and rescue teams from across the u-s are preparing to help. here at home... there are 2 teams gearing up to help anyway that they can. kron 4's ali reid talked to those people and has the story. there's a search and recue team of 35 in hawaii right now ...they've been there since hurricane lane hit. and the team that needs to be sent to north carolina .... has to have those special ceritifcations.pkgright now, the federal government is tapping into all 28 search and rescue teams across the united states.we have people that are on their way there right now. less than a handful, that is. in addition to the ongoing wildfires, the menlo park team is still in hawaii.one of the big things we're waiting for is the hurricane in hawaii right now. how bad its gonna be. it's been a rainmaker. so in addition to the 50" from the previous hurricane, you know what's it gonna do?the water rescue team is stretched a bit thin. at the same time, there isn't enough time to

train and certify a new group to tackle hurricane florence in north carolina.you're talking about a month or more worth of training that is necessary for someone is necessary to go through the door with that type of configurationso now they'll play it by ear, before packing up 40 thousand pounds of equipment and heading cross country. all depending on how much damage olivia leaves behind in hawaii.at the end of the day, thats where the problem is right now. they have to complete the mission and that may mean them missing something else thats going on standupthe fire chief tells me there are a lot of men and women that want to go help in north carolina.unfortunately they can't take that chance. he's hoping this will motivate them to go get the certification necessary to be a part of reporting live from menlo park ... ali reid ... kron 4 news. san francisco can move forward with disciplinary proceedings against 9 police officers caught exchanging racist and homophobic text messages. the state supreme court unanimously rejected to an appeal by the officers. the inappropriate text messages emerged during a 20-12 federal corruption investigation of a former officer. but police department administrators weren't notified of the texts until a jury found that officer guilty in december 20- 14. ( robin ) a big story this morning... a gunman kills 5 people -- including his wife -- before turning the gun on himself... as a kern county sheriff's deputy closes in. the sheriff says the man first showed up at a bakersfield trucking business yesterday... with his wife. that's where he confronted a man before killing him. the gunman then killed his wife... and then a second man who had shown up at the business. the gunman then went to a home where he shot

and killed two more people. after that ... he hijacked a car with a woman and child inside.....they were able to escape. a deputy then pulled over the gunman... and confronted him. that's when the gunman shot himself in the chest. ( robin )bart stations are causing more controversy... this time it's billboards with messages allegedly linked to hate groups. the messages have been seen at two bart stations... and as kron4's haaziq madyun explains... bart says their hands are tied. (pkg)it is an electronic billboard in the montgomery bart station that simply reads...history matters. a statement that is generally accepted by most people. however the group responsible for the ad, the institute for historical review, is considered anti-semitic by organizations like the anti- defamation league and the southern poverty law center. denying the holocaust is among the reasons i-h-r has been labled anti-semitic but mark

the bay area... thieves smashing vehicle windows to steal what is inside ... but is there a way to stop yourself from becoming a victim? lisa guerrero gives us a first hand look at what tourists and resident in san francisco are facing. it's an issue all over the country: thieves smashing vehicle windows to steal anything left inside. they're called smash and grabs, and in san francisco, the problem has reached epidemic proportions, with car break-ins happening an average of every 17 minutes. inside edition's 17 minutes. inside edition's chief investigative correspondent lisa guerrero wanted to see first-hand how bad the thefts are, so she used a $250 speaker and a michael kors purse as bait to lure thieves to a car rigged with hidden cameras. what the would-be burglars didn't know was that guerrero and her team also hid gps tracking devices inside the speaker and the purse. guerrero then drove up and parked the bait car at the renowned alamo square in san francisco, where tourists flock to take pictures of the famous "painted ladies" row of victorian homes. it wasn't long before a couple of bonnie

( james ) san francisco's "early days" statue is coming down. the statue depicts a native american at the feet of a spanish cowboy and catholic missionary. activists say it's racist and demeaning to indigenous people. the san francisco board of appeals voted wednesday to remove the statue. ( james ) in the east bay... firefighters rescued an 82-year-old man after he fell about 80 feet down a hill. this happened on greenridge court in castro valley. firefighters tweeted out this video of the rescue. the man did ánot have any complaints of pain or injuries... but he was taken to the hospital as a precaution. suspected of robbing a roseville apple store have been busted. police responded to the theft in roseville on wednesday.. and then a chase followed. witnesses described the car the thieves took off in... and then a short time later a pursuit began. the theives go off interstate 80.. and then crashed into a big rig and another car waiting on the ramp. polcie say the thieves got out of the car and then ran into neighborhoods.. jumping fences. police say they are trying to connect these thieves with other apple store robberies in the area. morning... a gunman kills 5 people -- including his wife -- before turning the gun on himself... as a kern county sheriff's deputy closes in. the sheriff says the man first showed up at a bakersfield trucking business yesterday... with his wife. that's where he confronted a man and killed him. the gunman then killed his wife... and then he chased and killed a second man who witnessed the whole thing. the gunman then went to a home where he shot and killed two more people. after that ... he hijacked a car with a woman and child inside.....they were able to escape. a deputy then pulled over the gunman... and confronted him. that's when the gunman shot himself. 4's sara stinson is live in atherton with the details. i'm standing on middlefield road right in front of atherton high school - this is just one area san mateo sheriff's officials will have increased patrols this morning. deputies will be looking for drivers who are speeding, fail to stop for a stopped school bus, driving in the bike lane and for drivers who do not stop for people in cross walks or even cross the sidewalk line.the sheriff's office is hoping increased patrols will remind drivers to be extra cautious epsecially while driving in school zones.but pedestrains aren't off the hook either - they should also follow the rules of the road to ensure their own safety.a few tips ? never assume a driver sees you, look both ways before crossing, and while walking near moving traffic put the phone down. enforcement will be spread out from west menlo park to the unincorporated areas of san mateo county.this is the first operation of the school year -

a peelet gun in san jose. it happened near parkview elementary school. x-rays show pudder the cat with two led pellets in him and he may never be able to move his front paw again. neighbors say that someone else wrote on a neighborhood blog that their cat had been shot as well. ( darya ) teens might get a little more sleep during the week... áif governor brown signs a new bill sitting on his desk right now. the bill would push back the start time for schools across california. for decades -- some doctors, educators and politicans have argued that if school begins at 8-30... attendance, grades and graduation rates could improve.

( james ) three men suspected of robbing a roseville apple store have been busted. police responded to the theft in roseville on wednesday.. and then a chase followed. witnesses described the car the thieves took off in... and then a short time later a pursuit began. the theives go off interstate 80.. and then crashed into a big rig and another car waiting on the ramp. polcie say the thieves got out of the car and then ran into neighborhoods.. jumping fences. police say they are trying to connect these thieves with other apple store robberies in the area. and his family was zip-tied by the thieves. the sacramento sheriffús department released this surveillance from the man's home. it shows how the four men used rocks to break through the window. once inside... the homeowner says the men punched his wife before tying her up. they also tied up the man's sister and 5 children. the homeowner says the break-in has completely traumatized his children. transit center in san francisco is already showing signs of wear and teard.. the walkway that circles the 5-and-a- half acre rooftop garden is crumbling. small divets of loose gravel have appeared on high traffic spots of the walkway. the good news is -- it's under warranty and the contractor is working through a list of things to fix. the problem -- they don't know why the ground is crumbling.
