plane crashed earlier today in the marsh next to the palo alto airport. good evening i'm grant lodes. (vicki) and i'm vicki liviakis. the pilot was a volunteer for "angel flight". it's a non profit that helps transport those in need of specialized medical care. kron4's terisa estacio joins us live now from palo alto-- with details on the crash. terisa? .. the plane is right over there... still deep the in the marsh. just a short time ago, the coroner removed the pilots body.... we know he was in his 60s. there were two other people, two females also aboard and they were taken by ambulance to stanford after the plane crashed. (take pkg) the small plane had three passengers aboard... fire fighters say they received the 911 call tuesday morning and rushed to the scene - which was about a quarter mile from the runway. geo blackshire, we found one walking, one on wing, pilot was dead, they were taking to the hospital. steve philipson, flight instructor. i was in flight

and i could tell he did not know the runway. steve philipson, a flight instructor says he was listening to the exchange between the tower and the pilot, who has not been indentified. steve. a colleague says they saw the plane hit the runway, hit the propeller, then try to come up but couldn't - didn't have the energy, and crashed. kron four has learned the pilot was a volunteer with angel flight... an organziation that flys people in need to medical facilities. the plane orginated in redding, and according to a spokesperson with angel flight was taking two females to the lucille packard childrens hospital for medical care. steve. it is a crushing loss. aviation is a tight group. i did not know him personally, but it is painful and upsetting. (estacio live) representagive vs with the national transportation safety administration along with the faa are on scene... a spokesperson withthe ntsb says they are concerned about the tide coming in and moving the plane, so they are focused right now on stabilizing the situation.... they will also be handling the investigation into the crash.

(vicki) another big another big story we're following for you tonight... a perceived shortage of pilots at cal-fire.(grant) kron four's rob fladeboe join us now live from cal-fire's air attack base in hollister with the details. rob? (rob live) the shortage is putting a strain on resources with plenty of fire season still to go. calfire confirming that an average of four of the state's s-2 tankers, like these, have been grounded on certain days in august because there was no pilot availabe to fly them. calfire confirms it is short on pilots, especially those that fly the s-2 tankers like these here in hollister and

other bases around the state. but at no time has that meant delay in responding to fires says calfire deputy director mike mohler.mike mohler/cfire "....operationally, we bring on additional aircraft to fill in to respond as part of our initial response, so is there a pilot shortage, yes, but for response in having aircraft over fires, absolutely not..."yes, calfire says there have been times when aircraft were grounded for lack of pilots. but sometinmes it's just the opposite. fire season is now year round and the aircraft need that much more maintenence and sometimes the pilot can be grounded for safety's sake says mohler.mike mohler/calfire ".....yes, there may be a calfire aircraft sitting on the runway but it's in anticipation of either maintenence or a pilot that's off that day or a pilot that has flown too many hours...."as to what's behind the shortage. many pilots have retired or are about to while others are being lured away by the private sector. flying through steep terrain and smoke to drop retardant on a wildfire is a dangerous job with difficult hours and there has been one ath . mike mohler/calfire "....yes, you could say perfect storm, it's a combination of our aircraft not being a seasonal aircraft but rather a year round aircraft so maintenance is a big, big issue for us, pilots are retiring, there's attrition in the fire service

(grant) and the brush fire burning in nevada is nearly contained. the fire was sparked by a plane crash near the "slide bowl" area of the mount rose ski resort. the fire has burned 64-acres... and as of right now it is 95-percent contained. there were two people aboard the plane when it crash. so far, officials have only confirmed one death. (vicki) developing tonight... all eyes are on the gulf of mexico as tropical storm gordon makes its way to the northern gulf coast. the national hurricane center expects gordon to strengthen to a hurricane before making landfall, with sustained winds of at least 74-miles-per-hour. flooding remains a major concern. seawater could spill onshore as high as 3 to 5 feet, bringing significant

it's a crime that can happen withing seconds....car windows smashed, personal items like electronics, luggage, and shopping bags grabbed.....and the culpruits quickly driving away on the freeway.both the south san francisco police department and burlingame pd says the parking lots of hotels off the 101 corridor are frequent targets for auto burglariessan bruno police says their number one location for car break ins happens in the tanforan parking lot....and it's no uncommon for it to happen 4-5 times a day there. (maureen) not only are in and out burger joints popular spots for a quick bite to eat, but a source of the san mateo county sheriffs department says they're also popular spots for car break-ins up and down the peninsulathey said the same thing about the parking lots of gyms 24 hour fitness. make sure you take everything out of your car that might entice a criminal, it could be even an empty backpack because they believe something is in there, san mateo police sargent amanda von glahn says they too see an uptick of car burglaries in their shopping centers but the downtown parking garages are also frequent targets. she says they find the criminals of these types of crimes are usually more sophisicated operations of two or more theives working together.....she warns that putting items in the trunk after you get where you are going isn't enough to prevent being a victim.n because you have to keep in mind that these criminals are also surveilling the parking lots so they'll watch you get out of your vehicle, put your bags into your trunk and then leave and they'll know exactly where to go to get those items she says it's a good idea to put your valuables in your trunk before you get to your desination......not after. maureen kelly kron4news.

((ashley)) it's not just the bail bond industry worried about its future.. several crime victim groups have joined together to try and reverse the law eliminating cash bail. ((pkg))nats --"this is his rapsheet and all the criminal activity he's had.."topo padilla and other bail bond agents across the state are rallying together.pushing for a ballot measure to let california voters decide whether to eliminate cash bail. it happened early saturday morning outside of the vagabond inn on west "a" street. police say the suspect drove up in a black 4-door sedan... and shot the 42-year-old victim. he was taken to the hospital where he later died of his injuries. the suspect is described as a hispanic man between 30 and 40 years old... with black hair, brown eyes, and wearing glasses. police are asking for anyone with information to please come forward. (grant) in the east bay. three suspects are behind bars...in connection with a victoria's secret robbery. it happened last thursday at broadway plaza in downton walnut creek. there officers say shaka perdue and dionne jackson grabbed around three grand in merchandise...a nd jumped into a waiting vehicle outside the store. police say the driver of the vehicle...erika addison sped off...however... the walnut creek special enforcment team was parked just four cars in front of them...and watched all their devious actions. the trio was arrested ...authorities say it's no secret...that crime doesn't

(catherine) the sequined red slippers were stolen from a judy garland museum in grand rapids minnesota... in 2005. the shoes - one of four known pairs the actress worein the 19-39 movie. their estimated value ranges from one million to 3-million dollars. no suspects have been announced yet...and investigators suggest they're still in the process of finding them. we do know the slippers were recovered because of a sting operation....after someone approached the company that insures the shoes about a year ago. offering information on getting them back.. meantime....authorities say they were checking upon a string of sometimes strange leads..

(ken) homes and campgrounds are being evacuated because of a quick-moving wildfire in placer county. officials say the flames are rapidly spreading in the tahoe national forest-- near emigrant gap. so far the fire has burned 500 acres and is just 10-percent contained. cal fire says air tankers, helicopters, and strike crews are are assisting the u-s forest service's fire management team. (ken) new at six tonight -- university of california officials say they are committing to using only clean and renewable energy at all of its ten campuses and five medical centers by 2025. officials say it's a major expansion of its already existing carbon neutrality initiative, and fitting within its efforts to be a leader in addressing climate change. they plan on using two percent less engery each year on campuses and other properties. in order to meet that goal -- u-c officials say new structures and major renovations after june 20-19 will not burn fossil fuels for
