tonight.. we're learning an arrest has been made in a crash that left a chp officer and another driver dead. hello i'm vicki liviakis. (grant) and i'm grant lodes. the crash happened during a traffic stop on interstate 80 in fairfield on friday officer kirk greiss had pulled over a vehicle... when a pickup truck crashed into the officer and the driver he had stopped. both were killed... within the last hour police announced the pickup driver has been arrested and charged. they had previously said that person was "cooperating with the investigation". more information is expected to be released about the suspect in a news conference coming up in about 30 minutes. we'll bring you an update as soon as it gets underway. (vicki) also tonight.. the body of a fallen firefighter -- killed while battling the mendocino complex fire -- is being returned

home to utah. today there was a procession for 42-year-old matthew burchett as his body was moved from ukiah to the airport in santa rosa. he served as a firefighter for 20 years in salt lake city. but joined a smaller department back in may... to lead its wildfire program. he leaves behind a wife and young child. (grant) now to our other top story tonight a 5.. this likely comes as no surprise... but a new poll finds that a majority of bart passengers would like to see more police officers on station platforms and on trains.(vicki) kron4's haaziq madyun has more details about the results of the poll.... and he also did a little polling of his own (pkg)support more police patrols on bart stations and trains to increase passenger safety in the wake of recent violent attacks. that is the twitter poll question the bay area council organization asked bart passengers who live in the counties of san francisco, san mateo, alameda and contra

seems to be an everyday occurance.sotadd to that the potholes... it seems as if road crews can barely keep up... now a new study by the trip research group finds bad roads coupled with congestion are costing california drivers 61 billion dollars annuallysot in the san francisco oakland area the costs break down to $2,992 per driver annually, while in the san jose area it costs drivers an extra $2,745 sot carl guardino/ california transportation commission 38-48 carl guardino is a member of the california transportation commission. he says that changed last year when the state legislature passed a 12 cent a gallon hike in the gas tax generating nearly 5-and a half billion dollars a year. sotbut now a measure to repeal that gas tax is on the november ballot... guardino thinks it's shortsighted and many drivers agree.sot

tonight... harmful levels of a week killer linked to cancer are showing up in foods and cereals marketed to children. the non-profit "environmental working group" found trace amounts of glyphosate in several produces including cheerios and quaker oats granola bars. glyphosphate is the active ingredient in monsanto's roundup weed killer. scientists tested 29 products... and found most of them contained higher levels of the chemical than deemed safe. last friday, vallejo school district groundskeeper dewayne johnson

that's how three women in sacramento describe their recent ride with an uber driver. sara zendehnam reports. theadora fuerstenberg/uber passenger"i legitimately believed we were going to die." a nightmare uber ride in sacramento...theadora fuerstenberg/uber passenger"he terrorized us for 25 minutes." it's an app thousands use everyday... but a june 15th uber trip on i-80 from a book club in arden to oak park traumatized these three women...theadora fuerstenberg/uber passenger"he would swerve in and out and then as he was doing this he would say we're all going to die now."theadora fuerstenberg.. angela o'neal and katherine vallaire say the uber driver drove

erratically... and didn't follow directions home. theadora fuerstenber passenger"we had passed our exit by this point."o'neal in the back seat that was able to get through to 911 dispatchers. that's when the women say he finally got off highway 99 at 47th avenue.theadora fuerstenberg/uber passenger "like, the doors are open oh my god so we just ran out." they were met by sacramento county sheriff's deputies...in a statement uber tells us they removed the drivers access to the app quote... a quick update on the wildfires burning across the state tonight. the massive mendocino complex fire burning in colusa, lake, and mendocino counties is 64- percent contained tonight. so far it has burned more than 360-thousand acres-- making it the largest wildfire in state history. the carr fire in shasta and trinity counties is 67-and trinity counties is 67-percent contained... and has burned more than 211-thousand acres...more than one thousand homes destoryed there. the ferguson fire that forced yosemite valley to shut down for weeks-- is 87-percent contained tonight. it has burned more than 96-thousand

acres... and yosemite was reopened yesterday. and further south in orange county... the holy fire is 72- percent contained after burning nearly 23-thousand acres. (grant) and more than 2000 national guard from a number of western states are deployedfighting those wildfires. (vicki) it's early in the fire season, but the guard says it's already been one of the busiest seasons in recent memory. out washington, d.c. correspondent brie jackson reports on the nation's military on the fire lines. the deadly wildfires raging through california present dangers for residents, firefighters, and the 2000 national guard deployed to the fire line...it's like being in a combat zone. we are just not getting shot at. sergeant julian ross says combating smokey conditions and high winds is a challenge for the guard on the ground and in the air... the guard is using innovative technology like the mq-9 reaper drone. the remotely piloted aircraft is able to fly over the wildfires... and give those

fighting the flames a birds' eye view.basically be able to record video that imagery analyst are able to relay back to the incident commanders. make real time decisions to safe lives, mitigate human suffering and save property earlier this year, congress approved nearly two billion dollars for fire prevention and suppression efforts. but with this fire season off to an active startofficials worry it may not be enough. federal leaders estimate firefighting cost could reach 3 billion dollars this year. interior secretary ryan zinke says he's committed to finding the money...and believes beyond firefighting...we need to improve forest management. so we have to work together to make sure that we restore the health of forests. this is not the new norm. it doesn't have to be.officials say the fire season is far from over. guardsmen say they'll continue to be ready to join the fight... in washington, brie jackson (vicki) (vicki) also tonight at 5:30... kron4 is always tracking local stories. here's a look at what's going on in your neighborhood right now. the east bay tonight... where police are asking for help looking for a man who assaulted a customer at a gas station in concord. it happened at the shell station on oak grove road back on july 31st... but police just released these surveillance images. officers were called to the gas station when they say the man and another customer got into a verbal fight. it then escalated and the suspect pushed the victim to the ground... injuring him. the suspect then left the area in a white van. police are asking you to please call them if you have any information. .. (vicki) in the south bay tonight... santa clara county officials will be fogging for mosquitoes after they detected west nile virus in portions of santa clara and sunnyvale. the fogging is scheduled to begin at 11-pm. this is a map officials put out of the area impacted. the fogging should take a few hours. notices of the treatment were placed in neighborhoods where it will be happening. (grant) more help is on the way for fire victims in

the north bay. the department of housing and urban development has approved more than 200 million dollars for wildfire recovery. nearly half of that money will go to sonoma county and the city of napa. the other half of the money will be divided between five other areas including parts of lake and mendocino counties. the money is meant to help with long term recovery from 2017's deadly wildfires which destroyed thousands of homes. the department of homeland security's inspector general will review a t-s-a program called "quiet skies." the recently-revealed program uses federal air marshals to track u-s citizens flagged as possibly posing a threat. the passengers are not suspected of a crime, not

under investigation, and not on any terror watch list. investigators will look into whether the program follows privacy laws... and whether it is effective. (vicki) still ahead... a local girl faces an uphill battle ... to use medical marijuana at school. we'll share her story after the break.

(grant) a judge's temporary order is currently allowing a five- year old north bay girl, with a rare form of epilepsy, to go to school with her medical marijuana. the young girl is given cannabis oil if she has a seizure. (vicki) the school district had said she couldn't attend school with that oil because of federal law. now, as kron 4's j.r. stone explains.. the family is fighting back and another decision from the judge is expected in the next two- months. brooke adams is five years unlike other kids brooke has dravet syndrome...a rare form of epilepsy that causes seizures. for brooke...the number one thing that helps stop those seizures is t-h-c oil.sot she needs the thc it

actually calms her brain and stops the seizure.kindergarten started monday for brooke but she's only able to go to her school, village elementary in santa rosa, because of a judge's temporary order allowing her to do so. see the district origionally said that because of federal drug laws she wouldn't be allowed to bring thc oil to school...which would stop her seizure. her mom jana is hopeful the judges order is a step in the right direction. sot happy of course and hope they will see....brooke is given medical marijuana oils that include thc, cbd, and thca twice a day at home. if she gets a seizure at school her personal nurse would place this oil behind her lip. without that oil her seizures could last up to three hours long.sot now with the cannabis on board her seizures last three to four minutes and we're not having to call 911 no ambulance trips no hospital stays, it's life changing.the judge who ruled on this is expected to give a more permanent ruling on this case within the next two months but jana says they'll be ready to appeal if it doesn't go in their favor. she says she never expected to be fighting

for medical marijuanasot we go to church we're mormon and don't even drink alcohol.but says the medical marijuana is doing what all other medicines haven't been able to do...help her daughter. in santa rosa, j.r. stone kron 4 news. (grant) breaking news tonight... an arrest has been made in a crash that left a chp officer and another driver dead. the crash happened during a traffic stop on interstate 80 in fairfield on friday. chp just held a news conference at 5:30.... the suspect is 36-year-old sean walker from rocklin california. the d-a spoke about the charges.

officer kirk greiss was killed during a traffic stop... when a pickup truck crashed into the officer and the driver he had stopped. both he and the driver he pulled over were killed. police had previously said the suspect was "cooperating with the investigation". (catherine) new at 6.

the san francisco police commission is set to give an update tonight on what's known simply as "building 606"-- at the old hunters point shipyard. that building has housed specialized police units for decades... and is in a superfund waste site. tonight police chief bill scott will give a status update on the concerns about safety for those stationed there. . that's after reports of officers getting sick. he'll also talk about the ongoing allegations that navy contractor 'tetra tech' botched or falsified clean-up efforts. bad roads and increased congestion have become a way of life in california, especially in the bay area. but a new study finds it's costing drivers thousands of dollars each year. kron 4's dan kerman is live in san francisco with more. dan? you might call it bay area bad
