our big story our big story this morning ... s-f-p-d arrested twelve men in connection with a string of car burglaries.kron 4's sara stinson is live from japantown in san francisco, where most of the burglaries happened.what can you tell us sara? reporter:marty - this is a huge win for s-f-p-d and for anyone who lives in the city. most of the break-ins these 12 men were involved in happened on geary street...whenever i'm walking my dog in this area you can always see broken glass littered along the curbs. take a look at the mug shots of each of the 12 men - they range in age from 18 to 39 years old. police say they are all in connection to eight cases of auto burglaries in the japantown area which happened between july 26th and last wednesday.hese men were booked on a variety of charges inccluding burglary, possession of stolen property, probation violations,

resisting arrest. police have been concentrating a lot of effort on catching car break in thiefs. and as of the end of june - auto burglaries were down 20 percent - after this that number is sure to go up. the city has been cracking down on this after alarming data showed in the last seven years there have been 81- thousand car break-ins of which only 13 arrests were made.that goes to show you how much of a win this this string of arrests is for police. s-f-p-d posted about it on its facecbook page - and people are saying they are overall impressed and relieved to hear this news.live in san francisco, sara stinson, kron 4 news

( marty )in the east bay, firefighters are mopping up a 30-acre grass fire in martinez. it happened last night just before 8-o'clock. flames charred a hillside near the freeway... and shut down highway 4 for a time. the fire threatened homes and structures at one point. firefighters used water tankers, and helicopters to fight the blaze. contra costa fire marshal, robert marshall, says a car sparked this fire. ( marty )san jose police want to talk to anyone who has information about a fatal domestic violence incident. a woman died wednesday in the hospital, one week after police say she waattacked by her husband. 48 year old cam le was arrested last week for attacking tiffany phan at their home in san jose. police found phan suffering from major head trauma from an apparent assault. police have booked her husband on murder charges. san jose police are treating the death as a domestic-violence homicide. almena's attorney: "jury trial, maybe in another county, next year. that's the bottom line">those are the options now on the table in the people versus derick almena and max harris at the alameda superior court house in oakland. the two defendants are allegedly responsible for the lives of 36-people who died in a fire while attending an music event at the ghost ship back in 2016. last week judge james kramer rejected the packaged plea deal for the two men negotiated by the d.a.'s office and the defense attorneys. almena's legal counsel tony serra explains why he is aiming to take adavantage of the opportunity to defend his client in front of a jurysotdue to the complicated

following ... the family of nia wilson is suing bart, charging that bart failed to ensure the safety of riders. wilson was stabbed to death last month on bart.kron four's terisa estacio has more on the family's demand for robert arns, attorney. "bart says on it's website that it cares about safety of passegers, but that is not true, the family wants this to be a turning point." (estacio track)

attorneys representing nia wilsons' family came out swinging friday... announcinga sweeping lawsuit against bart in the murder of the 18 year old. wilson was killed at the macarthur bart station on july 22. she had been on the platform with her two other sisters, when police say, transient john lee cowell approached the three and fatally stabbed nia in the neck. police say he also injured nia's sister, who survived the attack. arns. "the violent crime against nia could have been prevented if bart would have stopped fare evaders." attorneys representying nia's family point to fare evasion as a major contributor in nia's death.... cowell, had been cited before as a fare evader on bart. they believe if bart had a better system in place to crack down on fare evaders, then nia would still be alive. they also dropped this bombshell, that cowell had threated others on bart. arns. since being involved, we have been approached by a 72 year old woman who said that cowell threatened her. besides

seeking monetary compensation - the attorney's say the family is also hoping with this suit will increase safety on bart for all passengers. arns. we want better safety for everyone. accuse him ofinappropriate sexual conversations with a minor.. christopher florio was working as a music teacher at harker upper school in san jose at the time. florio had been under investigation since june. harker upper school has not commented on the cast. there's no response yet from the california youth symphony. bart director district 1it's really like a needle in a haystack, they're looking for people who are evading bart when they could just stand in front of the gates. debora allen sits on the bart board of directors. she says what they have learned so far from this pilot enforcement program is that the problem is worse than they thought. sound from - debora allen - bart director district 1the problem is worse than we thought, a lot of evaders. in just two months 15% of those riders asked had not paid their bart ride. fare evasion is the gateway crime, it's very unlikely that a person who commits a crime in september bart police will be presenting the bart board of directors an official update on this pilot program and provide numbers showing it's success or failure so it's early to judge it. but debora allen says the money could be better spent. sound from - debora allen - bart director district 1why not have those officers at the gates of the

during a memorial service to remember fallen chp officer, kirk griess. griess was killed during during a traffic stop last week by a driver who's been arrested for reckless driving and vehiclular manslaughter. police say sean walker of rocklin was speeding on the shoulder of the highway while checking his cell phone at the time of the crash. mourners remembered officer griss as a "cop's cop"... and a wonderful father and husband. ( marty ) officer griss and jaime manuel of vallejo were both killed on august 10th. griss had pulled manuel's s-u-v over on westbound i-80 ( marty )jaime manuel - was from the philippines. friends say he came to the u.s. 10 years ago. a go-fund-me page has been created to raise money to pay for returning his remains to his family in the philippines.

( marty ) a judge is ordering a mental evaluation for the man accused of starting the holy fire in southern california. forrest clark was in court friday. in court -- clark said, he was not guilty and he then started rambling. his arraignment was suspended after several outbursts. the 51- year old is accused of igniting the nearly 23- thousand acre fire ..that prompted thousands of residents to evacuate their homes. that fire is now 85 -percent contained. ( marty )police in belmont say they have captured a group of thieves accused of stealing lottery tickets in two different bay area cities. kron 4's charles clifford has more from redwood city. the belmont police department says that 4 people have been arrested for allegedly stealing lottery tickets from multiple convenience stores and liquor stores along the peninsula.22 year old shawn

ray, 21 year old michael walker, 22 year olalexander castillo and 21 year old jose sotomayer are believed to have committed more than a dozen burglaries at stores between san francisco and san jose. 3 burglaries occurred in belmont, this am/pm station along ralston was robbed twice. the owner tells kron 4, that in the middle of the night the thieves smashed the front door of the store and grabbed lottery tickets and cigarettes from behind the counter. captain patrick halleran with the belmont police department says that after the suspects took tickets, they would start playing them.sot scratching off the numbers and set the winners aside and then they would go to gas stations or convenience stores in san francisco or san jose and redeem the tickets for money. investigators believe the thieves probably made thousands of dollars turning in winning tickets but they are now facing criminal charges for burglary, conspiracy, and possession of stolen property.police also

california judge granted a temporary restraining order on the deportation of reunited families. the move comes from u-s district judge dana sabraw... and stops the removal of both parent and child-- so parents can help their children with asylum hearings. the government says the childrens' rights to asylum hearings were waived when the parents signed paperwork for their children to be deported with them. however the plaintiffs say the documents were not "knowingly or voluntarily" signed. ( marty )after 3-days... a man that went hiking in yosemite valley is still missing. this is john cogdell. john is an national park service employee. he was last seen wednesday in the upper pines camp ground in yosemite valley. yosemite national park officals say he's five foot ten, and weighs two hundred pounds. if you've seen this man you're asked to call police. year old alexander castillo and 21 year old jose sotomayer are believed to have committed more than a dozen burglaries at stores between san francisco and san jose. 3 burglaries occurred in belmont, this am/pm station along ralston was robbed twice. the owner tells kron 4, that in the middle of the night the thieves smashed the front door of the store and grabbed lottery tickets and cigarettes from behind the counter. captain patrick halleran with the belmont police department says that after the suspects took tickets, they would start playing them.sot scratching off the numbers and set the winners aside and then they would go to gas stations or convenience stores in san francisco or san jose and redeem the tickets for money. investigators believe the thieves probably made thousands of dollars turning in winning tickets but they are now facing criminal charges for burglary, conspiracy, and possession of stolen property.police also say they are looking for additional suspects.sotwe have additonal leads we are following up on. this is an ongoing investigation. for the man accused of starting the holy fire in southern california. forrest clark was in court friday. in court -- clark said, he was not guilty and he then started rambling. his arraignment was suspended after several outbursts. the 51- year old is accused of igniting the nearly 23- thousand acre fire ..that prompted thousands of residents to evacuate their homes. that fire is now 85 -percent contained. ( marty )police in belmont say they have captured a group of thieves accused of stealing lottery tickets in two different bay area cities. kron 4's charles clifford has more from redwood city. the belmont police department says that 4 people have been arrested for allegedly stealing lottery tickets from multiple convenience stores and liquor stores along the peninsula.22 year old shawn ray, 21 year old michael walker, 22 year old alexander castillo and 21 year old jose sotomayer are believed to have committed more than a dozen burglaries at stores between san francisco and san jose. 3
