( robin )breaking overnight... a united airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing. it happened at s-f-o around 1-40 this morning... after the pilot hit a flock of birds. this is a picture of the route the pilot took when turning the plane around back to s-f-o. that flight was about 4- hundred-and-50 feet in the air at the time. the pilot was able to dump some fuel and land the plane safely. right now mechanics are checking the aircraft for any damages. everyone who was onboard is expected to depart s-f-o later this morning

million people already seeing the first signs of hurricane lane ... a lot of families outside the hazard areas havve been advised to shelter at home.gonna be a serious flooding event. there's already a foot of rain in the big island. and serious flooding event we need people to prepare for. so helping people remember to stock up on supplies, stay out of water filled roadways until the govt gives an all clear. and pay attention to local resources for information.for those that have to head to an evacutation center, we've also pre- positioned supplies. cots, blankets, comfort kits, emergency supplies on the different islands ready to go but they have to go prepared... the government asks people to prepare for 14 days so they'll bring supplies for 14 daysthe red cross will be there for visitors that are stranded. with hundreds of thousands of tourists in hawaii during an event like this, that's also a population we plan foronce the storm is over ... more help will be readily available.this is a national operation. we'll deploy volunteers from maine to alaska to california to

( robin )police need your help in identifying this man. he was at the warm springs bart station in fremont during the time of a stabbing. we first told you about this story yesterday. police say the man is a person of interest. he's described as a white or hispanic male, late 20's early 30's, about 5'8", 160-pounds, wearing a black sweat shirt with a san francisco giants logo on the left side of his chest, wearing a black knit cap. police say if you see him, don't approach him, instead give them a call

to get that information to our dispatch center. if you see him anywhere near or in the city of fremont or any other city for that matter call 9-1-1 so they can make the arrest">( robin )bart officials say the stabbing victim remains hospitalized... in stable condition with non life threatening injuries. ( robin )new this morning... a south bay music teacher is arrested and accused of exposing himself to three of his students. william colvert has been employed at the almaden school of music and art in san jose for the last 10 years. colvert is accused of exposing himelf to three young girls while giving private lessons at the victim's homes. police say the incidents happened over the course of the last year. all of the girls were 10- years-old or younger. ( robin )alameda county prosecutors say they're now seeking the death penalty... for a man who killed a hayward police officer. it happened 3-years ago when 24-year-old mark estrada from oakland... shot and killed sergaent scott lunger. lunger had pulled estrada over for swerving through

traffic... and almost hitting several cars. estrada's trial is scheduled to begin on november 26th. ( robin )in national news... a funeral is held for the three- year-old from georgia... who died at a new mexico compound. 11 other emaciated children rescued from the compound. that 3-year olds father... and four other suspects are now fighting for their freedom. reporter john lorinc has the details. all charges dropped.that's what the five adults accused of abusing children at a new mexico compound want.defense attorneys filed motions for their clients thursday.thomas clark/defense attorney"if these people were white and christian nobody would bat an eye at the idea of faith healing, or praying over a body. or touching a body and quoting scripture. but when black muslims do it, there seems to be something nefarious."the lawyers say the suspects have been in custody for more than ten-days without having a preliminary hearing. that's against the law in new mexico.one of the suspects.....siraj wahhaj.....is not going to be extradited to georgia for a

been halted aftean incident at san jose state university. as kron four's rob fladeboe explains the campus has been shaken by the robbery and kidnapping of a student. popular 7-11, just across the street from the university's busy south garage. the brazen, daylight crime putting a damper on the evening plans of sophomore hannah garzota who lives right around the cornerhannah garzota/sophomore "....last night i just stayed in my apartment and decided i wasn't leaving, i told my friends to just stay

but it's scary to know that this happened near campus and so close to where i live...." rob fladeboe/san jose "...in a statement the university said there are more surveillance camerasacross campus this year and an increase police presence on and around campus. there are also surveillance cameras both inside and outside the 711 but san jose police, which has jurisdiction in this case, has so far released no information about what the video might show. in san jose rob fladeboe ron4news (robin) two suspects were arrested wednesday for a homicide and robbery that occurred at a vallejo hotel monday. 22-year-old devonte hicks and 31-year-old jessica mccraven were arrested and booked into the solano county jail on suspicion of murder and robbery. police found the victim in the hotel room in the 1400 block of enterprise street just before 10 monday night.. his identity has not been released. now face murder charges in the death of a beloved east bay restaurant owner. the beating was captured on security camera. kron 4's justine waldman has details on how police tracked down the two suspects and reaction from the victim's family on the arrests. the surveillance video showing the assault on cindy le (lay) is sickening.in april, the 61 year old was attacked outside of her restaurant in alameda around 11pm she died a few days later.long time customers still miss her. sot oh she was just a delighton monday, alameda police arrested two ex-con's for her murder. 38-year old paul paez and 39-year old donte holloway both from oakland.police tracked them down using surveillance video, dmv databases, licence plate readers and cell phone data. court documents show that paez followed le after closing her restaurant in oakland to alameda.and he allegedly tried to steal her purse, when she resisted, he punched her in the face.which made her fall

and hit her head on the sidewalk.holloway, the documents say, hit le and her daughters boyfriend who was with her, in the head with a metal pipe.documents show the holloway admitted to be there and swinging the pipe.sot it doesn't make it any better what happened happened we just want justice cindy's family asked that we not share any picture of her...but did send a statement to kron 4 after learning about the arrests: "this tragedy has been extremely difficult and painful for our entire family. however, the amount of love and support we have received from this community has helped ease our sorrows and helped restore our faith in humanity." ( robin )take a look at these pictures. police say these five suspects robbed the corte maderaapple store wednesday around noon. police say they rushed in and were only in the store for about one minute and managed to grab about 19 thousand dollars worth of goods and then fled out of the store. someone walking by was able to use their phone to take these pictures. police say they are woking on several tips.... and this latest crimes comes on the heels of several other thefts at apple ( robin )preliminary autopsy results show that iowa college student, mollie tibbetts, was

killed by "multiple sharp force injuries". the autopsy also officially confirmed the body found in a corn field was that of the 20 year old tibbetts. a suspect was arrested in her slaying tuesday. he is now charged with first degree murder. investigators allege cristhian bahena rivera abducted tibbetts while she was out for a run. he then allgedly killed her and later disposed of the body on a farm. ( robin )joseph deangelo, the man accused of being the 'golden state killer', was back in court thursday. a noticeably thinner deangelo sat expression-less behind bars. he did not enter a plea for the 13 murder charges also the statute of limitations has long run out for charging the 72 year old with the rapes... so prosecutors are lodging 13 new related kidnapping for robbery charges. ( robin )u.s. representative duncan hunter and his wife margaret... have pleaded not

guilty to charges that they illegally used his campaign account... for personal expenses. both appeared in federal court yesterday. and are accused of spending more than 250-thousand dollars on things ranging from family trips to italy, and hawaiito golf outings and school tuition. they essentially turned his campaign account into a household checkbook. a 47-page indictment was unsealed this week. the congressman represents the san diego area. bail was set at 15-thousand dollars for hunter... and 10-thousand dollars for his wife. prosecutors said bond could be set low because the hunters are living paycheck to paycheck. hunter claims the misuse of money was accidental. leaving court yesterday. some allies believe he will manage to remain in congress while fighting the charges. ( robin )you may soon have to ask for a plastic straw to go with your drink at california restaurants. lawmakers sent governor brown a bill yesterday that would prohibit full-service restaurants from giving out straws. it wouldn't ban straws outright. restaurants would provide them... only if customers ask. the law would affect full-service restaurants... not fast food establishments. restaurants would be warned for first and second violations. after that they'll be fined up to 300 dollars each year. up in redwood city... would have their baristas serving in bikinis. this has some members of the community concerned. the provocative attire may not meet the zoning codes. kron 4's gabe slate spoke with city officials to learn more. just south of redwood city, on the corner of el camino real and dumbarton avenue in an unincorporated area of san mateo county there sits a small drive thru coffee shop called caffino that recently closed. a new owner, pink pantherz expresso is trying open a similar business, a drive thru coffee shop, but with a twist. the baristas at the pink pantherz expresso coffee shops are known for wearing very revealing bikinis. they are bikini baristas. sound from david j. canepa - san mateo county supervisor - fith district "i can understand neighbors being concerned" san mateo county

they want to improve safety along a popular trail. they're hoping to intall 10 new security cameras along the ohlone greenway, which runs from berkeley to richmond. kron 4's charles clifford has the details. well, the ohlone greenway is four and a half miles long. it's a popular trail for walking, running, and biking. it's also used by commuters going to and from work. but, the trail has seen some problems over the years include in a homicide this past april near masonic avenue in albany. now the city of el cerrito wants to give the trail a safety upgrade.nats back in 2009, , the city of el cerrito installed 9 cameras along the ohlone greenway. they say the network has dettered crime and helped with the apprehension of suspects in crimes committed near the greenway. but after nearly a decade of operation, the camera's are showing their age. the plan now is to upgrade the existing cameras and install 10 new cameras between conlon avenue and san pablo avenue, at cutting boulevard and at fairmont avenue.the el cerrito police department say they are teaming up with other local law enforcement agencies to

( robin )california tourism officials are taking action ..... after a survey revealed they lost 20-million dollars in cancelled trips .. due to wildfires. they are teaming up with oregon and washington to reassure tourist it's safe

to visit. the three states formed the west coast tourism recovery coalition. all three have faced major wildfires and skies clogged with smoke this summer. but they say less than 1 percent of the states' combined area has been affected. maze to sf. ( darya ) breaking news from overnight... a plane has to make an emergency landing about an hour after taking off from s-f-o.( james ) the plane was forced to turn around and return to san francisco after hitting a flock of birds. kron 4's sara stinson is live at s-f-o with the details.

the united flig was headed to singapore until a flock of birds flew right into the plane with about 300 on board. the lot of the plane decided it would be safer to turn around to have the engine checked. take a look at this photo of the plane you can see there is some debris from the birds on the front of the plane. the boeing 787 dream liner took off from sfo around midnight for singapore and the birds hit at arojnd 450 feet altitude. the plane then dumped all of its fuel in the ocean to prepare for the emergency landing. you can see the flight path in this map. the pilot was able to land the plane safely back at sfo at around 1:45 in the morning. passengers say the flight staff handled the situation well. the plane is being inspected by mechanics right now. the singapore bound flight is expected to take off again at 8:45 this morning. hopefully this time the birds will get out of its flight path.

( darya ) police have arrested 2 people... for a homicide and robbery that happened at a vallejo hotel monday. 22-year-old devonte hicks and 31-year-old jessica mccraven were arrested and booked into the solano county jail. police found the victim in the hotel room in the 1400 block of enterprise street just before 10 monday night. his identity has not been released. ( james ) happening today... a fairfield father of 10... accused of child abuse... will be in court later this morning. jonathan allen is facing sex abuse... torture... and felony child abuse charges. he has pleaded ánot guilty. allen's children were removed from his home back in may... after they were found living in filth. the children are all under the age of 12. the victim's family on the arrests. the surveillance video showing the assault on cindy le (lay) is sickening.in april, the 61 year old was attacked outside of her restaurant in alameda around 11pm she died a few days later.long time customers still miss her. sot oh she was just a delighton monday, alameda police arrested two ex- con's for her murder.38-year old paul paez and 39-year old donte holloway both from oakland.police tracked them down using surveillance video, dmv databases, licence plate readers and cell phone data. court documents show that paez followed le after closing her restaurant in oakland to alameda.and he allegedly tried to steal her purse, when she resisted, he punched her in the face.which made her fall and hit her head on the sidewalk.holloway, the documents say, hit le and her daughters boyfriend who was with her, in the head with a metal pipe.documents show the holloway admitted to be there and swinging the pipe.sot it doesn't make it any better

murder charges in the death of a beloved east barestaurant owner. the beating was captured on security camera. kron 4's justine waldman has details on how police tracked down the two suspects and reaction from the victim's family on the arrests. the surveillance video showing the assault on cindy le (lay) is sickening.in april, the 61 year old was attacked outside of her restaurant in alameda around 11pm she died a few days later.long time customers still miss her. sot oh she was just a delighton monday, alameda police arrested two ex-con's for her murder. 38-year old paul paez and 39-year old donte holloway both from oakland.police tracked them down using surveillance video, dmv databases, licence plate

readers and cell phone data. court documents show that paez followed le after closing her restaurant in oakland to alameda.and he allegedly tried to steal her purse, when she resisted, he punched her in the face.which made her fall and hit her head on the sidewalk.holloway, the documents say, hit le and her daughters boyfriend who was with her, in the head with a metal pipe.documents show the holloway admitted to be there and swinging the pipe.sot it doesn't make it any better what happened happened we just want justice cindy's family asked that we not share any picture of her...but did send a statement to kron 4 after learning about the arrests: "this tragedy has been extremely difficult and painful for our entire family. however, the amount of love and support we have received from this community has helped ease our sorrows and helped restore our faith in humanity." ( james ) take a look at these pictures. police say these five people robbed the corte madera apple store wednesday around noon. the group rushed in... and were only in the store for about a minute. but they managed to grab about 19-thousand dollars worth of merchandise. someone walking by was able to use their phone to take these pictures. police say they are working on several tips and this latest crimes comes on the heels of several other thefts at apple stores. this store was also a target for theives over a year ago. theives stole 24-thousand dollars worth of merchandise then. ( james ) fire crews were able to quickly put out a fire

that burned outside the tesla plant in fremont. flames burned cardboard and then a structure. no one was hurt and less than an acre of grass burned. no word yet on what sparked the fire. ( darya ) californians wanting a plastic straw with their drink might soon have to ask for one. assembly lawmakers sent governor brown a bill that would prohibit restaurants from handing out plastic straws... unless a customer asks for one. fast food restaurants would be exempt from the bill. california cities have already adopted even stricter rules. santa cruz has already banned the use of plastic straws in restauarants altogether. a similar ban goes into effect in san francsico next year. ( darya ) a heads up for bart riders in the east bay... buses will be replacing bart trains on the oakland stops this weekend while crews work on the tracks. you can see on this map... a bus will take riders from the 19th street oakland station ... to the west oakland station. crews will also be doing construction on the macarthur station.

tibbetts is set for this sunday. and now we're learning the iowa college student -- who grew up in the bay area -- was stabbed to death. tibbetts' body was found in a cornfield earlier this week. she had been missing since going on a jog back on july 18th. cristhian rivera led authorities to tibbetts' remains. he claims to remember getting angry at her and hiding her body... but not actually killing her. ( darya ) lawyers for the man acquitted in the 20-15 death of kate steinle want federal charges against their client delayed. steinle was walking on a san francisco pier with her father when she was shot and killed. garcia zarate was acquitted of murder and involuntary manslaughter... but convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm. he faces federal charges for the same crime. being charged twice

for the same crime is generally considered unconstitutional. the supreme court is set to hear a separate case challenging an exception to that rule. garcia zarate's lawyers want his case delayed until the supreme court rules on the separate case. ( james ) the man accused of being the golden state killer is facing charges across california... but prosecutors in sacramento will consolidate those charges into one case. joseph deangelo was in court yesterday. he's facing 13 murder charges. but the statute of limitations has long run out for charging the 72-year-old with the rapes of nearly 50 women during the 1970's and 80's. so prosecutors are charging him with 13 kidnapping-related charges. prosecutors have not decided whether to seek the death penalty.
