a local fire department is accusing verizon of slowing down its internet service - right in the middle of the mendocino complex fire. kron4's dan kerman explains how it happened and the action being taken now . while battling the mendocino complex fire in and around lake county, santa clara county firefighters were unable to use communicate with each other or the public over the internet. in a declaration submitted to a federal judge, the county's fire chief says that's

because his firefighters internet service provider verizon wireless throttled down their internet speed.sot capt bill murphy/santa clara county fire 23-32their ability to communicate that way using the internet was almost ineffective, reducing that speed down to 1/200th of what you would expectthe chief says "throttling was actively impeding county fire's ability to provide crisis response and essential emergency services." the chief submitted emails sent to verizon asking that the speed be restored, but verizon said "to get the data speeds restored (the fire department would need to move to a higher cost plan... ) first suggesting an increase from $37.99 to $39.99 and later a plan costing $99.99 verizon now says it "this was a customer support mistake..... we have a practice to remove data speed restrictions when contacted in emergency situations.... we
