june. 22-year-old shadahia mitchell was arrested in connection with the june 15 shooting in the 13-hundred block of steiner street. following the shooting... officers found the victim and transported him to the hospital where he was treated and released. on august first... officers spotted mitchell and arrested him on suspicion of attempted murder. mitchell is being held without bail. ( lydia ) public safety was the main topic at the bart board of directors meeting in oakland. the transit agency's general manager presented a detailed plan... aimed at keeping passengers safe and secure. some actions that were implimented

inlcuded emergency staffing... deploying bart station teams that will wear brightly colored vests...and security training. they will also deploy staff to watch for fare evaders to enter the transit system and they added a second proof of payment team for the evening commute. the board did approve moving forward with two safety and security actions items.. one of which would include installing three 9-1-1 call boxes on each platform. ( lydia ) the directors also approved a motion to hold a rare evening board meeting in a suburban town along the bart line to give those bart customers an opportunity to voice their opinons about safety and security. ( james ) happening now in the east bay... u-c berkeley police are asking for help in identifying two men wanted for sexual assault... in two separate cases. the first incident happened at the recreational sports facility on august first.

a man was taking a shower at around 9:30 in the morning when police say another man reached through the shower curtain and grabbed him. the second incident happened near the campanile area on campus-- when police say a woman was sexually assaulted by a man she met on an online dating website. police have limited descriptions of the suspects in both cases. ( james ) in the north bay... the mother and son who ran a massive prostitution ring in the bay area have pleaded "no contest" to the charges against them. david romesburg and his mother, fay, ran the ring in rohnert park for more than 10- years. during that time -- police say they employed about 150 women. at least one woman says she was underage when they recruited her. another says she was sexually assaulted during her interview. david romesburg faces up to 16 years in state prison when he is sentenced in october. ( james ) along the peninsula... foster city police are investigating the death of a man found near the san mateo bridge. police were first called at around 9:30 yesterday morning.... when someone reported seeing a body in the bay. using

boats police pulled the body out of the water. police are working with san mateo county coroner's officer to identify the man and find out how he died. (lydia) in berkeley... police are looking for the people who caused thousands of dollars worth of damage... during a protest. it happened sunday afternoon during the "no to marxism" protest... when a group of people dressed in black and wearing masks... damaged 21 cars in a parking lot. those vandals smashed out windows... and set the inside of an s-u-v on fire. berkeley firefighters quickly put out the flames. most of the damaged cars are now repaired. police also say those people tried smashing windows to a marine corps recruiting center... and damaged 2 a-t-m machines. ( lydia ) public safety was the main topic at the bart board of directors meeting in oakland. the transit agency's general manager presented a detailed plan... aimed at keeping passengers safe and secure. some actions that were implimented inlcuded emergency staffing... deploying bart station teams that will wear brightly colored vests...and security training. they will also deploy staff to watch for fare evaders to enter the transit system and they added a second proof of payment team for the evening commute. the board did approve moving forward with two safety and security

( lydia ) new this morning... police in san franciso have arrested a man they believe tried to kill another man in a shooting back in june. 22-year-old shadahia mitchell was arrested in connection with the june 15 shooting in the 13-hundred block of steiner street. following the shooting... officers found the victim and transported him to the hospital where he was treated and released. on august first... officers spotted mitchell and arrested him on suspicion of attempted murder. mitchell is being held without bail. the east bay... u-c berkeley police are asking for help in identifying two men wanted for sexual assault... in two separate cases. the first incident happened at the recreational sports facility on august first. a man was taking a shower at around 9:30 in the morning when police say another man reached through the shower curtain and grabbed him. the second incident happened near the campanile area on campus-- when police say a woman was sexually assaulted by a man she met on an online dating website. police have limited descriptions of the suspects in both cases. ( james ) in the north bay... the mother and son who ran a massive prostitution ring in the bay area have pleaded "no contest" to the charges against them. david romesburg and his mother, fay, ran the ring in rohnert park for more than 10- years. during that time -- police say they employed about 150 women. at least one woman says she was underage when they recruited her. another says she was sexually assaulted during her interview. david romesburg faces up to 16 years

(lydia) in the east bay ... berkeley police are looking for the people who caused thousands of dollars worth of damage... during a protest. it happened sunday afternoon during the "no to marxism" protest... when a group of people dressed in black and wearing masks... damaged 21 cars in a parking lot. those vandals smashed out windows... and set the inside of an s-u-v on fire. berkeley firefighters quickly put out the flames. most of the damaged cars are now

( james ) the number of californians who can afford to buy a home is dropping. and in the bay area... only 1 in 5 people can afford a home. a study by the california's association of realtors says the state showing home affordability rates down to a ten year low. experts say the reason is high home prices and rising interest rates. the other problem is not enough housing. realtor glen bell with better homes and garden says it may take decades before there are enough houses in the
