(grant) a big story tonight-- a trial date has been set for the ghost ship warehouse fire in oakland. derick almena and max harris will go to trial on april second. this comes a month after a judge rejected the plea deal the two men had reached with prosecutors. almena and harris were charged with 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter for that fire. at a hearing today... both men withdrew their "no contest" pleas-- and entered "not guilty" pleas. 36 people died during a party at the warehouse in december of 20-16. (grant) the trial against the alleged gypsy hill killer started today.. 69-year-old rodney halbower is accused of raping and killing six women - but this trial concentrates on two killed in san mateo county dating back to the 1970's. the judge did not allow the media to film the hearing, but kron 4's sara stinson was inside the courtroom.

trial beginning there was tons of drama the accused gypsy hill killer was almost kicked out before opening statements even began."> here is a recent mugshot of 69-year-old rodney halbower - the man accused of killing 17-year-old paula baxter in millbrae and veronica cascio in pacifica in 19-76.before the county started opening statements - halbower became disruptive saying he wanted to represent himself and that the evidence wasn't processed correctly. he began yelling and telling the jury this trial is an abuse of the legal process and

conspiracy. judge mark forcum asked halbower to be quiet dozens of times as three police officers surrounded him. within two minutes judge forcum excused the jury.the judge was about to kick halbower out of opening statements but deputy district attorney sean gallager told the judge it's important he stays to hear the argument of the county. the judge says about a week ago halbower tried to get excused from attending court - and he is intentionally disrupting to get out of the courtroom. attorney gallager said quote he made his bed let him lie in it.the judge decided to let halbower stay and brought the jury back in.he advised them to disregard anything he says until halbower is on the stand. gallager started to describe the brutal rapes and killings of both teenages, which happened within 30 days of one another and just ten miles apart.halborrow continued to yell saying that no one ever asked him 42 years ago if he had an allaby. the people continued and eventually halbower became quiet. until attorney gallager brought up the evidence found in 2014 that matched halbower and linked him to both gypsy hill killings. the defense also gave opening remarks - but halbower insisted that he wanted to represent himself. reporter tag: (catherine) a restaurant worker in san francisco was

shot and injured today - while taking out the trash. it happened around 3-am on the 21- hundred block of lombard street - near mel's diner. police say the gunman demanded money from the victim-- and shot him. by the time officers arrived - the gunman was gone...but he was tracked down later and arrested. the victim is hospitalized and is expectedto survive. (grant) a wildfire burning near redding will keep a stretch of i-5 closed through the weekend. the delta fire is burning on both sides of the freeway about 30 miles north of redding. so far-- the fire has burned more than 24-thousand acres and it continues to burn out of control tonight...there is no containment. fire officials say crews are facing very dangerous conditions. 280 homes are considered threatened, but the blaze isn't burning but the blaze isn't burning close to any large towns on sunday -- officials say they will re- evaluate whether or not to reopen i-5. unexpected exercise in southern syria on friday -- because of russian threats. russia has warned that its forces -- along with syrian regime units -- are prepared to attack an area where u.s. (grant) on the peninsula a woman is arrested for d- u-i... after driving her car into a home. it happened yesterday morning on monroe avenue in belmont. police say 42-year-old denise adams hit a parked car... and then backed up across the street down a driveway of another home.. and crashed into the front porch. it's not clear if anyone was inside at the time. adams was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. (grant) happening now... the world's largest militarized swat training and weapons expo is taking place in the east bay. this will be the last year of the expo... which attracts huge protests every year. kron 4's lydia pantazes reports from the alameda county fairgrounds in pleasanton. the alameda county sheriff's office is hosting its last "urban shield" first-responder training exercise in its current format this weekend. the sheriff's office launched urban shield in 2007, following the terrorist attack on sept. 11, 2001, which sheriff's officials said showed that law enforcement agencies weren't well prepared for such attacks. more than 100 agencies and thousands of people, including some from foreign countries, have participated in past conferences. but the alameda county board of supervisors voted 4-1 to end the training exercise in its current format at a meeting on march 27 at which the vast majority of more than 100 speakers alleged that it is militaristic, racist and xenophobic and has a negative impact on communities of color and immigrants. the board called for the exercise's format in 2019 and future years to focus more on training for natural disasters and less on terrorism and on weapons vendors. sheriff's officials say the purpose of the conference is to train law enforcement officers, firefighters and paramedics on how to respond to natural disasters as well as man-made disasters such as explosions and mass shootings. the sheriff's office will host a regional preparedness training seminar and vendor show at the alameda county fairgrounds at 4501 pleasanton ave. in pleasanton from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on friday. sheriff's officials say the vendor show will feature the latest equipment and technology for first

(ken) the two suspects in the ghost ship warehouse fire, formally withdrew their no contest pleas today. derick almena and max harris entered not guilty pleas again... after judge james cramer scheduled their trial to begin april second. this comes in response to the alameda county judge rejecting the plea deal the two men reached with prosecutors. almena and harris were charged with 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter for an oakland warehouse fire back in 2016. 36 people between the ages of 17 and 61 died during a music party at the warehouse. (ken) the trial against the alleged gypsy hill killer began just today and already... it has been eventful. within one minute of the trial starting... rodney halbower was almost kicked out for yelling and telling the jury the trial is an abuse of the legal process and a conspiracy.
