( marty ) good morning and thanks for joining us on the kron 4 news weekend. i'm marty gonzalez. that breaking news we are following.. hurricane florence has been downgraded to a tropical depression. the storm is being blamed for 13 deaths in north and south carolina. now the problem is flooding, and it could get worse over the next few days. omar jimenez joins us live from new bern, north carolina with the latest. omar. tropical depression florence is going nowhere.with winds of up to 35 miles per hour it's just dumping rain over the

same places in north and south carolina---the floodwaters chasing people out of their homes..homeowner evacuating: "i cried this morning i broke down and cried. at this point, i'm accepting it. it is what it is. we can't control it. just pick up and deal."and turning streets into rivers and trapping people in their cars. woman rescued: "the water keeps coming up and up like some titanic stuff. you can see the water coming up. so i'm just like boom-pushed the window out. and as i pushed the window out and tried to swim, the current just takes me down."people who live near the carolinas' rising rivers were ordered to evacuate by sunday afternoon."mandatory evacuations start tomorrow at 3pm."despite the warnings, some people are chosing to stay and ride it out.jason (homeowner), not evacuating:

rosa are investigating a deadly hit and run. it happened just before 9:30 last night near the intersection of stony point and occidental roads. police searched the area but could not find the car. now, they're looking at surveillance video. they describe the car as a small white sadan... possibly with a spoiler on the back. the car should have major front end damage. ( marty ) happening now... police are looking for three people who tried to break into a house in hillsborough. it happened on the 29-hundred block of churchill drive. the homeowners had been out. they arrived home and heard their alarm going off. then they saw three men run across the driveway and jump over a fence. they took off in a dark colored 2015 honda sedan with paper plates. police say they got into the house through an unlocked door. police are reviewing surveillance ( marty ) in the east bay... emeryville police have arrested a man accused of hitting a woman in the head with an axe. 33-year-old christopher jennings is now in custody. the incident

happened on near the intersection of 40th and hubbard streets. the woman is expected to be okay. ( marty ) another big story we are following this morning... thousands of marriott hotel employees could go on strike in the bay area and across the country. the workers are in the middle of stalled contract negotiations. kron 4's ella sogomonian explains how this could impact bay area hotels. bull horns and pickett signs are stacking up in the office of union here local 2 that's representing 2500 marriott employees across san francisco who are ready to strike...they voted this week to do so for the first time...saying the international business is more than capable of raising their wages so they can afford to live and work in the bay area. sot: anand singh, president united here local 2// "youre talking about a 9 billions dollar industry the tourism industry in san francisco and it's done quite well over the years but the wealth that it's been generated hasn't accrued to the workers that drive this industry and marriott as the industry leader needs to step up and make sure that one job is enough for workers to live and work in this city."on top of more pay union here local 2 are fighting for workplace safety, noting alleged sexual assault reports from housekeepers...and to do away

with the greechoice program which they say has added more strenuous labor.the program is promoted by marriott as a means to help the environment and cut back on cleaning and laundry per guest, but hotel maids say they end up using more water, chemicals, and are putting in more work at the end of a stay to catch up. marriott international releaesed a statement saying "through many years of working with unite here, we have always taken the negotiation process seriously and reached agreements. we have no reason to believe that this negotiation process will be any different. we respect the right of our associates to voice their opinions on issues that are important to them. should the union and our employees choose to strike, our hotels will continue to operate and work to minimize any disruption and to provide the excellent service that our guest have come to expect."- marriott international ( marty ) coming up ( marty )( marty ) coming up on kron 4 news

( marty ) young people in san jose are carrying the least amount of debt in the nation. the company lending tree says the median debt for millennials in san jose is 18-thousand 376 dollars student loans and auto loans make up the most debt for millennials. ( marty ) amazon plans to sell and ship fresh, full-size christmas trees this year. they are douglas firs and norfolk island pines and they will be sent within 10 days of being cut. amazon said the trees, wreaths and garlands will go on sale in november. ( marty ) facebook will begin fact-checking photographs and videos posted on the social media platform. the company said it will use technology and human reviewers to try to staunch what it called misinformation. some of the doctored photos and videos in the past two years were shared hundreds of thousands of times. "project by project" hosted it's annual fundraiser. all the proceeds go to a bay area non profit which serves low income refugees and immigrants. kron 4's gayle ong was at the event. it's the 9th annual plate by plate tasting benefit..hosted by the san francisco chapter of project by project - every year the organization brings out top chefs, mixologists and restaurants from across the bay area.the goal is to increase awareness and raise money for organizations within the asian american community. tonight's theme is immigration - organizers say the timing is on point with the policy changes..and ongoing anti immigrant sentiments..

( marty ) in national news... a u-s border patrol agent in texas is under arrest in the killings of four people... and kidnapping of a woman. 35 year old juan ortiz is charged with five felonies. he is a 10-year veteran supervisor with u-s border patrol. over the past two weeks, authorities found the bodies of three women and one man. the district attorney says all of the victims were prostitutes. authorities call ortiz a serial killer who hunted for his victims. the break came in the case came on friday after a woman said she had been kidnapped and escaped. her description led state troopers to ortiz. they caught him at a motel. investigators say

of things and matthew stafford on the other. jimmy g is going against a lions pass defense that was bottom five in the nfl last year. a defense that got left in the dust last weekend against rookie quarterback sam darnold and the jets. as for the raiders. they will go up against the denver broncos tomorrow afternoon. they've got something to prove as well. last week the raiders lost 33 to 13 after being tied with the rams in the third quarter. yes, i'd say the fourth quarter didn't go so well. derek carr needs to find amari cooper in this game. the star receiver had just nine yards in the season opener. the broncos beat the seahawks last week and this is a tough matchup against the division rival broncos. and that is sports.

following this morning... the body of a u-c berkeley law student has been found in oregon. this is a picture of the recovery effort. 23-year-old brian lewinstein fell from the top of a waterfall back on august 12th. police say he crossed a safety fence to take a picture of the falls. the body was found on thursday but it was not positively identified until this weekend. ( marty ) new this morning... the city of martinez is warning people about safety issues at the city's temporary dog park next to the john muir amphithater. the city says that a dog was recently attacked by other dogs at the park. the dog that was attacked is expected to be okay, but the city is reminding people that they are responsible for their dog's actions and violent dogs must be removed from the park. ( marty ) happening now... police in brentwood are looking for a driver after one person was injured in a hit-and-run crash. it

happened on the 38-hundred block of balfour road across from veterans park. a car pulling out of the park... crashed head-on with a car heading west on balfour. the driver of the car pulling out of the park... took off running after the accident. the driver of the other car was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay. ( marty )homelessness is an issue across the country -- and especially here in san francisco. a local non profit is working to bridge e gap between the city's "housed" and "unhoused" through an art installation in hayes valley. kron4's michelle kingston has the story. ehb teng, formerly homeless "you go to school, you wait until school is done to use the showers, the bathrooms in the locker room, then i'd hike to the 24 hour diner to finish my homework and study and then eat off of people's leftovers, sometimes i would dumpster dive."ehb teng's experience with homelessness as a teen is just one of many you'll hear at lava mae's art installation in hayes valley.the non profit is working to disrupt the way communities see and serve

awarded for her advocacy in the me too movement. she receiveed this award for publically supporting the l-g-b-t-q community... and raising awarness for hiv and aids. ( marty )investigators are still trying to sort out why a man went on a deadly rampage in bakersfield. killing his ex-wife and four others before turning the gun on himself. olivia lavoice reports. javier casarez and petra bolanos were married for over 28 years when he filed for divorce in december.there was no arguing over assets or children, no attorneys were involved.javier told the court he and his then wife petra had worked out child custody and alimony on their own.the marriage was dissolved by the court in june.this was around the time that according to court documents-javier kicked petra out of their home and

cut her off financially.court documents say this is what pushed petra to ask a family member for help with translating the divorce proceedings, as she said she couldn't read english.it seems that's when it clicked-petra realized her husband had left her with nothing: no child or spousal support, and no property.so on august 31st, after saving up money to get legal help, she filed a motion begging the judge to give her the chance to oppose the divorce proceedings,even though their divorce was already finalized.she said javier had never told her about their prior hearing and that he intercepted her mail. she said that's why she didn't oppose earlier rulings. petra said despite what javier filed with the court- she does needs child support, spousal support, and full ownership of the family home- requesting that javier move out, so she and their young daughter can move back in. in her own words petra said quote, please do not punish me for my ignorance. she spoke of fighting for the chance for justice on behalf of her minor children, herself, and the opportunity for a chance to respond. it seemed petra's request was granted, as a court hearing was set for october 11th to take the matter up in front of the judge. the paperwork regarding the new hearing was mailed out to javier on tuesday september 4th. the following wednesday, he murdered petra and four others.

automatic must-dos.. but that doesn't mean they aren't there.. it just means that new zealand good at keeping secrets. there are two main islands: the north island and the south island. today, we going to talk about the south island. i was onboard the noordam, a holland america line cruise ship, and this was my first glimpse of new zealand. this is fiordland national park, a unesco world heritage site. we spent an entire day, sailing our way through three different sounds: milford sound, doubtful sound, and dusky sound. it's the type of day where you just keep turning your head, never quite sure which way to look. i had just sat down to eat lunch, only to jump up and go running because an amazing rainbow seemed to appear out of nowhere. new zealand easily lends itself to cruising itineraries, and for the most part, we arrived in a new spot every day, with each location offering something a little different. waters in

port chalmers are loaded with new zealand fur seals, and the skies above are popular with a number of oceanic birds. in less than an hour my guide with monarch wildlife cruises was able to point out four species of albatross. back on solid ground, port chalmers downtown is mere blocks, but worth exploring. also easy to walk and explore is the tiny town of akaroa (ack-ah- row-ah). a former french settlement, it still has that french charm. its street names are french, and about 700 people call it home. it has a nice beach that sits just off the main drag that's lined with restaurants and shops. akaroa is also home to a unique spot called the giant's house. the owner is an artist named josie martin, and she's created the terraced gardens and all of the mosaic sculptures that surround the property. there's something whimsical and colorful at every turn that just makes you smile. about a 10-minute walk from the center of town, the house is also a bed and breakfast if you're lucky enough to be staying in town for a while. new zealand also has some stretches that just might remind you a little bit of home. marlborough wine country is one of marlborough

( marty ) a big story we are following this morning... the body of a u-c berkeley law student has been found in oregon. this is a picture of the recovery effort. 23-year-old brian lewinstein fell from the top of a waterfall back on august 12th. police say he crossed a safety fence to take a picture of the falls. the body was found on thursday but it was not positively identified until this weekend. ( marty ) new this morning... the city of martinez is warning people about safety issues at the city's temporary dog park next to the john muir amphithater.

reports. javier casarez and petra bolanos were maied for over 28 years when he filed for divorce in december.there was no arguing over assets or children, no attorneys were involved.javier told the court he and his then wife petra had worked out child custody and alimony on their own.the marriage was dissolved by the court in june.this was around the time that according to court documents-javier kicked petra out of their home and cut her off financially.court documents say this is what pushed petra to ask a family member for help with translating the divorce proceedings, as she said she couldn't read english.it seems that's when it clicked-petra realized her husband had left her with nothing: no child or spousal support, and no property.so on august 31st, after saving up money to get legal help, she filed a motion begging the judge to give her the chance to oppose the divorce proceedings,even

from steep cliffs and stunning coastline, to famous wine regions, new zealand offers a colorful variety of surprises. travel enthusiast dana rebmann joins us now. new zealand doesn't get the credit it deserves. as a vacation destination, most folks don't have pre-conceived notions about any big ticket items, or automatic must-dos.. but that doesn't mean they aren't there.. it just means that new zealand good at keeping secrets. there are two main islands: the north island and the south island. today, we going to talk about the south island. i was onboard the south island. i was onboard the noordam, a holland america line cruise ship, and this was my first glimpse of new zealand. this is fiordland national park, a unesco world heritage site. we spent an entire day, sailing our way through three

different sounds: milford sound, doubtful sound, and dusky sound. it's the type of day where you just keep turning your head, never quite sure which way to look. i had just sat down to eat lunch, only to jump up and go running because an amazing rainbow seemed to appear out of nowhere. new zealand easily lends itself to cruising itineraries, and for the most part, we arrived in a new spot every day, with each location offering something a little different. waters in port chalmers are loaded with new zealand fur seals, and the

skies above are popular with a number of oceanic birds. in less than an hour my guide with monarch wildlife cruises was able to point out four species of albatross. back on solid ground, port chalmers downtown is mere blocks, but worth exploring. also easy to walk and explore is the tiny town of akaroa (ack-ah- row-ah). a former french settlement, it still has that french charm. its street names are french, and about 700 people call it home. it has a nice beach that sits just off the main drag that's lined with restaurants and shops. akaroa is also home to

a unique spot called the giant's house. the owner is an artist named josie martin, and she's created the terraced gardens and all of the mosaic sculptures that surround the property. there's something whimsical and colorful at every turn that just makes you smile. about a 10-minute walk from the center of town, the house is also a bed and breakfast if you're lucky enough to be staying in town for a while. new zealand also has some stretches that just might remind you a little bit of home. marlborough wine country is one of new zealand's best-known wine regions. home to dozens of
