has mod near the palo alto airport. the volunteer pilot killed has now been identified. and two passengers, including a patient that was being transported to a nearby hospital-- are still recovering. good evening i'm vicki liviakis. (grant) and i'm grant lodes. kron4's maureen kelly has new information about the victims and the investigation into what caused the crash. .. this is a photo of the pilot who died while trying to help others.the organization he was volunteering for, angel flight west, a non profit that provides free rides to patients and their families, has identified him as w. john spencer. spencer had donated 125 flights, helping 75 families since 2014.tuesday's plane crash happened as spencer was transporting a 16 year old patient identified by family as 16 year old chloe king and her mother nancy dellamaria. they took off from redding so the teenager could undergo surgery at stanford's luenhospital. but t plane went podown's runway. now the patient and her mother are recovering from injuries sustained in the crash while lead ntsb investigator michael hune is trying to find out why it

happened. nat pop his first order of business.....looking to see if there is any data stored on the plane's instrumentation.so depending on what equipment is installed, whether the date it was there and actually recorded and whether it's to buy the accident so we may be able to reconstruct portions of the flighthe says the crash happened after the attempted to land.i have some witnesses to say he was porpoising, which is a nose to toes tail pitching and it does this along the runway and then the pilot initiated what we call a go around so he adds power cleans at the landing gear and flaps depending on the airplane where he is in the pattern to proceed around the traffic for another landing attempt but as i understand it he made that one initial landing did touch down pour post a little bit and then began his go round and that's when the accident happened the ntsb investigator says an unofficial transcript of radio communication indicates the pilot had some trouble locating the runway but says that is not unusual in a dense urban environment. maureen kelly kron4 news (grant) just in to kron 4...

several teenagers in american canyon are hospitalized-- after a fight during their lunch hour. it happened as the students were walking off the american canyon high school campus for lunch. 4-5 students between 15 and 16-years-old were then approached by two suspects... and were told to get on the ground. the students were then robbed of their shoes, phones, and wallets. they ran back on campus-- which caused a short lockdown. police were later able to track down the suspects and took two people into custody. the victims have non-life threatening injuries. (rob live) we're talking about a handgun. a glock 9 milemeter and a box of ammunition.the worry is, of course, that the gun could be used to committ another crime and that somebody could get hurt. this is surveillance video of someone santa clara police are calling a person ofinterest in this case. the video was shot last thursday near the corner of benton avenue and white drive where a home was burglarized at about 1 pm. the victim tells police the thieves got in through an unlocked door and made off with a play station, some designer apparel and a glock 9 milimeter handgun says santa clara police captain wahid kazem.captain wahid kazem/santa clara police "....anytime there is a gun stolen it is concerning but in this case the victim believes the gun was stolen by a group of juveniles and that is a second layer of concern, that the gun is in the hands of

young people..." the victim explained to police how the burglars ransacked his home and discovered ammunition for the weapon. police say they are taking the victim'stheory about juvenile perpetrators seriously, but what is not clear is whether the victim was someow targeted of if the burglary was a random crime. captain wahid kazem/sanat clara police "....i don't know of there was a preconceived idea of what was in the residence before the burglary or if it was simply a matter that they found the gun as they were going through the victims's belongings...."aside from the victim's suspicions, there is no evidence the perpetrators are local but police say they are nonetheless working with local schools in their search for suspects. police admit the person of of interest in the surveillance video may simply be someone passing by about the time the gun was stolen but they are calling on the public for help in this case. (on cam) police say the victim, a legal gun owner, insists both the gun and the ammuniton were separately secured in the home. but police say the case is a reminder that as an added measure of security, that gun owners should considerusing a gun lock and that such locks

underneath was immediately shutdown, and should the exterior glass break free. but by wednesday afternoon, the full sidewalk had reopened. after inspecting the crack, a city building inspector determined there was no theat of falling glass. "the exterior glazing is fractured yet the lamination will hold it in place as it is designed to do so."so far there have been no other complaint from residents regarding cracked glass... what remains unclear is what this glass cracked in the first place, which remains a troubling questionsotthis is a window system designed to withstand hurricane force winds and seismic events so, whether this is a one event or has to do with the sinking and tilting remains to be determined.

(grant) a big story tonight.. the transportation security administration is doing an about-face on its proposal to end screening at smaller airports...(vicki) catherine heenan is here with more on today's announcement at a congressional committee hearing.. signature solidified today will help tenants facing eviction capitol bureau reporter ashley zavala is live in sacramento tonight to explain how the new law will help. ashley? ((pkg))a bill inked by goverenor jerry brown today will give tenants more time to respond to eviction or breach of lease notices. the new law will allow tenants three court days to pay rent or comply with lease terms and five court days to respond to an eviction lawsuit. current law states tenants have calendar days, giving them less time to act. attorneys across the state have reported incidents involving landlords giving notice to tenants on a friday before a long weekend or holidayin a statement, bill author assembly member david chiu said "tenants in california are facing unprecedented hardships and constantly living under the threat of eviction. a few extra days can be the difference between staying in their home or becoming

in the last month. park goers i spoke to say they're shocked this has happened here. alameda police say there has been three attempted sexual assaults reported in the last month at the park.the first happened august sixth. then two other victims came forward this week saying they too were attacked and nearly sexually assaulted at the park.police say each victim described the man as in his early to mid 20's with a thin build, short curly hair, and height about five, five. people who walk here nearly everyday say they're disappointed because usually the park is... alameda police are working alongside the east bay regional park district police department on this case. even though the park prowler is still on the lose - people say they'll continue to come here.

(grant) also in the east bay... a man is arrested in connection to an attack and attempted kidnapping near the lafayette bart station. police just identified the suspect as 19-year-old jordan wilson of pittsburg. the incident happened just before 4:30 yesterday morning. police say a woman was walking to the bart station when two men wearing masks pulled up next to her. they tell us one of the suspects then grabbed the woman and tried to force her into their car, but she was able to break free and yell for help. police say they are still looking for two other people involved. alegdly assaulting their uber driver. according to police the man and woman who had been drinking.... requested an uber in sausalito around two am tuesday to take them back to their hotel in san francisco. the uber driver then tells police the woman began pulling the uber driver's hair and ears while she was driving. the uber driver pulled over, grabbed her purse and jumped out of the car. that is when the man jumped into the driver's seat and drove off in the uber driver's car. with the help of the sfpd the suspects were identified as 53 year old tyson pelanconi and 44 year old brenda carlier. both have been booked into the marin county jail. (vicki) it's been 11 months since the tubbs fire destroyed thousands of homes in the north bay. but since then... only one home in the fountain grove neighborhood has been rebuilt... and fewer than 200 homes are currently under construction. the rebuilding is moving slow, leading some people to just selling their properties. contractors say it could take five to ten years to finish

recalling more than 1 million of its hybrid vehicles worldwide over a potential fire risk. the automaker said today... the safety recall covers its prius, prius plug-in hybrid and c-hr suv models. the recall applies to cars produced between june 2015 and may 2018. just under 200,000 of the affected vehicles are in the united states toyota said the problem involved wire harnesses connecting to the cars' power control units. these can wear away over time, generating heat. (grant) if you have an i-phone eight and are having problems with it... listen up. apple is issuing a repair program to address a manufacturing defect in some of the devices. the company says the defect involves the phone's logic board, causing them to freeze or turn off. in some cases, the phone won't turn back on. the repair program is for i-phone eights sold between september 20-17 and march 20-18. apple says it will fix the problem for free. san francisco's millennium tower. isalready sinking and leaning and over the weekend, a large piece of exterior glass on the 36th floor cracked. sot aaron peskin/san francisco supervisor 09-16sot the interior window pane was taped and the sidewalk underneath was immediately shutdown, and should the exterior glass break free. but by wednesday afternoon, the full sidewalk had reopened. after inspecting the crack, a city building inspector determined there was no theat of falling glass. recovery team with the n-t-s-b picked up the wreckage of the small plane that crashed yesterday near the palo alto airport . that accident killed the volunteer pilot, and injured two passengers, including the patient who was being transported on a mission of mercy. kron 4's maureen kelly has new information about the victims ... and the investigation into what caused the crash. this is a photo of the pilot who died while trying to help others.the organization he was volunteering for, angel flight west, a non profit that provides free rides to patients and their families, has identified him as w. john spencer. spencer had donated 125 flights, helping 75 families since 2014.tuesday's plane crash happened as spencer was transporting a 16 year old patient identified by family as 16 year old chloe king and her mother nancy dellamaria. they took off from redding so the teenager could undergo surgery at stanford's lucille packard children hospital. but the plane went down in the water about about a quarter mile

american canyon are hospitalized-- after a robbery during their lunch hour. it happened as the students were walking off the american canyon high school campus for lunch. 4-5 students between 15 and 16-years-old were then approached by two suspects... and were told to get on the ground. the students were then robbed of their shoes, phones, and wallets. they ran back on campus-- which caused a short lockdown. police were later able to track down the suspects and took two people into custody. it's not clear how the teens were injured. the victims have non-life threatening injuries. zavala has more tonight on how the new law will help. a bill inked by goverenor jerry brown today will give tenants more time to respond to eviction or breach of lease notices. the new law will allow tenants three court days to pay rent or comply with lease terms and five court days to respond to an eviction lawsuit. current law states tenants have calendar days, giving them less time to act. attorneys across the state have reported incidents involving landlords giving notice to tenants on a friday before a long weekend or holidayin a statement, bill author assembly member david chiu said "tenants in california are facing unprecedented hardships and constantly living under the threat of eviction. a few extra days can be the difference between staying in their home or becoming homeless." the new law is one of several housing related bills passing through the governor's desk. it will take effect september of next year

hundreds of airline passengers had to be quarantined when they arrived in new york today after being sickened during a flight from the middle east. among them... rapper vanilla ice.... who tweeted this video from the tarmac. (ken) the rapper missed his connecting flight to florida because of the incident. (pam) but it was much worse for some of the other passengers ... many of whom had to be hospitalized. our grant lodes joins us now in the studio with more. the price tag to repair the oroville dam just keeps climbing...in february of 2017 - the spillway began to fracture in a near-disaster at the country's tallest dam.( ken causing major damaage and triggering evacuations... today, the california department of water resources had new estimateson the costs.. catherine heenan is here with the latest bad news... without question, there's a lot of optimism for this upcoming season in santa clara. not only have the 49ers found their franchise quarterback with jimmy garoppollo, but he also has yet to lose a start. however, we'll see how much of the hype is deserved when they open the season this sunday in minnesota. -- the 49ers...down to their last few practices before leaving for minneapolis. --kyle shanahan...aiming to capitalize on the success and hard work from last year all through training camp. --but the vikings represent a formidable test... last year, they went 13-and-3...won the nfc north...and made it all the way to the nfc championship game. --over the summer, they found their star qb...and signed former redskins qb kirk cousins to a record deal. --and the vikings weren't the only team in the mix for cousins. before trading for jimmy g, the niners were set to make a run at him in the offseason. --here's shanahan on the likelihood of that scenario unfolding. "we always knew that was a strong possibility because i didn't think they were going to franchise him

three years in a row like no one else did and i thought we'd have a very good chance. so, i think that's what we knew was a very strong possibility of happening and i think we fell into another alternative option that was pretty darn good." here's something 49ers fans can look forward to later this season-- terrell owens opted to not attend the hall of fame festivities earlier this summer in canton... however, he will show up at levi's stadium to receive a special hall of fame ring. "t.o." will be back in the bay area on november 1st....when the niners host the raiders.... the hall of fame ring of excellence ceremony is one of three elements bestowed on a hall of famer... the other two are the gold jacket and bronze bust. the raiders have an extra day of preparation for their season opener.. monday night against the rams there's a ton of familiarity between the two teams.

raiders fans know marcus peters and aqib talib very well, but also, gruden has deep knowledge of the l-a coaching staff. --so here's the back story... 32-year-old sean mcvay is the current coach of the rams and reigning coach of the year. --and gruden not only gave mcvay his first job in the league as a receivers coach in tampa, but he's also worked with mcvay's grandfather, former 49ers executive--john. --here's the raiders head coach explaining the dynamics.
