good morning and good ( lydia ) good morning and thsanks for joining us on the kron 4 morning news. i'm lydia pantazes. that breaking news we are following... clean up will begin in florida after part of that state was devastated by hurricane michael. the storm has now been downgraded to a tropical storm as it moves through georgia and the carolinas. omar jimenez is live in panama city, florida with the latest. "i still can't believe it." people in the florida panhandle are taking in the toll of hurricane michael's wrath."it's a lot of loss. i mean thank goodness everyone else is safe this is horrible" florida took a direct hit wednesday by the historic

with relief efforts in the southeast. two people from the team in the south bay are headed to pensacola florida this morning. the team is on standby to send even more people to other areas affected by hurricane michael. they've put together kits including clothing, food, and other items for rescuers.

cambrian (came-bre-an) district. police belive he is also responsible for breaking a window and starting a fire at the same location within the last three months. the owner of the dental clinic believes she is being targeted for being a muslim. ( lydia ) fire investigators are looking into what started the fire at a warehouse in oakland. we first brought you this story as breaking news yesterday on the kron 4 morning news. it happened very close to the bart coliseum station. as kron 4s justine waldman reports -- the damage to the property could mean a set-back for an affordable housing complex. the flames captured by kron 4 viewers who sent us videos of the warehouse burning on 72nd and hawley street.smoke filling the sky right by the oakland coliseum bart station. sot our first thought was oakland warehouse so glad no loss of life no injurythe coo of resources for community development tells me the non-profit owns the paint storage warehouse.it is in the process of turning the site ino 59 affordable housing units.construction is scheduled to start next summer.

( lydia ) new this morning... san bruno police have arrested 21-year-old eliot rodriguez for grand theft. early wednesday morning police responded to reports of a suspicious person on the 700 block of pepper drve. police say rodriguez entered several unlocked cars in the area and rummaged through their contents. rodriguez removed tools from one car. police also determined rodriguez committed the same crimes in that area on october 5th. ( lydia ) happening now... police at u-c berkeley are looking for the person who sexually assaulted a student in university housing. the incident happened friday morning... and officers are still looking for the attacker. experts say roughly 23 percent of all female college students say they've experience rape or sexual assault. ( lydia ) a portion of fremont street in san francisco is now shut down. this comes after crews discovered cracks in two support beams at the salesforce transit center. four steel towers are now in place to shore up the area.

the area of fremont street between mission and howard is affected. it was supposed to open this friday but officials with the transit center say it won't open until wednesday, october 17th. ( lydia ) happening now... we are watching the markets after the dow dropped more than 800 points on wednesday. it was the third worst point drop in history. the three-point-one percent decline was the worst since february of this year. meanwhile, the nasdaq plunged four percent -- its worst day since the brexit referendum of june 2016. so far this morning... things are not looking much better dow futures are down more than 200 points. we will be following the markets when they open at 6:30 this ( lydia )coming up on the kron 4 morning news... a prestigious local high school in san francisco is changing its admission policy... we tell you why. (lydia) the san francisco board of education wants to attract students from a wider ethnic background to lowell high school. kron 4 's charles clifford explains the new changes to the school's admissions policy.

standards in middle school.in order to encourage more african american students to apply to lowell, the san francisco board of education voted to allow every student at willie brown middle school admission to lowell high if they meet the minimum academic standards.the school district said in a statement wednesday that"this change is intended to promote wbms and create more robust enrollment by ensuring there will be enough space for all wbms graduates who meet the academic criteria required for admission to lowell."critics says the admissions changes need further review and that by giving an advantage to willie brown middle school students, it could hurt the chances of students at other schools.sot because the additional students from willie brown middle school are going to crowd out students from school like aptos, james man, mlk and vis valley.supporters say the changes will give hope to kids who might not get into lowell otherwise.sotlowell middle school has one of the largest population of african american students in the city. if the board truly want to provide services to students you need to create a path from where they are and the means creating a path from willie brown middle schoolthe school district is also launching an outreach campaign to remind

( lydia ) a man is now facing a couple of charges following a fight in the parking lot of levi's stadium. another man was left in critical condition following the incident sunday. and as kron four's rob fladeboe reports, police are asking for your help as they move forward in this investigation.

a 49er's fan is in critical condition after he was allegedly assaulted by another fan. police say it happened after sunday's 49er's game at levi's 34-year-old david aguilara gonzalez has been arrested.. and is facing charges of felony assault and battery. police say gonzalez and the victim were in the parking lot near the corner of tasman and great american parkway. polcie say provoked when the victim kicked a bottle. the victim got up and tried to walk away punched him again. they are asking anyone phone video to come foreward.

news... people across florida and georgia begin the cleanup process after hurricane michael caused catastrophic damamge. at least two people have died from the storm that has now been downgraded to a tropical storm. natasha chen has the latest. hurricane michael made history as it slammed into florida's panhandle and swept across the southeastgov. rick scott / (r) florida: "hurricane michael is the worst storm that the florida panhandle has ever seen. and one of the worst power storms to ever make landfall in the united states. the catastrophic, fast-moving storm shredded homes to pieces, knocked out power and submerged entire towns under water.businesses devastated. like this children's store in panama city that was just on the verge of opening..brandon troupe, business destroyed in hurricane: "a years worth of time working and then just like that a couple hours, you come back and it's all gone." just before making landfall -- michael intensifiedwith sustained winds of 155 miles

per hour -- michael became the strongest storm to hit the continental united states since hurricane andrew -- 26 years ago.darius flanagan / rode out hurricane in panama city beach: "we were all praying as my stepfather and brother were watching out the window."michael continued its historical path -- becoming the first major hurricane to track into georgia since 1898 but the destructive storm won't be done anytime soon. michael continues to pack powerful winds and threaten people's lives.now -- those in michael's wake are left to pick up what the monster storm left behind.rep. neal dunn / - r- florida: "this could be an amount of damage that we ha not seen in living memory in this part of the country."in panama city beach, florida -- i'm natasha chen. ( lydia ) happening now... officials at u-c berkeley are looking for the people who left anti-semitic flyers on campus. the flyers depict newly-appointed supreme court justice brett kavanaugh - surrounded by jewish members of the u.s. senate - with the star of david on their foreheads. these flyers are the same flyers that were found on the campus of u-c davis earlier this week. the u-c berkeley chancellor

released a statement condemning the flyers. ( lydia ) the man accused of being the 'gypsy hill killer' will spend the rest of his life in prison. rodney halbower was found guilty of raping an murdering two teenage girls in san mateo county... 42 years ago. police believe he is responsible for other crimes in northern california and reno, nevada. yesterday a court in san mateo county sentenced him to two life sentences. ( lydia ) happening now... police are hoping surveillance video will help them track down the two men responsible for a string of cell phone store burglaries in the east bay. kron4's haaziq madyun has the story. (pkg)take a close look at this surveillance video. in it you see two men wearing hooded sweat tops enter the at&t store in the clayton valley shopping center in concord. this video was recorded back on tuesday october 2nd, 2018. the same two men are suspected of being involved in three cellphone store burglaries that day. after the burglary

at the at&t store, the hooded men walked right next door to the sprint store and allegedly took cell phones and tablets from there as well. unlike other snatch and grab cellphone store burglaries where the suspects run into the store and grab electronics and a fast pace, these two seemed to take their time, almost as if they were shopping or looking for specific items to steal. in fact a witness told me the two men were looking for the most expensive items in the store but at&t no longer places items out on displaysot concord police say the same two hooded men are likely responsible for a burglary minutes later at this verizon store in the oak grove plaza. this at&t store in pleasant hill is the location of the fourth burglary. pleasant hill police investigators say they are checking to see if these two men are connected to that incident in addition to three separate cell phone stores targeted by burglars in pleasant hill in the month of september...anyone with

building more large and mid- size housing projects. san francisco mayor london breed announced she's created a new position... the director of housing delivery. goals of the new director include... cutting the time it takes to process permits... implementing a plan to digitize applications and streamlining the entitlement process. ( lydia ) scooters are coming back to san francisco. the automatic scooters caused a lot of controversy when they suddenly appeared on the strees of san francisco a few months ago. there were so many complaints, the city decided to ban them. but now, a compromise has been reached. kron four's terisa estacio explains. terisa estaciopaul rose, sfmta i am here with paul rose, the spokesperson for the sfmta - and we are talking scooters. they are coming back to the city. october 15 is when the contract begins. paul, how is this going to work? we issued two contracts to to companies. they proved that they would honor the safety issues we put in to make sure it is safe. the contracts are scoot and skip. they are going to have issued two separate contracts at 625 scooters each. it is pilot program for a year. after 6 months they are going

( lydia ) three people in fontana - near san bernardino-- are accused of attempted murder... after a man was found naked and beaten in an abandoned home. as courtney friel explains the man had been kidnapped and tortured. on october 4th, after someone called police about homeless people squatting in an abandoned house at catawba and ceres avenues, fontana sheriffs deputies arrived to two men and a woman exiting the residence, and heard shrieking cries for help

coming from inside. cindy bachman/ san bernardino sheriff's dept.:"they went inside to investigate and they found a grown man, naked, his hands were bound with rope, and he was covered with white paint. they later learned that the victim had been kidnapped, from another location in fontana and had been taken into this vacant residence...beaten, severely beaten, and they continually submerged him in water until the until the point that he couldn't breathe."the victim was transported to arrowhead regional medical center. deputies then arrested fontana residents jose alvarez, roberto gonzalez, and adilene calvillo who were booked into west valley detention center on charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, torture, and false imprisonment. authorities are also looking for two other males who they believe were involved. juana mora/ neighbor:"it really surprised me, it really scares me."neighbors like juana mora are alarmed by the intensity of the attack, but want something more to be done about the vacant homes on the

( lydia ) a major development in the trial against monsanto. a judge is challenging a jury verdict awarding 289- million dollars to a bay area school groundskeeper... dewayne johnson.. johnson says the weed killer "round up" caused his cancer. kron four's gabe slate has the latest. dewayne johnson and his lawyers looked visibly upset as they walked out of the san francisco superior courtroom wednesday afternoon.they did not stop to talk to reporters but one of johnson's lawyers said this."the headline is the jury has spoken"the jury did all the talking. what he is referencing is in august a jury ruled in dewayne johnson's favor, a former bay area school grounds keeper who used round up weed killer often, for his job. dewayne johnson sued monsanto the maker of roundup weed killer claiming it caused his cancer. the jury agreed awarding

johnson $39 million in compensatory damages and $250 million in punitive damages. what happened wednesday afternoon is monsanto filed a motion asking for a new trial essentially saying the jury made a bad call and roundup is not to blame for johnson's cancer.the judge suzanne bolanos, filed a tentative ruling agreeing with monsanto saying she might order a new trial or lower the amount of money the jury awarded johsnon.. wednesday she heard oral arguments on this motion judge bolanos said plaintiff dewayne johnson failed to produce "clear and convincing evidence of malice or oppression" by monsanto.david levine is a professor of law with hastings college of the law in san francisco, he has been following this court case he says what happened today is not a surprisesound from - david levine is a professor of w with hastings college of the law in san francisco"this is normal practice to motion and appeal" what happens next.. the judge asked that lawyers from each side turn in written documents to her by friday answers to her questions and to lay out

showing oregon deputies racing to save a baby who had stopped breathing-- in the middle of a mall.. the whole thing was caught on camera. while at a shopping center with her parents, the baby girl began turning blue. moments after calling 9-1-1, deputies came sprinting through the mall. they performed c-p-r and were able to get the baby breathing. the two deputies later shared an emotional reunion with the family at the hospital .. members of california taskforce 4 are making their way across the country to help with relief efforts in the southeast. two people from the team in the south bay are headed to pensacola florida this morning. the team is on standby to send even more people to other areas affected by hurricane michael. they've put together kits including clothing, food, and other items for rescuers.

it opens. kron 4's sara stinson is live in san francisco with the details. kron 4's sara stinson is live with the latest details on the closure. sara?take reporter: fremont street was supposed to re-open tomorrow... but now it won't be open until next wednesday.that means drivers will continue to suffer in the heavy traffic that's been backing up downtown san francisco for weeks.the transbay joint power authority announced this delay in re- opening fremont street saying they've completed the shoring on the ground level of fremont street, but the installation of a four story shoring system won't be finished until next week.there is also a shoring system in place in the transit center on first street even

( darya ) happening now... officials at u-c berkeley are looking for the people who left anti-semitic flyers on campus. the flyers depict newly-appointed supreme court justice brett kavanaugh - surrounded by jewish members of the u.s. senate - with the star of david on their foreheads. these flyers are the same flyers that were found on the campus of u-c davis earlier this week.

( james ) the man accused of being the 'gypsy hill killer' will spend the rest of his life in prison. rodney halbower was found guilty of raping an murdering two teenage girls in san mateo county... 42 years ago. police believe he is responsible for other crimes in northern california and reno, nevada. yesterday a court in san mateo county sentenced him to two life sentences. ( james ) the warehouse fire in oakland that we brought you as breaking new yesterday on the kron 4 morning news could mean a major set-back for the completion of an affordable housing complex. resources for community development non-profit owns the paint storage warehouse. they are in the process of turning the site into 59 affordable housing units. construction is scheduled to begin next summer and will be done in late 20-21. the non-profit says they will not let the fire disrupt their plans to keep construction on track.

police are hoping surveillance video will help them track down the two men responsible for a string of cell phone store burglaries in the east bay. kron4's haaziq madyun has the story. (pkg)take a close look at this surveillance video. in it you see two men wearing hooded sweat tops enter the at&t store in the clayton valley shopping center in concord. this video was recorded back on tuesday october 2nd, 2018. the same two men are suspected of being involved in three cellphone store burglaries that day. after the burglary at the at&t store, the hooded men walked right next door to the sprint store and allegedly took cell phones and tablets from there as well. unlike other snatch and grab cellphone store burglaries where the suspects run into the store and grab electronics and a fast pace, these two seemed to take their time, almost as if they were shopping or looking for

johnson..( james ) johnson says the weed killer "round up" caused his cancer. kron four's gabe slate has the latest. dewayne johnson and his lawyers looked visibly upset as they walked out of the san francisco superior courtroom wednesday afternoon.they did not stop to talk to reporters but one of johnson's lawyers said this."the headline is the jury has spoken"the jury did all the talking. what he is referencing is in august a jury ruled in dewayne johnson's favor, a former bay area school grounds keeper who used round up weed killer often, for his job. dewayne johnson sued monsanto the maker of roundup weed killer claiming it caused his cancer. the jury agreed awarding johnson $39 million in compensatory damages and $250 million in punitive damages. what happened wednesday afternoon is monsanto filed a motion asking for a new trial essentially saying the jury made a bad call and roundup is not to blame for johnson's cancer.the judge suzanne

news ( darya ) new this morning... deputies detain 12 people in morgan hill and seize 21 guns at an illegal marijuana grow. the grow was discovered on miramonte avenue when deputies served a search warrant yesterday morning. these are pictures of the marijuana grow and the guns that were seized. police have not said if any of the 12 people detained were actually arrested. ( darya ) san francisco's transit agency has worked out a compromise for two companies to roll out a pilot program to bring scooters back to the city. the city is planning to issue two permits to the companies scoot and skip on october 15th. each permit

kron 4's sara stinson is live with the latest details on the closure. sara?take reporter: fremont street was supposed to re-open tomorrow... but now it won't be open until next wednesday.that means drivers will continue to suffer in the heavy traffic that's been backing up downtown san francisco for weeks.the transbay joint power authority announced this delay in re- opening fremont street saying they've completed the shoring on the ground level of fremont street, but the installation of a four story shoring system won't be finished until next week.there is also a shoring system in place in the transit center on first street even though no cracks were found there.officials want to make sure the shoring system
