(vicki) from family members of victims. as kron4's haaziq madyun tells us - the case will now head to trial. i thought i needed more time but i don't. that is what the judge said right before he rejected the plea deal of derick almena and max harris, the two defendants in the deadly ghost ship warehouse court case here at the alameda county superior court house in oakland.it was a real cliff hanger in the court room prior to judge james cramer announcing his decision. he said that the law does not allow him to change a plea deal but then he told the court that he does not have to accept it. both max harris and derick almena read statements to the victims in court. harris telling the victims families "i am so deeply sorry and regret my actions and

a jury has awarded nearly 300-million dollars to a former school groundskeeper who claimed monsanto's popular roundup weed killer contributed to his terminal cancer.(grant) kron 4's maureen kelly is live in san francisco tonight with the details. maureen? the jury's decision is a major to award nearly $300 million a major victory for the plaintiff... and possibly for hundreds of other people with similar claims that the weed killer roundup gave them cancer. the former groundskeeper for the benecia unified school district was the first lawsuit to make it to court. that's because his cancer is terminal. inside the court room there was an audible gasp from the galley as the jury announced the punitive damages.natsvodwayne lee johnson was also awarded $39 million in compensatory damages. totaling $289 million. outside the courtroom one of the lawyers on the case said they are glad the jury is holding monsanto accountable. he said some of that money will go towards johnson's treatment. the married father of two was diagnosed with non-hodgkin's lymph oma and has lesions covering 80% of his body.bitethat attorney

(grant) we've been covering the plague of long lings at d-m-v offices across the bay area -- and the state. tonight we are learning about a special d-m-v office... that provides services only for current and retired lawmakers. and regular people...the ones who stand in the long lines...are not happy about it. mike luery reports. in california, long lines are a fact of life at department of motor vehicles offices across the state, but for legislative staffers, there's an alternative.a dmv office that is not open to the public. the office, inside room 121, has no markings on the door and was locked when we visited it on thursday, but after knocking, a worker confirmed it was a dmv office and said it's set up to handle customer complaints that escalate to the legislative branch. however, having a private office for legislators and their capitol staff is a source of frustration for

assemblyman jim patterson, r- fresno. his request for an official dmv audit was denied when three democrats -- senators ricardo lara, of los angeles; ben allen, of santa monica; and jim beall, of san jose -- abstained from voting. "i've been here six years and i'm not surprised that legislators have given themselves special privileges and perks that typical californians just don't get," patterson saidwhen asked how constituents might feel about a special office for lawmakers, lara wasn't too sure about the office's purpose."well, i think it's open to the public, if i recall," lara said. on john court in castro valley. this is in an unincorporated area of alameda county near the junction of 580 and interstate 238.you can see in the video the investigation centered around a grey honda. as alameda county sheriff's deputies investigated the scene, the entire neighborhood started to piece together who was gunned down as they knew the victim.but this morning we're working to confirm the identity of the victim. neighbors say there was a group of young men on john court when gunshots rang out. the sheriffs office did detain at least 2 of the men for questioning that witnesses say were with the victim at the time of the shooting. at this hour there is no description of the killer or involved. reporting live from alameda county... sara stinson ... kron 4 news. (vicki) (vicki) (vicki) today-- kids in need were given free backpacks just in time for the new school year. sacred heart community service in san jose held it's 16th annual "pack a back" program. the programs helps low-income families get their student's geared up for school. students have to register for an appointment at the facility about a month in advanced. sacred heart officials say that parents are expected to supply their students with more and more gear each year.

a routine traffic stop today. they were struck by a pickup truck traveling along insterstate 80 in fairfield. kron4's charles clifford is live from the hospital in fairfield... where the driver of the truck is said to be cooperating with the investigation. around 9 this morning. officer griess was on a traffic stop behind saturn sedan on the right hand shoulder of westbound 80 near campos parkway.when, for as yet unknown reasons, a white chevry truck veered to the right and struck the officer, his motorcycle and the sedan officer griess was transported to the hospital but he did not survive. the 49 year-old driver of the sedan, jaime bueza manuel, was also killeed. the driver of the white truck survived.officer kirk griess was a 19 year veteran of the highway patrol, he was a former us marine, a family man with a wife, two daughters and a son. he was also very involved with community. the highway patrol held a press confernence this afternoon at the hospital.

sacramento are dissussing a controversial topic this week: who is responsible for covering the cost of damages caused by wildfires. governor brown has said he supports ásoftening the standard that makes utility companies financially liable for fire damage. and as ben deci reports, p-g- and- e is also lobbying hard for a change to california law. if a pg&e power line tangles with a tree and there's a wildfire... who should pay for the damages? lynsey paulo/pg&e: "even if the utility has followed all of the state's high standards, the utility is still held strictly liable here in california. we think that is a flawed law that needs to be reformed."the law is called inverse condemnation... and at hearings in the state capitol, lawmakers are weighing whether it's fair.but let's set aside fair for a moment and talk about how much all this costs you.thomas long/utility reform network: "we rate payers are paying 100ús of millions of dollars every year for pg&e to do the work they are supposed to- trim trees and otherwise prevent wildfires. they need to do a better job. it's just that simple."complicating the issue is the question of home-owners insurance. if the buck no longer stops with utilities, insurance companies may be out more money to,

"the law allows for first amendment assemblies of any kind. the law does not allow for injuries to persons or "law enforfement in washington has vast experience managing security during demonstrations. their plan to prevent violence on sunday is to construct buffer zones -- keeping the two groups apart and allowing police to move through the park quickly." police also instituted a temporary policy making it illegal to carry guns in and around the demonstration area. law enforcement worked for months coordinating plans between multiple agencies and officials are confident they have a plan to keep the peace. alabama senator doug jones sahopes that is what happens.
