tonight at 5... three construction workers are injured, one critically, in an accident at a job site this morning in fremont. hello i'm vicki liviakis. (grant) and i'm grant lodes. the workers were on a steel support tower when it collapsed. kron four's rob fladeboe explains what happened. the 9 a.m. accident occurred here near the intersection of durham road and auto mall parkway near interstate 680, where a mixed use housing complex is in the early stages of construction. the accident scene is behind that yellow caution tape. the men were working at the top of a 20- foot tower of re-bar when it collapsed says fremont fire batallion chief jeff youngsma. batt. chief jeff youngsma/fremo nt fire dept. "...our best guess is that from the weight of those individuals on that tower that it collapsed, about a thousand pounds of re-bar then landed on top of those three individuals..." co-workers came to their aid, pulling the men free of the heavy tower, which can be seen on it's side not far away. rushed to trauma centers, one victim was initially listed in critical condition while the

other two suffered moderate injuries. working to tie-in or ready the tower for concrete forms, the men were "clipped in" or tied to the structure for safety and could not jump free as they were falling.batt.chief jeff youngsma/fremont fire dept. "....what happens is they scale that re-bar like a scaffolding and then basically try and make it real secure and tight and then they build a box or form around it for concrete...."known as "mission hills square." the 53,000 square foot development will have about 100 condominiums along with both retail and commercial space. there was no immediate response from the contractor, queensland construction. cal-osha has taken the lead on investigating the accident and will determineexactly what caused the tower to fall. in fremont rob fladeboe kron4news

(vicki) (vicki) more than half of the massage parlors in san jose have been shut down. this after a major prostitution crackdown... and now more than 100 businesses are closed. (grant) officials are now saying more closures could come. kron 4's terisa estacio has the story. busted.. this is one of 107 massage parlors that were shuttered after the san jose police department raided the business. this was the long beach salon on stevens creek blvd... but not anymore... inside there is nothing left of the business. san jose police say this was just one of the 107 massage parlors shuttered since the beginning of the year as the department cracked down on illegal operations in city limits. most of the business closed had prostition going on... and possibly human trafficking ... lt. paul messier explains the raids, the take downs and how

senate... sat down - not for a debate, but a conversation. kron 4's dan kerman is live at san francisco city hall where early voting is already underway for the first time in almost 20 years u.s. senator dianne feinstein faced off in person with one of her opponents. fellow democrat and state senator kevin de leon agreed with feinstein on many issues including the need for immigration reform.. but he attempted to tie her to the recent seperation and locking up of immigrant children. sot state sen. kevin de leon/d-los angeles 18-28feinstein didn't take the bait... instead saying she thinks immigration reform is a real possibility if democrats do well in november.sot u.s. senator dianne feinstein/d-california 45-55on numerous issues feinstein refused to promise progress without a democratic majority in one of the houses. but de leon said that's why a change is needed.

(vicki) developing news tonight... an officer involved shooting at aquatic park in san francisco leaves one person in critical condition. kron 4's sara stinson has details on what happened. police had a crime scene up here in front of municipal pier at aquatic park for over 10 hours and that investigation continues at this time.the shooting was first reported at 9:31 tuesday night...when san francisco police arrived they found the shooting to be between a u-s park police officer and another person near aquatic park.we know one person was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries and another was detained and later arrested.police have not clarified if the person involved was also armed or identified who was taken to the hospital.no names have been released either.but just before the crime scene was cleared - two cars were towed including a green toyota sedan and the u-s park patrol car. police are still investigating this officer involved shooting. head to kron four dot com as we learn more.in

(vicki) san franciso and oakland top the list of having the worst roads in the nation. and because of these bumpy roads... it's causing you to dip into your pocket for repair costs.(grant) kron4's ryan o'donnell joins with more on how much this is costing you each year. we all try to avoid pot holes and bumpy roads... but if your commute takes you in and out of the san francisco- oakland area... a study found it's almost impossible to miss them all. every couple of years... a washington d-c based non-profit called trip, researches, evaluates and distributes economic and techcial data on surface transportation issues. this recent study focussed on the nation's major urban roads... and found a third of them to be rated in poor condition... with san francisco-oakland and san jose topping the list. one and two on the list... with the study finding 71 percent of the roads are in poor shape for san francisco-oakland... and 64 percent for san jose.

(grant) a big story tonight... and a tense situation for the first lady. melania trump's plane was forced to return to joint base andrews today because of smoke in the cabin. this is video as she exited the plane. she was on her way to a philadelphia hospital for an opioid event. those on board say the flight was in the air for about 10 minutes when smoke filled the cabin... and they smelled something burning. . reporters on the plane were given wet towels and told to put them over their faces if things got worse. the boeing 757 turned around and landed safely. the air force says the problem was with the plane's communication

(grant) startinin the east bay... a fast food restaurant is a total loss after a fire broke out early this morning. kron 4's lydia pantazes reports from antioch. firefighters in antioch responded to a two-alarm fire at a k-f-c restaurant. the fire broke out around 12:45 this morning on mahogany way. there are no reports of any injuries but officials say the building is considered a "total loss." the cause of the fire is still under investigation. investigation.

(grant) an update to the suspicious fire that burned an east bay apartment building that was being built at the time. construction has resumed on the five story complex. the site is on concord boulevard. the fire caused 55-million caused 55-million dollars in damage. investigators say this fire was intentionally set. no arrests have been made. (vicki) a car caught fire and crashed onto the campus of terra nova high school in pacifica and now police are looking for the driver. it happened last night just after 10pm. when officers arrived the black nissan was already fully engulfed in flames and parked near the theater building. a witness says the car was already on fire when it approached the school. anyone with information is asked to call pacifica police. palo alto over the weekend. according to family members 23-year old mario vidales mendez passed away earlier this week after suffering two gun shot wounds to the chest. 22-year old eduardo alvarado sandoval of stockton was also killed at the party. two other men were shot but are currently in stable condition. police in east palo alto are still looking for the suspect. (vicki) it is the end of an era on one of the most famous streets in the world....as the puppeteer who has played big bird on "sesame street" is retiring after nearly 50 years on the show. puppeteer caroll spinney has traveled the world playing big bird and oscar the grouch since sesame street premiered in 1969. at 84 spinney says the physical requirements of performing the characters has become difficult. his apprentice, matt vogel, will succeed him in the big bird role. vogel also plays kermit the frog. (ken) new tonight at 6. the general contractor that managed the construction of the 2.2 billion dollar transbay transit terminal has filed a lawsuit against the agency in charge of the project. the suit... filed in san francisco against the transbay joint powers authority -- alleges faulty design and mismanagement led to planning mistakes and overruns to the tune of 150 million dollars. the contractor alleges it sent 12-thousand requests for information and 16-hundred change order requests to agency officials during construction. the terminal had to be shut down last month after cracks were found in steel beams.

(catherine) also new at 6. san jose police have arrested this man... 20- year old esteban mosqueda...for allegedly sexually assaulting a 17-year old girl. the violent attack happened sunday behind a church on king road in san jose. mosqueda has been booked into the santa clara county jail on four felony counts. we'll have more on this story coming up tonight at 8. an alameda county sheriff's department sergeant accused of making illegal secret recordings of juvenile suspects was arraigned today in oakland. sergeant james russell did not enter a plea -- to four felony counts of recording confidential communications in an interview

room in march. the cases against the four juveniles had to be thrown out. today the judge allowed russell to remain free on his own recognizance, saying the 44- year old sergeant does not pose a flisk risk or threat to public safety. he is due back in court on october 31st for a potential plea entry. (catherine)in the east bay. three iron workers were injured in a construction accident this morning in fremont. as kron four's rob fladeboe reports - it happened when a steel support tower collapsed.. the 9 a.m. accident occurred here near the intersection of durham road and auto mall parkway near interstate 680, where a mixed use housing complex is in the early stages of construction. the accident scene is behind that yellow caution tape. the men were working at the top of a 20- foot tower of re-bar when it collapsed says fremont fire batallion chief jeff youngsma. batt. chief jeff youngsma/fremo nt fire dept. "...our best guess is that from the weight of those individuals on that tower that it collapsed, about a thousand pounds of re-bar then landed on top of those three individuals..." co-workers came to their aid, pulling the men free of the heavy tower, which can be seen on it's side not far away. rushed to trauma centers, one

(ken) bad roads aren't just annoying... they're expensive.(catherine) and unfortunately - two bay area cities are topping the list as among the worst. kron4's ryan o'donnell joins us with more on what it's costing local drivers.. we do our best to avoid pot holes and bumpy roads... but a study found it's almost impossible to miss them all if your commute takes you in and out of the san francisco- oakland area. every couple of years... a washington d-c based non-profit called trip, researches, evaluates and distributes economic and techcial data on surface transportation issues. this recent study focussed on the nation's major urban roads... and found a third of them to be rated in poor condition... with san francisco-oakland and san jose topping the list. one

twenty-two of the 25 top chains - including mcdonld's and burger king failed a review of their practices and policies on using antibiotics in their beef... this is a listing of the companies that got 'f' grades.... notice that bay area favorite 'in-n-out' - is another of the chains that got a failing grade. only two got a's -- including the 'shake shack' - which is coming to the bay area. wendy's got a d-minus because of a very minor step forward. as to why people should care....health experts have pointed to a growing resistance to antibiotics as one of the biggest public health problems of our time... overuse of antibiotics in livestock can cause resistant bacteria to spread - putting humans at risk of developing life-threatening infections. one of the study's authors stopped by kron 4's newsroom today to talk about the risks.. allison johnson - as

antibiotic resistance develops from this overuse in meat, antibiotics are less effective in treating our infections. so in the worst case scenario you skin your knee and you die because you contract an infection that can't be treated. burger chains should start to lead the beef industry by announcing publ policies to phase out the overuse of antibiotics in beef production. one of the chains responding tonight -- mcdonalds. it points out in a statement that it pledged in 2016 to no longer serve chicken treated with antibiotics....adding "mcdonald's is currently finalizing a global antibiotics policy for beef, to be announced before the end of 2018." an executive with 'in-n-out' also responded... telling kron that the company is committed to the concept of raising beef without the use of antibiotics.... but it acknowledges that there's no timeline yet for when that might happen.
