park -- where...as kron four's philippe djegal reports... the suspect was taken into custody. (philippe) a 25-year-old woman tells the rohnert park department of public safety that when she stopped by this apartment on joanne court late wednesday night... she intended only to pick-up some school books she loaned to a 25-year-old acquaintance of hers -- sergio heredia- trujillo. instead, she says heredia-trujillo threatened her with a knife, pulled her pants down and ripped off her underwear... before attempting to rape her. no name/neighbor- "i'm not used to this and so it was scary because everybody was alseep." the victim called 9-1-1 more than five hours after the ordeal started... she was able to escape the apartment after alledging heredia-trujillo also bit and choked her... telling her to stay quiet, or else he'd kill her. the woman tells investigators she knocked on her neighbor's doors for help but no one initially answered... until someone finally let her in to call police.pujjal khanal/neighbor- "it's very unfortunate what happened." not everyone heard the woman's pleas for help.no name/neighbor- "i'm a light sleeper, and i didn't hear any noise at all before that. before the police and all that. i didn't hear any noises -- i didn't hear anything. anything out of the ordinary." the d-p-s says heredia-trujillo lives here, but is not on the lease. a neighbor says he was arrested

in the grass outside the apartment. police later discovered six cars in the area with smashed windows... and, broken glass in heredia- trujillio's pockets. the d-p-s believes he was intoxicated and under the influence of alcohol at the time.no name/neighbor- "in that situation, i wouldn't come to this situation, go up with a person that you don't really know. or, even if you know, if you know that person, and you know that can be trouble, you wouldn't go." heredia-trujillo is being held at the sonoma county jail. his bail set at 50-thousand dollars. he was booked on a list of charges... including assault with intent to commit rape, assault with a deadly weapon... kidnapping, false imprisonment and sexual battery. in rohnert park, philippe djegal, kron four news.

(grant) new at 5... more arrests in the apple store "snatch-and-grab" crime ring. we're learning 2 more people are now in custody. we're also getting our first look at some of the people accused of stealing one-million dollars worth of apple products. kron4's ryan o'donnell joins us with more on who these guys are. (ryan) here they are... 10 of the 17 suspects... and all facing numeus theft charges tonight. the youngest... only 18-years old... while the oldest in the group... is 23. these suspects have been booked into the alameda county jail. here's the video we've been showing... of multiple apple store robberies. the suspects all with hoodies on... grabbing the apple products and taking-off. police are calling these crimes... organized retail thefts... that spanned 19 counties, including thefts in santa rosa, emeryville, and corte madera over the last month. one other person was arrested as well... and is being held in sonoma county.

(ryan) police say they're not done yet... they've got warrants out for 6 other suspected thieves in this criminal ring. (vicki) today facebook said information belonging to nearly 50 million users was exposed in an attack discovered earlier this week. the breach exploited facebook's "view-as" feature, which lets user's view their page the way other users would see it. exploiting the feature gave attackers the ability to potentially take control of the accounts. facebook said it doesn't know who or where the attackers were based. according to the company, the issue has been fixed and reported to the f-b-i. the "view as" feature has been turned off as the company investigates. it's not clear yet if exposed user information was actually accessed. the attack may have begun as early as september 16th. (grant)construction of a temporary fix to the salesforce transit center could begin as early as tomorrow(vicki)as you know earlier this week cracks were discovered in two support

beams forciing the shutdown of the brand new transit center. kron 4's dan kerman has been following the story. he joins us from the transit center with the latest.

"we had a car accident hte other day on blacow, and that knocked out the power. we have x students attending here. we had to knock out the power to

the health department for the second time in three months. (grant) kron4'smaureen kelly reports this time the issue was a bunch of cock-roaches.. here's one of the cockroaches found by heath inspectors

inside the china wall buffet on tuesday....as you can see it's very much alive.....here's the report that details their findings.....the inspection was triggered by a complaint by a customer dining at the all you can eat establishment claiming that a dead cockroach was found on a shrimp...and a dead bug was found on an oyster.inspectors went in and took these pictures....the report stating they found over 50 insects alive and dead inside food containers ....and 20 live cockroaches were discovered above the food preperation sink.... these findings caused the restarant to be closed temporarily.... when you have vermin in a restaurant that would be mice rats flies are cockroaches does your critters that carry disease organisms. in fact cockroaches for example they've isolated 32 different species of bacteria on cockroaches.the county's environmental health department says this same restaurant was shut down in june for not maintaining food at the proper tempature. with two closers in three months that definitely warrants in enhanced enforcement actiona man who identified himself as the owner declined to comment.... athough a woman who opened the door said that the restaurant was very clean...a health inspector who came back for a follow up inspection this afternoon agreed...and is allowing the restaurant to reopen.because the resturant was closed twice in three months....the owner

will also have to attend an adminstrative hearing with the health department. a hearing agreement with specific expectations will be set for the restaurant. if the owner fails to meet those requirements - the resturant can face suspension of its operating permit.maureen kelly kron4 news. (grant) a six hour swat standoff closed a gas station in san jose today and left employees on edge. it started around 9-30 last night at the valero gas station on meridan avenue. police say employees self evacuated after a man began to threaten them and cause a disturbance. when officers arrived... the man refused to leave and barricaded himself inside.

it wasn't until about three this morning when the man finally surrendered. police took him into custody. no one was hurt. (vicki) a morgan hill high school football team is forced to start the season away from home after the field was vandalized. kron 4's sara stinson shows us the damage to the field and the school. the morgan hill school district superintendent steve betando says earlier this week crews left the field open overnight so portable stands could be brought in, but vandals took advantage.tire marks show they did several donuts on the field.betando says crews filled most of the deep ruts, but they decided to move the game due to safety concerns.now the team and band will play at live oak high school on saturday- which is about ten minutes away.meanwhile the district continues to work with police to identify the people responsible.

he died yesterday in tampa florida on the way to the hospital. no word on the cause of death. balin was part of the 1960s "san francisco sound",,, both as founder and lead singer of the airplane and co-owner of the club where the airplane and other bay area bands performed. (grant) bart officials voted last night to add 10 new inspectors ... to catch people not paying their fares. kron 4's lydia pantazes reports. soon you'll be see ing more fare inspectors on bart.those are the people that check your ticket to make sure you paid to ride bart.the bart board of directors voted 7-2 to hire 10 additional fare inspectors and expand the teams to nights and weekends. a bart spokesmen says fare inspectors increase police presence on-board trains and platforms, deter fare evasion, encourage compliance over time, and help send a message of customer equity.bart currently has six fare inspectors who work during the day on weekdays.in january, bart police started enforcing a new proof of payment ordinance allowing fare inspectors to check for valid fare inside the bart system. since march, 3,813 citations have been issued.the new officers will start working in the beginning of 2019.fare citations are civil with a fine of $55 for juveniles and $75 for adults.

partnership of the east bay has been awarded a three and a half million dollar grant... from the national science foundation. the money will be used to study and create a professional learning model for third through fifth grade science teachers. since it began in 2008... the east bay partnership has reached 730 teachers and more than 184-thousand california students....it is a collaborative effort between cal state east bay and the alameda county office of education. (grant) in the north bay tonight...two men are behind bars... a witness reported seeing them trying to break into a post office mail drop box... and then called the petaluma police. during the arrest a search of the car found suspects, who are identified as mark ganzon and christopher lopez... had multiple packages and pieces of mail addressed to north bay residents. police say they were able to return the

packages to original desitnations. (vicki) the city of belmont is looking into an ordiance to regulate kids access to flavored tobacco products. after hearing from a number of concerned residents at their meeting this week the city council formed a sub-committee to research the use of e- cigarettes by young people in the city. according to the surgeon general there has been a 900-percent increase in e-cigarette use among teens from 20-11 to 2016. (vicki) in the south bay.... sunnyvale will hold its first ever gun buy-back event on saturday. the buy-back starts at 8 a-m at the sunnyvale presbyterian church.... and lasts until noon. anyone who turnin a gun will not be asked any questions... and will receive between 100 to 400 dollars for each gun. there's no limit on how many you can turn in. if plan on participating all guns must be unloaded... and stored in the trunk of your car. the event is first-come, first-served. tonight... a new study shows, there might be a way to prevent alzheimers before you become an adult.(grant) it involves results from certain tests done as a kid. kron4's ryan o'donnell explains what this study found. (ryan) we're we're talking about a test that was done almost 60 years ago...

and at the time... had nothing to do with researching alzheimers. in fact, they were trying to find some of the brightest kids to help in the space race. so, they were testing their cognitive skills. taking a look at the same people's medical records almost 60 years later, pt-med researchers found men who scored lower in mechanical reasoning and women who scored lower in memory for words, both had higher odds of having developed alzheimer types of diseases. out of 85- thousand people studied, 2-point-9 percent of the men and 3-point-3 percent of the women had developed alzheimer's or related diseases.researchers hope, by identifying certain cognitive indicators during adolescence, they can help identify at-risk groups, and start early prevention or intervention treatment. chaos on capitol hill -- one day after emotional testimony .. the senate judiciary committee voting to send supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh's nomination to the floor for a full senate vote. from senator jeff flake came with a last-minute stipulation - and plenty of drama.sen. jeff flake, (r) arizona: "i think it would be proper to delay the floor vote for up to but not more than one week in order to let the fbi continue to do an investigation."even members of the judiciary committee seemed confusedvoice of sen. chuck grassley: "we had to get this done by 2 o'clock."voice of sen. dianne feinstein: "well is it done? is flake's thing gonna happen?" flake apparently feeling the pressure when earlier, after announcing he would vote yes in committee.... protestor: "what you are doing is allowing someone who actually violated a woman to sit on the supreme court!"sexual assault survivors confronted him in a senate elevator after learning about his decisionprotestor: "don't look away from me! look at me and tell me that it doesn't matter what happened to me! // look at me when i'm talking to you! you're telling me that my assault doesn't matter!"in addition to flake, all eyes will be on two female republican senators - susan collins, and lisa murkowski-- considered swing votesboth-- still undecided.even if collins and murkowski vote against kavanaugh-- he could still be confirmed-- with just a yes vote from a red-state democrat - like joe manchin of west virginia or heidi heitkamp of north dakota. in washington, i'm kristen holmes.

with senator jeff flake's demand.... president trump has directed the f-b-i to investigate the allegations against kavanaugh. the president says the investigation must be limited in scope.. and must be completed in less than a week. kavanaugh says he will continue to cooperate with the f-b-i. crews could begin work on a temporary fix to shore up the salesforce transit center .... as early as tomorrow. as you know, earlier this week, cracks were discovered in two support beams.... forcing the shutdown of the brand new center. kron 4's dan kerman has been following the story... and reports from

the transit center with the latest. dk transit center friday 092818 6 looklive pkgstandup dan kerman/sf 00-10san francisco's brand new salesforce transit center remained shutdown friday, as repair crews did more prep work for a temporary fix. this weeks discovery of two cracked support beams means the area above fremont street will have to be shored upsot dennis turchon/transit center construction mgr 27-37 the temporary fix will see a massive steel support beam rise from the center of fremont street to the bus deck above, taking the stress off the cracked beams.sotrepair crews have also been inspecting and testing other beams throughout the transit center and so far have found no other cracks. if that continues to be the case the hope is to reopen fremont street and the bus deck once the shoring is in place. standup dan kerman/sf 121-131 std/140

(catherine) another big story tonight. we're now learning that two more people are in custody... following arrests in the apple store "snatch-and-grab" crime ring. (pam) we are also getting our first look at those who are accused of stealing more than a-million dollars worth of apple products. joining us now in studio is grant

(grant) you can see here..... 10 of the 17 suspects... all facing numerous theft charges tonight. the youngest... only 18-years old... while the oldest in the group... is 23. theyv'e been booked into the alameda county jail. here's the video we've been showing... of multiple apple store robberies. the suspects ... grabbing the i- phones and i-pads.... and taking-off. police are calling these crimes... organized retail thefts... that spanned 19 counties, including thefts in santa rosa, emeryville, and corte madera over the last month. one other person was arrested as well... and is being held in sonoma county.(grant) police say they're not done yet... they've got warrants out for 6 other suspected thieves in this criminal ring. (catherine) a woman in the

north bay says she was held captive in an apartment -- and narrowly escaped her attacker... she says a man threatened her with a knife and tried to rape her.( pam) the terrifying encounter happened in rohnert park -- where kron four's philippe djegal reports, the suspect was taken into custody. (philippe) busted car windows on joanne court in rohnert park, tied to a man accused of attempting to rape a woman in a nearby apartment. pujjal khanal/neighbor- "this is like a very safe neighborhood. um, so yeah, its uh, we're pretty perplexed early in the morning." a 25-year-old woman tells the rohnert park department of public safety that 25-year-old sergio heredia-trujillo bit and choked her late wednesday night, after pulling her pants down, ripping her underwear off and threatening her with a knife. the woman alleges the attack happened inside this apartment where heredia- trujillo lives, though investigators say he is not on the lease. the victim described heredia-trujillo as an acquiantance... she says she stopped by to pick up some school books she let him borrow... and, instead was held captive before escaping five hours later, knocking on neighbors' doors before one let her in to call the police.

no name/neighbor- "i would just scream as loud as a i can and kick him and do whatever i need to get out." after heredia-trujillo was taken into custody... the department of public safety says they found six cars in the area with their windows smashed... and, some of the broken glass in heredia- trujillo's pockets. they say that he was intoxicated at the time... and, possibly under the influence of alcohol. no name/neighbor- "they had their guns out, pointed at him, and my window's just next to it, so i was really scared." heredia-trujillo was booked into the sonoma county jail where his bail is set at 50-thousand dollars. among the charges he faces are assault with intent to commit rape, false imprisonment and sexual battery. in rohnert park, philippe djegal, kron four news. (catherine) in the east bay... going to school for enlightenment... but being left in the dark. it's happening to students at irvington high school in

fremont. a power outage is just one of the unique challenges facing students this week... kron4's terisa estacio has more on what's going on. terisa? information for nearly 50- million facebook users has been exposed...after the network says it was hacked. (pam) facebook says.... it discovered the breach this week. kron4's ryan o'donnell joins us now with what this means for people on facebook. if you were on facebook this morning... you might have noticed the network kicked you out and you had to log back in. you and 90-million other users. facebook says the attackers exploited a feature in its code that allowed them to take over user accounts.

they say the attackers appeared to be after people's name, gender and hometowns. facebook says, at this point, it appears, no credit card information was taken. if you'd like to see if you account was accessed by somebody other than you... go to your account's security and login page... and see where your page has been logged-in at.facebook says it has fixed the issue and law enforcement is investigating. infestation causes the contra costa health department to temporarily shutdown a concord restaurant. kron4's maureen kelly reports, this is the second time... in three- months the establishment has been closed down. here's one of the cockroaches found by heath inspectors inside the china wall buffet on tuesday....as you can see it's very much alive.....here's the report that details their findings.....the inspection was triggered by a complaint by a customer dining at the all you can eat establishment claiming dead bugs were found in their food.inspectors went in and took these pictures....the report stating they found over 50 insects alive and dead inside food containers ....and 20 live cockroaches were discovered above the food preperation sink.... these findings caused the restarant to be closed temporarily.... the challenge of this place as it is a large establishment and it was a pretty bad infestation. they did in according to their own communication to us got the pest control guy out there working 24 seventhe county's environmental health department says this same restaurant was shut down in june for not maintaining food at the proper tempature.a man

who identified himself as the owner declined to comment.... athough a woman who opened the door said that the restaurant was very clean...a health inspector who came back for a follow up inspection this afternoon agreed...and is allowing the restaurant to reopen.there are places that get closed for infestations and from then on they operate great, they understand the problem they take preventative steps and these types of investigations are always preventablebecause the resturant was closed twice in three months....the owner will also have to attend an adminstrative hearing with the health department. a hearing agreement with specific expectations will be set for the restaurant. if the owner fails to meet those requirements - the resturant can face suspension of its operating permit.maureen kelly kron4 news.

says he happened to be in the right place, at the right time. sgt. wayne dice, nevada highway patrol: "he has a mom and dad, he's probably got a brother and sister. i'm just glad i was able to help him out. he might be going through a bad phase in his life, but i'm glad i was there to help him." sheriff's department found and destroyed more than five - thousand marijuana plants... worth more than two- point- five million dollars.. it happened during a two day raid this week. the plants were confiscated from illegal cultivation sites in santa barbara county.. no suspects have been arrested, however, deputies did find a sick puppy which is currently being cared for by county animal services. (catherine) there's new evidence that parts of the bay area are actually sinking.

after the break... we'll hear from an expert about how this is more than just a san francisco problem.

(pam) it is a troubling consideration but in light of the sinking problems plaguing the area which supports the millineum tower and 25 - jessie street ... it appears other sections of the bay area .. could be sinking as well.

(catherine) it's the last thing residents want to hear...but it's what a new study is telling us.. kron4's ryan o'donnell joins us with more.. it's two fold... the study und there are parts of the bay area that are sinking... while the water is rising. the areas of land we're talking about are the "man- made" spots. parts of cities built on landfills or newer mud... like treasure island, foster city, union city, and the land surrounding san francisco airport. satelite images were used to map-out the land loss. add-in future land loss and rising sea levels... and roland burgmann and the rest of his research team worry about major flooding problems. roland burgmann / uc berkeley geophysicist: these are such low lying areas that sinking together with rising sea levels put those areas in harms way and so we projected the degree of flooding, the areas of flooding that we would expect in the next decades and by the end of the century likely to be underwater unless we do something about it." 0:26 burgmann says land loss

and rising water should always be cosidered for planners wanting to build along the coastal areas... espcially those built-up by landfill. he says they plan on continuing to monitor land loss and rising sea levels to get an even more precise measurement. (catherine) crews have started drilling holes into shasta dam... to determine if it can hold an extra 18 feet of concrete. federal authorities have been studying the effects of raising the dam since the 19-80's. the dam is in rural northern california and forms shasta lake -- the state's biggest water storage reservoir. construction is scheduled to start in decemeber... a 20-million dollar price tag will be paid through a bill approved by congress earlier this year.. coming up in sports,
