following this morning in palo alto. a pilot died in a plane crash ... and a mother and daughter who were passengers on that plane... are recovering from injuries this morning. the mother and daughter were going to a surgical appointment at lucile packard children's hospital at stanford. firefighters say, they received a 9-1-1 call tuesday morning, and rushed to the crash scene - which was about a quarter- mile from the runway. the pilot flew for a non-profit group called "angel flight" -- an organization that helps transport those in need of specialized medical care. kron 4s ali reid the latest from palo alto. the national transportation safety board is leading this investigation.right now parts of the plane are still stuck inside the mud.pkgthe n-t-s-b is recovering wreckage ..the engine is buried in the mud out there. we're gonna extract it hopefully tomorrowdebris will be brought to a secure facility, where experts will try to piece together what happened. for now, we know the

pilot was not familiar with the palo alto airport.the tower had to direct him.but something went wrong.the airplane reportedly bounced during the landing. the pilot opted to go around, which is to add power, clean up landing gear and flaps and come around for another circuitit bounces from nose wheel to main wheel, and appears to have struck the propeller, which can be damaging to the engineas the pilot tried to circle, tragedy struck.the accident site was about 300 feet from the end of the runwaythe mother and child on board survived.one of the persons was ambulatory and crawled out on the wing. the other person needed some assistance getting out of the airplaneunfortunately, the volunteer angel flight pilot lost his life while giving back to a family in need.it's a crushing loss, aviation is a small community.i have friends that fly in angel flight. losing anyone in that fraternity is painful.standup the n-t-s-b says a preliminary report will be released in a week or 2.we may not find out officially what caused the accident until a year from now. reporting live from palo alto ... ali reid ... kron 4 news.

( robin )( robin )( robin )( robin ) new this new this morning... police in the east bay are looking for a man accused of sexual assualt. police say a series of attempted sexual assaults happened in and around crown memorial state beach in alameda. the latest attacked happened yesterday. police are also investigating attacks that happened on saturday and back on august 6th. each victim gave police a similar description of the attacker. ( robin )also in the east bay... police in hayward are looking for a man after a deadly shooting. it happened early saturday morning outside of the vagabond inn on west "a" street. police say the suspect drove up in a black 4-door sedan... and shot the 42-year-old victim. he was taken to the hospital where he later died of his injuries. the suspect is described as

a hispanic man between 30 and 40 years old... with black ha, brown eyes, and wearing glasses. police are asking for anyone with information to please come forward. ( robin )c-h-p made a major drug bust in redwood city. take a look at this -- police found more than 10-thousand dollars in cash... 12- pounds of marijuana... 45- grams of cocaine... plus -- several bottles of prescription drugs and drug paraphernalia on monday. the driver was taken into custody after police stopped him to do a welfare check. the c-h-p says, the driver was under the influence ... and also had three prior d-u-i's. ( robin )residents in one bay area neighborhood are saying they're tired of the sideshows. it keeps happening on moyers road in richmond... and people who live there say the city is doing nothing to stop it. kron4's michelle kingston has the story. on bikes, riding around the neighborhood, to me, that's just a problem for them ... just their safety."just a few months ago a richmond police oficer was injured trying to break up a sideshow near marina parkway ... neighbors on moyers road have been trying to prevent anything like that from happening here ... but say city leaders aren't doing anything. we called the mayors office on tuesday afternoon but have not heard back.in richmond michelle kingston kron 4 news ( robin )( robin )neighbors along a small street in san francisco say they are fed up with r-v's taking up parking spots and causing other problems. now their neighborhood supervisors are working with the city to prevent r-v's from parking there overnight. the focus is on alemany boulevard in san francisco's outer mission and excelsior districts. signs are already posted stating oversized vehicles... 22-feet long or seven-feet high... are

not allowed to park overnight. renters and homeowners say they have recieved tickets for being forced to park in "no parking zones." < "any parking changes that happen need to be legislated by the sfmta board. we are a policy board, but we also pass legislation.">( robin ) san francisco municipal transportation officials say they hope to find a solution to the street problem. the board will take up the issue at its next meeting in two weeks. if a plan is approved to add parking restrictions... the signs could go up immediately after a decision is reached. ( robin )on the peninsula... police say car break-ins are becoming an increasing problem in san mateo county. the crime has been trending upwards for the past two years. kron 4's maureen kelly shows us where some of the so-called break-in "hot spots" are. it's a crime that can happen withing seconds....car windows smashed, personal items like electronics, luggage, and shopping bags grabbed.....and the culpruits quickly driving away on the freeway.both the

south san francisco police department and burlingame pd says the parking lots of hotels off the 101 corridor are frequent targets for auto burglariessan bruno police says their number one location for car break ins happens in the tanforan parking lot....and it's no uncommon for it to happen 4-5 times a day there. (maureen) not only are in and out burger joints popular spots for a quick bite to eat, but a source of the san mateo county sheriffs department says they're also popular spots for car break-ins up and down the peninsulathey said the same thing about the parking lots of gyms 24 hour fitness. make sure you take everything out of your car that might entice a criminal, it could be even an empty backpack because they believe something is in there, san mateo police sargent amanda von glahn says they too see an uptick of car burglaries in their shopping centers but the downtown parking garages are also frequent targets. she says they find the criminals of these types of crimes are

usually more sophisicated operations of two or more theives working together.....she warns that putting items in the trunk after you get where you are going isn't enough to prevent being a victim.n because you have to keep in mind that these criminals are also surveilling the parking lots so they'll watch you get out of your vehicle, put your bags into your trunk and then leave and they'll know exactly where to go to get those items she says it's a good idea to put your valuables in your trunk before you get to your desination......not after. maureen kelly kron4news. safeway gas station in their city. opponents say, they are concerned about increased traffic and increased pollution ... since across the street sits a pre-school, day care center, and elementary school. petaluma's planning commission has already approved the plan to replace the building with the 16- pump gas station and convenience store. the project would be adjacent to the safeway grocery store that already exists in the shopping center. opponents have appealed to the city council. ( robin )safeway released a statement saying in part -- "the project has been thoroughly vetted, with fourteen studies by the city of petaluma, safeway, and local school district .... confirming the gas station meets all traffic, environmental, health and safety standards. we look forward to the opportunity to move forward." north fire has now burned 700 acres and is just 10 percent contained. officials say the flames have forced evacuations... and are rapidly spreading in the tahoe national forest-- near emigrant gap. cal fire says air tankers, helicopters, and strike crews are are assisting the u-s forest service's fire management team. ( robin )cal fire is facing a staffing issue through one of their earliest and busiest fire seasons on record, kron four's rob fladeboe explains why some aircrafts are being grounded. rob fladeboe/hollister "...the pilot shortage is putting a strain on resources. califire confirming that an average of four aircraft were grounded on certain days in august because there were no pilots to fly them..." calfire confirms it is short on pilots, especially those that fly the s-2 tankers like these here in hollister and other bases around the state. but at no time has that meant delay in responding to fires says calfire deputy director

mike mohler.mike mohler/calfire "....operationally, we bring on additional aircraft to fill in to respond as part of our initial response, so is there a pilot shortage, yes, but for response in having aircraft over fires, absolutely not..."yes, calfire says there have been times when aircraft were grounded for lack of pilots. but sometinmes it's just the opposite. fire season is now year round and the aircraft need that much more maintenence and sometimes the pilot can be grounded for safety's sake says mohler.mike mohler/calfire ".....yes, there may be a calfire aircraft sitting on the runway but it's in anticipation of either maintenence or a pilot that's off that day or a pilot that has flown too many hours...."as to what's behind the shortage. many pilots have retired or are about to while others are being lured away by the private sector. flying through steep terrain and smoke to drop retardant on a wildfire is a dangerous job with difficult hours and there has been one death . mike mohler/calfire "....yes, you could say perfect storm, it's a combination of our aircraft not being a seasonal aircraft but rather a year round aircraft so maintenance is a big, big issue for us, pilots are retiring, there's attrition in the fire service and already this summer we've seen the biggest fire in calfire's history..."rob fladeboe/hollister "....going forward calfire says it is looking to hire as many 40 new pilots over the next few years. in hollister rob fladeboe kron4news

( robin ) university of california officials say they are committing to using only clean and renewable energy... at all of its ten campuses and five medical centers. officials say it's a major expansion of its already existing carbon neutrality initiative, and fitting within its efforts to be a leader in climate change. the plan is to use two percent less engery each year on campuses and other properties. in order to meet that goal -- u-c officials say new structures and major renovations after june 20-19 will not burn

fossil fuels for heating. each u-c campus will have to cut landfill-bound waste by 25 percent before 20-25 and by 50 percent before 20-25 and by 50 percent before 20-30. ( robin )facebook expanded its silicon valley footprint by opening up a frank gehry- designed expansion in menlo park. it's called "m-p-k 21" the building features a 3- point-6 acre rooftop garden that is home to more than 200 trees. the project was built in less than 18 months, and is also environmentally friendly. facebook says the reclaimed water system in the building will save 17 million gallons of water a year... while solar panels on the roof will generate 2- million kilowats of electricity each year. ( robin )in the east bay ... three suspects are behind bars after stealing items from a victoria's secret. it happened last thursday at broadway plaza in downton walnut creek. police say shaka perdue and dionne jackson grabbed nearly three- thousand dollars in merchandise... and jumped into a waiting vehicle outside the store. police say the driver of the vehicle... erika addison... sped off. police quickly caught up to them...and took them all into custody. ( robin )we now know the identity of the woman who was killed by a car ... after she jumped out of an ambulance. officers tell us, 38-year-old jasmine johnson... jumped out of an ambulance during transport ... and was hit and killed by a car. it happened monday morning on the connector ramp... from southbound 6-80 to westbound 5- 80 in dublin. authorities say, the pleasanton resident overpowered a paramedic ... and jumped out as the ambulance was coming to a stop. police say, the patient was being taken from valley care hospital in pleasanton

... to the john george psychiatric hospital in san leandro. ( robin )police in the east bay are asking for the public's help in finding two suspects they say stole several packages from an apartment complex. it was all caught on camera. officials say the suspects broke into this package kiosk in concord.. and took items that did not belong to them. the kiosk system is called luxer and is usually opened with a code sent to the recievers cell phone. right now - investigators are still trying to figure out how the men were able to open the kiosk. no word on what the suspects got away with. ( robin )the amador county sheriff's department is investigating a deadly shooting by an off-duty chp officer... after killing his wife and injuring a store owner... just before turning the gun on himself. the amador county sheriff says brad wheat fired his semi-automatic handgun into a store window... where his wife mary wheat and the store owner were. after that he made

his way inside. there was then a struggle. officials say brad shot the store owner in the shoulder. then-- the three of them made their way into the parking lot just as a deputy arrived on scene. < "when he got there, shots were being fired. so obviously it was a hot scene at that point.">( robin ) the shop owner was able to escape when the struggle continued outside the store. the shots fired during the struggle killed the officers wife just before he turned the gun on himself. police say all three of the people involved were close friends. it's been 11 months since the tubbs fire destroyed thousands of homes across the north bay... including many houses in the santa rosa neighborhood of fountain grove. but since last october, only one home in fountain grove has been completed... and the rebuilding effort is going very slow. kron 4's charles clifford has an update. well, in santa rosa, most of the homes destroyed by the tubbs fire were either in coffey park or here in fountain grove. the rebuilding effort is speeding up in coffey park where 9 homes have been finished and hundreds more are under construction but here in fountain grove progress is moving much slower and in fact, many people, have given up completely.natsby mid september, tom francois' new home should be finished. his will be the first house in

fountain grove to be completed following last years destructive wildfires. sotit was fast tracked for me brother. because we jumped in really early.but tom is lucky. across fountain grove, the rebuilding process is very slow going. about 1800 strucutres were destroyed by the tubbs fire in fountain grove, but fewer than 200 homes are currently under construction. many of the houses in foutain grove are large and a lot of homeowners are unable to rebuild because they are under insurred. many people, including tom's neighbors, have given up all together and sold their property.sotsome of these wonderfull people struggle with being under insured or insurance companies not being cooperative.but even though the work is slow going , progress is being made. on tuesday afternon, contractors could be seen putting up roofs, painting and keeping busy. tom says that once is house is done he hopes to move in by mid october. he credits his insurance company, friends and family for making it happen.sot if it weren't for them. i'd be in a pickle finally, i talked to several contractors today and asked them when construction would be finished here in fountain grove. they said that the area will never be fully restored to what it was before the fire and that it could take 5 to 10 years to finished building all the homes.in santa rosa, charles clifford kron 4 news.

( will ) nancy dellamaria and her daughter 16-year-old chloe king were passengers on the plane. they were on their way to lucile packard children's hospital in stanford. but their plane went down about a quarter mile from the runway. witnesses say the plane bounced during the landing... which may have damaged the engine. as the pilot made a second landing attempt... he crashed. dellamaria and king are now hospitalized. there is no word yet on how they're doing. the pilot was a volunteer with "angel flight"... which offers free medical transport to people with serious medical conditions.

( darya ) there have been several attempted sexual assaults around crown memorial state beach in alameda. kron 4's sara stinson joins us from the police department with the latest. sara... alameda police are searching for a man in his 20's who they believe is connected to a series of attempted sexual assaults.take vo: the incidents happened within the last month at robert w. crown state beach.the first attempted sexual assault was reported august sixth and then two more times in that same park area this week...the most recent incident was reported yesterday.police say each vicitim described the same suspect being an african american man in his early to mid 20's with a thin build, short curly hair, and about five, five.alameda police are working alongside the east bay regional park district police department on this case.

( darya ) a big story this morning... bart station agents say they are working in fear... over a lack of security once they leave the booth. a union representative for bart's 300- station agents says the macarthur station in oakland has become one of the most dangerous for passengers and workers. in july... 18- year-old nia wilson was stabbed to death at that station. and over the labor day weekend... an agent was hit from behind while trying to help two women who

were being harassed. ( darya ) it is against company policy for station agents to carry any sort of weapon. bart police are still looking for the attacker. ( james ) police are investigating an attack at the lafayette bart station. it happened just before 4:30 yesterday morning. police say a woman was walking to the station... when 2 people pulled up next to her in a dark colored sedan. both were wearing masks. they then grabbed the woman and tried to force her into their car. she was able to break free and yell for help. her attackers drove off. ( james ) in the south bay... police have arrested two men... accused of murdering a 19-year-old near a high school in san jose.

artierey sherry and paul soulik are now in custody. they're accused of killing lozeno nava back in october. nava was shot to near oak grove high school. ( james ) san jose police have also arrested this man.. antonio sandoval.. for the june 20-14 murder of jose hurtado. hurtado died after being stabbed on piercy road in san jose. sandoval was arrested yesterday and is now at the santa clara county jail on one count of murder. ( darya ) in the east bay... two oakland police officers were injured while on a domestic violence call. the officers were at a home in the 11-hundred block of 89th avenue yesterday morning. a woman called police to say her ex-boyfriend had a gun and was trying to get in her front door. the officers confronted the man and they say he assualted them. more officers arrived on scene.. and used a taser to stop the man. the two officers were taken to the hospital and released.

the man was arrested and taken to jail. ( darya ) the berkeley police department is trying to find this man... 42-year-old mark edward jacobson. he is watned for a stabbing. officers got a call yesterday morning about a woman screaming for help. a woman in her 70's was found suffering from a stab wound. jacobson is wanted for attempted murder and may be armed and dangerous. ( darya ) people living in one bay area neighborhood say they are tired of all of the sideshows keeping them awake at night. the sideshows are happening on moyers road in richmond and now they want the city to do more to stop them. they say the sideshows are happening almost everyday. people say they fear for their safety and they want the city do do something before somebody gets hurt.

( james ) happening now... santa rosa police are looking for the person who stabbed a man at jacobs park. the victim suffered serious injuries but is expected to recover. a 25-hundred dollar reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. ( james ) santa clara sheriff's deputies arrested 20- year-old eric vargas-bonilla on suspicion of stealing a tesla in a home burglary. deputies got a call about a home burglary in los altos. the burglar also made off with a tesla. the car was spotted going southbound on 280.. deputies then began pursuing vargas-bonilla. the chase ended with a crash when he lost control of the car. vargas-bonilla was caught and arrested. tropical storm gordon is moving inland... and it's now blamed for one death. gordon made landfall near the alabama-mississippi stateline last night. in pensacola, florida -- a child died after a tree fell on top of a mobile home. 3 states -- mississippi, louisiana, and alabama are still under a state of emergency. as it makes its way inland... a big concern today is the potential for life-threatening storm surges. in louisiana-- the governor has activated 350 national guard members. ( darya ) it's been 11 months since the tubbs fire destroyed thousands of homes in the north bay. but since then... only one home in the fountain grove neighborhood has been rebuilt. in coffey park nine homes have been rebuilt.. and hundreds others are under construction. but fewer than 200 homes are cureently under construction in fountain grove. the rebuilding is moving much slower... leading some peole to just give up.. and sell their properties. by mid september tom francois' home will be finished.. making it the first one in the neighborhood. contractors say the area will never fully be restored to what it was before the fire... and that it could take five to ten years to finish building all the homes. ( james ) the north fire... which forced the evacuation of rural homes and campgrounds in placer county... has now spread to 700 acres. it is just 10 percent contained. officials say the flames are rapidly spreading in the tahoe national forest-- near emigrant gap. cal fire says air tankers, helicopters, and strike crews are are helping out the forest service's fire management team. name of the woman who was killed by a car... after she jumped out of an ambulance. dublin police say 38- year-old jasmine johnson jumped out of an ambulance... and was then hit and killed by a car. it happened monday morning on the connector ramp... from southbound 680 to westbound 580 in dublin. authorities say johnson overpowered a paramedic... and jumped out as the ambulance was coming to a stop. ( darya ) car break-ins are a growing problem in san mateo county. the south san francisco and burlingame police departments say the parking lots of hotels off the 101 corridor... are frequent targets for car burglaries. shopping centers and downtown parking garages are also being hit. ( james ) in the east bay... police are asking for help in finding 2 people who stole several packages from an apartment complex. and it was all caught on camera. the thieves broke into a package kiosk in concord. the kiosk system is usually opened with a code that's sent to the reciever's cell phone. right now - investigators are still trying to figure out how the thieves were able to open the kiosk. ( james ) also in the east bay... 3 people are behind bars... accused of stealing from victoria's secret. it happened last thursday at the broadway plaza in downton walnut creek. police say shaka perdue and dionne jackson grabbed nearly 3- thousand dollars in merchandise... and jumped into a waiting car. they were arrested along with the suspected driver -- erika addison. ( james ) in the north bay..... finding a gas station with cheap prices is attractive to most people ... but a group called "no gas

here" is fighting a plan to build a safeway gas station in petaluma. opponents say they're worried about increased traffic and increased pollution... especially because schools and a daycare are across the street. petaluma's planning commission has approved plans to build the 16- pump gas station and convenience store. ( james ) safey released a statement saying in part -- "the project has been thoroughly vetted with 14 studies by the city of petaluma, safeway, and local school district." ( darya ) neighbors along a small street in san francisco say they are fed up with r-v's taking up parking spots and causing other problems. now they're working with the city to prevent r-v's from parking there overnight. the focus is on alemany boulevard in the outer mission and excelsior

chloe king were passengers on the plane. they were on their way to lucile packard children's hospital in stanford. but their plane went down about a quarter mile from the runway. witnesses say the plane bounced during the landing... which may have damaged the engine. as the pilot made a second landing attempt... he crashed. dellamaria and king are now hospitalized. there is no word yet on how they're doing. the pilot was a volunteer with "angel flight"... which offers free medical transport to people with serious medical conditions.

( james ) san jose police have also arrested this man.. antonio sandoval.. for the june 20-14 murder of jose hurtado. hurtado died after being stabbed on piercy road in san jose. sandoval was arrested yesterday and is now at the santa clara county jail on one count of murder. ( darya ) in the east bay... two oakland police officers were injured while on a domestic violence call. the officers were at a home in the 11-hundred block of 89th avenue yesterday morning. a woman called police to say her ex-boyfriend had a gun and was trying to get in her front door. the officers confronted the man and they say he assualted them. more officers arrived on scene.. and used a taser to stop the man. the two officers were taken to the hospital and released. the man was arrested and taken to jail. find this man... 42-year-old mark edward jacobson. he is watned for a stabbing. officers got a call yesterday morning about a woman screaming for help. a woman in her 70's was found suffering from a stab wound. jacobson is wanted for attempted murder and may be armed and dangerous. ( james ) happening now... santa rosa police are looking for the person who stabbed a man at jacobs park. the victim suffered serious injuries but is expected to recover. a 25-hundred dollar reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. ( james ) santa clara sheriff's deputies arrested 20- year-old eric vargas-bonilla on suspicion of burglarizing a home and stealing a tesla. it happned in los altos. police spotted vargas-bonilla driving the stolen tesla southbound on 280. they arrested him after a short chase that ended with him losing lost control and crashing the car. ( darya ) it's been 11 months since the tubbs fire destroyed thousands of homes in the north bay. but since then... only one home in
