in sports we'll take a look at the 49ers and raiders as they prepare for week 5 of the n-f-l season... both hoping for win number two... and bob melvin talks about his strategy of going "all bullpen" against the yankees last night... specifically his use of all-star closer blake treinean ... mark has that story... coming up
6:53 pm
(pam) time now for a look at sports.(ken) mark carpenter joins us in the studio. it took a few years for the a's to get back to the postseason... and unfortunately, their time in the playoffs, lasted only nine innings after falling apart in the bronx. --basically, the green and gold...were unrecognizable. the hard hitting club..that ranked near the top of the league...held to only 5 hits, 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. --also, the team that got to the playoffs behind its bullpen...couldn't count on its relievers.... liam hendriks was chased after 1....
6:54 pm
bob melvin called up 3 more arms before putting blake treinen on the mound in the 6th. that's when the yankees exploded... put up 4-runs in the frame. --melvin on his decision to turn to his closer so early. as far as treinen goes, we just got to get our best in there at that time. they knew everything was kind of up for grabs depending on what the situation of the game was...so..the point of the game we're trying to cut it off. you know offensively, we have to put a little more pressure on em so we're not in that spot where you have to bring in treinen in that situation. now to some playoff baseball from today-- rockies-brewers in milwaukee for game 1 of the nlds. --rockies were down 2-zip, but tied it in the 9th to force extras. in the 10th, mike moustakas...ended the night... runners on the corners.. 2-out.. a walkoff rope to right. brew crew takes game 1, 3-2. time to talk some nfl-- when the 49ers signed richard sherman, they knew they were getting not only an excellent defender, but someone who's not afraid to make his opinions known.
6:55 pm
the star cornerback...back at practice today after missing last week's game with a calf injury. his status going forward is unknown, but that's not the big talking point today... as he offered some great insight on the new league roughing penalties that protect offensive players, allow for increased stats, and make life tough for defenders. the average quarterback, their passer rating is like 92 and that used to be hall of fame numbers but now you know..it's not hall of fame numbers, it's just the average quarterback. you can't touch em, you can't tackle em, you can't hit em high, you can't hit em low. you can't knock em down to the ground hard, if you push him too bad, you know all that's a penalty...you can't hit a receiver high, you can't hit a receiver low, you can't push em you can..barely press em you know. it's making on teams to combat them.
6:56 pm
3-keys for the 49ers hosting the cardinals this sunday...-- crucial to get cj beathard going early...the faster he gets into a rhythm, the more comfortable he'll be down the stretch.--the defense...needs to go after the rookie running the offense...as josh rosen is only making his 2nd career start.--and finally, it's pivotal to not give arizona any freebies...late interceptions made a huge difference last week. those are your mercedes keys to the game. back in alameda-- marshawn lynch returned to practice today...after missing yesterday's session with a shoulder injury. the raiders visiting the chargers this sunday...and we'll see if beast mode continues to turn back the clock to his seattle days. despite the team's record, lynch has been one of the most productive backs in the league...top 5 in rushing yards. jon gruden...on the beast in the backfield. "i think he's a hall of fame back without a doubt. he can catch it. he can run it. he plays with passion. practices with passion. he's a great player.""guys tackling him have to know that they may hit him good once, but you're going to have to do it again in second and third quarter about 30 times. marshawn is going to try and outlast people. i think that's what makes him special."
6:57 pm
finally, warriors bringing the nba back to seattle tomorrow. a special preseason game that carries significance for kevin durant... who was drafted by the sonics in 2007. steve kerr..knows this means a ton for kd. i think the shoes tell the story..you know..he's got a strong connection with seattle, having played there for a year and being drafted by that organization..i think he's going to get a huge ovation so in my mind tomorrow night's game is going to be really impactful. definitely it's about the sonics and the history of the league in seattle. that wraps up kron4 news at 6. we'll see you tonight at 8.... on your bay area's local news station.
